Great video. I had the same error codes on mine (same engine, around 110 tkm), without the oil consumption issue. They would come and go about once every 2-3 months, always right after starting the car with a cold engine. They became more frequent after a year of ignoring them and started popping up in the middle of the drive. I cleaned and checked the solenoids and they seemed fine. The exhaust unit's electrical connector had quite a bit of oil on it, I didn't think about it much. In any case, I switched the intake with the exhaust unit and the code migrated from the exhaust to the intake. That was clear enough, I changed the malfunctioning unit and that fixed the issue. No more codes for 20tkm. My best guess is that the exhaust unit failed internally and was leaking oil through its casing. It probably couldn't hold pressure in some cases.
Many thanks to Jani for the video, super interesting! Is there a complex process for removing the intake vanos? Does the system need some calibration/adjustment once vanos are refitted? My thoughts on the slightly low resistance on vanos coils is just wear and tear alongside a little tolerance stackup; any further away from specification and I would seek to replace. Will be checking my own N13 soon enough... Thanks again Jani :)
The solenoid valve gets contaminated with dirt that accumulates from the oil residues over time. This leads into the system getting stuck and feeding less or more pressure into the camshaft. This valve sits next to the hydraulic chain tensioner - intake side.
The camshaft has oil rings at its end to make sure that the oil goes through it and on to the cam phaser. If the oil rings get damaged, the oil leaks. Pressure drops before reaching the cam phaser.
@@JaniVoutilainen Hi, thanks for your videos, they are very helpful. I am currently replacing my head gasket, do you have any idea where I can find torques settings for this engine for head bolts and exhaust manifold and inlet manifold. Is there anywhere I can get a list of torque settings ... thanks for any info ..
I think this engine has dynamic oil pressure, check the Oil pressure regulation solenoid valve and the oil pressure from the live data. 130304 maybe a consequence fault of the oil pressure problem.
I have a 116 model 2013. I have the same error with the check bulb lit. I use Liqui Moly 5W30 oil, and my car has traveled 90,000 km. How can I fix the problem..High oil pressure and the lantern valve..Please reply and advise..Does the car need 5 liters of oil or not? 4 and a half
2 intake y exhaust el del turbo es el exhaust el otro está cerca de la varilla del aceite generalmente los oring mueren y pierde aceite me paso con el cerca del turbo y salía olor aceite quemado junto con error de manejar moderado
last time my problem also facing this issues before, error code appear said vanos. in the end i change 2 new one instead of troubleshooting, but of cuz the way u doing are the best. but the vanos there got seal right. maybe the seal is harden notice a lot of leaking due to harden seal gasket ? but my car now no more oil disappear issues but still 5/40 grade of engine oil a lot of people saying 5k to 7k mileage is fine to missing 1L +- i don't wan to know and see by checking piston haha :( if really bad i heart break and my pocket are hurt
@@mathieunagel812 how do i get ista? Have a similar problem on same car. Used to be 1 litre every 7k now down to 4k. Still well within spec but...Planning to do the timing chain and check the psv. Have 165k on the clock.
Great Job! The best car maintenance video which I have ever seen.

great video and diagnosis as always - keep up the good work :)

This is like looking at a detective movie. Waiting for the follow up.
Can you make a video on how to remove the rear o2 sensor on the cat please that would be amazing
I will certainly do it, as long as it is relevant for my car 👍

Did you checked the PCV membrane?
finally NEW FiX, but some of the fix not appear in your video :p
Was it a t30 that u use to pull it?

4.25l
Strangely enough I don’t have that pin ball valve in my oil filter housing. Where can I find info on this.
My pin ball valve fell into engin and broke it
Solo lleva 1 selenoide ????

Mine used also allot of oil, changed the timing set, valve stem seals and rockercover and still oil usage! Every 3500km 1 liter of liqui moly 5W40
That seems quite low. My 116i uses around 1 liter of 5W30 per 1000 miles.
@@jackg7492 pfff i had same with 5w30 thats why i switched to thicker 5w40 liqui moly top tec 4100.
That's not that bad, small turbo engines normally use oil, a lot do it straight from the factory.
@@kristoffer3000 now i have a Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2.0 and 0liter of oil @ 10000km!!! That prince engine Sucks!

Whats the purpose ??finally did you found the problem ? Why 1 litre for1000 klm ??I have EXACTLY same problem 😂😅
Switch to liqui moly 5w40 top tec 4100. Let it idle for 10 minutes and give full throttle, if you see blue smoke -> change valve stem seals.
