I was an Instructional Designer in San Francisco back in 2000 when it was new and nobody knew what it was. Then there was 911 and the attendance of the school I was working for dropped, and they let most the designers go in order to save money, and ended up getting a plug and play platform (Prometheus then eCollege). The next year (2002) the designers were scaled back again and I was also laid off. Instead of seeking further employment in the field I decided to travel. Maybe not the best career move, but I had an interesting life as a result. Every now and then I'd apply for an instructional design job, but as there is more formal training now and I didn't have a degree in it, I was eliminated in the first or second round of interviews. Your video was my first good look at what it is going to require to get back in the game. The salary it seems, adjusting for inflation, hasn't changed much. Since I haven't paid off the loan for my initial Master's in education I'm not going to get a second Master's in it. Not at that salary level anyway. It was good to hear that you don't really have to. After Covid I think the field will grow, but I also think that with the plethora of tools available now a lot of people, schools, and companies are just going to do it alone without a team of Instructional Designers like back in the day. Maybe I'm wrong but either way I hope to get enough understanding of what is happening now to re-enter as an independent consultant and help schools and businesses with their online learning implementation or their RFP rather than as an Instructional Designer per se. But your video has given me a road map to follow to update my skill set and understanding of what it means now to be an Instructional Designer. So thanks.
Thanks so much for sharing your journey with us. It can never hurt to update your skills and get back in the game, even if many schools and businesses are trying their best with what they've got. Hopefully the rest of my content will help you along the way :)
Thanks so much! I am JUST now starting this transition from 23 years of teaching…which I am still doing…I have to eat so I cannot just resign :-) I will be watching ALL of your videos! Once again Thanks so much!
I am a teacher working on a graduate certificate to transition into Instructional Design. The information you have shared through your many videos have been very helpful. You have showed me that when we are public servants, we can always find the space to do so. You are much appreciated! Thank you for helping others like me.
Just recently I learned about ID being a profession and as somebody who has done 5 years of Learning & Development/Trainer, I think it's a nice route to branch onto for the future. Being in front of audience can get tiresome after time whereas building the content allows for a more self-regulated pace... something I think will enjoy, especially coming from Arts & Design background myself. Thanks, Devlin for sharing all this info, I will be looking at the topic.
Yes, it definitely sound likes you would enjoy a career in instructional design. Your background and experience will serve you well, too. You’re welcome for the content and we look forward to helping you along the journey 😃

Devlin, this is by far the best video I have seen on becoming an ID. Thank you so much for taking the time to create such a useful and informative video. I have lots to do know, but at least I have a clear direction thanks to you sir.
I'm looking to transition from my teaching role into an eLearning/ ID role as I really like designeing the lessons and it is encouraging to me to find this video and discover that I'm a lot farther along than I thought. I was worried this was going to be a large mountain to climb whilst juggling a full time teaching job. This was a great video and your channel was a great find. Thank you so much.
You're so welcome, Jose. It's a lot of work, but teachers often have a lot of the bases already covered. The biggest gap for teachers Is usually on the tech side, so I'd suggest diving into Storyline when you get a chance :D

This is an astonishingly great video. I earned my M. Ed. in EdTech in the mid-90s, but although concepts haven't changes that much, the tech has. Thank you so much for taking the trouble to make and post this!
I should have watched this ahead of my interview. I apply many of these theories and strategies in my design, but given my lack of formal ID training, but education and many years teaching, I know them just not their names. I will add this to my prep list for the next one!
Thank you for making this video. I've been teaching at the elementary level for over 20 years, but I am excited to learn about ID because I think this is a fantastic fit for my skill base. Dear Devlin, thank you for the videos. I was lost for long while trying to find something that aligns with my MSc in Education, kind of struggling to find work anywhere but this has given me purpose.
I love a list with bullet points and action items, thank you! I'm 2 months into self-teaching all about ID and eLearning. About 50% of my time spent on videos, podcasts, books, etc. is a combination of other field experts, authors, podcasters, etc and 50% is now by way of Devlin Peck. Glad that you found your way here! You can definitely make the transition successfully if you work at it consistently between now and the end of the year. And we look forward to helping you how we can along the journey :D. Stay in touch!
You had me nervous with this video - as an ID for 20+ years I am thrilled that folks have discovered ID and also a bit nervous about folks with no experience marketing themselves as an instructional designer - something many of us have degrees and loads of experience in. You definitely covered the basics and truth be told - these skillsets take time, effort and energy to develop! My roommate in college was getting her multi-subject teaching credential and while there is a TON of crossover - NONE of our classes overlapped. That being said, watching distance learning the last couple of years with my own children, if there is one thing every school district could and should do - it would be to hire an instructional designer.
Hi Cheryl! Thanks for watching, and that's great that you've been in the field for so long. I'm sure you've seen a lot of changes! And yes, it's great seeing so many new people come into the profession. Trying to do my part with this channel to help people get a lay of the land and start practicing the skills they'll need to be successful in the space.
Thank you so much, Devlin! Your videos helped me prepare myself for my interview. I just received the news that I got the role! I'm very excited to transition from a product trainer to an instructional designer.
I have a masters in instructional design but it was before a lot of this elearning, I still have not landed an instructional design job but I want to accomplish my goal and work from home. I hope your video will help
Thanks for all the tips and guidance on working in this field. I really appreciate this. I've landed my first instructional design job this past month. I got lucky because of my previous position, which was providing training to management staff using a new system. I think I really need to learn more on the theory side of things. I know the tech., but the theory and principles would definitely take me to another level. Not earning what you mentioned the average is for this position, but I'm still very thankful that I got my foot in the door. I know now what I need to do to get to that next level for sure. :) Thanks again!
Congratulations on landing the first ID role! That's the biggest step :D. It's only up from here, and I can hopefully continue helping along your journey.

@@DevlinPeckYT you’re welcome. Thank you Devlin for helping us.
I am JUST now starting this transition from 23 years of teaching…which I am still doing…I have to eat so I cannot just resign :-)

Once again Thanks so much!
You’re welcome! And you’re going to do great 😃. Keep us posted and let me know if you have any questions along the way.
I am a teacher working on a graduate certificate to transition into Instructional Design. The information you have shared through your many videos have been very helpful. I feel more more knowledgeable on what to focus on in order to be a good candidate for a job (even without experience in the field). You have showed me that when we are public servants, we can always find the space to do so. You are much appreciated! Thank you for helping others like me.
You're welcome! I'm happy to help, and thanks for watching :)
Devlin, thanks for this information. I'm a classroom teacher and RUclipsr who has spent a long time honing my craft of teaching Economics in the classroom and online. After over a decade teaching, I really want to make the transition into instructional design as I think this is where education is moving in the future. I'll be looking at more of your content as I prepare to make the move. Thank you again for this great intro to ID and I look forward to future productions!

I should have watched this ahead of my interview. I apply many of these theories and strategies in my design, but given my lack of formal ID training, but education and many years teaching, I know them just not their names. I will add this to my prep list for the next one!
