Hello Devlin. After reading your blog on this topic I got an amazing laptop. It's Lenovo Legion 5pro. Fantastic spec - i7, 16gb ram, graphic card dedicated at 6gb and 1tb SSD. Screen is 15.6".
Thanks Devlin for another outstanding video, just shared it on LinkedIn! I have a gaming laptop that I highly recommend, a ROG Strix--doesn't come with a webcam but you can get an external... it has AMD Ryzen 7 Processor with Radeon Graphics and 16GB RAM... the keyboard lights up and "breathes"... it's a beautiful machine.
I agree with gaming laptop approach and my ROG has been awesome so far. $1200 with dedicated graphics card. ASUS - ROG Zephyrus 14" Gaming Laptop - AMD Ryzen 9 - 16GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 - 1TB SSD
About 5 years ago I switched my team over to gaming laptops, also the ROGs from Asus. Perfect for CBT development, very powerful, and not that expensive. When people ask why I have World of Warships loaded on my work computer, it's for benchmarking purposes and shut up.
Woah, I was about to get a new machine myself and this is right on time, like it was meant for me. Thank you Devlin, you're the best. Regards, Joshua Francis.
Great coverage Devlin! One downside to the MacBook Air M1 is that you can’t connect to an external monitor. I learned that lesson the hard way. If anyone is in the market I have a like new one for sale ☺️.
Hi Sarah! I haven’t heard of that before. Why aren’t you able to connect an external monitor? Maybe it’s just a matter of getting the right cord / adapter?
I have a MacBook Pro from 2017. I have to use boot camp to run windows. There’s a known problem with running boot camp though. The internet slows way down and has made it where I can’t even download storyline (well the install after downloading articulate 360). Same problems with parallels?
I find that external SSDs are fast enough to work directly from nowadays if you buy one with a fast enough transfer speed. I use a Sandisk Extreme Pro plugged into a USB 4 port for Lightroom editing, and I don't notice any difference between that and storing the files on the internal SSD.
Had to grab a MBP M1 Max for my last 8 months over in Indonesia, but it's a nightmare using it with Parallels and virtual windows environment to run storyline and do any ID work. Especially working with triggers. For those wondering, I had a paid version of parallels and a 64GB ram version with about 57GB of ram dedicated to the virtual environment. It's not ideal.
this is the most timely comment I have ever come across.. I was debating between a Mac and PC for doing my e-learning work and you sir have helped tip the scale.
@@crazycrypto9454 Glad to help. I think if I had to choose between the two again, I would have bought an alienware laptop that has windows 11 natively installed. I basically delayed as much work in Articulate Storyline as I could until I got back to Australia to use my desktop PC again and a larger screen. I'm using an LG CX 49" as a monitor and have an RTX3090 with a 10900k cpu and about 128gb of ram. The 3090 is overkill but I hate waiting to render video that has multiple layers of effects applied.
Oh no! That sounds terrible. I wonder why it is giving you such trouble. There was some discussion on my prev video about M1 Macs and people seemed to have a good experience with 16 GB+ RAM, but wow...I would be so frustrated! Thank you for letting us know.
That does sound bad. My 13" MBP M1 with 8 GB of RAM is still faster running Storyline in Parallels than the PC work laptop I was given. Having watched this video, I now know that I'll need some more RAM to speed things up a bit.
@@seanwordingham9892 @Sean Wordingham ram won't help. Running anything in a virtual environment isn't optimal. It's 2022. Just get a laptop that has the ability to run native applications that you need.
Hello! I'm seeking advice regarding the suitability of using the Apple MacBook Pro 13.3" i7 2016 model, equipped with 16 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD, for instructional design work. Would this configuration be sufficient for such tasks? Additionally, I'm contemplating between purchasing a second-hand computer that's well-maintained, or investing in a new system. Could you also provide insights into whether macOS or Windows would be better for this purpose? Your guidance is much appreciated!
Hi. I've got a MB Air M1--with 8 gigs of RAM (and 512 GB SSD). I tried out Storyline via Parallels (trials for both) briefly, and it seemed OK, but slightly sluggish. Switching back and forth wasn't bad, I suppose. At this point, I'm just interested in learning Storyline and then, once I've completed a few projects, creating a portfolio and website. Think I'll be OK for now? I could, at some point, upgrade to the M2 (and if so, I'd definitely get 16 gigs of RAM)...but maybe for now, this is fine? Thank you.
Hey Devlin, Few days back I requested you to make a video that guides us on how to make an instructional design project from start to finish, using ADDIE model. I am requesting you again to make a video on the same. Looking forward to the it, many thanks!
Which computer do you use for ID work? Or which are you planning on getting? :D

Very timely video Devlin!! Keep em coming!
Glad to hear it! And thanks for the support :D. Let us know which laptop you wind up going with.
Awesome and informative! Thank you so much! Transitioning into ID work and this will be my first laptop. I feel ready to find the right one now :)
Thank you for this video! I searched through your channel for a video like this on Sunday lol 👌🏽

@@DevlinPeckYT Sorry - clarification - you can only connect one external monitor. I've become accustomed to using two external monitors.
Hi! Thanx for this video, Devlin! The link to 27 Inch Eye Care External Monitor took me to the Logitech Webcam :)
Sorry about that and thanks for letting me know! Resolved now :D

That's amazing! I have heard of people doing that but didn't know it was so fast...good callout.
Anyone has an idea about Microsoft surface laptops for an ID work (actually who is a beginner SL user)

Can you share your experience about XPS13 plus if you have it?

I'd avoid the Mac and get an XPS if I were you. Parallels are awful when you get into more advanced SL features like triggers and jscript

Haha thanks Faizan!
XPS 15 is a great laptop. Today I have a LG Gram 16, also a great machine very light and with a big screen for my work.
Very nice! Sounds like a good one :D
Do people prefer laptops over desktops for ID?
