Year and a half ago bought a WRX premium for just under $32K. The jittery ride and peaky motor of the old WRX were gone, heated seats, linear throttle response sold me. But I'm 73, no longer a boy racer, just an old guy who appreciates decent handling, enough power, and a manual.

Yeah I actually LIKE the WRX. I even like how it looks. And the icing on the cake is that you can actually buy a WRX for below sticker. I recently saw one that was running on slightly lower ride height (about .5 - 1.0" all around) and a custom quad exhaust and it looked fantastic. Don't get me wrong, I love the GR Corolla and if up to me, I'd take a GR Corolla Circuit just out of sheer charm, but the WRX still has a place here!

I drove the GR Corolla for a day. It was very impressive, it gripped, took turns really quick. Its the best AWD car I have ever driven. However, it also made me discover that I'm more of a RWD purist and enjoy the communication and scalpel dynamics of the MX5 and 86 more.

Hi, from Japan!! And thank you for picking two Japanese cars. I think both cars are good and fun. However, Toyota makes more hustle and fun cars recently. On the contrary, Subaru makes more gentle and safety cars recently. I feel same ways on GR86 and BRZ. GR86 is more exciting. BRZ is more gentle.

The oil pressure issue mainly pertains to cars taken to a race track, especially with high grip racing-type tires. There are track users engaged in looking for an aftermarket remedy for the oil pressure issue. www.youtube.com/@900BRZ
Regarding the issue with the sealant Subaru uses being overapplied and collecting in the pan, there is still not a clear answer to whether that is a real problem. Doesn't seem good to me, but it doesn't seem to be associated with any engine failures so far.

People know it’s something special and that is just such a cool feeling. I cannot emphasize how many looks and turning heads I get just driving this thing. @myredpyramidthing it is a nice vehicle. It's just that in Canada the base is $50k, while I paid $39k for my wrx limited. And even though the wrx interior is not luxury by any means, it far exceeds that of the base grc for a significantly cheaper price tag. Toyota really needs to up the ante in that department.

Saw a GRC Circuit Ed. In a Best Buy parking lot and started my research, 2 days and 20 dealerships later I drove my New 2024 GRC Circuit Ed. Off the lot, it is the best car I’ve ever driven, I feel so connected to the car and the road. I couldn’t be happier and will never ever sell it. I knew it was gonna be good but really had no idea it just how good it is! Also, it’s my first Toyota and after only 5 days, I’m a loyalist! I had better service and treatment at the Toyota dealer than I ever have at a BMW and my wife’s Range Rover dealership! Thank you Toyota for making the perfect car!

I had a Lexus RCF for almost 9 years, highly modded with high end coilovers and bolt ons, it wasn’t a slouch by any means. Then I saw the Toyota GR up close and personal (the owner gave me a full tour). I couldn’t get it off my mind, literally 4 days later I was trading my Lexus for the GR Corolla circuit edition. Driving it has me all smiles, and the car from every single angle is gorgeous. I often find myself going to the garage just to admire it. The car is such a thrill to drive so nimble and light footed with an eagerness to be driven. The GR Corolla is the first car I have owned right out the box that has me quite satisfied. With my Lexus and previous Mercedes AMG there was always something I felt they lacked from factory and hence all the mods l would do to the cars. With the GR it’s so perfect, I’m just so satisfied with it stock. Can’t wait for the break in period to be over so I can extract the most out of that engine. I totally agree with everything you said about your experience, truly a phenomenal car! All those who say it’s just a Corolla are totally clueless, even the interior is very agreeable to me. I don’t in anyway feel like I have downgraded

Got a chance to drive the GR Corolla and don't have any trouble admitting it is sharper and a better performer. But... I have a 30 mile commute to work each way and have three boys. Add Cobb AP, custom tune & intake to add 80+ whp & 120 ft-lb for ~$1300. I'm really nostalgic for cars that have spartan, low-rent interiors. Cheap, low quality interiors give me a better feeling like I can USE the car. There's a charm to vehicles that do the dynamics part inherently well, but leave the interior space to the driver to be as tidy or as messy, as cared for or lived in, as they choose to make it. If I were well off and young in 2004, I would have bought an Impreza STi. If I were young today, I'd have that Corolla. They exist in the same space for me, personally.

I honestly still can't get over the looks and that giant touch screen in the new WRX. That is why I ended up trading my 2019 BRZ for my current 2023 Honda Civic Si. Modified the new WRX looks great, however in stock form it looks like a sports-sedan had a baby with a off-roady crossover. I do think the WRX is definitely the best value for money right now, which is why they are selling really well.
That GR Corolla is amazing in every metric. What a machine!

One thing reviewers won't mention is the VB WRX comes from the factory *very* under tuned. A simple OTS with zero mods will make ~310+ HP to all 4 wheels. My 2023 VB WRX with no mechanical mods and a pro tune will absolutely dust even a tuned GR Corolla. I'm hitting 0-60 in like 4.6 seconds...

this is true but you have to understand most reviewers are reviewing a product that is how it came from the factory, how the OEM sold the car, not its tuning potential. So depending on the type of buyer like someone who is an enthusiast, of course you're gonna research which one is better for mods. But when OEMs gives a reviewer a press car, they arent interested in letting someone talking about mods.

So I bought the WRX back in October 2022 after putting in a deposit for a GR86. Toyota kept delaying delivery so I decided with winter approaching to go with the WRX instead. My girlfriend was also pleased I went from a "4" seater coupe to a 5 seater sedan. The GTC was basically unobtanium here in my part of Canada. I have yet to actually see one in person. The WRX is exactly what you guys said, a more compliant, family friendly sports car. It's awesome, does exactly what I need it to do. I can fit things in it without issue, haul people, while also taking it on the backroads, dirt roads and have a blast in the winter. Yeah it's a little ugly, but whatever, it's quirky IMO.

whereas the WRX has a big 2.4l 4 cyl. I think the WRX has more overhead especially when you start adding downpipes and turbo upgrades. but, there goes your reliability. so its all about what you want and how much youre willing to spend to get it. • @TheDrNinjaman
      @TheDrNinjaman 6 месяцев назад

This is a common misconception. Toyota did their homework and put the all the money into the powertrain on this car. 1.6l triple sounds small, but it is built for power. One fewer piston means that the ones you do have can be built stronger for the same price. As is the transmission. I've heard of tuners getting 750hp out of this new motor already. I had
04 WRX that I put a stage 2 kit and tune on and reading over the forums, you have to do a lot of supporting mods to the driveline to go to really big power in the WRX. Obviously, time will tell, but for myself, more power just means more frequent trips to the pump. 300hp is just perfect for me in this size of car. Plenty quick and I love that it gets 30mpg on the highway and anytime I can keep my right foot under control. And the brakes! The GR is such a driver's car right out of the box. Everything I had made my WRX into by the end, but with a factory warranty and way better fuel economy.

  • @2003evodave

Just did a few hours of hard driving in the Gr premium and a Subi TR. So much so we had to refuel both.
Definitely the Gr noticeably has more power and has a much more fun rev happy engine with a great shifter. However it’s loud, the interior is cheap, the seats are just only okay plus they place you in a more truck or SUV like orientation which feels like you are sitting on top of the car instead of inside and the rough ride quality as a daily comes into question. Plus that rev happy engine seams to always need to have the RPMs up high even though it has more torque than the WRX. Fuel economy is not great.
The WRX TR has more room everywhere, better ride quality, is just plain easy to drive and has a better ability to handle bad bumpy road surfaces more comfortable seats, more options, nicer cabin and it’s materials.
Both have their strong points and weak points. Bottom line is the GR is a better track car and the TR is better at everything else. If you want cheaper insurance, better ride quality and comfort, more room, utility, MPG, etc. the choice is obvious.

My 2023 Core with the Winter, Performance, and "Entertainment" option packages would like a word. The heated seats and steering wheel all work very well on cold days.

Regarding priorities, I spend all my time driving behind the wheel. The car that provides the best experience behind the wheel is the one to have.

I’m debating, should I save almost 10k and go with the Subaru
I’m scared I’m gonna regret my decision in the future, the Corolla has that mythic car feeling

Thank you for the great review "yet" WRONG!!! The WRX wagon (Levoreg) is made in 6 speed "Manual" transmission but, sadly is offered in Mexico and not the US. If Subaru wanted to "Wipe" the Corolla GR in sales they should bring the Manual wagon, to the US. P.S. I was just kidding Love y'all's review and, Thanks again. 😃👍

Can be had in my town for 30-35k new which makes it a hard to beat bargain. There is even a 2023 with 13k miles for 28k at the dealer.

The deluxurized that the Corolla got is exactly what I want. In a car like this I'm not buying it for infotainment or nice ricaro seats or lumbar support. Or heated seats. Id be buying it for the pure heart of a sports car. I think car review channels are losing sight of this in a sports car review. Id be okay with all the smart sensors and all that and Android Auto being taken out to get this amazing car for cheaper heat ac and a Bluetooth radio is all I want in a sports car

Is it unusual that I've set my shift light at 6300 RPM? My rationale behind this decision stems from observing Dyno charts consistently indicating peak performance at this specific engine speed. Despite potentially conflicting with my OCD tendencies, aligning the shift light with this data seems appropriate. Moving from the GR86 to the GR Corolla's interior was a bit of a jarring transition. However, my affection for my "Grolla" remains unwavering. It's an exceptional machine that, once in motion, eclipses any perceived shortcomings. Fortunately, I managed to procure a GR Corolla equipped with the performance, cold weather, and premium audio packages, a luxurious indulgence I thoroughly enjoy, particularly during the winter months.
There are several modifications I wholeheartedly recommend. First and foremost, I suggest replacing the shift knob with the nearly half-pound GR Shift knob, upgrading the pitch stop mount, and enhancing the shifter linkage with solid aluminum bushings. It's prudent to retain the OEM bushings, as they are integrated with the linkage part number and are priced at $512. These three modifications significantly enhance the shifting experience, resulting in a noticeable improvement. For those concerned about Noise, Vibration, Harshness (NVH), I advocate for the Sxth Element pitch stop mount. Constructed of solid bonded rubber, it gradually softens with use, effectively resolving notchy shifts and minimizing the likelihood of missing the gate.

I'll tell you why the body cladding and why the - visually, at least - ride height appears to be higher. This generation of WRX is a vibe check by Subaru to see if the WRX customer will tolerate this car being turned into a CUV.

Good video. I really thought the Toyota was the one, all boxes checked. Too tight inside, b pillar was on my shoulder, just not comfortable for me. Nothing wrong with the wrx but feels like its missing something, hard to articulate.
