    It's natural. You may be straining your eyes a little much. You can never eliminate color nor would you want to. It's just a tool. LIke any tool, or any skill takes time and practice and repetition.

    would you say that establishing value is a lot like establishing proportion, in that one value is relative to the values around it?

    yes that is correct. The only exceptions are pure black and pure white.
