2012 S80 T5 owner from Asia here where it is hot, humid and wet. Been a solid car and it keeps going and going. Hardly anything goes wrong and i rarely had to take her in for any corrective maintenance while I see BMW and Mercedes around me break. Covered 212,000km to date, never consumes oil and never leaked. Not once. The Swedes really know how to make a solid car and they should be proud.
We swedes used to make some good cars, both Volvo and Saab. I'm driving a Saab 9-5 myself ☺ I guess the only good car we still make is Koenigsegg (haha), I live just by the factory in Ängelholm so I see them all the time. But a bit to much for my budget lol
I have a 2012 XC70 AWD. Its been a solid, comfortable, reliable ride. Dog, kids, camping, fishing, kayak hauler. Sleeps 2 easy if you get into camp to late! Also great for day trips in the winter to Crater Lake or the snow parks! Love your videos Scotty, Thank you from Southern Oregon

Funny how it is the other way around here in EU. You see a lot of these cars here. And seeing a truck is very rare. People always seem to turn their heads when they see pass one by.
Hi Scotty! Had two Honda Civic's before I went to Volvo. Gotta say not as reliable as the Honda's but good cars nonetheless. I'm currently on 174000 miles on my MK1 S60 2.0 T. The 5 cylinder engine still starts like and runs champ but the suspension components need replacing which is a common thing due to the soft bushings.
The early P2s are always the most problematic. Those P2 post 03/04 are probably a lot better with updated bushing designs. The P1 Volvo's are quite durable as well and relatively easy to work on suspension wise vs the P2. Have an 02 S80 2.0T and an 04 S40 2.4i in my family. Still drives brilliantly, except the S40 needs an alignment hahaha
Suspension and engine mounts are things you better get used to fixing whilst owning a Volvo, how ever you can have peace of mind you engine and transmission will give you no trouble so long as you didn't buy an early - mid 2000s T6.
That generation was a good one for Volvo. I have a black S80 V8 with 200,000 miles. But the engine still looks brand new and feels brand new. The car practically brings me life.
I've traded my 2008 Daihatsu Sirion 1.0 for a 2010 Renault Clio 1.2... I can hear you swearing. I can hear you swearing, but this is one of the good Renault's. No turbo, no crappy camchain or GDi or variable valve timing or coils that blow out every 1,000 miles. The engine is bulletproof, no oil burning, one owner, good price and boy, does it drive nicely. French comfort in capital letters. Also the garage I bought it from is the Dutch equivalent of you. Honest to the bone. And yes, I followed your advice and even used my OBD-scanner during the testdrive.
Bought the 1976 six-cylinder Volvo Wagon in the mid-1980s for $3500. Kept it for seven years and maintenance was about another $2000 total. But the dealer became increasingly hesitant to work on it. Tried to tell me that a battery drain issue was due to the 1-amp clock. Yup, 12 watts to drive… a clock??? Traded it in when the flywheel gear lost a few teeth and it wouldn’t start. They told me to bring it in to see how much they would give me for it. I told them it wasn’t going anywhere and to ask the mechanics; as they’d seen it quite a lot recently. The salesman came back, gave me a good price for it, and told me to leave it unlocked with the key under the front mat. Never saw it again. Bought a used 4-cylinder standard Volvo wagon. Loved that car. Never gave me an ounce of trouble.
My wife has a 2011 xc70 wagon T6 with 76k miles which we bought new. I recently had the Polestar upgrade installed which gave the car 25 more HP. The car is in great shape and has even beat a few Mustangs too....so it's fun to drive. Our plan is to keep as long as we can.
@@stewartdickinson8242 Polestar means it''s tuned by Volvo with warranties intact. Not much of an increase of performance but probably noticeable and nice to know warranties aren't void. Late answer but someone might wanna know.
@@thisisnotok2100 lol If there was a Replacement recall transmission that came out sure , I could deal with the radiator issue or something else but not the transmission,
One of my dorm mates from my university days had one of the old, boxy style Volvo station wagons. We were all glad for Volvo's reliability because we relied on him a lot to get us around.
I have V50 D4 now with 303K Kms and i do 500 kms every week! Runs amazing eats only 5,2 liters per 100Kms! Just incredible!!! 😅 then I got My wife now XC90 D5 with 200K! We never have to fix anything!! Mechanic put both up to his computer machine - said All good you can go…😂
I worked at Volvo dealership and got to road test these V 70's and other models but the wagons always drive nice. I'd buy one used definitely. It's a shame that Toyota doesnt make a sport wagon.
I have a 2020 Volvo V90 Cross County All Wheel Drive. I love it. The only things I had to do was to change the oil and rotate the tires. Volvo in my opinion is the best European car ever made.
Of late, Scotty has been making me wish for a second-hand Toyota and, now, a Volvo. This video too brought back fond memories of our visit to New York a couple of years ago 🥰
My first car is a 2011 V70 2,4D. Sturdy, pretty decent power, good gas milage, quiet, extremely comfortable (the seats are more comfortable than some sofas honestly) and the engine can last a very long time as long as you use common sense, take care of it and do the usual service it requires and is cheaper to fix than for example a BMW 5 series or an Audi A4 or A6.
In April of 2024, I purchased my first Volvo, a 2004 XC70. Still a lot of luxury for an 'older' car, and that 5 cylinder engine just won't quit. Got it at 183K miles, and I am counting on another 300 to 400K more. Great cars!! Thank you Scotty for reviewing Volvos!!!!!!
Got a Volvo V50 for $1700 with 180k on it. It's a great car. Love the 5 cylinder engine. It's a little on the small side for a sporty man. But nice car for a woman or very thin person. I can see the XC70 being a great car for almost anyone. It'd be a tough choice between the 2 but I think I prefer the V50 with a comfy seat cover. It's too inexpensive to pass up.
Former 1990 Volvo bertone 780 owner here lol... black stallion edition 230+ hp strait four cylinder intercooled turbo all rotor brakes, lightweight aluminum chassis, Ferrari stitched interior, hand assembled in Sweden Rear wheel drive coup. ( $45,000 in 1990 ) Loved Loved ❤️ that car! 🇸🇪
I hace the same engine on my 2007 S80 with 230k miles and still drives like a dream, feels solid and still strong, this cars are absolutely amazing Love Volvo
Have you ever heard about Dacia Logan? Dacia is a Romanian company, cooperatin with Renault. The 1.4l 75hp engine goes up to 700.000km without any major problems. Theyr cost of ownership (revision) is somewhere around 50$/ year. The fuel consumption is around 6.0l / 100km mixed. The engines are boolet proof and can be easily converted to work on LGP instead of gas.
I remember about 20y ago an article about him. He was driving the Skoda OCTAVIA 1st generation. Middle class' car. I thought myself too, such a humble guy.
My 2010 XC 70 T6 still pulls like a Clydesdale and rides like a (real) Cadillac despite having 138,000 miles. Volvos age like fine wine. Also, despite living its entire life in the rust belt, there is no major surface rust. Excellent vehicle. Just to note, Volvo changed the recommended oil viscosity's over the years to meet fuel economy regulations despite not physically changing the engines internals. My owners manual for my 2010 XC70 states that the 3.0L T6 can use: 0w-30 synth 5w-30 synth or blend 0w-40 synth 5w-40 synth or bled The newer ones only recommend 5w-30 Highly recommend using the 0W-40 oil over the 5w-30 for maximum protection in southern climates. I currently use a 0w-40/5w-30 blend up in Northern NYS for performance driving and cold starting reasons. Edit: Proud to see that my wagon gets the "scotty seal of approval"!. Also, I don't mean to correct you scotty, but all Volvo 3.0L T6 engines only have 1 twin scroll turbo. Basically it acts like a twin turbo setup as there is no lag, but it uses only one impeller/turbine to do the job. Much more simpler and robust.
Hey, hey hey! Careful what you say about the looks of the 240! Mine lasted for almost 25 years and nearly had 300,000 miles on it when it just quit one day on the driveway! But when I washed it, it always looked new. The paint last a wile too, even after I brought it to dry heat New Mexico. And it started up everytime, come rain or snow! I replaced it with a 2002 V60 SW, and replaced that one recently with a 2020 XC40 T5. Love this car! So I know the true worth of Volvo’s! ❤️
Thanks for the video, Scotty! Ive got mine, same model, from my spouse last year after my Civic got totalled. 2014 XC70 T6, 78k miles, navy blue with tan interior. Im the second onwner, burns a bit of oil but runs fine, no problems so far. Youre on point, its such a safe automobile!
This seems to be an intermittent problem. They hold 8qts of oil, so as long as you check the oil once in a while, you're fine. (also, i believe you can check the oil via the dash guage... can't recall how tho, sorry) Enjoy ✌
I can't say anything on their vehicles but at my work we get volvo pre built i6 turbo'd diesel motors that are mounted in a protective cage, half the time they dont work and require roughly 30 hours of labor to just get them running good.
I'm proud owner of one xc70, this is my 3rd Volvo, and not disappointed. have some expensive maintenance coming up but this car is worth it. I did 3 week 8k road trip last year around USA and it was super comfy ride, everything fits in, seats super comfy, sound system is great, I threw a nice cargo box on the roof and bike rack in the hitch, no better adventure car out there period
I live in Sweden. Those things are EVERYWHERE. V70 is the most common car hands down, but also V40 and the new ones of course. But we live station wagons, the practicallity of it. Sweden is a tall and narrow country in comparison stretching from Tallahassee to Toronto and 75% of it is covered with forrest, we need these things to get around and haul stuff. Volvos are expensive even with mileage on them just because they hold up so well in the north with harsh winters and warm summers and there are cheap parts everywhere. Off course I am biased as Volvo is something of a national pride, but I know tons of people doing their own service on these things in their own garage because lots of people knows how to and it's relatively easy and very affordable. And low maintenance to begin with.
I got myself a 2001 XC70 a year or so back. I'm the 13th owner!!! Didn't worry me too much, thinking that each owner had it for a couple of years and probably looked after it, after all to them it was a new car. It has 183k miles on it. I fitted a new intercooler to get rid of a smoking exhaust. It drives great it's quick and tows like a dream. I should have stuck with the Volvo brand all of my driving life. I started driving way back in 1976 my first car was a Volvo 145, it's good to be back driving a great brand.
Hi Scotty, ive had this same car for 6 years and 100k miles, only thing ive ever had to done to it is regular service and a brake change :D Great car! Cheers from Sweden.
I bought a 2010 Volvo V70 w/185k miles on it for $6k and they delivered it to me three states away. One owner car with impeccable service records. Great car and the dogs love it.
I'd be watching (in the long term) for leaking camshaft seals, rear mainseals if there's any similarity to the 850T5. Also, to-the-firewall-side mounted turbos will be very difficult to access as will most things in this engine bay. It looks like there was quite a leap forward from the 850 in quality. Good, proper and TIMELY maintenance will be an absolute must as it was with the 850 chassis. Some older BMW's are super reliable and simple compared to today's vehicles however this'd beat them hands down on safety issues. A very good, solid car but watch for front end complexity, weight & oil leaks...over time. Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance.
I have a 2012 XC60 and let me tell you, Scotty is RIGHT! Bought it in 2017 with 100k and now it has 207k. I used it as a rideshare vehicle for 3 years and it still looks new inside! All I've done is both axles (never let anyone tell you you can't put aftermarket axles in a Volvo) PCV oil trap, fuel rail pressure sensor, wheel bearing, and fuel pressure sensor. Other than that, plugs, coils, full synthetic oil+filter every 7500 miles (now every 5k considering miles) just did coolant, and trans gets serviced every 50k. I have the same engine and it's not twin turbo. There's only 1 turbo, however Volvo did make a 2.9L twin turbo straight six 15 years ago or so.
I have a ‘12 Volvo XC70 T6 we did buy new and it has 81k miles now. It’s been nearly perfect. Small things like replacement engine mount, battery, but that’s about it with regular oil changes and maintenance. Still looks new too.
I bought my Volvo estate six years ago I got it at 85, 000 miles , I've done another fifty odd thousand miles and the engine is as smooth as you like , I just give it regular oil and filter changes , everything else I've had to replace is just wear like tyres , brakes , etc bags of room in them and I tow a trailer with a motorbike on to track days with one of my sons .
I am loving my 2003 XC70. Paid $2K for it this year, all in, knowing it would need a few K of repairs. So many computer features to figure out though. She doesn't look 18 years old! 148,000 miles
you hit the nail on the head with that remark about the build quality that one can even hear it in the door shutting action. even my volvo c30 has that quality solid feel that not even toyota or honda can replicate but only luxury brands like lexus can only dream of rivaling.
@@james6234 it’s Miami or rather any major city around the world. I moved to South Florida from the North about 2 years ago. I am about 1 hour north of Miami and can say with certainty that Florida is actually one of the cheapest States to live in. No state income tax and the prices of utilities are dirt cheap! I went from spending 100’s of $ on electricity in the northeast per month to about a $75 electric bill per month in Florida!
My mom had bought a 740 brand new in 1989 and it only had 3 problems. She bought a lot of cars after that but the Volvo still was kicking until 2011. Great car.
Always owned Japanese cars... then I bought a S40 as I really liked the looks. Has been good but I can see what could go wrong. I would probably replace the PCV valve every 100,000km, and the upper radiator hose and thermostat at 150,000km. Car has 60,000 trouble free kms so far. A comfortable and beautiful car.
Haven't had the same luck as you, bought the car and the Turbo started letting oil past and making noise. Hopefully I won't have to do anything else appart from normal maintenance
Absolutely the worst transmission for a XC70, history of failures due to Volvo not recommending ATF changes in passenger car use, though they recommend ATF changes for taxi and Police use, the AW55N without ATF changes sludges up the linear shift solenoids and causes valve body wear, no changeable ATF filter and overheating due to poor cooling kills the Volvo XC70 AW55N transmission.
@@m.g.540 Transmission filter is not the issue, but rather the fluid itself! It is highly discouraged to replace the transmission filter. It works completely differently than an engine filter. Search for "avoid replacing the transmission filter" on RUclips for more info from the experts!

Koenigsegg's freevalve tech really is a genius system. I hope other auto manufacturers get that tech and implement it in their cars.

If I'm not mistaken. V8 engine is build by yamaha for volvo
I have a 1996 Volvo 960. Bought it for 400 Bucks. It runs like a Champ. I Love My Tank.
I've owned 3 volvos loved every single one of them. Having said that the last one I purchased was'07 and my daughter is driving it.
I’m definitely going to miss your road test route! I know it by heart now.
Hi, just wondering what the difference the Polestar makes over a standard T6. I may have an opportunity to acquire a 2015 with this upgrade.TIA.
@@stewartdickinson8242 Polestar means it''s tuned by Volvo with warranties intact. Not much of an increase of performance but probably noticeable and nice to know warranties aren't void. Late answer but someone might wanna know.

Own my third XC70 (2012) 81,000 miles - Absolutely Best Cars (and they’re station wagons!!) Perfect car for Western North Carolina!!!

My owners manual for my 2010 XC70 states that the 3.0L T6 can use:
0w-30 synth
5w-30 synth or blend
0w-40 synth
5w-40 synth or bled
The newer ones only recommend 5w-30
Highly recommend using the 0W-40 oil over the 5w-30 for maximum protection in southern climates. I currently use a 0w-40/5w-30 blend up in Northern NYS for performance driving and cold starting reasons.
Edit:
Proud to see that my wagon gets the "scotty seal of approval"!.
Also, I don't mean to correct you scotty, but all Volvo 3.0L T6 engines only have 1 twin scroll turbo. Basically it acts like a twin turbo setup as there is no lag, but it uses only one impeller/turbine to do the job. Much more simpler and robust.
The older T6's in P2 Volvos were actually twin turbos, Scotty is far from the only one who got confused.

One I saw had five significant oil leaks
It’s quite the opposite over here, you barely find any sedans in Sweden

The transmission on the Volvos are Aisin transmission Scotty...
Hmm really. I didn't know
Excellent automatic transmissions.
Aisin is the world's largest transmission manufacturer. Great products!
