How many men does it take to start a John Deere in the winter? Three, one to turn the key, one to stand outside and pour the either into the air intake and then one more to stand back with a Tim Hortons coffee ( hand warmer ) to make sure no one blows up! Actually four if you include the film crew. The joys of winter.🥶
We put an ether injection system on our tractors but we hook it up so it only works when the starter is engaged, prevents flooding the engine with ether.
I totally enjoy your videos. I have learned a lot and really admire your work ethic. If we had more young people with your sense of responsibility, the US would be a much better place.
I’ve learned when it comes to hauling in the winter, your truck needs to be the same temperature as the product you’re hauling usually cold is better. That’s meaning the bed itself also install a vibrator. It truly helps.
Have you ever considered putting poly in the bottom of your bed. That’s all we have for hauling manure, silage, sugar beets etc. and it works great. Try it on a truck and you’ll love it. Load slides right out every time.
@@cindifischer6919 Yeah, you can take the boy out of the farm, but not the farm out of the boy. I think the only thing I didn't like was being stuck in the barn all the time. I always had to milk, and then do all the other stuff too.
@@dream33611 kind of sounds like Jan, but there's a whole lot more help on that farm but they're all plenty busy. The farms are much larger today. I've just seen the progress on this one farm over the years on what his father/mother does, always improving, updating, adding on to make it bigger and better. Take care.
When we need to haul lime ( like sand) in the winter we use drain oil and diesel fuel to oil the truck bed to prevent the lime from sticking to the truck box. We have used a brush or a Hudson sprayer to apply the mixture. The sprayer needs more diesel in the mix.
You can get a string trimmer and purchase a wire Broom attachment to clean your food bunks outside. Also to help clean snow around the doors or inside the buildings.Get around tight corners that get manure , build up
You need to spray fuel oil on the box walls or kloride it stops the freezing of the sand on the steel I used it all the time here in Michigan in the winter 🥶 Try it out. Love your channel 👏
I see how easy it is or can be to throw your operation into panic. If to many things go wrong at the same time can really slow you down. There is a hundred things that can go side ways in that weather.
Been a while since I saw one of your videos Jan. The cold you and your family experience is hard for me down in Texas to fathom. Stay as warm as you can!
Hello from the province west of you! Loving the videos so much. Glad you’re back at it, however I do understand having to take a break like you did, and hopefully you get some time to rest after such a long harvest and bale hauling and everything. Appreciate all the hard work, I am slowing trying to figure out how to do good RUclips videos myself and wish I could make them as good as yourself.
I know it’s been said before, but you all really keep a clean operation there. The animal comfort and health has to be through the roof. Comfy beds, good food and clean alleys - life’s good for those cows. I think the only solution for the sand issue is to have more time in the fall but with the bumper straw harvest, time just flew. Thanks for the vids.
Any way you could make a heated box? Lots of trucks that haul snow have the exhaust routed through the dump box keeping it above freezing. Not sure if it’ll work with an aluminum box, assuming that’s what your silage trucks have.
Hi Jan love your channel, any chance your truck is wider than your bobcat bucket, Raise the gate fully and you should be able to get alot of the sand out, with the loader, do it periodically while hauling loads. Just a thought.
We use a Honda 2000i or 3000 on the JD engine block heater for 30-45 minutes when the tractor is too far from 110 volt plug-in, and starts like a charm and with no ether. Much easier on the engine that you want to last as long as possible. Picked up that used Honda 2000i for $800 off Kijiji, and it was like brand new...one of my better investments.
Jon. Thank you for the walk along video. Please be careful in that snowfall as it has been a year since you folks had large 👀 snowfalls. How is the cheese barn going. Please take care.👍🤗😊😁 Richard
Great videos 😊 just adding to someone's comment about using a trimmer with a bristle brush, Stihl makes a MM56 with wheel kit that would also work great 👍 would be easier and faster then shoveling,.
Try painting the inside of the box with a glossy paint to help the sand slide out. Like they use on snow plows to make the snow roll off the blade. Might have to do twice a winter but with waste of fuel should still be ahead.

Hey Christopher here from Minnesota, you can stop sending all that cold air that were getting down here, we have gone from our 40 degree F weather, to below zero here.
Doesn't your diesel fuel in the engines stored outside turn waxy in those very cold temps? We always either kept our tractors in the warm barn with the cattle or used a dipstick heater.
In the winter months they supply winter diesel both for retail and bulk delivery. I have a duramax and have never had a problem. Not sure what additive is in it but it prevents gelling.

On the coldest winter days, what is the temperature inside the barn since it’s only heated by the cows body heat?
Already inside is cold enough to see cows breath, so close to freezing.
The plumbing in the barn is exposed, bjt doesn't seem to freeze up in the winter -- so it must stay at or above freezing temp.
