  • Katherine, 59, is retired and lives an active life in Mexico. When it became clear that she needed a new hip, she learned about a new technique that allows for a much faster recovery.
A friend who is a physical therapist in the Upper Valley, and had a hip resurfacing done at DHMC, recommended that Katherine talk to Dr. Ivan Tomek. "At the time I thought, 'All the way from Mexico? Come all the way up here? Can I go any farther to go get surgery?'"
But the more she learned about the surgery and Dr. Tomek's approach, the better she felt.
"With the anterior approach, no muscles are cut. I'm not a doctor-I don't know a lot about it-but I thought, 'No muscles cut means faster recovery'-and that was one of my goals, to get up and about as quickly as possible.
"Here at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, Deb Jadczak, the nurse-coordinator for the Ortho department was wonderful. She was willing to take my Skype phone calls, she was willing to email me... Dr. Tomek was extremely knowledgeable, as I said; very patient. He was able to answer my questions in the way I needed to have them answered.
"I've been out of surgery only two weeks and two days... Two days after my surgery, I came home with just one crutch. I came up two flights of stairs with just one crutch. By the third day the PT came to the house and had me walking with no aids-no walker, no crutch, anything. The fourth day I went out to Ben & Jerry's for ice cream...
"I have been absolutely, totally amazed at how quickly I was up and about and, not only that, how little pain I had... I want to do everything I haven't been able to do. I don't want my life hindered by the kind of pain that I was experiencing before."

Be thankful for your experience. It wasn't that way for me. My doctor was great and all involved. I am getting better now two weeks later but pain has been slow to go away. I have no regrets getting my hip replacement surgery because the arthritis pain was horrible.

I get so frustrated with people who put up this type of video. First, I went through a posterior hip replacement for my sister last year and saw what she experienced. Secondly, I just had an anterior hip replacement six days ago. So, I can do a pretty good critique on this woman’s comments. First and foremost, you do come out of anterior surgery at least three weeks ahead of posterior. However, for her to make these claims that she was out and about doing things in three days is total baloney. Your body has just gone through trauma and anesthesia folks. No doggone way did I feel like going out anywhere. Your body is recuperating and adjusting to new hardware! Then the physician’s comments that they don’t recommend PT is ludicrous. I just came from PT today and told my therapist what this doctor said. He told me that he had a 45 yo friend that was told the same thing. He did no therapy and guess what, he still walks with a limp because he did not retrain his muscles. You are doing so much guarding when you are in hip pain that the body has to reprogram itself. I shake my head in disgust at the stuff people post on youtube. Beware!

There may very well be some validity to what you are saying, but if it one thing I have heard over and over is that everyone is different in their recovery. Did you have a spinal or general anesthesia? How are you doing now?

Like many others, Katherine decided to wait as long as possible before hip surgery because of fear of durability issues with the replacement.

I am 57 years old, had anterior total hip replacement 3 weeks ago. Can walk well without crutches or rollator, zero pain! Did a 1 hour bike ride 2 days ago! So pleased with the progress but keep exercising and apply ice and little Tylenol. Granted I was fairly fit prior to surgery just terrible hip pain the last year. Had a great surgeon and would highly recommend doing it.
