The "bumping" method was the only way my grandpa checked his dairy cows for calves. I was at a longhorn show with a family my son worked with in college. I asked the boss when a particular cow was due. She said she hadn't preg checked the cow and wasn't sure how far she was in calf. Showed them the "bump" test. They were amazed when they felt the calf from the outside, they had never done it. My son showed a bunch of college friends the trick when he was at a dairy consortium in New Mexico. None of them had heard of it. He was the bomb. Having a bought of PTSD with all that snow. Reminds me of the snowpocalypse we had in Texas February 2021. Keep the videos coming. Miss being around a dairy.
Sounds like we got about the same severity of snow storm here in MB when it passed through us. Not a huge amount of snow, around 10 cm, but lots of wind and with it drifts, can make the roads interesting. Not sure what the forecast was for you guys, but there was only supposed to be a minimal amount of snow here so it was a bit unexpected.
Here in southern Missouri in the US we call that bumping a calf. It's neat to determine how far a long a cow is by bumping. Of course the farther along they are the closer to the skin the calf is and they bump real easy and hard.Good video as always.
I was raised on a farm and I can smell everything by memory. Not bad. I miss all the animals and especially the babies. Stay warm and merry Christmas 🙏🙏🎁
I’m almost 70 and my grandpa taught me how to check a cow by pushing on the side when I was a young boy he called it bumping a cow only works if the cow is far enough along
Jen... hahahaha.. lol... The first thing I was thinking Jan should shave that beard off that cow. Can you imagine having long hair like that around your tongue?
Have you ever considered experimenting with various forms of stimuli to see if it would have any effect on production. Examples of stimuli would be music or a television. I watch a lot of different channels and have notice that cows tend to behave much like large dogs. It would be curious to see the results of such an experiment. Did a google search after posting this and found this. For years, studies have looked into the effects of classical music on a cow's milk production. Back in 2001, researchers from the University of Leicester published their 'Moosic Study', which found that dairy cows produce more milk when listening to relaxing classical tunes. Oct 10, 2019
Thank you for sharing all that you and your family do on the farm. For those like myself it is eye opening to see the work and time it takes to keep the cows healthy and the farm going.
Thanks Jan for the new episode. Very interesting and humorous with the lady and her game with the tongue! That brought back fond memories of helping out at a dairy as a child and grabbing a cow's tongue. Days later she remembered and kicked me.🤣
It is what it is and you just deal with it. I'm not complaining you said and you just do what you have to do. Most farmers I know don't complain and they just deal with what comes up just like you folks do.
Great video . Liked the cow photo bombing you at the end of video .lol Ps you can keep the snow out west none here on PEI yet still hoping for another round of golf or 2 .
Thanks for sharing the red neck way of pregnancy check I've been around dairy men quite a bit but I've never heard of this way of checking before. You learn something everyday if you pay attention. 👍
I really enjoy your channel and haven't seen one that I don't like. I have a question unrelated to farming though. I would assume your mom still cooks most all meals for you?? With so much dairy at your home, is there any great Norwegian recipes that she makes that someone like me; a 61 year old who loves to cook and bake who lives in eastern North Carolina, USA, could learn to cook? Thanks so much again for making these interesting videos.
Hi I have been watching your channel for a couple of years now find them interesting I was raised in a farm and I have never seen a cow do that with her tongue from Manitoba
Have you considered using robots to keep the barns cleaner? Expensive, yes! However, (10th generation dairyman) has shown it keeps them cleaner. Helps with the bedding, etc. Enjoy your videos as always!
10th gen has a different type of barn. The robot skims the manure down the holes in the slat floor to a pit underneath. Jan's barn is a solid slab floor so the robots that 10th gen have won't work on his. Manure is heavy and hard to push all the way to the cleanout pit, robot would have a hard time doing that and probably not do a very good job, so bobcat most likely the best option.
Hey Ian i am in Limestone Tn we have been wondering for sometime now how how do the dairy farmers pay there milk men or women i know things are a lot higher up there down here its a salary and usually you just milk the cows that is it you dont do all the other stuff you do some might but not usually thanks great videos
As a cattle veterinarian in the US, the last segment confuses me. If you palpated her to see if she was in heat, you would be able to tell if she’s pregnant somewhere between 5-7 months at the same time, Jan! Way more accurate that “bumping her” for pregnancy as we call it.
Your drone shot of the property was spot on, never looks that big while you're on the ground. Winter has arrived ❄❄❄❄
As a Canadian I want to say thanks for the important job you do.
The last shot was hilarious. "What are you doing girl?!" Too funny.
They do have a personality. The last one was showing off for us. " look what I can do" lol

That cow stole the show at the end!! Another great job, Jan!
Cow kiss
Try spraying the bucket with Pam spray for cooking! It will help keep the snow from sticking to shovels plows buckets everything you use on snow!
Dairy farming in Canada, job requirements:
1. Deal with manure
2. Deal with snow
3. Other minor tasks
Deal with someone video shooting getting in the way 😁😁💯💯💯💯

We call it punching a calf...sounds more violent than bumping. Anyone else call it that

Holy cow!!! You DO drive the case loader to town. Love to see snow in Saskatchewan when I’m in Florida.
I’m almost 70 and my grandpa taught me how to check a cow by pushing on the side when I was a young boy he called it bumping a cow only works if the cow is far enough along
Man, that's so much work. I admire you dedication to these wonderful animals. That last girl had a lot on her mind. LOL
Busy time for you, Jan for cleaning up snowing, good care of beautiful cows, hope that calf to born healthy !!😉👍🐄🚜❤️
What an awesome ending...that cow and her tongue :)
Cow at the end is attempting to formulate some words. She has a message for Jen.
Reminds me of the horse from Mr Ed sitcom show.
Jen... hahahaha.. lol... The first thing I was thinking Jan should shave that beard off that cow. Can you imagine having long hair like that around your tongue?
Cow kisses🤣🤣🤣🤣

I loved that cow's KISS Granny
I love how curious cows are. 😂😂😂
Dairy cow are so much more fun than beef. They just need to know about everything 😊
Thanks Jan for the new episode. Very interesting and humorous with the lady and her game with the tongue! That brought back fond memories of helping out at a dairy as a child and grabbing a cow's tongue. Days later she remembered and kicked me.🤣
I keep forgetting to ask you. What are the flashing yellow/amber lights above the milking parlour holding area?
Same question!
Me too
Me 3
Me 4
Something to do with the backing gate I seem to remember ??
You are a good brother taking care of your sister's plowing. Got to take care of the family!! Nice video. BTW keep as much of the snow as you want!!!
13:45 Girl's been watching too much Goat Simulator.
😂😂😂
He's a better RUclipsr than a farmer 💯💯💯💯💯💯
Hi jan.
To be honest, I don’t know how you manage to do such a good job every single time. Very well done!
Red Neck Preg Check....lol.....that cow at the end ! 😆
That cow at the end! I'm dying! 🤣🤣
Has anyone watched these videos and caught themselves losing track of the farm because they're distracted by how cute Jan is? 😅
Gotta love the last cow 😂😂
I always enjoy! Cows tongues have a life of their own. This is my second comment on your production. I hope that doesn't make me weird!
The cows look great! I have a one cow dairy, just one little jersey for our needs. Have an awesome day!
Thanks for the video, cool drone shots of the snow.👍👏

A powerful snowblower would help you get the snow off your equipment… you are such a smart guy you probably already do that!
My dad did the same thing
Great day at work Jan. Thanks for sharing your chores with us. Interesting lesson on finding out if a cow is pregnant.
At the end of the video the cow is so funny I remember on all Dairy we had cows doing that all the time
Jon.
Thank You very much for the video. It is snowing nicely. Take Care
It's Jun.
We need a house tour!
Great video thanks! I have never seen or head of checking if a cow is pregnant that way, pretty cool!
I salute your efforts to deliver a superior product. Hats off.
13:38 Hilarious Holstein!
Wow that is a cool way to see if a cow has a calf or not now I can go to work and share this with them there and try it out for ourselves Ty Jan
Getting pretty good at snow removal
Great video . Liked the cow photo bombing you at the end of video .lol Ps you can keep the snow out west none here on PEI yet still hoping for another round of golf or 2 .
What the heck was she doing at the end..lmao
She's funny if she doesn't have a name she should be Happy! Lol
Nice video thanks for sharing see you next time
185,000 subscribers, getting close for you. I can only imagine that for my channel. Congratulations 👏 keep up the good work.
Ryan, keep at it and you will get there too 🙂
@@frasermathers2287 thanks
Learned something new today r/e how to manually check for a calf!! Interesting vid..
Hilarious ending there, Jan. Nice video.
Some tongue action at the end. 😁
That's some cool cow tongue action at the end of the video at 13:40 👅🐮 What a showoff!😂
Fun vid...thanks 🚜👨🌾🚜🌠🌠🌠
I laughed so hard at that last cow! It was like she was putting on a show!
Thanks for sharing the red neck way of pregnancy check I've been around dairy men quite a bit but I've never heard of this way of checking before. You learn something everyday if you pay attention. 👍
Have you guys considered a flame thrower to melt ice on doors? Hopefully it doesn’t set barn on fire! 😮
👋👋👋👋👏👏👏👏👏
Nice video. Love seeing the cows' behaviors. Thank you for the video 😊👍 🐄
The old Dutch punch 😂
Can u mention what date it is when u film? How often do u film a week? Think u should do another q and a
Do you ever just take a moment to look for images in the cows colorings and spots? I would get so distracted....like looking at clouds.... 🐄☁️
its called Bumping a calf
That pregnancy check is the only kind we did.
I remember "punching" for calves 50 years ago. #oldschool
Gonna have to try your trick on one of my beef cows and see if I can feel the calf.
After the door do a some kind of blade huck
👍👌❤🇨🇦, another Sask boy, me too
Love your videos
Your house looks nice lit up in the dark
Nic drone shots.

you got some crazy cows!!
Hi I have been watching your channel for a couple of years now find them interesting I was raised in a farm and I have never seen a cow do that with her tongue from Manitoba
I hate dealing with snow so much that I've stopped. Got a 4X4 and just plow through it. Obviously I don't get many visitors though. Oh well.

@@shaunp9592 that makes a lot of sense. I knew there had to be a reason.
Handy dandy door clicker sounds right.
The cows are ok in the cold
Yes Actually Cows are made & Created for Cold Weather they can even servive -40 & -50 outside.
You TOTALLY know Jan wears stylish thermal underwear.
Purple people (edit: like you) likely all wear pink underwear. Not much to be proud of. I know because I am very proud!
Dad knows best!👍
Congrats to the new mom! Maybe the other cows will give her a baby shower. lol.

Don’t you love snow 🥶
Thanks for sharing your vid with us
its great seeing a New Brunswick built loader bucket on your machine

You need a snow dog for your loader to clean the parking lot be much faster
another good one!!!! thx
great video. thank you
Did you ever try spraying grease on your blade to keep snow off the inside of scoop.. The cow is saying bye bye .
I don't know about you, but I really love pushing snow with my loader.
LOL, upstaged by a cow! Love it!
Your intro reminds me of “How it’s made” also Canadian lol
Tongue aerobics at the end!!! 😂😂😂🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪
Drone footage was beautiful, thank you for another wonderful video!
Is that a Dutch tradition to put the children out of the home and tell them to build or buy a house of their own?
Pretty common for young people that age (early 20's) to want to move out of their parents house and be on their own.
Hey Jan can you do an immigration story of how your family ended up in Sask? I’m a fellow 🇳🇱🇨🇦
Loved that cow at the end! Wants to be a youtube star!
Really cold in Edmonton this week
