    If you make a frame out of 2 x 2 wood and then stretch the plastic both front and back you can make it so that it fits tightly inside your window and creates a double vapor barrier. If you use clear plastic you can still get light through the window. You can take it out anytime you want and put it back without any problem. I’ve been doing this for years in Utah and I have never once turned on the heater since I moved here in 1989

    I can vouch that this works well on saving energy and keeping the house warming. My late husband did this to our attic "door" in the ceiling going down to the basement. It sure helped from that cold air coming down. Now my windows are old, so I should do this, but I would probably be to hot. lol Thanks for a great tutorial on how this is done. Such a great help for so many.

    I plan on putting the doubled sided tape on. First remove the top section of doubled sided tape. Put the plastic on and secure it in place. Then move to the left side. Remove top section of tape and secure the left side of the plastic. Then do the same on the right side. Lastly, remove the tape on the bottom and secure the bottom of the plastic. That way it won't stick to any area that you are not working with.

    This video is great and all the comments too. As someone with big ol' windows, its good to know I'm not alone with this problem. Something I've done is to use blinds, not shades, and heavy blackout drapes on a rod outside the wall trim. Then you can open and close as needed. My biggest trouble now is my neighbors use of old wood stove that comes right in and makes my bedroom smell like a campfire

    Just repaired/covered a hole in a small window that has bothered me for 5 years or more. Peeled off the clear boxing tape that I tried to patch up with, followed your directions, and have a window that does not look bad. At least far better than a patch work of old tape that gathered dust and dirt. Plus it will keep the warm air in, cold air out. If only I knew about this Years ago ! Thank You !!

    Hopefully sealing of windows will help me at my house. House has no working heat landlord is determined the base board heat works but they don't produce heat when turned on. Our heaters we bought help but we can't run too many heaters down stairs because 3 of the rooms on one breaker. We choose to keep the bedroom warm, But our kitchen living Room bathroom and hallway are ice cold. I don't think it helps that some of the windows are broken from previous tenants. Can't wait for summer.
    Thanks for the tutorial!

  • @EmmaAppleBerry
    @EmmaAppleBerry 4 года назад +12

    I use old sheets etc to keep sun out in summer. Since even with uv coated newer windows and wrap around deck and blinds the sheet still makes a big difference. I pin it to the top and sides of the trim so theres no wall holes and it has a really stable base and keeps out the light and heat much better usually i dont worry about pinning the bottom but you can of course.
    Same principle just for the reverse effect. I tend to do it on only the worst windows or the sides that face the afternoon sun so its not like living in a cave and i can still open those windows for light and fresh cooler night air.
    Ive seen bubble wrap used but anything plastic or rubber or anything of that general group melts in the heat here even the heavy duty hard plastic so cardboard is easier to do on shed windows or the smaller ones you can usually get free cardboard boxes from stores and things that their produce or stock comes in and if you cut it correctly it sits inside the window so you dont need any tape or anything and its quick to remove and you can compost it in the garden when youre done using it the bigger windows are the hardest so i only have sheets on them unless they are really bad then i might splurge on a black out sheet like they used in the wars that are basically a tar acryllic paint like substance treated on sheets and taped to the window. I like that all of those are quiet inexpensive or free and are reusable for years and when you arent using them on windows can be used as other things.

    If you have small double windows with an entire frame around each side, you can use kits with small pieces of foil and cover each window seperately (left and right? These kits already come with double sided tape. I'm just hoping that the tape comes back off easily (Tesa). Previous tenants had left me a nice surprise of very sticky thick glue from insulation tape or what not, left on the windows, and I needed some very strong wax benzine to get it off the window without damaging the paint.

    Okay, so I tried the 1x2 wood frame and I could never get a a straight piece of wood from the hardware store! I found a better alternative and used a screen frame kit, cut it to the inside dimensions of the window, minus the corner connectors then used caulk to adhere the metal screen frame to the existing window frame, and used screen spline to hold the plastic in the spline channel on the screen frame. This makes a complete seal around the window and can be removed very easily by re moving the spline. The white screen frame also blends into the window and looks as if it is part of the window.

    • @TheFixerHomeRepair
      @TheFixerHomeRepair  4 года назад +10

      Hey there! I should have said in the video you should be careful removing the tape. Here is a tip... use a blow dryer to heat the tape up before you remove it. Will make it easier to remove and you will be less likely to tear the paint off with the tape. As far as using it year round, I don't see why not and I don't think it would affect mildew or condensation in a window as long as it gets sunlight and heat. That is just a guess really, never tried it. I live in the north east part of the US so about a week or two before I think I will need to turn the heat on is when I install this and when I have had the heat off for about a week at the end of the winter I will remove it. Hope this answered your questions. I really appreciate the comment and you checking out my videos!!!

    • @mfb6310
      @mfb6310 3 года назад +10

      Re condensation, simple trick: take a newspaper page, roll it lengthwise and place it up against the bottom of the window pane.. Wrap the window in plastic per the video, but make sure the paper is touching the window pane. Any condensation will roll down onto the paper, not your wood frames, and the paper will dry out at the next warm sunshine, ready for condensation again. This will soak up most if not all condensation, thus help prevent mold on the wood frame itself.

    after the winter season, how easily does the double-sided tape remove from the window sill? Does it remove any of the paint? Nice video, thanks.

    how about getting the tape off of the frame once spring hits? how much of a nightmare is that?

    What does it being tight and crystal clear do?

      Makes a tighter seal to keep out the draft

    Is window damaged by tape when wanting to remove it in Spring?

    My window is recessed and doesn't have a frame and to seal it I would have to put it directly on the wall around it, is there a better method you'd suggest?

      Hey Kaitlyn! You can put it on the wall but after the winter when you go to remove it, be careful. I would use the blow dryer to heat up the tape before you peel it. Then peel it nice and slow so you don’t peel the paint off with the tape. Hope this helps. Thanks for checking out the video!

    When you go to take this off in the summer - does it take all the paint off the windows ????

  • @dostagirl9551
    @dostagirl9551 2 года назад

    Do you leave this up until the summer? I have older wooden windows in a 1950s house and I’m trying to find a way to get them better insulated with less drafts. The previous owner did install double pane windows, but kept the wooden and badly fitting window frames themselves and looking for some solutions until I can afford to change them all out.

      You could leave this up all the time if you wanted. I just use it in the winter when I have to. It really does make a difference though! Hope the video helps. Thanks for watching!

    I wonder if it would help rolling the film on a pool noodle to avoid sticking accidentally to where you don’t want it

    I have a question: How do you use the blind?

    • @TheFixerHomeRepair
      @TheFixerHomeRepair  Год назад

      In my case you can’t. If you have blinds that are set up in front of the trim then you can install the plastic behind it and still use it.

    How do you open up the shade

    • @TheFixerHomeRepair
      @TheFixerHomeRepair  Год назад

      If you have shades that are inside mount, you would have to make the decision beforehand to whether or not you would want them open or closed during the time you had the insulation kit installed.
