  • First off, I consider DOOM (2016) to be one of the best games of all time and easily one of the best shooters of all time. I had some high expectations for DOOM VFR but I tried my hardest to keep them in check, and whether I did or didn't, I think DOOM VFR lived up to them. Once the smooth-locomotion got added, it became fantastic. At this point, my only two flaws with the game are the length, I would have loved one or two more hours, and the glory kills. In DOOM (2016) they are fully animated in such glory, pun intended, but in VFR you just telefrag into enemies and there's no glories melee finisher. Yes, canned animations are something of a no-no for VR, but it would have been awesome if they thought up some way to handle it. Like when an enemy goes into the flickering state to be telefraged/glory killed, we could actually grab onto parts of them and rip them apart, like in GORN. Despite that, a fantastic VR shooter with some super satisfying combat.

    So three things.
    1. Loved this video. I hate Doom but after this video I am going to get it.
    2. You can turn on a centre square if you have advanced settings Open VR software which I think you do. Go to Chaperone and it will give you a centre square with an arrow, You will always know where you are in your room just by looking at your feet.
    3. If your going to have movement being this high its almost impossible to see what is in your environment in any detail. Its just moving too fast. That is my only grip with this style of review. Just a little too fast.

Oh yeah, the speed is a massive aspect of DOOM VFR and DOOM in general. The translation of VR games being recorded to a flat 2D video on RUclips is definitely a rough one. A lot of visual space isn't recorded since a 2D video showing everything would have a serious fish-eye effect that looks bad. So when you mix that with the speed that VFR is played at (when not using the teleport locomotion) I can see how it's tough to figure out what's going on around the player.
