Really enjoy hearing about the cows. I know raising feed is very important, but it is ultimately all about the cows and showing updates of their lives is interesting.
Jan - We enjoy watching your videos. I milked cows to earn money in college and can relate to some of the things that you share with us. I especially admire the condition of your cows and the work that you put into maintaining your equipment. On average, how many lactation cycles do you keep your cows for?
Milk comes out of the cow at body temperature. (Which is over 100° F, or 38° C) They have a cooler at the end of the line, which cools the milk before it enters the milk tank. The milk tank is also refrigerated, to cool the milk further, and maintain it's temperature at around 34° F, or 1° C, until it's picked up, and taken to the milk plant.
Found it interesting that you put a filter in for the post-milking wash cycle. I don't believe that we ever did that on our dairy farm when I was growing up. The new camera did a fine job.
Well done Jan. Informative. Thanks for everything you do and done producing quality dairy for us CANUCKS . Wishing you and your family a MERRY CHRISTMAS and A HAPPY NEW YEAR 👍👍👍. Thank you for sharing. Be safe🇨🇦
Excellent video, thanks for sharing. I’ve had a few hoof repair videos in my feed; is that something you use on a regular basis or only when you notice a cow has issues?
How do you call that flushing system you have in your cups in between cows? I'm farming in new zealand and have never seen it before. Does it prevent the cows from cross contaminating mastitis as well?
I sure enjoy your videos...no matter how many times you may have the same stuff I never get tired of watching your sweet ladies...new camera is great and it may be just me but seems more clear!!! Loved it!!! 👌👍
So in the beginning one of the cows had hobbles on, is that cause she is a first calf mom? To keep her from kicking the first bit of learning the milking parlor?
No, that's a cow from group 1, which is second lactation and older. (Group 2 is first lactation) If you look closely, you can also see the red tape around her leg. Which means that she's a treated cow. Sickness can cause leg weakness. She has likely shown signs of slipping, falling, or even splitting her legs. Which can cause injury. The hobbles help prevent that from happening while she recovers and regains her strength.
Would love to see a video were you discuss milking twice a day vs three times a day vs volunteer milking systems. Milk Production, Cow Health, Labor Increase.
Just recently found your channel.... What is the arm doing over the sand bedding? (17:59) Just curious. I have been enjoying watching your videos. They are educational. Thank you so much!
I think I remember from previous videos that the milk truck comes by every 2 or 3 days. But their tank is big enough to hold another day or so, in case the weather cancels travel.
The cow is sick, which can cause hind leg weakness. She has shown signs slipping, or even splitting her legs, which causes injury. The straps help prevent that while she recovers.
So much work. It makes me appreciate milk, butter and cheese even more. I amso impressed with all the hygiene procedures. How old were you when you learned the procedures for milking cows? How many people are doing the milking? Are different people on early and late shifts? I remember one Christmas when the whole family got flu. It must be a problem if several people are sick at the same time. What about the calves getting used to antibiotics? Are you worried about the creation of superbugs? What sort of camera are you using? I worked for a company which made refrigerated bulk milk tanks when I was a student, 51 years ago.
Watch this video and I am wondering how you or the unit (computer) keeps track of what %age of milk each cow gives. Like the cow’s collars must send a signal somewhere to the computer to match the milk.
Yeah so every cow has a collar on that records every action it does and has a specific Id for the cow. And there will be a sensor when they enter the parlor so it assigns the right milker to the cow. So you can look up any cow and see how much milk they produced as well as many other statistics
Does it ever get too cold to flush the holding area? Why don't you feel it is necessary to use a predip? That automatic post dip certainly doesn't do a very job of teat coverage. How often do you have to really clean the parlor?
Great video, i really enjoy watching your videos and look forward to seeing them. Was wondering what do you do with water that goes through plate cooler. We do maintenance for a dairy farm, milking a thousand cows, we run plate cooler water into tanks and used for cows. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Amazing video Jan! Interesting and informative! Seems like the new camera has more clarity under all light situations with much better contrast and improved definition. Good camera! Thanks for the video! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
There's no set amount of time that a cow can be milked. It depends on her health, and weather she continues to get pregnant every year. (This can vary, just like with humans) They have one cow on their farm that's around to 10 years old. (They're hoping that she can surpass 100,000 liters of milk over her lifetime total, once she has her next calf within the next couple of months) Cows are typically sold for beef and other byproducts, once they can no longer be milked.
Why do you add the new filter before the wash cycle? We used to run the wash cycle without filter and put the filter in when the pre-wash was finished before start of each milking. The camera is really good!
3:47 why is that cows rear legs tied?
She was weak then split, those wobbles keep that from happening again
