Composition and the ability to compose and design pictures is a fundamental skill for an artist to develop. A method I've used to develop my own compositional skills is to study tonal composition.
This video tutorial will demonstrate how to draw a tonal composition study by studying 'old master' paintings, illustrations and movie stills.
In part 1 we will discuss the principles and concepts of tonal composition. I will also share the materials I like to use to draw and execute tonal composition studies and sketches.

This helped me see the difference in shadow vs light. The details are in the midtones but they are distracting for me when trying to decide what is shadow and what is light. I want to group the midtones in the shadow for some reason. Thanks for this video. I really want to master this so I can have some fun with color.

Really helpful videos Chris, thankyou so much. Can I be a little pedantic and give some advice on sound? You should put a "pop sheild" in font of your mic. It stops the air from P's and B's hitting the mic so hard and causing that big "POP" sound in the low end. Makes it more comfortable to listen to. :-)
good feedback thank you. Have improved the audio in newer vids
i just blindness copy professional and can't study much but now i know , thanks you
