It’s kind of neat to see how a cellist of his caliber practice. It doesn’t make me feel alone or frustrated knowing that everyone works on more or less the same things when practicing. Very insightful!
A very inspiring video. Your face and your attitude communicate concentration and respect for what you are going to do before you start. Your comments during the video are very inspiring too. Thanks a lot.
I love this video! I have always wanted to see how professional musicians practice and now i get the chance. I can’t wait to watch the other episodes! ♩♪♫♬♭♮♯
Ice literally searched and searched for videos of world class cellists just practicing to see how they work! Its a miracle that my favorite cellists of them all has done exactly that! Thank you so much 🙏🙏
All these master level minutia details I can totally slow down and feel into mastering my skills and the sound of my little grade 2-5 level sheet music!! This encourages me ❤
i really like this open practice, it helps me to think again what am i doing in the practice. thanks for video it's really a treasure to observe your brain and mind while you are working on.
Your bow is all over the space between the bridge and fingerboard - even up over it. Can you create (or did I miss) a tutorial on that choice and the different sounds and feelings gained by each area?
That's an interesting take. I felt that the technique and interpretation were quite well fused together in this vid. I know what you mean, but didn't you see a lot of technical processes in his practicing as well?
Rafael Hoekman I recall almost all of his comments to be about interpretation (phrasing, dynamics, etc.). Occasionally he mentioned intonation, but then didn’t explain what he was going to do technically to correct the intonation. Certainly interpretation is important, but I’m guessing that many RUclips viewers are at a level where they’re still struggling mostly with finding a good tone, choosing fingerings, shifting, bowing technique, etc. It would be great to hear his comments on those issues while he practices.
@@Lwayte I see what you mean. Pablo plays at an incredibly high level. I guess I am able to see more "technique" in his practicing than others perhaps. Have you watched his other vids. He makes some good observations about tone production, intonation, shifting, hand positions, finger action, vibrato etc. Maybe an even better vid would be to show him learning a piece for the first time. Your idea is interesting though. Maybe I'll make a vid that you would like better. I certainly have more basic problems to fix than Pablo does lol!
Thank you for sharing with us and providing a window into what is typically a performer's very private process. I especially liked your different uses of vibrato: rate and and width of oscillation. Scientists tell us that the human brain ceases to notice that which does not change. This is true for a note without vibrato as well as a note with the same vibrato. Too often the "traditional" notion that vibrato must be applied to every single note is a false premise leading directly to mechanical, uninspiring performance.
Thank you for uploading! It is very interesting how you most likely focus on colours and it's changes. But I guess that's more or less the last stadium of practicing as you know the peace and have solved all intonational and technical problems. Also, It would be very interesting to see how you learn a complete new peace or how you solve technical problems. Keep it up! :)
The little comments describing what you are doing helps me understand and appreciate how and why you are playing the cello a certain way so much more. It seems you also have the makings of a great mentor. I hope to learn to play the cello one day. Until then I'll just have to experience that vicariously :)
Wow, this was very insightful, I got more from the text on the screen than anything else.... like I could read your mind... great. Maybe a voice over might work as well next time...got to go practice....
Hello my name is Marco and i am 12 years old and i am a big fan of Pablo Ferrández. I am a cellist and i love your vidéos ! I hope some day to play for you !
Hola Pablo!! Con qué grabas tus vídeos para que tengan un sonido tan bueno? Me gustaría saberlo para poder grabar mi cello con esa calidad de imagen y sonido. Gracias ❤️
Smart practicing👍 You are incredible... I never know how to study. I have to think about intonation, colours, dynamics, sound at the same time? You think about all in the concert?Or it has to be more natural?
I have one question: You practiced extremely efficient and good in this video. Are you always able to practice that efficient? Thanks a lot for uploading!
To me the very premise of this video is that terms like "efficiency" is not a very useful metric. A musical passage could be considered efficient if it is rhythmically accurate; in tune; dynamics observed; phrase structure/shape logical. But within those very parameters Pablo shows us the many variables to bring out his feeling about this composition, feelings which he is actually exploring musically before our ears and eyes. Further, the notion that technical expertise (which is what I think you are asking about) must precede musicality is not always true. Often having a clear sonic image of a phrase shape dictates precisely the technique needed.
I wish I would be able to analyse and fix everything so quickly. Always takes me much too long ... Do you always have such a beautiful place to practice? :D
great thoughtsprocess... also, beautiful music! What is that? I had no idea Rachmaninov wrote anything for a differet instrument than piano😅(not counting chamber music ofc😅) whats the name of the piece please?
Pablo, in your video about increasing sound quality you said, put thumb on frog's arch, but here looks like you replace it to corner (as classic position), am I right?
Do you u usually practice without the music? Even for pieces you know already? And Is this practice session where the piece is almost ready for performance?
Very interresting. Impressed to see a cellist show is practice without modesty. Plus, you need to go back to what you have done to explain what you focusing at the moment. Thank you for this experiment.
I hope you this video gives you some insight of my work and maybe some ideas to incorporate to your practice! Thanks for watching!
Thanks a lot!! Very insightful
I’m enjoying all your videos and artistry. I’d love to see you in the process of figuring out fingerings and bowings
This video is perfect for where I'm at. The thought bubbles made the video, the tone production and body language was great just to absorb.
Fantastic idea for a new series. Well done! Quick question: do you drink coffee or tea in the morning? Or something else?
Guys, let's not forget that videos by Pablo are like professional musician masterclasses, and we are basically getting it for free! :)) Thank you!

Gracias Pablo!

Thank you!! very interesting and useful to see how a Master study!
Great idea! I’d love to see more of this, particularly focusing on technique rather than interpretation.

Very insightful, love this series you are doing , please keep doing it :) and I was wondering what mic you use, because that sound is so clear
This video was just recorded with the cameras mic! Sony A6600 :)

Impressive you can do all that without the score. Do you have a routine for memorization?
thank youuu

Hola Pablo! Siempre me he hecho una pregunta... Sigues haciendo estudios de técnica? Popper, Piatti, Buquinik, Servais, etc?
Hola Pablo, puede acer un video como acer una buena messa in voce con el cello?
Pablo, in your video about increasing sound quality you said, put thumb on frog's arch, but here looks like you replace it to corner (as classic position), am I right?
Nop! Same hold as in that video! :)
