    Summary:
    1- Focus on differentiating between the things that I can control, and the things that I can't control. And focus on the things that I can control.
    2. Train yourself to be systematically less prone to be overreacting to criticism.
    3. Planned poverty and suffering during specific days.

      I will add. 4.) Look at situation in its simplistic form. For instance when someone displays jealousy & envy. Be aware of the motivation, the response should be it’s the job. Don’t over complicate it. Like when they take you from a post where your extremely efficient, good & proficient. They will re define, your role so you cannot display your skills or abilities. So the Stoicism can adapt their skill or abilities to another situation & look, focus & adapt the job description

    Seneca wrote that what’s required is “confidence in yourself and the belief that you are on the right path, and not led astray by the many tracks which cross yours of people who are hopelessly lost, though some are wandering not far from the true path.”

    Stoics would also fortify themselves against the best case circumstances as well. This allowed them to avoid the painful crash that so often comes after a positive experience.

    I don't think Stoicism was initially practiced and shared "in order to get succeed", but as a way to live and die at peace. Which has been much more relevant to me for the last 20 years and which is much more appealing for the remaing ones.

    I have practiced Theravada, a formal branch of Buddhism. I can say that Buddhism and Stoicism is not opposite, even supplement to each other. In Buddhism, we have special phrase "Sankara", the fourth phase of operation process in mind. In this phase, karma is generated. Stoicism is antidote to this phase to be implemented. A great combination as Theravada application methods eliminating old Sankara accumulated before while Stoicism supporting to restrain and prevent new Sankara generated. You master your mind more efficiently.

    I tend to wear my clothes out till I really need to buy something. My family and friends have made comments that my rain jacket will never die, and my climbing shirt too... they aren't ripped (much) or smelly (at all!)
    One day my best friend got rid of the jacket when clearing out the closet.
    A have a bag too that i've used for 5 years, and still get comments from the folks when I go to see them.
    My mum asked me the other day if I feel I wished I had been aguy instead because of my shopping habits... holy moly hoy..

    Hi Tim! Thank you so much for all you've done. You literally changed my life.
    I was constantly thinking about committing suicide everyday of the week last week (it's a really tough week), but fortunately, I was able to not do it. Then today, I'm watching this video, and I thought, what will the world look like if Tim had successfully committed suicide? I bet it will never be the same.
    Sometimes I question God because I feel like I'm doing my best to be a good person, yet I kept having endless big problems. And then I realized that he could be molding me so that I become aligned for my bigger purpose. I don't yet know what that is, but I really wanna contribute to the world. What I wanna do for sure is to help my country, the Philippines. I wanted to introduce a better life for Filipinos. I wanna create more jobs and send more children to school. Thank you because you've been helping me create my startup that might change many peoples' lives. Love you, Tim!!
    I wish you good health and longer life, so you can inspire more generations.

    I like most part of the stoic philosophy, but I suspect that the reason I like it has to do with a comfortable illusion that I could focus my emotions on the things I control. I think that even if I focus my actions on the things under control, things outside my control will still have great impact in my emotions and well being.

    Stoicism is like Tao (Chinese) or the Gita (Hindu).
    I think Tim speaks this in his Tao of Seneca series?
    Tim had a degree in East Asian things right...he probably knows.
    Marcus Aurelius Musings...I think, and Seneca. It's great. The thinking is easy. I picked up the Tao.
    I'll buy Seneca's letters.
    And yes....This is great Tim. Thanks. I'll read your books more too.

    @nickhuiszoon8242 7 лет назад

    It's just expanding your comfort zone, sharpen your focus and believe in yourself even more. If you do that, you kind of separate yourself from the rest. If you practice this, in the beginning you feel kind of lonely because you change yourself and your behavior and people in your direct surroundings don't get it. Those people are attached to you in a particular way, and when you change your way of thinking and habits, you will change your old habits in to new (better) ones, and eventually loose old friends and get new friends (better ones), and you'll change your job. Maybe your girlfriend too. It's life changing But you need to discipline yourself. I've read the 4 hours work week. It's inspiring. But what I've learned the most from Tim is discipline. Without the discipline to shift your theory (thoughts/ideas/plans) into practice, you'll get nowhere.

    The Catholics have a 40 day period during the year that practices fasting, not smoking or using stimulants and helping people around you, much like Eid, a good Catholic would obviously try to put these virtues into their life generally, so it was always down to the individual, Catholicism was captured by infidels and turned into a monotheistic, overarching, ecclesiastical dictatorship and all aesthetic and spiritual people fell into "heresy". I consider myself a good Catholic and a good man because of it, and This man speaks in a language I understand. More power to you young man.

    I love Tools of Titans, and I really value Tim's appreciation of information overload- always worth while information from my TF reading and podcast time! Quick question: what are some ice breakers, or ways you have effectively introduced these ideas to people who could benefit from developing present-state awareness and more consistent well-being in their life?

    • @travisjones6991
      @travisjones6991 2 года назад +1

      Any time anyone asks you "how you stay so calm" or "how do you do it?" or something along those lines, they're breaking the ice for you. From there, tell them what you do. Don't suggest it for them directly. Just show the benefits and where you can find more information. In my experience, people respond to these teachings better if they feel like they're discovering it for themselves.
      Also, I just realized I'm replying to a five year old comment. Hope you're well!
