Passion of the Nerd did this cool livestream interview with Tim Minear, where he mentions that Gunn was the hardest character for him to write for. He actually mentions That Old Gang of Mine, which he wrote, and refers to it as "a travesty of an episode," and that he had a tough time writing the dialogue for Gunn and his gang.
I had fun watching this because when I wrote this video, I wanted to try to be delicate as I touch on the possibly troublesome optics of that episode, so it's funny to see that the guy who wrote it is very open about what he regrets about his own work.

The Angel After The Fall comic included a lot of Joss Whedon’s ideas for season 6. One of them was Gunn becoming a vampire and serving as the season’s Big Bad. I feel like that would have undone so much of his growth.

Yeah, I’ve read the After the Fall comics, and tb quite h, I was not a fan of the direction they took the Gunn and Lorne characters for the most part.
Tho I did ADORE the final scene where Angel visits Gunn and leaves him his Angel Investigations business card.

Great video. I always felt Gunn was an important part of team Angel and actually enjoyed his initial dynamic with Fred, I was so disappointed in his character in season 5, I felt everything that made him Gunn was completely gone out the window. Your video has given this change in him a perspective I hadn’t considered before

Loved listening to this character study - Gunn is such an interesting character, and so often overlooked.

Gunn took me a while to like on first watch, decades ago, but I understand him more as I grow

That’s one of the most beautiful effects of Angel’s storylines and characters, from what I’ve observed

Thank you! I love writing about this show, and the field of Buffyverse academia is so much fun to research 😎

There is a woeful lack of serious and informed analysis of "Angel" to be found online or anywhere else. The Whedon fans have scattered like roaches when the light is turned on, all because of you-know-what. I find that disappointing and, sadly, unsurprising. Cowards, (almost) all of them,
    Subbed.

How about you doing honor for Cordelia Chase?
