Making of the Destiny - Stargate Universe - Modeling the Ship

- This is the Ship "Destiny" from the tv series Stargate Universe. I started this project months ago, and have been slowly working at it.
This is just a quick screen capture of me modeling some of the outer hull parts.
The ship is not even 50% completed yet, and the poly count is 1.5 million. More than likely, it will be much higher once this is finished.
Right now im modeling everything with a symmetry object. That way, most of this stuff only have to be modeled on the left side, and then the symmetry object will automatically mirror everything over to the right side..... basically I only have to model the left side of the ship, although some parts are not symmetrical.
Once its done, ill try my hand at re-creating the FTL (Faster than light) effect with the light, stars, and particles being displaced around the ship.
I dont even know how many hours ive got into this as of now. Could possibly be upwards of 50+.
And of course, like always, all of this is modeled in Cinema 4D. Кино
I think I remember reading that the hi-res Destiny model they use for the show has about 3 million polygons, so you're on the right track!
The premise of SG:U was absolutely amazing. A stranded crew attempting to finish a mission started by the ancients a millennia ago to investigate the origins of the known universe. The ship was beautiful, the soundtrack was sublime and it had such promise.
I felt it was unfortunately let down by some weak casting and plots. Plot arcs like the Lucian Alliance attempted takeover were dumb and lessened what should have been high-minded science fiction.
Great modelling too, thanks for the video. :)
I had two questions about the ship:
1. How did you make the space lighting? Could you give a short rundown on what you did?
2. How did you make the basic shape of the ship? Did you use an extrude object and a spline?
By the way, I think your work is absolutely amazing and very inspiring to me. I would incredibly grateful for even a short answer to those two questions.
Love the ship!
Very well done. One of the best models of Destiny that I've seen on RUclips.
This is what Destiny intended from the moment it entered the star system :)
Wow, the level of detail is staggering.
Holy black holes! This work is awesome, I can't understand how can some people fuss abbout how many cannons there were...I just started to play around with 3d modelling and I know it takes very hard work and patience to create the smallest little thingy on that ship! Keep up the good work, it's a beautiful ship. Can't wait to see it flying ;D
And people it doesn't really matter that the ancients kick ass with two barrels or three :DDD
@christheferal Thanks! Yes, im going to try the FTL effect in C4D. If I cannot get the results I want, ill try it After Effects.
I have made a lot of progress on the ship since uploading this vid. I'll have to upload another one soon to show my progress.
my brother you have WAY more patience than I do. on that note this looks bad ass. cant wait to see it done.
Awesome work man!! Cinema 4d + destiny = unbreakable bound! Great work again
Great work. Wonderfully detailed. When completed, I'd bet this could almost pass as the production model. ;)
looks really good, the design is clearly ancient...
this is my most favorite modelling vid. I love destiny. this makes me happy inside. keep up the outstanding work!
That is some really cool music and really cool modeling. Great job dude :)
This is just amazing man!!
@Johnthepredalien Some of the windows are a texture that I made (with alpha), and other windows are cut into the hull using a boole. I was able to use the boole cut in some areas without messing the geometry up. Otherwise, using a boole can quickly get messy.
@nepotrebno5 I have made a lot of progress since this video was uploaded. I'll have to make another video soon.
this is insanely awesome
@DarkWaterDigital A light dome is a hemispherical array of lights that surrounds the scene.
so realistic! very nice!
@christheferal Thanks Chris! The music is from a "soundtrack extraction". You can search youtube for SGU soundtrack extraction and find several clips.
@DarkWaterDigital Sure...
1. Lighting is a light dome, and an infinite light.
2. Basic shape of the ship was created by drawing a spline and using a extrude nurb.
Thanks!
This is so cool. I hope you finish the model soon. You should make it available to people as well. Maybe charge some cash for your fantastic effort!
wow ! cool stuff !!
real artiste!!!! big respect
WONDERFUL
Got ya. Ok, will do that. I think one thing that helped save me time, might save you time as well is when you do put those lines, you subdivide some of the cubes and then extrude them with the "preserve groups" as unchecked
All the small details are there for close up shots. I could have used normal maps, but then I would have to create them all. I would rather have geometry with a lot of instances.
Thank you very much sir! I hope to have this ship completed soon.
great work !!!!!!!
Amazing!!
that's beautiful....
Waaaaaaaaaaaahhh!!! OMG, awesome job!!
You must have a render farm for a project like this?
Cinema 4D power!! :D
@JustSomeRandomNewb Yes, but I think the one they use in the show was modeled in Modo. Not exactly sure, as it could be Lightwave, but its all done the same way.
The lines that stick out on the general platform, like the patterns that go down along the ship
AMAZING
Extreme work...You are crazy man :-)))
Ok, sure will. I havent yet completed the ship, but once I do ill be informing my subscribers about it.
wow serious skill lol, i have had this programe for a while and have tried to make destiny on it but i stuggled to even get the shape right tbh i really can't wait to see the finnished model
@zedzoom1 Both of them are equals, as far as being tricky to create. Both have an insane amount of detail.
amazing !
Yes
@Jackclivesim LOL I dont know much about gmod, but if I decide to do anything, it will have to wait until the ship is completed. There is still a lot left to do before its finished.
Good job! :)
@izanmarvel Thanks! No render farm. Just an 8-core workstation. :)
@HiroStarcraft2 Its just a simple orange colored luminance material applied to the window.
@christheferal I didnt even know that they canceled it. Then again, I wasnt really into the show. I was more into the storyline of the ship. Oh well, I still plan to finish mine though. :)
Not yet. Id say its about 85% completed. Ive been tied up with work. I hope to get back to this soon.
this is awsome. wish i could do stuff like that but i havent got the patience
@bartat404 Its actually two songs... from the episodes "Air" and "Light".
Thank you!
Dude, u rock!...i wish i can do that too!
this is god like i can cry for it :D xD
@MrGibbsOfficial Sure. I dont see why not. With only 2 cores, your rendering will be slower, but you should still be able to model the ship without any problems.
Nice model, wish I had the skills of yours :)
@muodypl2 Everything was modeled according to HD screen caps from the show, including all the cannons. :)
@Jackclivesim It would take some serious work to do it. The modeling is only about 50% completed. I would have to go back and redo most of it to get it to work. Way too much work. lol
Ah, ok. I see what you mean now. That was all modeled with cubes placed manually across the top and bottom of the hull.
@valeriy3000 The music is from the soundtrack. (extracted soundtrack).
Hello
I'm at this time watching the show, again, still amazing...
And it has brought me to look for a 3D in order to print or render it, d'ont know exactly...
I can see that your model is pretty amazing.
How is it now? Is it finished?
Is there a chance you could share it ?
Thanks
great model! very inspiring and learned a few tricks from this. By the way why don't you just use the path select tool when creating splines from paths? saves selecting/deselecting paths
+Tristan Gieler At the time I made this (2010) I had completely forgotten about path select. lol
realy great i love sgu and today starts the season 2 . ( in germany )
can you put your project (the destiny) in .obj and give the download link pls? :S
@ShepperdOneill Ah.. I'll try to hunt them down. Either that, or just rip it from your video. It's quite relaxing it is. EXCELLENT work by the way, it makes me feel proud.
I also wish I had a hold of your Atlantis model, however I don't work in C4D, only in Max... sooooo Yeah. :\ I could probably pick up C4D in the future, though.. :D I still wish I had that model... Haha, the only one I got is SGA-3D's Atlantis model, and it's safe to say it lacks detail.
@MrGibbsOfficial Sure. BOXX workstation. 8-cores, 4.0Ghz, 4 GB RAM, Quadro FX 1700
Hello, I amd working on my own model of destiny, as I was unable to find anything good enough online, and was wondering if you would be willing enough to provide me with shots from the sides, top, bottom, front, and back, of your ship. It;s a beautiful model, and I hope to make something close to it. Also, how did you go about the initial shaping of the ship? Di you use reference pictures that you imported into C4D and traced along, or did you just eyeball it? Thanks very much
@Jackclivesim No. There is way too much detail in this ship to use in any gaming environment.
you are a big boss
@ShepperdOneill Thanks!
really impressive! what kind of illumination is used in the scene at this video? seems so fast with good result
holy fuck dude! that's awesome
It's a damn good model, but I am pretty sure that only the main cannon had 3 barrels, and the rest of the turrets were single-cannoned.
@troy2062 Thanks! Thats what I was going for. lol :)
Holy crap. My machine could never render this. Well... not never, but I'd be collecting retirement before it finished rendering even one frame. :P
Wow. I wish I could model like that ;) My biggest problem basically is that I have absolutely no idea how I should create greebles and nurnies 'n stuff.
Very impressive! Did you finish this model?
@ShepperdOneill AAAGGHHHH I want to know which one. This song is driving me nuts. XD
oO i work only on 3dsmax but it's an exellent work on cinema 4d, how much polygons on this model ? great work.
@ShepperdOneill That's weird. I have rewatched the series for the 3rd time now (I know how it sounds like) and I have yet to notice that large turret with 3 barrels near the dome (watching Blockade and Gauntlet right now :P)
Anyway, I didn't expect a reply, to be honest. Thank you very much, and I hope you'll manage to finish this project. It could well be used in a game with an engine that could handle your 4 milion polys. :)
@HiroStarcraft2 The lights? Which lights?
thx :)
@ShepperdOneill
Sorry to keep bothering you, but what do you mean by a light dome?
Thanks very much for replying so quickly!
@ShepperdOneill I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I really wanted to see what that ship was all about.
I dont know if its possible to map this or not. The polygon count is rather high, (close to 4 million) and im not sure how well it would work if ported over to a game engine.
@payem86 Im using a light dome, and an infinite light.
Woah!!!!!!!!!!! Where can I find the download for the model and the music in the video?
@codebean Thanks man!
If I may ask, when will you update this video because a lot of us are eager to see what have you done with this project and what's the progress?
just wondering but, which do you think is more tricky to create atlantis or the destiny?
You know at first when you were close up....I was like...hmmm...must be still in the early going...looks ok...
Then you pulled back....
And now I need to change my pants...
:-(
@apraxeco1 lol thanks!
Which lines are to referring too?
how do you make the lines visible? Im making a starship as well
Yeah, I got that. But I mean when it is rendered, you have a lot of visible lines that stick out
@bartat404 Search for the youtube user baloznieks He has the music extraction vids. :)
Yeah, I know SGA-3D (Chris) from scifi-meshes(dot)com. He has several versions of Atlantis, but I dont know if he released his most recent version or not. There only seems to be a small handful of people that have tackled Atlantis by themselves.
Are you talking about the shading? Change the viewport shading to gouraud shading with lines.
@TheAirwavess Cinema 4D
@ShepperdOneill Well, the version he has publically released isn't very detailed. It makes nice for simple things, but I'm more of a hobbyist, and I just like the idea of the possession of a detailed model. I have detailed versions of the Daedalus and Aurora, but just not Atlantis... :(
Can you make a tutorial for the pipes 6.55 ?
@Jackclivesim Search youtube for "stargate universe soundtrack extraction".
*sigh* if only making starships in real life was that easy
If this is finished, could it be shared to the public? I'd love a download of this.
No, it is not yet finished. I have been working on it, trying to fix a lot of mesh errors. I plan to live stream soon, and continue working on it.
