Year and a half ago bought a WRX premium for just under $32K. The jittery ride and peaky motor of the old WRX were gone, heated seats, linear throttle response sold me. But I'm 73, no longer a boy racer, just an old guy who appreciates decent handling, enough power, and a manual.
Yeah I actually LIKE the WRX. I even like how it looks. And the icing on the cake is that you can actually buy a WRX for below sticker. I recently saw one that was running on slightly lower ride height (about .5 - 1.0" all around) and a custom quad exhaust and it looked fantastic. Don't get me wrong, I love the GR Corolla and if up to me, I'd take a GR Corolla Circuit just out of sheer charm, but the WRX still has a place here!
I bought my 2022 WRX premium last July. Just crossed 22k miles on Tuesday. I can’t stop driving it. Just waiting another 13k miles before the real fun begins
I love the format and presentation of these reviews. It's amazing how the aesthetic and composition has remained very familiar after all these years. In a time when a lot of visual media has evolved to rely on faster cuts, loud music, jarring effects to maintain attention, seeing these videos in contrast invokes a feeling of nostalgia and better times. Hope you guys keep doing what you're doing for years to come!
Thank you for saying this and for connecting with what we do. We were one of the very first on RUclips, and we're not going anywhere. Glad to have you watching!
I drove the GR Corolla for a day. It was very impressive, it gripped, took turns really quick. Its the best AWD car I have ever driven. However, it also made me discover that I'm more of a RWD purist and enjoy the communication and scalpel dynamics of the MX5 and 86 more.
@@tyhyhhjust because you heard online that the diff overheats after heavy track use doesn’t mean it’s “kinda ass”. Per this video, it seems to drive great
I'm working with a dealer to place an order on the ND3 Club MX5 with the BBS package. Looking forward to the new fir 2024 improved steering rack and two-way limited slip differential.
@@sanzserif I know im in the minority saying this but I have more fun in my VB than the 2nd gen BRZ. Idk if the 86 drives much differently but the numb cluch engagement and throttle response wasnt the best when i test drove it
Hi, from Japan!! And thank you for picking two Japanese cars. I think both cars are good and fun. However, Toyota makes more hustle and fun cars recently. On the contrary, Subaru makes more gentle and safety cars recently. I feel same ways on GR86 and BRZ. GR86 is more exciting. BRZ is more gentle.
This site has an extensive history with the FT86 twins in both generations and they are fans of those cars. This review is aimed at cars with a different market segment.
@@ElleesD-95 The oil pressure issue mainly pertains to cars taken to a race track, especially with high grip racing-type tires. There are track users engaged in looking for an aftermarket remedy for the oil pressure issue. www.youtube.com/@900BRZ Regarding the issue with the sealant Subaru uses being overapplied and collecting in the pan, there is still not a clear answer to whether that is a real problem. Doesn't seem good to me, but it doesn't seem to be associated with any engine failures so far.
I brought into my rally red 2015 EVO X GSR right out of college thanks to Todd’s advice back in 2016. I still have that car and would never get rid of it. It is quite amazing after I put on some sticky 245 tires on my EVO X it still out handles the 265 FL5 Type R on the backroad. This review further makes me want to test drive a GR Corolla. It is known (according to Best Motoring in Japan) there some real Mitsubishi engineers that left Mitsubishi after the EVO X project to develop the GR Corolla.❤
GR Corolla definitely feels like a spiritual successor to the Evo X. I might move over from mine when the prices of the GR drop, I just can’t justify paying the ~20k difference in my market
Own a 22 WRX. For a dad family of four, man that thing is the funnest car I’ve owned. And you can drive it the same all year long (live in northern New York)
I have a GR premium package. And I prefer it over the circuit. I didn’t want the wing because I was going to get an aftermarket WRC wing, which is now on my GR. People know it’s something special and that is just such a cool feeling. I cannot emphasize how many looks and turning heads I get just driving this thing. Some People that don’t know it’s a performance car think I modded an XSE but they say it’s modified really well. Its just such a cool little car and it just scoots
@myredpyramidthing it is a nice vehicle. It's just that in Canada the base is $50k, while I paid $39k for my wrx limited. And even though the wrx interior is not luxury by any means, it far exceeds that of the base grc for a significantly cheaper price tag. Toyota really needs to up the ante in that department.
I’ve always owned $80k-$100k M3&M4’s, a hellcat and so on. I sold my most recent challenger hellcat and M4 and daily a 2016 Ram 2500. Been itching for a new car so looked at M3 with awd. Saw a GRC Circuit Ed. In a Best Buy parking lot and started my research, 2 days and 20 dealerships later I drove my New 2024 GRC Circuit Ed. Off the lot, it is the best car I’ve ever driven, I feel so connected to the car and the road. I couldn’t be happier and will never ever sell it. I knew it was gonna be good but really had no idea it just how good it is! Also, it’s my first Toyota and after only 5 days, I’m a loyalist! I had better service and treatment at the Toyota dealer than I ever have at a BMW and my wife’s Range Rover dealership! Thank you Toyota for making the perfect car!
I had a Lexus RCF for almost 9 years, highly modded with high end coilovers and bolt ons, it wasn’t a slouch by any means. Then I saw the Toyota GR up close and personal (the owner gave me a full tour). I couldn’t get it off my mind, literally 4 days later I was trading my Lexus for the GR Corolla circuit edition. Driving it has me all smiles, and the car from every single angle is gorgeous. I often find myself going to the garage just to admire it. The car is such a thrill to drive so nimble and light footed with an eagerness to be driven. The GR Corolla is the first car I have owned right out the box that has me quite satisfied. With my Lexus and previous Mercedes AMG there was always something I felt they lacked from factory and hence all the mods l would do to the cars. With the GR it’s so perfect, I’m just so satisfied with it stock. Can’t wait for the break in period to be over so I can extract the most out of that engine. I totally agree with everything you said about your experience, truly a phenomenal car! All those who say it’s just a Corolla are totally clueless, even the interior is very agreeable to me. I don’t in anyway feel like I have downgraded
It's fine to compare these two, but don't pretend they're in the same price class. In Canada, the WRX Sport (premium) has an MSRP of about 40k. The base Corolla is nearly 50k
❤ such a good summary and comparison of both vehicles, if the car seats fit in the back of the GR Corolla I totally would’ve gone that route. Although the $9000 price difference would’ve given me pause. Loving the WRX for now!
@@steve8803they've out priced fun cars with safety and tech bs, plus inflation not keeping up with wages. Now we get old boomer cars that will rub your shoulders and turn for you. What a fun world we live in
As an evo 9 owner, we just bought a GR Corolla for my pregnant wife. She LOVES it. Seats are comfortable. We traded in our Bronco 4Dr hardtop manual. We also have two dogs and some ppl will say we are crazy to downsize but we don’t care lol we knew the GRC is something special, hell I feel like it’s a newer evo 9! We are happy with ours. It’s so fun!
I completely agree. Having owned an Evo 8 and a 2005 STi, the GRC is more like the Evo than the STi. Oddly most people compare the GRC to the STi 🤷🏻♂️
Agreed! I traded in my Evo 8 for a 9 MR and hated the MR's 6 speed. The GR's shifter is closer to the 8 5 speed which I loved. The GR has sharp steering and a much better interior) It is the softer Evo that I need now that I'm an old fart.
I own a 2019 STI. I was holding out for the new one. I ended up buying a Morizo and still daily the STI. The lack of STI made Subaru loose all appeal to me.
It's hard to get the specialness difference between the two without driving them close together. I was stunned when I did and the GR was the clear winner (coming from a Fiesta ST, B-13 Sentra SE-R, and a Datsun 510). Rowdy shitboxes are my happy place.
Another thing people have to take into account about the GR Corolla is they only made so many for the 23’ and 24’ year. It was around 6,500 units so finding one in the color you want is the first challenge, and then in the trim you want. And, finally you can try to get it at, or below MSRP with no markup.
Nailed the summary in my opinion. I absolutely love both vehicles, and own the 22 WRX Limited 6spd. I got mine new for $34k and have loved every one of the 20k miles I've put on it so far. Got a chance to drive the GR Corolla and don't have any trouble admitting it is sharper and a better performer. But... I have a 30 mile commute to work each way and have three boys. The GR Corolla is the car I want, but it would be such a compromise for what I need it to do. Love them both. Glad they're both available.
I wish Subi made a true rally WRX due to the existing ride height. Just put some cool chunky/sport tires/wheels to nod to its current ride height and RALLY nature. Jesus. Everyone loves adventure motos and outdorsey fun. This car needs that. Toss on some great name brand shocks like what GM and Toyota are doing. LIKE THAT!
Like any enthusiast car. People will tune them and throw bolt ons them. I think that’s a given personally. The WRX FA24 comes alive with an intake and tune.
I currently own both, I bought the GR to replace the WRX but I have found the WRX is the better daily so surprised by that. I ice climb and ski and thought the hatch back would work significantly better in carrying the gear but found the opposite. The Subarus fold down seats create a 5 foot "bed" to carry a set of 190cm skis. The GR cannot even carry the skis with them going through the dash. Plus I paid 5k marked adjust on my premium trim like an idiot. haha
One thing reviewers won't mention is the VB WRX comes from the factory *very* under tuned. A simple OTS with zero mods will make ~310+ HP to all 4 wheels. My 2023 VB WRX with no mechanical mods and a pro tune will absolutely dust even a tuned GR Corolla. I'm hitting 0-60 in like 4.6 seconds...
this is true but you have to understand most reviewers are reviewing a product that is how it came from the factory, how the OEM sold the car, not its tuning potential. So depending on the type of buyer like someone who is an enthusiast, of course you're gonna research which one is better for mods. But when OEMs gives a reviewer a press car, they arent interested in letting someone talking about mods.
@@sshhddoo9892 I get that. Which is why I dropped the comment. People need to understand that the Toyota is high strung out the gate while the subie can safely make 400 HP on pump gas
Fair review of both vehicles, direct injection only on the wrx sent me looking in a different direction. I’m a guy that has been driving wrx since 2006 when I purchased a 2005 Saab 92x aero. Still have a really nice 2002 wrx sedan that I only drive on nice weather days and no salted roads. Purchased an Is300 awd instead of a new wrx last month.
Great comparison as always guys. I cross-shopped these two as well as the Integra & GTI, and ended up with a WRX for the new daily. Currently own 6 Toyotas, 2 MR2s, Celica, 1st gen Tacoma, FJ Cruiser, and an old 2WD 90 pickup. I wanted the GRC, but went WRX for the interior and trunk space as well as the price. Much nicer place to be, back seat easily fits the rear facing car seat, and huge trunk. A huge rally fan, so it's about time I finally got a proper Subaru with a 6-speed and a turbo to daily.
I honestly still can't get over the looks and that giant touch screen in the new WRX. That is why I ended up trading my 2019 BRZ for my current 2023 Honda Civic Si. Modified the new WRX looks great, however in stock form it looks like a sports-sedan had a baby with a off-roady crossover. I do think the WRX is definitely the best value for money right now, which is why they are selling really well. That GR Corolla is amazing in every metric. What a machine!
I drove both and felt claustrophobia in the GR. Also, no adults can ever ride in the back. Can't take skis on your trip either. In Montana, this was a no brainer. The WRX is a much better all around car, and can easily accept mods to beat the GR in an autocross or rallycross event.
All these reviewers forget the weight/performance advantage and the stand alone cost that the Forged Carbon Roof on the Circuit represents. Same people used to gush over the E46 M3 CSL, yet somehow this gets forgotten here. Never mind the interior is heaps nicer in the Circuit, Functional hood vents keep temps under better control in the bay area, and the wing just adds to the whole package, especially with the 24 upgrades.
Its weird in Canada the WRX in the trim you tested is 40K CAD and the bottom GR Corolla trim is 49K. So in Canada almost a 10K difference. Guess I'll wait to pick up the GR used
So I bought the WRX back in October 2022 after putting in a deposit for a GR86. Toyota kept delaying delivery so I decided with winter approaching to go with the WRX instead. My girlfriend was also pleased I went from a "4" seater coupe to a 5 seater sedan. The GTC was basically unobtanium here in my part of Canada. I have yet to actually see one in person. The WRX is exactly what you guys said, a more compliant, family friendly sports car. It's awesome, does exactly what I need it to do. I can fit things in it without issue, haul people, while also taking it on the backroads, dirt roads and have a blast in the winter. Yeah it's a little ugly, but whatever, it's quirky IMO.
I'm really nostalgic for cars that have spartan, low-rent interiors. Cheap, low quality interiors give me a better feeling like I can USE the car. There's a charm to vehicles that do the dynamics part inherently well, but leave the interior space to the driver to be as tidy or as messy, as cared for or lived in, as they choose to make it. If I were well off and young in 2004, I would have bought an Impreza STi. If I were young today, I'd have that Corolla. They exist in the same space for me, personally.
Another great vid guys! The wheel cladding on the WRX is gaudy imo, It makes the wheel "openings look ginormous. Todd I know you've had it for awhile but I'm loving the goatee buddy.
that's not what they're talking about, they're talking about the poor handling, even with coilovers on my wife's new VB it handles poorly and that's because it's running Forester and Crosstrek open front diff and open rear diff drivetrain. Subaru really needs to bring back optional STI package that it did in previous models that way we could get front LSD, center DCCD diff, and rear LSD and compete against GR Corolla and Civic Type R.
Its pretty sad that after all this time, subaru cant get as much power out the WRX as Toyota can get out of the tiny 3 cylinder. And lets not pretend it will be more reliable - Subaru always finds a way to have engine gremlins
They can lol. It’s a way bigger engine than Toyota. Emissions regulations apply to a manufacturer’s entire fleet. Subaru has to under tune the engine to meet emissions for their fleet of vehicles, as they don’t really have any cars that are super good at fuel economy like Toyota.
I still want Toyota to put the 3 cylinder into the GR86 for the street (it's already in the racing cars). As a bonus, I have read that it is a bit lighter than the Subaru flat-4.
We can’t talk about these cars without talking about their real world prices right now. The GR Corolla is still marked up at 90% of dealerships. And good luck finding a circuit or Moritsu edition for anything under 50k. The fact you can still get a wrx at msrp is what wins it for me in the end.
Almost traded my 22 WRX Limited for a GR Corolla last month and backed out at the last minute. I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I do prefer hatchbacks and I know the GR is the better enthusiast driver but I guess I’m attached at this point and love the way the WRX looks in person.
I have a GR Yaris. Corolla not available in UK. For an everyday, I’d have a Golf R over the WRX, which seems to be neither comfort/luxurious nor sporty as per rally winner Gen Subarus.
The core or premium might be cheaper, but the circuit just has the looks. The vehicle handles so well, though. It is crazy how planted it feels. I only put a little over 500 miles on my CE right now, and it is a fantastic drive feeling.
I agree that the GR can happily be your daily driver if you are not bothered about the drab cabin. I say this as somebody for whom a V5 STi Type RA was my daily driver for 13 years. The only reason it isnt now is age, and the fact that now you folk in the US can import them they are rocketing in value. Thanks for that 😉 That said, im not keen on the exterior looks (reminds me of a Mazda 3) and i think that does matter. And anyway, cant get either of these in the UK so kind of a moot point.
My problem with the new vehicles and the wrx is major proof is those massive screens that just ruin the interior appeal, the GRC screen is more managable but I do wish it was flush instead of the bump, as for driving the wrx just doesn't feel right to drive anymore, like it feels off compared to previous generations, whereas the GRC just feels like the older wrx used to be
Why aren’t there more hatchbacks offered? Are they afraid they’ll leach away sales from suvs? Bring back the hatchback/wagon Subaru, focus, A4, Jetta etc…Not everyone wants a huge suv or cuv. What about those who want a car that fits in their garage, has decent mpg , and doesn’t cost an arm/leg in insurance. Offer them in turbo or hybrid variants with AUTO or “E-CVT. Bring back the affordable fun car!
Bc cuvs are more profitable in the US. they cost about the same to make, but are differientiated enough to sell for several thousand more, which is pure profit. Like the corolla cross
Hatchbacks get *slightly* worse mpg than sedans, so I've always imagined that's the reason some manufacturers avoid making them. For example, the current Mazda3 sedans get better MPG than the hatchbacks, despite both looking pretty sleek.
@@AndelaPandela for sporty vehicles, like the wrx, compared to sedans, hatchbacks also tend to get a bit worse lap times than the same car as a coupe or sedan. C&d blamed the hatchback setup for the 2008 sti's dismal result on the lightning lap. When they tested the 2019 jetta gli, they noted it had also beat the last (2015) golf r they had tested, despite the golf r being the much more powerful, performance car of the brand.
I dunno I have both the only thing really analog about the sti is the gauges. To me they both feel very similar leaning to my sti with the better stick feel but reliability I can sleep better at night with the gr. The fact that the sti or wrx could explode even at stock was a no go..
Saw a circuit edition Corolla today and I'd probably trade my WRX for one. A hatchback s just so much more practical, and the GR has a way better designed interior instead of the stupid massive screen that is in the new Subarus. I absolutely HATE the body cladding on the WRX and would have to factor in replacements from Aeroflow dynamics into my purchase price.
@ToyotaUSA. @Everydaydriver @Subaru Nice review, thanks. I wish Toyota had the same post-sales and customer service as Subaru. My wrx series white was with me for 133k and was entirely serviced by Subaru dealers. Now, I own a GRC 23. In less than 25k miles my 4 tires became uneven. The brakes don’t respond, at first pedal action, during pouring. And my front rotors are warped, with an estimated replacement cost of $2.7K dollars. Too many issues for a new car. BTW, is this car made in China?😂
I have a 2015 Toyota Agya. It's also 3 cylinder and the exhaust also gets way too hot. My gas tank gets too hot sometimes. The solution is adding that silver heat insulation around the exhaust. Very cheap and easy fix!
I drove the WRX, GLI, Elantra N & I would’ve loved to test drive a GR but the were unobtainable at the time but ended up buying a Golf r. I still think about that Elantra N though. It had a real personality unlike all those others.
well the reason Elantra N did better than WRX is because it comes standard with LSD. New WRX has no option for LSD, it only runs open front diff and open rear diff drivetrain from Forester and Crosstrek.
WHITE Hot take on the current gen WRX: The "less fun out of the box" and "no STI" approach makes a ton of sense. Two reasons: 1) People (not everyone!) have always demanded a more refined and comfortable everyday WRX. This is easily the most comfortable and daily-able WRX ever. But y'all are correct, it comes at the expense of some fun! However... 2) Subaru knows that a huge percentage of buyers are going to tune their WRX to high heaven. Instead of building the most fun "off the lot" car, why not invest that R&D into creating the most solid platform for tuning ever? At 13psi peak boost, that 2.4 is SUPER unstressed (vs the prior gen's 23psi peak boost). So far these are proving extremely reliable to tune, and ridiculously fast. Not to be THAT guy, but you can unlock STI performance with the VB for as little as $1000-3000. Meanwhile, the GR is almost untunable and is surprisingly prone to issues (the recent Savagegeese video goes into more detail about this!) I really respect and admire the Corolla GR! It's the more fun "off the lot" car, no question. But I think Subaru nailed the brief in terms of delivering a better daily car for one audience, and a more solid tuning platform with a WAY higher tuning potential for another. Great review as always, guys!
Just did a few hours of hard driving in the Gr premium and a Subi TR. So much so we had to refuel both. Definitely the Gr noticeably has more power and has a much more fun rev happy engine with a great shifter. However it’s loud, the interior is cheap, the seats are just only okay plus they place you in a more truck or SUV like orientation which feels like you are sitting on top of the car instead of inside and the rough ride quality as a daily comes into question. Plus that rev happy engine seams to always need to have the RPMs up high even though it has more torque than the WRX. Fuel economy is not great. The WRX TR has more room everywhere, better ride quality, is just plain easy to drive and has a better ability to handle bad bumpy road surfaces more comfortable seats, more options, nicer cabin and it’s materials. Both have their strong points and weak points. Bottom line is the GR is a better track car and the TR is better at everything else. If you want cheaper insurance, better ride quality and comfort, more room, utility, MPG, etc. the choice is obvious.
Up here in Canada the GR Corolla is significantly more expensive than the WRX. A top trim WRX is still $2k cheaper than a base GR. plus every single Corolla I've seen for sale is also marked up while the WRX is easily found at msrp.
Owned a 2007 WRX TR for many years - did a lot of stuff to it, and it was always fun to drive and hoon around in. The bigger turbo (that I installed) and the hit from the boost threshold was so fun! Very theatrical. Test drove a '23 WRX and it's completely lost all its charm and character. It feels far more like an old Volvo; no drama, no fun, not really good at much. Just a comfortable daily driver. Ended up test driving a '23 GR86 and buying it on the spot.
I traded in my 2014 WRX (the last of the hatchbacks) for a 2023 WRX. I was interested in looking at the GR Corolla but, at the time, I couldn't even find one to test drive. And the Toyota dealers were asking $10k over MSRP. I got my 2023 WRX for a bit under MSRP. Compared to my 2014 WRX, the 2023 WRX has a better suspension, better power delivery, a better shifter (I got the short-throw), and a more comfortable interior. A year on, I have no regrets buying my 2023 WRX.
Australia: GR Corolla is $69k AUD / WRX RS Manual $58k AUD or the WRX Manual base model for $52k AUD. The WRX seems like a lot better purchase. Also considering that the GR's 1.6 turbo sounds like it's running super high boost I think the WRX will have it in longevity as well.
Wow, what an awesome pair of cars, and you reviewed them so well! Your down-to-earth style of presenting them really shows that you know (and care about) your audience. Thank you!
Back in the day when the Golf GTI MK5 came out that car would always win comparisons, no matter if the competition was faster and had better handling. It was the great all-rounder. In many comparisons that I remember, it would win based on having a better interior. How times have changed! Now the WRX is the all-rounder with the better interior and better ride, yet it loses this comparison.😀
The deluxurized that the Corolla got is exactly what I want. In a car like this I'm not buying it for infotainment or nice ricaro seats or lumbar support. Or heated seats. Id be buying it for the pure heart of a sports car. I think car review channels are losing sight of this in a sports car review. Id be okay with all the smart sensors and all that and Android Auto being taken out to get this amazing car for cheaper heat ac and a Bluetooth radio is all I want in a sports car
I loved my '05 STI, but I can't help but feel like Subaru has lost its way. The TR and GT are around STI prices but without any of the things people want from an STI. It's bigger, heavier, it still under-steers, and it's losing performance comparisons with the front wheel drive and even uglier Elantra N. What happened to the WRX being the giant killer?
I love my GR Corolla and mostly drive with the rear seats folded flat; in the last few days, I've carried a six foot Willow tree, a five-foot tall and quite large roll of steel fencing and stakes. At 6'6", I'm snug; the seat could go lower (and have a longer seat), the pedals should engage closer to the fire wall, and the steering wheel should telescope further... ...or, my tall ass is too big for this thing lol! Amazing car though, undeniably!
My 2023 Core with the Winter, Performance, and "Entertainment" option packages would like a word. The heated seats and steering wheel all work very well on cold days.
Mitsubishi is GARBAGE and i see them going out of buisness because nobody buys that junk, there cars are horrible im surprised they don't have a 10 year 100 thousand mile warranty like the korean garbage ( kia & hyundai ) TOYOTA is king of the japanese cars period!!!!!!!
Hear you. The ej205 in my old blobeye bit the dust right around 240k. It lived a good life & I do miss it. Couldn’t justify the pricing of used rexes. Those WBM events were awesome. Ultimately jumped into a fist and I’ve been pretty happy. Maybe one day subie will make another turbo awd hatch.
@@mrb401 I'm impressed. Mine threw a rod bearing at 54k. Suby was kind enough to fix it for $3k. Managed to update to the RA motor for that so hopefully it'll last a while.
People laughed at Toyota, saying they needed help from Subaru to engineer the 86/BRZ and BMW for Supra. And Yamaha to design engine heads etc. When in actual fact - Toyota could do everything on its own even from 40 years ago.
I realize this is shallow, but I just can't get past the Subaru's black plastic cladding around the wheels. Dear Subaru: this is a street car. The majority of buyers aren't going to take this anywhere where they need that stuff. Does that mean I pick the GR? Well, I went to their website and built a "Core" GR Corolla, added a few "luxury" options (like carpeted floor mats) and it's near to 40 grand as it makes no difference. Really, Toyota? I'll keep hanging onto my little BMW 228i XDrive.
What a well thought out review. WRX hits the spot for me. I have a motorcycle to that is more fun than any car (and way less expensive too) I've owned, so the additional fun-factor of the GRC doesn't tip the scales in its favor for me. The WRX as a 4 season vehicle and the added trunk space and fold down seats is better for camping and great for transporting bicycles and canoes, and the stick shift and power make it more than enough. It will look and function better with a roof rack than the GRC. Hopefully the added plastic (which I think looks OK) means less corrosion and a longer lasting body. The big vertically oriented screen fits nicely into the design and I surprise myself a bit saying that since I hate screens in cars.
I was wondering about this too! There are just too many sings that indicate Subaru was planning to make an Sti version also. 1. The engine is so easily can be turned. 2. The chassis is super stiff, it can handle much more 3. The “ coin holder” can be perfectly flip with an old SI drive system module. 4. In sport plus setup of the WRX GT the suspension and steering feel like an Sti.
When I drove the GR Corolla I really missed having a right armrest. Also, as a new manual driver I found it particularly touchy when rolling from a dead stop. I’m sure it’s something I’d get used to, but compared to the new Honda Civic Si the GR Corolla was unforgiving.
22 WRX owner here … Subaru of America seems really confused with the cars trim levels. You nailed it, the Premium with the Sunroof/Hartman Kardon package is the way to go!
I'll tell you why the body cladding and why the - visually, at least - ride height appears to be higher. This generation of WRX is a vibe check by Subaru to see if the WRX customer will tolerate this car being turned into a CUV.
They are very different cars with a vast practicality/size difference, and with that comes significant weight. As a father of two who has “made it work” with an FRS, it’s time to upgrade to a more practical/usable/comfortable daily. Besides, you can get massive power gains with a couple bolt ons and an OTS tune on the WRX; the BRZ is going to give up far fewer ponies for far more money. Love both cars though, and I’m just glad that we are spoiled enough to have both options.
I have the same car. Get it pro tuned by dman. You won't regret

Love my GR Corolla Circuit Edition. It's the perfect companion to my Miata 🤙
Love my 24 Circuit also. It’s the perfect companion to my Cayman 👍
I drove the GR Corolla for a day. It was very impressive, it gripped, took turns really quick. Its the best AWD car I have ever driven. However, it also made me discover that I'm more of a RWD purist and enjoy the communication and scalpel dynamics of the MX5 and 86 more.
gr corolla awd system is kinda ass tbh must have not driven any good awd cars
@@tyhyhhjust because you heard online that the diff overheats after heavy track use doesn’t mean it’s “kinda ass”. Per this video, it seems to drive great
Yup I went from a VA STI to a GR86 and in terms of pure driver engagement RWD wins every single time.
@mkei8972 the ONLY "hustle and fun" car Toyota actually makes is the gr corolla in my market. The brz/gr86 are subaru designs. And the supra is a bmw.
@@steve8803 That’s true!! Steve!!
Both new 86 and brz seems to have design flaws? Eg oil pressure etc.
@@ElleesD-95
The oil pressure issue mainly pertains to cars taken to a race track, especially with high grip racing-type tires. There are track users engaged in looking for an aftermarket remedy for the oil pressure issue. www.youtube.com/@900BRZ
Regarding the issue with the sealant Subaru uses being overapplied and collecting in the pan, there is still not a clear answer to whether that is a real problem. Doesn't seem good to me, but it doesn't seem to be associated with any engine failures so far.
I own this exact WRX in white. It does deliver for me. No oil use, no rattles, no warranty issues, 28 mpg last 3000 miles. Great review, guys.
How does it look in person? Camera doesn't do it too well
Till your valves need cleaning.
Is 28 MPG considered good for a new sedan in the US? It's the kind of fuel mileage you'd expect from an old estate or a large SUV in Europe
@@lptomtomNo that’s not considered good but that’s very good for a vehicle with AWD and a 270 hp engine
I own it too but mine was 33k haha not the 38k I guess they are now? Love it though
Great video. Special shout out to the outtakes, especially Paul’s shifting, complete with racing inspired sound effects.
271hp, 6 speed, awd, room for 4, all that for $30K…..so I bought one 6 months ago…..Love it! Love it! Love it!
What did you buy?

@@KTK_808 Yeah, 271hp is more than I'd ever need anyways. That sounds like a great deal. The whole markup beyond mrsp of Corolla turns me off.
@@nevinkuser9892 the linear powerband makes it feel great driveability wise because you don't have that low end loss like the VA and prior wrx's had.

Love my GRC 😊 its been 1 year and been fun to own, and I've got 24 mpg most of the time 😊
What mileage do you get if you baby it?
@sarcasticundertones3513 Used Eco mode on the hwy and saw 32mpg.
It's fine to compare these two, but don't pretend they're in the same price class. In Canada, the WRX Sport (premium) has an MSRP of about 40k. The base Corolla is nearly 50k
I too daily drive a fbo race red st2 😅
Maybe that speaks to how low the demand for the WRX is? I’ve seen more GR Corolla than I’ve seen new WRX recently
@kenchen704 do you not live where it snows cause I see like 5 new wrxs aday
Rip currency conversion
Back in 22. My base vb was abour 32-33k almost cheaper~onpar with the si. Almost 10-12k cheaper than the corolla. That was my deciding factor
I miss my EVO X... I bought it when I lived in Buffalo NY. I sold it when I moved to Texas and got a Truck. My Truck is Nice, but I miss my EVO X.
❤ such a good summary and comparison of both vehicles, if the car seats fit in the back of the GR Corolla I totally would’ve gone that route. Although the $9000 price difference would’ve given me pause. Loving the WRX for now!
It’s been 10 years and we’re still upset we don’t get a wrx hatch 😂

As an evo 9 owner, we just bought a GR Corolla for my pregnant wife. She LOVES it. Seats are comfortable. We traded in our Bronco 4Dr hardtop manual. We also have two dogs and some ppl will say we are crazy to downsize but we don’t care lol we knew the GRC is something special, hell I feel like it’s a newer evo 9! We are happy with ours. It’s so fun!
Evo looks way better than the Subaru. But the new Subaru looks way better than the Toyota lol
I completely agree. Having owned an Evo 8 and a 2005 STi, the GRC is more like the Evo than the STi. Oddly most people compare the GRC to the STi 🤷🏻♂️
I put 8 people in my 1000cc 3cyl Toyota hatchback and it went up a mountain! Don't worry about anything. These are the greatest cars on the planet.
@iiReCoii have to disagree the grc is a far better looking car than the new wrx
I have a 19 sti and was thinking something similar. How much did you get your morizo for?
It's hard to get the specialness difference between the two without driving them close together. I was stunned when I did and the GR was the clear winner (coming from a Fiesta ST, B-13 Sentra SE-R, and a Datsun 510). Rowdy shitboxes are my happy place.
Locally, the WRX premium is over $32,735 and the GR Corolla $46,850.00 before taxes and fees. I wish they were priced more closely together.
I got mine below that.
What model corolla? The gr corolla Lsd should be around 38?
The STI would be priced basically the same as the GR Corolla.
Yeah these prices are bizarre. I'm in Canada and the WRX is priced WAY lower than that GR, even the top trim.
Some guys in Australia ran the engine in the GR Yaris past 30lbs of boost. The engine is not stressed. Toyota engineering FTW
LIKE THAT!
I saw a wrx in this dark gray kinda color and it made the plastic cladding make so much more sense
I’m getting a World Rally Blue, but the Magnetite grey was a very close second choice. The boy racer in me won out.
That's why I bought a Magnetite Gray 2022 WRX lol
Mine is black but getting a color change at the end of this month. The gray does look great also, but my Camaro is gray.
Mines ignition red, and I actually really like how the black cladding looks on it
Both are great cars. I have the new wrx. One thing I love is that it is very easy and cheap to tune and get another 50 hp with a Cobb access port.
so for a grand you can tune it to have the same performance of the corolla and lose the warranty... not worth it for 50 hp.
@@NMTDevastator you don’t lose the entire warranty. Yes there is some risk. Worth it for me
Like any enthusiast car. People will tune them and throw bolt ons them. I think that’s a given personally. The WRX FA24 comes alive with an intake and tune.
@@NMTDevastator You don't lose your warranty using an accessport.
Plus I paid 5k marked adjust on my premium trim like an idiot. haha
Interesting to hear this. Makes sense based on when we had them together. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!

Definitely in the plans for mine(the one they reviewed)!
@@sshhddoo9892 I get that. Which is why I dropped the comment. People need to understand that the Toyota is high strung out the gate while the subie can safely make 400 HP on pump gas

i wait to see the inevitable reddit post asking about what to do once the bottom end destroys itself...like every other WRX chasing evos of old.
Ive actually been in the market for this wrx and im very happy to see this video
Never mind the interior is heaps nicer in the Circuit,
Functional hood vents keep temps under better control in the bay area, and the wing just adds to the whole package, especially with the 24 upgrades.
Your description of both vehicles is on point. Great video my guys
The landscape where you are at is incredible for thoses car, I like the WRX so much ! Unfortunately we donnot have thoses one in EU
Used to own a 2015 STI, now own a GR Corolla Circuit Edition. The Corolla is so much better.
Another great vid guys! The wheel cladding on the WRX is gaudy imo, It makes the wheel "openings look ginormous. Todd I know you've had it for awhile but I'm loving the goatee buddy.
Great video. I wish Lexus made a counterpart to the GR Corolla. I know i would love the drive, but i really need a nicer interior.
They will. Look it up. Morizo drove it and did the intro. It’s a CUV, though. Search Lexus Morizo LBX.
GR rolla vs WRX is like the senior varsity captain vs the junior captain. They would be more comparable if Subaru didn’t get rid of the sti

What suspension you go with.
Fortune 500
How much wtq? Any transmission issues?
that's not what they're talking about, they're talking about the poor handling, even with coilovers on my wife's new VB it handles poorly and that's because it's running Forester and Crosstrek open front diff and open rear diff drivetrain. Subaru really needs to bring back optional STI package that it did in previous models that way we could get front LSD, center DCCD diff, and rear LSD and compete against GR Corolla and Civic Type R.
@@panderalexander for daily driving is not bad. I’m sure someone will make a rear and front LSD for the VB soon than later.
I will pick a Corolla every time
We can’t talk about these cars without talking about their real world prices right now.
Awesome review! Thanks for posting.
Every part of my upbringing wants a Corolla gr.
But…I’m lazy and want to just cruise. So I’m leaning RC350 AWD.
Thanks for that 😉
That said, im not keen on the exterior looks (reminds me of a Mazda 3) and i think that does matter.
I’m on the fence about the WRX sedan but would already have a wagon or a hatchback in my driveway. I like the added practicality.
Used to own a 2019 STI and really missed how analog that car felt compared to a GR Corolla I drove. Shame cars have gotten so muted
I dunno I have both the only thing really analog about the sti is the gauges. To me they both feel very similar leaning to my sti with the better stick feel but reliability I can sleep better at night with the gr. The fact that the sti or wrx could explode even at stock was a no go..
Such a great car, had to sell during Covid tho
Saw a circuit edition Corolla today and I'd probably trade my WRX for one. A hatchback s just so much more practical, and the GR has a way better designed interior instead of the stupid massive screen that is in the new Subarus. I absolutely HATE the body cladding on the WRX and would have to factor in replacements from Aeroflow dynamics into my purchase price.
Can we get updated video with both autos when you can😊

@Subaru
Nice review, thanks.

Thank you. We are glad to have you watching and enjoying what we do!!
Picking up my GR Corolla Premium tomorrow at MSRP, can't wait :D
Which dealer? Tnx
Good choice
WHITE Hot take on the current gen WRX:
The "less fun out of the box" and "no STI" approach makes a ton of sense. Two reasons:
1) People (not everyone!) have always demanded a more refined and comfortable everyday WRX.
Meanwhile, the GR is almost untunable and is surprisingly prone to issues (the recent Savagegeese video goes into more detail about this!)
I really respect and admire the Corolla GR!
Agree, although I’ve seen some major markups for the Corolla up here in Canada- gouging!
Different trim models make it so hard to have a even comparison but it all comes down to preference
When did Mirror Universe Todd take over the channel?
flexo todd
I thought the same thing!
Regarding priorities, I spend all my time driving behind the wheel. The car that provides the best experience behind the wheel is the one to have.
Predictable I'd pick the WRX ALL YEAR🇺🇲🇯🇵 good review
GRC core has heated seats but no heated steering wheel, which is only available in the circuit, premium and Morizo
@DannySarbs heated seats are available on the Core when you option the winter package. This one didn't have that. It's a must in my book.
My 2023 Core with the Winter, Performance, and "Entertainment" option packages would like a word. The heated seats and steering wheel all work very well on cold days.
I had a 2011 WRX limited hatch and loved it. If they started selling a hatch again I would buy one the next day.
Hope someday you guys would have the opportunity to take a ride on the fiesta st mk8, not sold in the US but worth to have a check.
More car makers need to enter this segment so the evo can come back.
STI driver for the last decade. Its just so sad what has happened to Subaru. I've committed to keep my STI until I either crash it or die driving it.
God that infotainment screen is horrible. How soon until manufacturers get common sense back and integrate those things.
Bought my Son his first car WR Blue WRX GT and I have to say it’s a blast to drive it’s not my old StI’s but drives awesome
Honestly the only thing I hate about the infotainment system is the hvac controls . If they were physical buttons it’d be perfect.
Its my belief that Toyota's controlling stake is preventing Subaru from releasing an STI model until GR Corolla sales start slowing down.
I think you're right. Also ever since Toyota started influencing Subaru the personality of their cars have completely changed in my opinion.
I was wondering about this too! There are just too many sings that indicate Subaru was planning to make an Sti version also.
1. The engine is so easily can be turned.
2. The chassis is super stiff, it can handle much more
3. The “ coin holder” can be perfectly flip with an old SI drive system module.
4. In sport plus setup of the WRX GT the suspension and steering feel like an Sti.
The GR Corolla is a much better car than the STI ever was
@@MrCovert23hard to beat the STI transmission, and that’s without taking the GR overheating issue into account.
Nonsense.
Halo cars don't make money plain and simple.
❤ Toyota GR Corolla ❤️
I'll tell you why the body cladding and why the - visually, at least - ride height appears to be higher. This generation of WRX is a vibe check by Subaru to see if the WRX customer will tolerate this car being turned into a CUV.
I have the WRX VB with the auto with 30k miles now. It’s a fine car and I’m completely happy with it.
The new non turbo BRZ literally beats the WRX in a rolling race. There is no excuse for this!
Love both cars though, and I’m just glad that we are spoiled enough to have both options.
great video
