Local councils are the biggest hurdle to most potential builders and buyers. They just don't understand that the world has changed, we have a massive housing shortage, and average housing occupancy is plummeting. We no longer have 4.4 people per house and a nice quarter acre section. We haven't for almost 50 years. How do we get councils to change with the times?
I’m in the process of purchasing some land and I plan to build a tiny house for myself and then, depending on how much land, start a tiny home village for disabled people.
I heard in Florida there is this Tiny Home Community called Orlando Lakefront. My Mom told me that she heard another new tiny home community called Escape Tampa Bay Village.
I wouldn't want to park my tiny home in Florida because of the heat and the hurricanes.
I know there's a tiny home community in Colorado.
Hopefully tiny homes will be accepted and recognized as a regular home because many people since COVID happened are turning towards different living options like tiny homes.
I'm thinking of getting a tiny home in the future ☺️
Thank you for addressing this topic. I have pets since I have a end of life sanctuary. I cannot go into a RV park nor many cities with a 1-4 pet limit. I'm disabled so afraid to be too rural and so I feel stuck. I had to get rid of my THOW because my city fined me $28,000 for parking it on my property while I got Cancer Care away from home.
BTW I posted somewhere else and was offered residency in their lovely community (pets and all) but it's $850 mo rent and I live on $1,000 S.S.
Bryce I love how supportive you are of multigenerational living. Truly, that's what made societies great, being self sufficient and keeping families together; divided we fall, after all. I'm 56 and my kid's are both organic farmers (27 and 24). We and their significant others are all getting serious about finding land we can farm and each have our own tiny houses on. Seems like a total no brainer! God bless all.

Yes, but I had to laugh when he remarked how "useful" it is having grandparents close by. I believe the elders might prefer a different word to describe their contributions to the community. But we all know Bruce means well.
So true! We don't live in a tiny house but do do multigenerational living. 5 years ago we bought a house together with my parents (so not living as t my parents place, but 50% ownership) that is very suitable for multigenerational living. We love it. It makes everything so much easier. They love being close to our daughter and we hope to help out when they get older
This has to be the future, for there to be a future. 100% believe this. We must unite as families, neighbors, and friends. Having land definitely makes this possible. God bless you
I'm a local Facebook group trawler, I've had 3 gorgeous parking spaces in South Canterbury from local Facebook groups - posting ads with a picture of my house and a write up of me and my needs. I also don't have a towing vehicle capable of moving it, so just before moving day I post another ad for "box of beers and fuel" and voilà!

I think the negativity that you refer to is not towards the concept of multigenerational living, more to a lack of transparency that some people vlogging/blogging about their tiny house life have about the privilege it is to have family with land to park up on. And sure, some people might just be salty about the not having that but can you blame them? We’d all love to have family land but that’s not the reality for many people. I think if privileged people are aware of their privilege, and don’t pretend it is easy for others to get to where they are, people are more receptive. On this channel I’ve only ever seen tiny home owners expressing how lucky they are to be on the spot they are on, so I don’t think you are adding salt to the wound at all. Some great tips in this video - thanks for sharing!
Oh gosh I forgot about the nudist club! But that was probably one of the best ones because of the pool and amenities. Haha.
This video reminded me of the second thing I love about this channel: the beautiful places you visit! Some of these people are living in paradise!

I’m on a friends 10 acre horse property in Victoria Australia and loving my tiny house living with views to the Macedon Ranges. I love helping with the horses and also have my horse here too!

Are you guys parked legally? From what I've heard (in WA at least) is pretty much impossible to legally park a THOW, most councils treat them like a caravan.

Bryce I am from The Caribbean, Barbados and I also believe In multigenerational living and I also think friends should go into to it , it really builds strong community.

I think a lot of the negativity surrounding multi-generational living might be from people who do not have family with lots of spare land and get annoyed by what they perceive as the "privilege" of people living on Mom and Dad's property. It is, of course, a privilege in every sense of the word, and the people I've seen on your channel who do have this privilege seem to be well aware of it. I think you're right that it's not just about being lucky to have land, though, but about being fortunate enough to be near family. When I was young, I couldn't wait to move away from the hokey little town I lived in. Now I live in a city of ten million people halfway around the world, and I see my family maybe once every other year. As my parents get older, I think about that more and more. I would say, take every opportunity you can to be with family, because one day you are going to wish you spent more time with them.

About three years ago my two grandsons bought a house for all of us (my daughter, son, me ;) and them of course. We had lived in a 1425 sq ft 3 bedroom 2 bath apt for 15 years together before this and as the boys grew we were losing space. We have a 4 bedroom, 1 bath house with my shop in the back. Next year we are planning on putting in a second bathroom and the year after I will get my own bath added on. We have a large backyard with a pool. If my kids and grandkids did not include me I would be living in a studio apt (565.00 a mo rent) barely making it. This was a great video and so informative. At one time I considered building one of my own but my shop is just right ;) I love your videos, keep up the good work!
I'd love a video from the other side--where/how to buy land to support a tiny home community or just a tiny home or two, what things are tiny home owners looking for in a parking space, what is the process for making sure that as a land owner you can rent space to tiny homes without getting into legal trouble, etc. Thanks for all the information!
I would LOVE this too. The only problem is that the laws obstructing/promoting tiny living changes from state to state and country to country. Where I live in Australia, most councils have made it technically illegal to park a Tiny House on a rural pocket of land (urban land is almost impossible to use as well). It is very close minded and frustrating of them.
@@duck7237 You really need to push them. Maybe if you could meet with like-minded people in your area, you could get enough influence to help the councils see the advantages of making the needed zoning changes. Ask them to explain why they are the way they are, for starters. Force of habit is not good enough.
@@chezmoi42 I totally agree. I think promoting and supporting tiny living is particularly important now that we are suffering financial hardships. Australia, for the past number of years, has witnessed steady growth in the cost of living but wages have not been following suit. House prices are out of control. Now add a global pandemic and my state of Victoria which is suffering through the longest, strictest lockdown on earth and you have a community ripe for thoughtful, considered, downsized, affordable living. I'm willing to fight for this - but the fact remains that it should be our basic right to begin with. Tiny House communities offer so much more beyond affordable living. It is a very sustainable option. It promotes community engagement in a very disengaged world. I firmly believe that it would have a positive affect on those of us living with anxiety and depression. I honestly can't see a downside to encouraging and promoting tiny villages. My frustration towards my local government is palpable!
@@duck7237 Off topic - I live in the US, & everyone I know feels for the beautiful, friendly, diverse ppl of Australia due to the harsh restrictions of late. I have a friend who got out w/her family, who were originally from Sydney, & had only recently moved to Victoria. Now, they're somewhere in northern Aystralia living normal lives. What we're allowed to see on the news is limited, as is everything, but vids on YT show what's going on. Pls know that millions & millions of Americans are paying attention, & want the best for all of uou down under! With all sincerity, God bless, & take care:)
@@Trish.... thanks for your kind words. It is true that we lived through very harsh lockdown conditions, but actually, as hard as it was I was thankful for many of the safety precautions as we knew they would be shortlived. The strict measures also helped me and another family member going through medical treatments who couldn't afford being exposed to covid (I personally has 2 surgeries constantly postponed due to covid). While we still have to wear masks in stores, life has largely returned to normal. We don't have police or military handing out fines or keeping us prisoners in our houses! We can come and go as we like and are free to function basically as normal. I think the reason other countries think that we're living in hell is due to the vocal few here who refuse to get vaccinated. Basically the majority of Australians believe in your right to vaccinate or not to vaccinate. But those who choose not to vaccinate are no longer allowed to work certain jobs and can be denied access to certain areas which they are unhappy about. This includes those working in medical and aged care. Australia has very strict rules when it comes to working alongside vulnerable people including thorough police checks to ensure sexual deviants aren't working with children etc. Most of us agree with these measures. I have a 102 year old grandmother who would die if an unvaccinated worker passed covid to her. My mother was treated for cancer this year and had a double mastectomy and she could not afford exposure by unvaccinated nurse etc. They're not being banned from all areas or places of employment - just those servicing vulnerable people. The few unvaccinated are arguing they have a right to work wherever they want (Inc hospitals, aged care etc). The vulnerable are saying they have a right to health and life. It's a big blow up over nothing. The majority of Australians believe in our covid measures and over 90% of us have received both doses of the vaccination. A lot of the US news reports are aired over here on mainstream TV and we all watch and shake our heads in disbelief. We're honestly fine and free and healthy and we're quite confused by international reports! One council did shoot some dogs waiting to be rehomed (using covid as the excuse). This was a one off event and caused a national outcry. International reports that councils are going house to house and shooting our pets is pure falsehood (like the majority of the reports!).
I suspect some of the crossed wires and confusion stem from our differing cultures in the US and Australia. At surface level we appear like similar countries and I think we all assume that we have similar beliefs and approaches to life. But actually, our cultures are very different. We subscribe to a more Scandinavian way of thinking here in Oz. We pay high taxes with the understanding that they allow for standard "luxuries" to be available to ALL of our citizens. This includes free healthcare, affordable medicines (astronomically cheaper than US), affordable education, paid maternity leave, a minimum "livable" wage (one of the highest in the world) etc. It is also compulsory for all adults over 18 to vote. This means that every voice is heard and the onus is on the government to provide the ability to cast a vote to people living in the most remote corners of Australia.
I'm not saying one is better or worse than than other. But we are different. Very different. I guess these rules and obligations work for us because our overall attitude tends to be "no man left behind" rather than every man for themselves.
Anyway, I promise we are all doing fine. Life is happy and peaceful and returning to normal. I hope that you are doing well in your part of the world (and thank you for caring!).

We were lucky to find a tiny home community here in Nathrop Colorado! At Chateau Chaparral you can own your tiny home lot and live year-round. We adore this community and it just happens to be in one of the most beautiful places in the Rockies!
Tiny home living has allowed us to be debt free. Now we work less and spend more time enjoying the outdoors and the community. It took us about five years to figure out how to do it and we’re so glad we did! We love your channel Bryce and find all the people and their homes inspiring! Living small is truly living large! I hope one day you’ll come and visit our village here above the Arkansas river headwaters. It’s absolutely a slice of heaven.

Shame they changed it after the fact
After many years working retail I decided that I had enough and got a bachelor's degree in hope of a better life. The consequence was that I was able to change industries but my salary is similar to my retail days and now I'm tens of thousands of dollars in college related debt. The debt is crippling and has forced me to live with relatives while I do my best to pay off debt. The time is nearing when I need to find my own place to live but the cost of residential real estate is so astronomical compared to a typical salary that I'm seriously considering living in a tiny home for a couple of years while I save up for a regular home. I don't know how that would work but this channel is very educational. I applaud people who go against the grain and get themselves a tiny home while they get their financial situation in order.
I've been a fan of your videos for a couple years. besides helping people with their tiny house journeys this has helped me with my mental health so much over this past year! keep making videos i love them
Hey Bryce, an adjacent question that might be a decent video topic for you. How about one on "where to construct a tiny house?" This might be a project someone can only dedicate time to sporadically, and you don't want the elements destroying it or causing problems before you get things like sheathing or insulation in. You might be holding off on buying or renting land to park it until once it's complete for financial reasons. You may not be able to build it in your backyard because you don't have the room, and most storage facilities are a poor choice because they don't want you loitering there for hours and plugging into their power supply (if your unit even has an outlet), or running generators in there. There's probably a lot more considerations, but I for one am definitely in the situation where I can't afford to buy all the materials at once, and I can't buy them piece-by-piece either because I have nowhere to store them, and nowhere to build it.

Brilliant video and lovely to revisit some old faces... I want to build a Vardo to see if I can and for holidays and also very interested in having a THIMBY as I lived in granny flats to afford my own home and suddenly find myself able to be the landlady not the tenant.
It will be my way to give the next generation a leg up in life and create community for me too.

It's a shame cities don't want these homes on their city land, since they cannot tax it like a mc-mansion
They can charge for the space they take up, so its win-win.
But its not tax, so they don't understand it.
You still pay property taxes if your tiny house is on land. So essentially you're paying taxes..
Multi-generational and intentional communities yes!!! We need to de-normalize people having these huge single family houses in dense urban environments.
Not happening. The local governments generate lots of tax revenue through those huge single family homes.

Yes! More videos like this please. The interviews are nice, but there is so much more content and information you could be sharing. Videos about utilities, equipment, travel tips, construction, budget, etc. This was great!

I am hoping to procure some land on the outskirts of Melbourne for the purpose of starting a Tiny House village business (ie renting out parking spaces). I'm just worried that there won't be enough people in Melbourne needing a parking space to make this a functional business idea.

Thanks so much, Bryce. This is very informative. I had mentioned in one of your other videos that my husband and I retire in a few years and love the idea of tiny home living. I never hear much in the UK aside from a very few parked on family lands. Hopefully in the next few years, the movement will have progressed. The councils are very strict here. With UK housing prices and shortages, tiny living is so ideal for many! Personally, I do not want to care for our four-bed - three-bath home until we're too old to enjoy work-free freedoms.
It's my dream to live tiny! I can't understand why Massachusetts is so hesitant to make it legal (outside of family ADUs). It could solve so many of our social problems here and affordable housing is a huge one!

Such a great idea for a video, and you guys did such an amazing job of presenting so many different options for how to go about finding a spot to park a tiny home. So helpful and motivating to see something like this. And your support of multigenerational living was something important to spend a moment on, I feel like the only negative comments I ever see posted on some of the videos for this channel are when the people featured are lucky enough to park on family land. I can understand where the negativity comes from though, as when I see people featured parked up on an amazing piece of family land I get super jealous as that isn't something that will ever be an option for me. But also I think how cool it is for these people to have that opportunity and I am really happy for them because of all of the advantages and closeness with family that affords them. Anyways thanks for sharing another well done and inspiring video, looking forward to joining the tiny house movement one day and these videos always get me excited about that.
Yes! I feel like people are sometimes snarky to those who live with their families, instead of acting empathetic to people who live in such an unconventional (at least for the USA) way.
Great video! I believe I had seen all of the individual home videos featured in this compilation but it was helpful to focus on 1 subject in order to compare and contrast information.
I totally agree re the idea of multigenerational living. I recently sold my home in Adelaide and moved to the beautiful Cairns & share land & a home with my brother & sister in law & had a tiny home with my nephew on the land 👌😍

Nice! I’m always hoping for more informative content like this. The whole process is pretty intimidating to me. I thought that saving money was the hard part and now that I’m nearly to my goal I’ve discovered a whole list of other reasons to be stressed out. But as they say, nothing worthwhile is easy.

Why are all these tiny houses always mobile homes and not actual houses? In the Netherlands and Japan there are sooooo many homes that are smaller than many of the tiny houses featured here. In the Netherlands its possible to find houses as small as 15m2! Free standing brick house with plumbing, electric, sewage. 30m2 isn't hard to find at all! I would love to see more examples of people that are living in tiny fixed location homes that are making great use of the space.
Because in the USA our local governments/municipalities generate tax revenue through real estate and they haven't worked out how to tax these tiny homes. Some of it is also cultural and they are looked down upon because a "normal" American live in a big house.
@@MrSupernova111 the videos are world wide and not just in the US. He us based in New Zealand so the laws and taxes there are different. In the US there definitely are small houses like shotgun houses or guest houses that are alot smaller then the 'normal' American house.
Small 'houses' have featured on this channel; recalling a couple from Japan... but there have been others
