I found this at the perfect time! I’m working on the Elgar concerto and my current focus is cleaning up my shifts to make the melody line clear and lyrical. My goal is to keep the romantic style without any “swoops” due to poor shifting. Thank you as always Pablo!! Xxx

My shifting technique is mostly just yeeting through mid-air and landing on 1 finger sometimes lol
And the last tip about not shifting onto the same finger is helpful!!

have you noticed, at 11:58 he was shifting C to F and the obertones of C kept ringing. wow thats literally playing two notes on one string :D

I’m a bass player and I did learn the basic shifting named :”alla Heifez” ( old finger on the old bow) - and “Alla Kreisler “. (New finger on the new bow). There is some combination of this two : old finger - new bow , new finger -old bow. Also, start with old finger and in the middle continue with the new finger - on old bow , eventually on the new bow and so on. So, there is a truly art of shifting! String player should care more about.

This video was super helpful for me 👍👍👌👌 (especially Elmerson's tip of shifting with one finger and landing with another finger). This is a tip my teacher taught me: when I need to do the mixed shift (third method) I learn the shift of the sliding finger and the I land the wanted finger more accurately...😅

Thank you for your insight. Muscle memory is more difficult on strings due to the different finger distances in different positions. It means many hours practice in first position, then second .... etc. Then it might be possible to shift so accurately into higher positions. Your methods are very helpful.

Yo apenas comienzo, y me había dado cuenta de ello, de hecho la cabeza se me embrolla al asomarme tanto al diapasón como al trabajo de mano izquierda y, efectivamente las combinaciones son muchísimas, por lo cual, como trabajo esencial las manos, especialmente la izquierda debe de fortalecerse físicamente, para estar preparada para cualquier cambio que se presente.

Hi Pablo, great video! In Han Jensen's book Cellomind shifts are explained even further. The first shift you describe is called smiley face (: under the fingerboard you call it. He calls the other type rainbow arch. An up and down motion. He also advocates combining the two for very large shifts. He also points out the different combos of fingers, bow changes, etc. It's very helpful. Interestingly, I had heard from Starker that it's always better to shift from a higher finger to a lower one or use the same finger. I think it's to do with having balance in the hand. I think your explanation is great. Consecutive fingers! Interesting to avoid the same finger. I will try your ideas. Thanks so much! I hold the bow the way you do now, and will never change back! Also, that Shostakovich fingering from your talking cello video with Kian is amazing! An idea for a video would be tips for difficult bow strokes. Different off the string strokes? Bravo to you!

A shifting technique not mentioned is finger replacement. So, same note different finger. I use this to prepare for more favorable incoming fingerings.

As someone with long arms, I find that you have to move your elbow when you shift, not moving my elbow just feels so uncomfortable. Maybe it is a good option for short limb players but not for myself

Talk about the intonation of different scales
It would be helpful to also demonstrate descending in addition to ascending shifts. Opening the elbow ascending is a different feeling than closing the elbow when descending.
