I find a lot of novice writers just dive head first into writing without knowing these simple basics. Even if you've been writing for a while, it's always beneficial to revisit these to make sure the core of your story is strong.

Have we met? lol, a few years ago i started writing a story, i just let it flew for a couple dozen pages before i realize i had no idea where i was going with my plot and main characters, just writing scenes that followed each other quite logically but with no global plan for it. This was really bad cause i had no notion of strucure what so ever, this channel will help a lot! And it's also useful for non-writers out there to have better understanding of movies and stories!Thank you Tyler for this clear and quality content, you just got a suscriber!
Glad finally someone said this. I am learning to write a screenplay. Got this bug only 6 months ago. Till now I didn't pen a single line on paper wrt story. Last 6 months has been a great research and I discovered so many techniques ,information and tools that are needed to write a great story. This also includes music, sound, Lighting etc.. I think many people are writing stories as they write a love letter for their young girl friend in school lollllllllllllllllllllllll .. Realize that Screenwriting is a game on the minds of audience not about your taste. Its not what you know its about what audience know.
When he said, "whether you want to write a detailed outline, or immediately sit down and start writing" he was talking about the difference between outliners & pantsers. He wasn't referring to the novice writer, that do not know what they are doing. That would make no sense.
I am that type of guy, until now, i have written so many things, and deleted all of them before even finishing it

@@khs_fan maybe anti hero is a character who wants something like hero does, like saving the world or bring peace to the world, BUT the way they do to achieve that goal is bad and horrible like murdering innocent people or something...

Best tip for creating a character: Don’t follow anything, day dream and imagine different scenes and characters until you have one that YOU love. If its new to you its new. Follow your intuition for the character despite what others think. If you love the character then the writing for that character will be good!

I always find inspiration from films etc, i should be more creative
this is an old comment but I just want to say that I daydream a lot about my stories and frequently do things that you have said. The characters are already fleshed out and have their own identity, so much so that sometimes I forget that I created them and I cherish them to bits. That being said videos like this are still helpful for me and other people who have a hard time organizing or structuring their characters and stories in their writing. For me imagining a new scene feels exciting and fun but laying them out like this in a more structured manner helps a ton in navigating the world I created, otherwise I would get nothing done! Anyway, that's just my two cents.
I do agree though that amateur writers should not get caught up following strict 'imaginary' guidelines but rather utilize these types of tools as an assistance to their world and character building.

From a psychological perspective a want derives from a need. Kinda like you _need_ food in order to survive, but maybe you _want_ to eat a specific meal like pizza.
One of the main reasons we 'like' the Joker, is because his pro-activity within the plot
the joker is a plot driven character he doesn't change but changes the world around him he just moves along with it without any change in his core

I have found that creating an engaging character that resonates with the audience through want and need is to reveal their WOUND.
In 'Finding Nemo" who doesn't identify with Marlin or with Carl in 'Up', immediately? My favourite wounded hero is Montgomery Clift in., 'A Place in the sun.'

You're right for the most part, but having a wound won't always keep the audience engaged. The worst example of a wound not being done right is the orphan villain; a one-dimensional villain that does terrible things for terrible reasons and given one scene of exposition that goes "wah I had a bad childhood"

Isn't this the same thing or at least directly related to their lie?
My favorite is Zuko from Avatar the last airbender. But they reveled what happenned to him slowly. As soon as you see him, you see his scar and you know he was vanished. But you never know why and the fact that he is got little moments when he seems pretty decent keeps you wondering "what could he have done that was so bad". Until is finally revelled in eposode 12, but he is not the one that explains it. He never talks about it or give excuses. He is blindly driven by his "want" and keep doing bad things because of it. But you also see him doing good things so you know he is a very conflicted character. As the show advance you just want to see more of him and can't help cheering for him even if he is the antagonist.
They don’t have to be relatable though

I've started writing something not a screenplay but I was intended that way, later I decided to turn it to a novel and after a while, even I know the outline and story, I somehow stuck in a place without knowing what was the problem. Now I have to sit down and write every character's desires and needs. They will act on these eventually, so the story will continue. Thanks so much!

I have learnt some of this by writing characters before but I have reached some points in writing a story with sitcom-like characters (heavy focus on characters) where I don't exactly know how the characters will behave. Hoping to be an executive coach I got an accreditation for myself. This is the first time I am able to appreciate the distinction between personality and character. You have done well by illustrating each building block with examples from movie characters. That helps immensely. When I introspect on the clients I engaged with in the past , I am able to realise the aspects I had overlooked like their false beliefs, endearing traits, towering strengths and fatal flaws. QUESTION: Why isn’t a character that is refusing to face or accept their need not compelling enough? Why do they have to pursue something actively?
If for example, the plot is the character being put in a place that
forces them to face their need without them going for a want themselves.
They are simply avoiding and not willing to confront their need.
(But the events of the story are forcing them to face their need)

This is a late reply and doesn't really answer your question, but this is exactly what I needed to read to understand this character I am writing about. He wants to keep putting criminals down and refuses help even if it's exactly what he needs due to his past where people he cared about always get killed for dragging them in the action too much. He hates working in a team to avoid getting attached and getting them hurt. So I felt the need to thank you for this, I'm really grateful :)
What would drive them to finally accept the new belief? How is their old belief ruining their lives? What would we watch/read in the mean time? until their belief is confronted? Them living their lives? "Today I went to work and finished my assignment and am now ready for my next assignment."
The main problem is it's not entertaining to consume. The goal doesn't have to be a grandiose stopping the end of the world it could be that your daughter has a dance recital that she really wants you to attend but you have a work meeting at that time. If the theme is prioritising family over work or something like that your want could be to get the best job aka Going to the work meeting but your need is to learn that family is more important.
The epiphany could come when your daughter is mad at you because you didn't come to something very important to her and you feel the negative effects of your choice. Or on the car ride to your office while alking to someone and they reccount how the children are estranged because they prioritized work over family
If you want that theme to come passively it could be something like doing work upset with difficult homelife and you go out and have the same car ride on just a normal day with nothing big going on and so when the epiphany comes you go to her recital. The problem is he was not sacrificing much not going to work so there is not much conflict or.... drama! As Tyler said you can have a story with no want but it is really hard if you want a story with drama.
Oh forgot to mention th e want of this example that I made up on the spot is attend this important work meeting

You may still be pursuing something. Maybe some ideology that keeps you from avoiding the need etc. I don’t think you can keep yourself from pursuing at any time, although the thing you want to pursue may change from one moment to the next
Well the character I pm writing has the same deeds as you explained but the deeds he chooses to follow were caused by humanity which caused him to follow this deed that puts humanity at risk, because they created a monster, and monster that may become their doom, then humanity gets mad at him for being bad when he later reveals in multiple city screens that they themselves are the cause of all of this, they themselves created me, that they're all hypocrites for being mad at me when you all should be mad at yourselves for causing me to do this. Humanity sees what he means but still chooses to not change which is the protangonist deed, to make humanity change, but can't change humanity only if he gives back their humanity.
Because nobody only has needs they must understand. We all have wants, it’s human nature. Don’t make your characters, characters. Make them human.
Also, allowing your character to have powerful wants enable the story to have a proactive approach that creates momentum heading into climax, rather than only reactive in dealing with antagonisms.

This is a great synopsis about the core principles that make up for great characters.
I like it how you also explains the interrelationships between the Want, Need, and the Lie, and not only approaches them in the big picture (the whole story) but on a scene level as well.
