Autoimmune Disease, The Vagus Nerve & Recovery. (The Irish ME Trust Talk)

  • The following video is a live talk I gave to the Irish ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis) Trust. The focus is on autoimmune and the Vagus Nerve.
If you are struggling mentally or physically and would like better to understand the holistic capacity of the Vagus Nerve to help assist your body to heal, please grab a tea and join me for thirty minutes.
Declan Carroll, head of the Trust, stated, "Justin is a very engaging speaker and exudes great warmth in his delivery. His candid account of his journey through life with its highs and lows, would prove an inspiration to many who feel that the valleys are too low to escape from. His decision to leave the high octane pressure of business life in order to explore therapeutic avenues to help people will steady the mind for a lot of people. We wish Justin every success in his future endeavours and wish those he will help along the way a speedy exit from their troubles."
As someone who recovered from the severe trauma of losing my son, I know the importance of finding some ease within the body. I witnessed Joshua's last breaths, and this image aroused PTSD and severe anxiety and depression. Accessing the Vagus Nerve and Polyvagal Theory were critical in my recovery. It allowed me to find a little ease whilst in tandem, I built a meditation practice and sought therapy.
Recovery from whatever loss or stress you have suffered is possible. It does require a desire to do the work and a commitment to show up. Remember to seek help, speak to friends and find a therapist or coach that is right for you. Hope & Love, Justin.

Thank You Justin for sharing your story. My beautiful native American grandmother said to me once - "some people are left alone in the wilderness so they can become a path to others". You have become a a small beacon to others like me. I can totally relate to everything you have said. I still have a long way to go but you have given me the motivation and inspiration that there is hope at the end of this dark and scary tunnel. God bless you immensely

Thank you Justin for sharing your story. You found strength despite adversity...May your precious Joshua rest in peace 🙏💙. It was both heartwarming and very encouraging to hear that many of your symptoms have cleared. After years of suffering, I am now positive that I am on my road to recovery. I am off all medication other than for my thyroid & listening to my body (I have spent decades rushing, pushing through, stuffing down emotion from losses, trying to be strong for everyone else, putting my needs on a back burner etc)...the result...gut issues, ibs, leaky gut, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, hashimotos thyroiditis, occipital neuralgia, uveitis.Despite the insistence from my GP that I will never get better and will have to learn to live with My conditions.. I trust my body...I believe I will heal...I believe that my vegus nerve is key to my recovery. I am so very grateful for your videos and will be watching them all. 🙏 Namaste 🙏 ♥️

FYI Vagus nerve can definitely be affected by damage to C-1 and C-2 ,atlas and axis also trauma to sternum.. I have been trying to find a Dr who will even discuss or recognize that vagus never exists !! I began my research 4yrs ago… what a journey. It’s amazing the vast areas in the vagus nerve controls and affects in our bodies. I agree that breathe is an effective way for vagus release but I’m still searching for something more permanent. Prolotherapy is my next venture.. I’ll keep you posted. Thanks for your journey share. Jamiebabb

Hi Jamie, Prolo should be a last resort. Have you had a physical trauma to C-1 and C-2? Getting close to and healing earlier psychological traumas can really shift and heal vagal tone. If I can’t help let me know. Prolo should be after all else has failed. Regards, Justin.

Life long searcher here too, the Vagus nerve is everything 🙏
I fell into another timeline and saw an acupressure point which I haven't been able to find info on again strangely enough but boy oh boy buckle up!
If you stick your finger in you ear and press against the wall you will find a spot that hurts like hell!!!
Release resistance and breathe into it bravely and surrender when breathing out.. I would also suggest 'EFT tapping' the higher heart at same time (I did not but this would assist the process as you cannot be in a state of trauma and a state of healing at the same time). I went pretty hardcore and in three weeks it bought out physical toxins.
The immune system goes dormant and this helps to integrate the point of attraction.. physically! Phenomenal.

    • @jamiebabb4471

Thanks for sharing your info.. I’ll have to look into the EFT?tapping.. Sure makes too much sense about connection to immune system And your so right the vagus nerve IS everything !!! It’s time people realize this because Dr’s sure aren’t gonna inform anyone!

What a brilliant story particularly the human bits. My take away is also how the workforce has changed since the 1980s and doesn’t allow anyone to enjoy a drink or relax or have weekends were off times so while things like the death of a child or child hood issues are real, the insane workforce of the digital age is the straw that breaks

This is very inspiring. I think you did a fantastic job summarizing your story and what you have learned - in under 40 minutes. Most importantly, what you say here is so true. I am also a therapist, and I work primarily with people who suffer with chronic illness, due to histories of unresolved trauma (which, as you said so well, is actually the trauma living as present-tense in the body). The irony for me, is that I chose to be a therapist right after graduating from high school at age 18 . . . and yet, it has taken almost 25 years of suffering chronic illness - including seven years of a very unhealthy marriage, the birth and raising of three children (all adults now), more than two decades of working and volunteering in the mental health field, and eventually facing two significant losses in the past six years - for me to finally be addressing the stored grief in my body. After the most significant loss I experienced, at the end of 2014 (also involving a child), I did well to manage my grief . . . at first. But then I jumped back into work and completing my final counseling licensure requirements too quickly - all while being the single parent of three teenagers. This led to losing way too much sleep, and I nearly died from taking stimulants to focus and stay awake. My immune system was already shot when I was exposed to Lyme disease in 2017, so it is no surprise that I was diagnosed with an autoimmune skin disease as well (which has really been a whole body stress disease, with layers of trauma, Lyme, and other microorganisms being very opportunistic components of it). Needless to say, I would have remained in avoidance mode - which was really just constant PTSD mode - forever, had I not become so sick that it almost killed me. I am not healed at this point, and I am still attempting to actually do the hard work of believing I am worth the change and trusting that the steady growth will actually lead to peace and well-being. I still struggle with trusting my inner wisdom. I still too often attempt to avoid pain. But I also need to remember that I have done a lot of the hard work. The toughest work for me might actually be the letting go part of it, but learning about the vagus nerve in recent months has been a very helpful piece of the puzzle. In fact, my recent searches for videos on this topic are what led me to your videos. Thank you for being willing to share your story and accompanying information that is actually helpful (and not just extra intellectual weight to add to to my avoidance behavior)!

Thank you so much Mary Anne. All that you have written here is part of your own healing. Knowing the story is one thing, but starting to speak it is a whole different thing. I am constantly meet therapists who who trained in order to try and cognitively understand their own mind. However, as you have learned, the pain is in the body.
Running from the pain is possible (initially) but it is also exhausting. The body wants you to sit down and be with the pain. Forgive those who have wronged you, and most importantly forgive yourself. It is not an acceptance of their wrongdoing, but rather a letting go and a reclaiming of your own personal sovereignty.
I can sense your deep strength and desire to heal. They are the two most important tools you need. Keep going. If I can be of assistance on your journey drop me an email. 🙏🙂👏❤️

I related to a lot of your story, especially about the miscarriage/loss of a child, that to me was the thing that drove me over the edge, I thought I was coping, doing the macho male thing of trying to push through, but ended up one day going to A&E feeling not very well with headaches etc. I ended up in hospital with BP over 200, and a whisker away from having either stroke or heart attack. Needless to say the docs couldn't really figure out the key thing that was causing it, had lung and heart scans, all ok.
Deep done I knew the issue, but now it was coming out of the woodwork. That was at the start of lockdown, and I though the BP drugs and beta blockers I was on would just tide me over. But since then up till now I have struggled to lose weight so I could ultimately reduce/stop the BP meds but BP goes up again as soon as I stop the meds.
Similar to yourself, I start getting all these different problems like my ankles swell up (BP Meds I think), non-existant libido, anxiety/anger/trouble concentrating, gout flare up for about 2/3 weeks, little twinges and aches coming and going. I felt, and still do in a way feel like my health is going downhill.
I then found some exercises on the vagus nerve and I started feeling a bit better, but I felt I needed more, so I'm looking at your stuff as well. Just wanted to say as well thanks for sharing that story, made me feel it's not just me that was going through these things.

Thanks, Jamie. Check out the other videos on my channel too. You may like to try this visualisation technique for the vagal tone. We can only manage our responses. We have no influence on another person's actions. By slowing down and paying attention to our nervous system, we can better manage our reactions. This exercise for 4-6 weeks, followed by building a daily meditation practice for 15 minutes, will provide relief and a capacity to take a breath before being triggered. Your situation is complex, and I am sending you my thoughts and prayers. 🙏 There are guided meditations on my channel.

Thank you for explaining what you have been through in your life! I too had a very stressful childhood and adulthood......have been chronically ill my whole adult life. Long very sad story! I'm 65 and am just now coming to understand what is happening to my body.
Therapy back in the 70s through the 90s actually hurt me because there was so little understanding of how the mind and body work together.
Do you have any understanding of EMDR? I'm considering that type of therapy to heal the trauma issues and wondered what you think of it?
My body is attacking itself for 10 years now giving me large brain lesions that cause very painful twisting spasms in my head and chest. So clearly I need to up my game at this point and your words give me hope.

Triginemius is the worst pain, there is pain that shocks the body and everything gets out of control. So 3 years ago I was on my first course on the vagus nerve and I learned exercises for and cooling down the system. But now after hearing your story, it gives me a little hope. For a week I have been doing the exercise you showed in a video, holding my breath out and squeezing my palms together. Do not feel I can do more than three every day yet. But my left hand starts to work and I sleep deeper and better. I start hoping that vagus nerve exercises can help me reverse and get rid of the pain. But the balance nerve is probably broken…? Also, I almost dare not hope that vagus nerve exercises can free me from the triginimeus hell, do you know anything about that? Your best regards from Norway 🌷

What advice can you give me, please, Justin? Is there anything I can take to help my vagus nerve? I'm so sory for your loss.

Do you think mechanical compression of the vagus nerve could cause autoimmune issues to develop ?

It is important to start slow and build from there. Your mental health is key as that increases the stress on the body. I hope you could watch the full that I gave to the ME Trust? I walked through my own journey and how I recovered. JC

Hello Justin I too suffer from leaky gut ,IBS, aniexty and skin breakouts I had skin allergies too in past .My mast cells get activated causing leaky gut which is connected to enteric nerves Recently I started to stimulate vagus nerve through hand pressing and belly breathing. Initially it helped with IBS later on all my symptoms got very worse. Does this indicate I've got very sensitive nerves ?

Stimulation of the vagus nerve alone is not always going to produce results. It is often being triggered by a past trauma which needs work. You should be working with a therapist in respect to your mental health while considering stimulating the vagal response. If you have been chronically stressed, anxious or depressed, then additional support will likely be needed. Seek advices from your medical professional.

@@JustinCaffrey Not that easy living in a country where you aren’t given any psychological help/treatment and doesn’t even have therapists who admit there is something called Complex PTSD or have methods to treat it. I can’t afford therapy. My disability payment covers exactly a one room apartment and food, nothing more (church has at times helped me so I have clothes).
I am severely ill since 15 years, severe ME, POTS, mast cell activation syndrome, hypermobile, EDS, mal Chiari which they don’t operate on in my country, chranial instability, intracranial pressure, severe body aches/fight flight deep cramping, knots and adhesions everywhere along my neck, shoulder blades and back, hormonal imbalances, no physical or mental stamina, adhd like symptoms, and everything that comes with ME/CFS including total mental and cognitive malfunction.
Never had the time or chance to finish education, work or meet love. Alone, no place in society, mostly isolated, bedridden and ill with no money or support. How could I ever get help without money or ability to get better. I spent all my limited time (spoons/spoon theory) and energy on trying to take care and heal through RUclips meditations, RUclips qigong, Wim hof cold showers (done them for two years without effect or making me worse), positive thinking, visualisations, slow deep squats, btrewthjng teqniqurs, vagus stimulation teqniques, diet without toxins, sugars, gluten, electrolyte balancing water with salt, potassium and magnesium for POTS help, gratitude practices, trying to get outside when I can. Etc, etc, etc the list goes on.
So how could I possibly get my life and health sorted out by nonexistent trauma therapy at age 38 without friends, family, ability to do much more than the most crucial every day and without any money?

PS I don’t drink and I don’t smoke and I don’t flee from my feelings, I feel them I live in a body who absorbs everything even though I try letting go, accepting, embracing, being ok that I’m struggling, trying to self love ... but I’m ready to call it quits because I’m too lonely and without an end to this.

@@TL-ch1xd it's the cyclic thing that keeps running in background, your nervous system keeps triggering same actions and emotions . So you have to become conscious and become aware of your actions and thoughts so you can change and break the cycle . Each time you do same things and feel the same way you are feeling now your nervous system goes to sympathetic state !!!!!

You have CPTSD and your response to your son's Joshua's death was nit the manly way to handle stress, it is how those with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder respond, well it is one of the ways. You were dissociated and distracted yourself.
I just wanted to add this to your comments just in case it helps.
