I am 2 months post op and unfortunately for me I'm just starting to walk on a cane, but I'm 54 years old and have lived with severe hip dysplasia my entire life. I received the same hip as Mary Lou and I couldn't be happier. Don't wait as long as I did. My muscles were so weak in my left leg that I literally have to learn to walk all over again. It's the best thing I ever did. I am living PAIN FREE for the first time in 35 years!

She's so right. Pain changes you. I suffered every day for 4 years, because in the treatment of the hip (misdiagnosed), they found out I had cancer, and I had to use all my hip treatment money to deal with that. So it was another 2 years till I could afford the hip. I was slammed up against the invisible wall of the limit of pain I could handle and still work and function as a human. But I'm a teacher - my last 4 years' worth of students have no idea who I am or what I'm really like because of the overwhelming, constant, 24/7 pain. And they're kids - they can't even imagine it, so they can't understand (thank God they can't). So glad it's done. I'm on Day 11, been off pain meds since Day 3. Happy!!!!

I am 51 and I am told that THR is an option. My gait is off like Mary Lou's was in the beginning of video, well maybe not that bad. I was also a gymnast as a child and very active, I totally feel her denial. I am very glad she put this out for us to see. Are you walking like she did and going down stairs like she was sideways? I can still go down straight. I pray everything goes well with your surgery, I am still very scared :-(

At the age of 60 I had bi lateral hip operation, just under two years ago. 100% successful. This was a NHS job at the Golden Jubilee Hospital Glasgow. I few back to Orkney and walked onto a ferry within 4 days . The key things are attitude of mind, and obsessive physiotherapy. Walk move and exercise.

In 2018, Dr Parsley did both my hips. I still remember -- upon learning that he had done Mary Lou Retton's hips -- I asked him: "Will I be able to do vaults and somersaults after my surgery?" He told me -- "No. But you will be able to walk without a cane." And that was a good enough result for me. And to this day, I thank the Good Lord Above for bringing Dr. Brian Parsley into my life. It truly was -- as the former gymnast (and fellow Longhorn) put it -- "MIRACULOUS." It was basically a life-changing event. Thanks again to Dr Parsley and the staff at the M-HOSH (Memorial Hermann Orthopedic and Surgical Hospital)

Getting ready in 4 weeks for THR and reconstruction at age 56. My recovery will be complicated by the fact that I had a major stroke 7 years ago and my paralyzed side is getting the new hip. Those exercises look impossible for someone who is paralyzed. I cannot use a walker or crutches because of the paralyzed arm on that side. Mary Lou inspires me a lot.

This video did a very good job of easing my fear of total hip replacement surgery. I am 3 days post surgery and getting around pretty well. I'm still using a walker for balance at this point but i'm not having any trouble getting around. My doctor did the anterior approach surgery on my left hip. I have less pain now then when I went into surgery. As of right now, my left quad is super weak and feels like its cramped up. Onward and upward from here!

It feels like my new hip is higher. But I'm sure the hip is still healing because each day I walk much better. Minimal pain. Just the healing now. Once this limp goes I'm set. Doing my daily exercises which is a must. I did it and whoever is considering it. You can do it!! In hind sight recovery is not what I thought it would be. It has been a positive process. I'm doing well. I'm somewhat limited still to some exercises but everyone progress at their own pace. Can't wait to continue to see how it heals. It's really amazing.

I go for my total hip, replacement on March 3-2020. I injured it in 1992 and i have procrastinated all these years. I really can’t get much worse. I kept stalling because I was told I am a complex case and there were some surgeons who wouldn’t touch me or said they “might” be able to aliviate some of the pain, but couldn’t do anything about my range of motion restrictions. I basically take a little bigger than baby steps and can’t open my legs apart more than a foot. It’s like they lock. I can’t stand still for more than about 10 minutes or I cease right up and can’t lift my legs more than about 6”. I am getting the second one done about 3 months later. Thank you for this video Mary Lou! . I’m getting my THR in 4 days. Im only 52. As a competitive figure skater for years I learned to work through the pain too. You feel like you just need to be tougher. I got my first MRI on my left hip 20 years ago and I found out I had a labral tear in my cartilage that cushions the hip joint. I’ve been suffering from intermittent hip pain for 30 years! She’s absolutely right. The pain far outweighs my fear now. I have no doubt it’s time. I think I forgot how to walk without limping. I can’t wait to feel normal again.

Mine is in 6 weeks...I live alone..so taking care of 2 cats and a bunny is going to suck. But my hip is grinding bone on bone. Its like hamberger around the joint. They--the physical therapist at the hospital had me walking the same day. Before the surgery my ability to walk was getting worse and worse.

What a great story! Brought tears to my eyes. I just had Anterior RHR three weeks ago. I hear conflicting thoughts regarding physical therapy. That less is more and not as important as one would think. Then we watch this and see lots of PT going on. I've read of many who got a bit too vigorous too fast thus slowing up their recovery. What are your thoughts? Thanks!

  • @Sherman62

Had anterior THR 2/6/18 (3 days ago) and came home yesterday. I am feeling pretty good already. Most of the day 1 Tylenol LG about every 5 hours does the trick but I take 1 Tramadol before bed to ensure a good nights sleep. Results will surely vary.
I am 300 pounds of pure muscle of course lol, and that will probably slow down my return to full activity. I feel like I can already put 200 lb on the leg with NO NOTICEABLE PAIN but more than that, I feel. Obviously if I weighed less, the potential for rapid return is almost unbelievable.
This is my most first such operation but I think it speaks highly of the anterior approach. If your pain cannot be controlled with medication and surgery is an option, there is simply no decision to it. Do not let fear cause you serious disability.

I don't know the pain of simple walking because I never had such a problem but those who have the pain can explain the daily dread of walking. I ask them can they imagine the ancient and medieval times people who walked in pain what it was like ?????

I always say that about many medical issues. My GF had a benign cyst on her ovary. While today that does not seem like too big of deal. She knew something was wrong because she would start to get up in the night having to go to the rest room but then not being able to go. The cyst had gotten so large it was pushing her bladder to the side blocking the urine from leaving the bladder. After she would get up walk around then she could go a little bit then a bit more. Now 100+ years ago a diagnosis and surgery to remove would have been unlikely and she probably would have died a painful miserable death. This day and age, she had outpatient surgery and was back in normal routine in a week. Amazing.

The pain after 4 years did it for me. simple things became a real struggle. I walked exactly the same way as you did. I experienced alot of the same as you did pre-op and post- op. The one thing I will say, the pain is 100% gone outside of the incision. My muscle memory is returning slowly but surely. Its almost like learning how to walk again correctly. Im 53 years old and have regrets going threw with the surgery, I really had no other option but surgery. Your rehab is very important and I cant stress that enough. YOU HAVE TO DO THE REHAB! Im extremely active and workout 4 days aweek so this wasn't an issue for me. Im glad to see others are having the same success as myself. My doc was fantastic, Dr. William Hozack out of The Rothman Institute in Philadelphia. Good luck to anyone thinking about hip replacement. It really did give me my life back.

Most folks handle a THR very well . The first one is the easiest your recovery time and pain levels are minimal in most cases . For me that was the case my first replacement in 1995 went very well I was extremely happy . By 2008 my insert had become lose as the insert shaft started to slowly move down past the original position also becoming painful to walk / sit / stand etc . By Sep 2008 I was in having a revision THR #2 . That went very well at the time but to my dismay by 2018 / 2019 the shaft was on the move once again this time it moved 20 mm plus down my thigh bone ( femur ) resulting in a very painful times . Today is the 29th of June 5 days after my 3rd THR all have been on the left side . I must add that my hip suffered congenital dislocation from birth resulting in the left hip being premature ( No socket & out of shape femur head ) . At 13 I had bone grafts to the area in order to produce a socket for the femur to be seated into . And that's why at 47 years old I've had 3 THR Along with a number of bone graft . I have always worked and even raced bmx for many years as a jr . But as an older man it just gets harder and longer to recover . This bad run has nothing to do with the materials used or the surgeons as I've had two of the best orthopedic surgeons in Australia . W Huffan ( Bill ) / S Williams whom I cant be more grateful too cheers . Please take care out there .

Finally got my left hip done at age 42 and should have done it at 35. When I started feeling the signs on the right hip, I didn’t wait as long. This information has been mostly scrubbed from the internet, but its still mentioned in legal filings (see Plaintiffs, ALAN ROSSI, MD; JAMES MILLARD; and ELLEN PARDEE, Washington State Superior Court).

Just had mine done a month ago. I'm walking without help and without a limp. I was an all around athlete, including some gymnastics and I'm concerned about a permanent loss of range of motion. I was a great skier before, and it sounds like I should be able to return to that, but I'd like to be able to pull my knee up to my chest, cross my legs comfortably in any position, and do the splits (well, pretty close anyway)... but I'm not certain how much of those I'll be able to regain the ability to do. But I'll find out -- on my bucket list is a full twisting back layout on skis (might turn out to be the actual bucket... LOL -- wish me luck!!).

Teary eyed as I type, I have been in that 6 month stage as of now however, I did get stem cell injections in Columbia in May so it is just at 6 months but all my daily trips to gym, massage, swimming and hot/cold packs not improving. My left hip was replaced 7 years ago and I am still pain free and could not be more pleased but you must put in the work. This Division 1 swimmer from the late 70's 80's believes that we were sadisticly [sic] over training and all! my mates I stay in contact with have exact same issues and it is not all arthritis though that is what all the M.D.'s want to convince you of. So i am beginning the process of my right hip being replaced and I only chant the outcome is the same as the left. Also had a shoulder surgery which was successful 6 years ago, that was a real bugga. I was diagnosed with bilateral osteoarthritis at 36 years old in 1998. Right hip worse than left ( bone on bone for past 5 years) I'm not gonna be able to hold out much longer. The pain, stiffness and loss of range of motion affect so many aspects of your life. I have fought it for so long because the replacements have a finite lifespan and I fear living my final years in a wheelchair more than the surgery itself. But, I'm suffering so much that I will have to do it very soon and let the chips fall where they may. My brother had both of his hips replaced in one year at the age of 48. ( metal on metal 😢). At least I have made it to almost 57. Thank you Mary Lou for sharing your story and giving inspiration
