I've had self deletion thoughts for 59 years.
At 18, I realized they were ONLY thoughts.
My biggest concern was the risk of becoming consumed with self-destructive thoughts.
My solution was to commit to a specific plan that was so elaborate that the urge would pass before the plan could be executed.
For the record, my plans never included pews pews.

For a lot of people with chronic depression, I'd image simply thinking "Well, I should at least clean up my home first so the EMTs don't judge the way I lived" would either result in feeling a lot better or wanting to put it off until later. 😅
I'm glad you haven't made the decision to quit.

@mtnbkr5478 you are correct about having depression and the improvement of mental health by cleaning up.
Curiously, gripping my pistol in the holster has a calming effect. Without moving it to another position.
This discussion has inspired me to invest in the MantisX dry fire system. I had one years ago that got lost when I moved.

I've had thoughts for years. Having work alongside mental health counselors, one thing they always ask is, "do you have a plan?" Nope, I don't and that's how I know it's just random thoughts. Another though I have is the finality if I do go through with it. Maybe tomorrow is the day my whole life comes together and I'm going to miss that. What else will I miss?? Right now I'm in my early 50s. My dad is still alive and almost 80 and my grandfather was about 85 when he died. I'm going to miss out on at least 30 years if I stop things now. I'm not ready to give up on what those 30+ years might hold just because things are tough right now. Bad thoughts come, but we have to recognize that they are just bad thoughts and we have power over those thoughts, to push them away and not make them a reality.

He raised an excellent point against the red flag laws. How many gun owners seeked help in a roundabout way that wouldn't have the red flag laws used against them just because they needed a little push forward? And how many gun owners didn't do that? How many of them are afraid of going to the therapist, hitting up a hotline or telling a trusted friend or family member what's bothering them under the fear of their guns being taken away? How many people in need didn't ask for help just because they're gun owners?
My country has red flag laws (aside from a whole lot of bovine excrement) and if you seek help cops are required to take your guns away. One of the conditions for "owning" a gun is a health checkup, which includes mental health. As soon as any of the necessary conditions for "owning" a gun are broken, including if you seek help with mental health, you are no longer elegible for firearm "ownership" and the cops knock on your door

They have studies showing that if someone has "self deletion" ideation, asking them very specific questions, using the actual "S" word has no negative affects. Quite the opposite, putting words to the thoughts in such a concrete way can be very helpful. Not only in just "getting it off their chest," but words have power and saying it out loud makes it more real. The fact that the "S" word is censored on this platform makes me think they do not really want things to get better.

The problem is that "health professionals" can make the decision when they have zero knowledge on how a firearm works, the amount of background checks you have to go through (same as police, FBI, and the military). Yet even after passing all these background checks someone with no knowledge of this can red flag you and infringe on your rights. Yet purchasing g 26 firearms including military grade weapons LEGALLY must determine I am responsible and have actual knowledge yet the person with no experience makes that decision LOL. That's like me being an unlicensed doctor writing prescriptions for an actual pharmacist.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and I own guns. I absolutely believe it is tragic that anyone believes, attempts, and or succeeds in self deletion. The factors that contribute to the creation of an associated disorder can be addressed and interventions can be applied to mitigate the symptoms. I believe an issue that it seems hardly anyone wants to address is murder and what contributes to that. Like the beliefs that tell us all that it is ok to take a life. War, revenge, abortion, pulling the plug on a relative with stage 4 cancer. Because murder is ok and reinforced from the top of government down we murder. The conversation needs to focus on creating a climate where all know that human life is more important than my conflicts with other human lives. We all need to learn what LOVE really is and how to truly show the acts that would come from a complete understanding of Agape.

However, people that game with my oldest are often surprised that he's such a gun geek, LOL. I'm not a "gun nerd" although I do own them, but I find it fascinating when we're all together, listening to the two of them discuss the pros and cons of different firearms. I agree wholeheartedly. This is a very personal subject with me because I am not legally able to purchase a firearm because of so-called "mental health issues" years ago. Yet, even at my worst point in life, I never would have dreamed of hurting anyone; and my dad had 2 rifles in the house when we were growing up; and I knew how to use both.
It's pathetic. I've had a driver's license for almost 15 years. You can do so much damage with a vehicle. Yet, I can't legally own a gun? Pffftt! It's so unconstitutional! Sure, I COULD maybe get what's called a "certificate of relief from disabilities" and purchase a gun (not a guarantee, though). But, why is it easier for someone get their license back after a DUI, than it is for me to MAYBE get my gun rights back? Again, it's pathetic!
If someone is truly a danger to themselves or others, they should probably have a guardian of some sorts; which would be THEIR responsibility.

And most of those people have ADD or ADHD never done no serious criminal acts. Someone told me lots or maybe half the kids in sports has a form of ADD or ADHD. But idk what percentage of that is. When it comes to guns and mental health you cannot separate them when you consider the fact that many firearm related deaths are linked to suicide/self inflicted harm.

Mental health is a thing that's constantly changing, one day you'll feel mentally fine and the day after that you probably won't. The idea the anti-gunners propose about "Minority Reporting" and there being a mental health test before you get a gun is silly.

    Ok... maybe I'm blowing smoke...
But after a motorcycle accident and subsequent 6.5 week coma resulting in total amnesia in a 22 year old punk band vocalist who screams about government corruption in 1984, near death in 1985...
I see, very clearly, that mental difficulties are the common thread in the murder environment or attempted assassination.

Words change meaning over time. Somehow the ardent pacifists in PA accepted the 2nd amendment and so did the communities that required each adult to own arms. They each read the term "the people" and knew it meant themselves, their people. At the time, a people was created by social contract (no formal government required) from persons sharing a jurisdiction.
Conflicts between persons is inevitable. We can never find peace between metro areas and rural until the people of each jurisdiction have the right to govern themselves just like the Constitution intended.
The rights of the people must not be infringed by the federal government even in the form of the Supreme Court.
Scalia was wrong in 2008. As a nation we are doomed until clear thinking conservatives correct his mistake. The right to bear arms belongs to each community not each individual.

Commend you for having ghe conversation, but i WHOLLY disagree.
You could remove every firearm in our country, and the suicide rate wouldnt change measurably.
We need to stop conflating. Gun ownership and "self deletion" are not correlated. The rate of successful deletion may change, but this doesnt target the issue.
    Sorry, your guest is confused.

Actually you aren’t listening. Nobody said what you are implying. Even in states where suicide by firearm goes down….overall suicide is up. This show was about what we do to bring down suicide by firearm….not suicide as a whole.

    • @dansiegel1874
      @dansiegel1874 8 дней назад +2

@michaelsodini9041 I'm doing a poor job articulating what I intend to say.
Perhaps I question whether or not the conversation even needs to be had. The only way to bring suicide by firearm down is to have less firearms. That's not an option in a free America. Whether or not someone wishes to end their life is completely independent from the means in which they take their life.
I guess it's more of a philosophical conversation to be had. We can have a conversation about mental health and suicide, but firearms are just a means of commiting suicide. The GUN has zero to do with it.
I realize I still am not doing a great job articulating the point. I just don't believe including firearms in the conversation is useful in any capacity.

@@dansiegel1874all good. I disagree with you about the only way to have less suicides by firearm is less guns….I think the answer is providing more resources where gun owners can get help without fear of rights restriction.

You guys are correct going after a solution for the 60% because the criminal element can be addressed by stronger consequences for armed crimes (let’s say using a weapon in the commission of a crime can automatically equate to attempted murder and use the maximum sentence….you see where I’m going)

    • @Coconut-219
      @Coconut-219 8 дней назад

Reports being discarded by the police, or state prosecutors dropping it, or "catch and release" - Getting rid of those issues would drastically reduce criminality more than 'harsher sentencing'.
Also a legal precedent like that I don't think can coexist with "self defense" law, you've seen how nonsensical the system already is at prosecuting victims of crime.

I don't fully buy that it's a mental health problem. And the reason for that is because America is a brutal country to live in if your life takes a turn for the worse. If you lose your job, get sick etc, you and your family will end up on the streets.. I think in order to fix the "gun" problem you guys need to change your entire system and make sure that people have access to health care, a safety net in case you lose your job and can't pay for bills and food.
The mental health problem is just a symptom of your problems as a society, and i believe it will only grow worse and worse.
