@Dt Snizzley CD's and DVD'd fuck themselves up over time. But i think the game is not THAT old. Unless your legal copy is on a cd-r then it may have a nasty surprise when you try it after 10 years.
Or a spearman. There are actually a lot of classes the normal Heroes have but the custom ones don't. Also that DLC with the wolves protecting your fortress.. dang. Amaizing, and the faction, my goodness, that's totally balanced as well.

@@thespiffingbrit also you can still play the game online on gameranger. only most people play 1.09 and most of the glitches are removed in that version. but some people play 1,00 but they disable heros at the start almost always.
I remember my dad gave this to me as a birthday present, one of the first Xbox 360 games I ever owned. He hadn't played a video game since Tomb Raider on the PS1 but he was as MASSIVE Tolkien fan, so he knew everything middle-earth, which is why he bought it. If only I knew these exploits then.
I've discovered another exploit in Dragon Age: Origins, by accident because my computers a bit old. In the Circle of Magi quest line, when your party is put to sleep, and you have to escape the thrall of the sloth demon, there's the shrines that give a permanent increase to a skill point. If your computer lags, and you spam right click on the thing, you'll get a skill point for each right click when you're only supposed to be able to get 1 point from each. Find a way to consistently lag your computer in there, and you can basically get infinite skill points if you right click fast enough. Do with this as you will Spiff!
DA:O is broke as hell anways. At character creation, if you substract and add skill points in a certain order you gain infinite skill points. You see this strategy being using in speedruns.
hahahaha, the dwarfs are pretty much pure infantry and nothing else, also are tied with Isengard on the 360 version for having the lowest number of heroes...3.
Also funny fact: We actually find an exploit to kill the "Pete the pointy" exploit. Basically, it is a human-archer with oneshot capabilites (it can oneshot sauron, that has 10k HP) Basically, Pete the point is the best exploit that there is for crowd control, but the human archer exploit it's the best on hero-killing capabilities
cheap hero with smite + Eowyn is instant 1000 damage for the poor pointy. Shame he is not a bad guy, than it would be insta-kill on level 1 for half of the price.
Just FYI to people, you can get this fairly easy online with patches and such. No torrents or anything. There is a guide how to get it and install if you really want to play it, it is the version most use with the expansion to play MP.

I've seen lot of guides on youtube on how to download bme2, downloaded it but the game wouldn't open up, I think it did 1 time and kept crashing, which guide is the best way to download it without any problems?

Spiff, here's a perfeclty balanced suggestion for this game: The Wizard custom hero has an ability called "turn enemy" that allows him to turn enemy troops to your side, and at level 10 it becomes permanent. Pretty neat huh? Thing is, turned units do not count towards the command point limit, so this means you can effectively steal entire enemy armies without any repercussions!
My favorite exploit back in multiplayer on the 360 was having a hero that could convert enemy units to your side (I think Wormtongue and custom heroes could do this). If I recall correctly, converted enemy units still counted towards your opponent's command point limit. Steal units, put them out of danger, rinse and repeat until your enemy cannot produce anymore units.
Didn't know It still counted toward their command points, but One thing i know Is that wormtongue can ACTUALLY convert Heroes. And that's not even an exploit, the description of the Power says It xD (Btw i think they patched the thing you are talking about bc It doesn't seem to work. What you CAN do thought Is having an army larger that you are supposed to and make the enemy with a weak PC Crash.)

That exploit of activating an ability than clicking elsewhere before the animation triggers works for so many things. It even works for Sauron basic Mace swing. Usually he swings his Mace super slow (like once every few seconds), but if you activate it then click off your can spam it again and again, essentially tripling his rate of attack.
Historically speaking, pineapples used to be a symbol of wealth because of how expensive they were. Then Dole came along and flooded the supply aspect of pineapple economics, for better or worse.
I love how overpowered archers can be in this game, especially in siege maps. I remember just rushing the archery range upgrades in Helms Deep, setting up 3-4 Ithillien Rangers with flaming arrows, and watch them destroy hordes upon hordes of Brutal Goblins

Good Afternoon Sir Spiff. I have come to you with a weary heart. Last night I was in a state of intoxication and found this video randomly amongst my suggested list, and while i waited for today to watch it I was hoping that you might be talking about the massive balance in this game. Back to the present and while it is true that Pete the Pointy is quite broken there is one more perfectly balanced thing (or at least the one that I know of) that still exists and you haven't addressed. I remember this from back when we used to throw LAN parties for this game and each skirmish would last around 2 hours or so in a 8 player map. The perfectly balanced thing that I am talking about is the "Human Captain of Gondor" Custom Hero. When you are creating such hero, make sure to get the horse-rider ability and then max out your Spear Throw with whatever other spells you would like such as Elendil or Shout. The thing is that Improved Spear Throw (level 2) will instantly vaporize any other Hero unit on the map. This includes Sauron or Galadriel whom you can one-shot with it on level 4 and deal ridiculous amounts of damage to on level 3. Please make another video on this game. I will not give up on my nostalgia for this game.
Still played via gameranger and developed via modding community. Including purely balance mods like 2.02. Though I don't think people actually turn on custom heroes option. + Also you'd want artillery only for recently buffed dwarves.
Oh this is actually my favourite game, loved it since a child. Wish it wasnt abandonwere. Absolute classic with an epicly too long DLC name: "The Lord of the rings 2 battle for middle earth Rise of the witchking"
Spiff, there is a better exploit. Did you know that you can mix abilities from different races in this game? It's simple. Create a character that you want to play, then create a character of the race you the abilities from (make sure they end up next to each other in the hero selection screen in the creation option. Then simply start on the character you want to steal from, then press the up or down key to go to your main character, but before it loads press enter or space. This will let you pick a pick abilities from the wanted mix. If you are really cleaver you can fill an entire kit with level 10 abilities. (FYI, works with the same race too XD)
You can still play this online with the Gameranger client, I just checked, it actually seems pretty vibrant, there's a good bunch of rooms (a page or 2).

Wizards are my favorite heroes in this game for one reason. You can mass teleport bombs into your opponent's base and then kamikaze fireball them to set them all off for massive destruction. It's amazing.

Helms Deep, War of the Ring as the Elves. Stack Mirkwood Archers on the wall and wait for the enemy to surrender. Start all archers on the left side of the wall, move em to the right, and force stop em on the middle rise. It makes it so anything that any one archer can target, all the archers can target at the same time. Mirkwood Archers also have homing arrows and are invisible (and therefore ignored) while standing still. The enemy will march its entire army up to the gates, they'll all die from archer fire, and then surrender.
yeah i i used to play the original version as well and there were no all these overpower things and you couldnt make your own hero, best hero was saruman and he costed 10k to purchace
I just found your channel like a month ago and I have started working my way through your videos and this video brings back memories (and you posted it on my birthday hahaha). Another hero exploit you could do is giving any hero any of the abilities at any level (kinda). What I mean by kinda is you could make the hero have all level 10 abilities so they would have 5 lvl 10 abilities but they wouldn't be able to use any of them till they reached level 10. Also, fully upgraded Mirkwood archers would decimate anything, they essentially had exploding arrows and it was nutty. Anyway, I know you probably won't see this but thanks for making this! It was also great seeing the community create tower defense maps that you could play on the online servers against AI. It was awesome. Cheers!
RuudDevil still makes content of this game. If people are truly interested there is a small but still kicking number of content creators that still play it. There are even custom maps and such that they use..
I remember that when you upgraded the elven fortress enough (with the special arrows) it's basically impossible for anyone to beat it. I remember all 3 AIs throwing all they had at me but nope. The silver arrows killed balrog, sauron, all heroes and a dragon in about 4 seconds lol

I'd like to know where Pete the Pointy was when all the stuff in LotR went on. Really, how many people died because he wasn't around? Could the people of Middle-Earth not manage to get all the Yorkshire Gold Tea he required as payment for his services? XD
Around the time I was 8yo I was getting more into videogames and LOTR. My dad being a Tolkien fan and for the most part interested in trying PC games showed up with BFME 2 one day in 06 and we became obsessed. Every chance we could get was spent playing BFME 2, taking turns since we only had one PC. Me being a kid I set up easy scenarios for myself to play and win but he actually practiced playing the game. He would handicap himself in skirmish and fight multiple brutal AI and come out victorious and had played all of the WOTR scenarios to the point of it being easy. Would even challenge himself by restricting to certain units or having just one builder in a game. He never could grasp FPS's, other RTS games or open world/RPG games, etc but this one just clicked. I had never seen him be that dedicated with a videogame before and I haven't seen that since then. Part of the reason BFME 2 is special to me and one of my favorites games ever.
The real answer is greed from publishers. The design of modern games isn't to make the best and most enjoyable player experience possible, but to extract as much money from the player base as possible though the use of manipulative game design to make people buy microtransactions.
And even if that game was rereleased now you'd probably have the goblins and dwarves being dlc factions and there would be maps you could buy on the store with middle earth tokens or whatever.
We need more of this game, there is so many exploits in this One minor one i noticed is that certain heroes like Sauron can attack twice as fast if you attack the enemy just as they lose health
Damn this game takes me back. My main exploit in this game was on those maps where one person starts with a massive fortress and everybody gangs up on them. You can position archers on the walls by the gates and the Ai will just run into them and die, and level up the archers hella until they can murder everything.
If you use an ability right before leveling up and the levelup upgrades your ability, it just cancels the cooldown and it is treated like a new ability. If you set the abilities right, you can do just one whirlwind or similar mass destruction abilities after the other. The use of this knowledge has ended in many Lan Party Sessions in a ragequit to this day. There is also a glitch where you can somehow combine the Perks of many different types of heroes when editing
Another glitch I'm not sure if this has already been said in the comments. You can mix and match hero abilities in this game, where you gift a melee hero weapon swap, or an archer the knight abilities. I'm not entirely sure about how this works anymore, but you're supposed to glitch this by abusing the create hero menu, you create 2 heroes, mark 1 in the menu, and swap to the other hero class (with the keyboard, I think), which is already created. Glitching the desired hero to be able to for example get multiple max level abilites.
I remember making heroes this way, with 10 different abilities, of wich 5 were passives like archery, or the dwarf passive for more health, and then skills like heal, superior spear throw, improved coerce, teleport, bombardment... Yeah, the hero was expensive af but utterly broken
Yeah, this was the glitch that everyone used back in the day. You could come up with some really busted power combinations which would allow you to one-shot any unit in the game, including Sauron, or create reinforcement troops which were unstoppable invincible juggernauts.
DUDE! You have to THINK when making your hero. An Elven archer with no vision buff is pretty useless. Both canned heroes Legolas and Thranduil (ESPECIALLY Thrandiuil) can hit targets miles away. That's what you want. So while it's tempting to jack up their hit points so they can take a lot of punishment, you need to jack up their vision because they can hide in the woods anyway and just pick off EVERYTHING with a ton of vision.
Hey Spiff, I was playing total war 3 kingdoms as the leader Zheng Jiang and made my first tributary state after only somewhat leveling up my infamy and building 2 or so tributary buildings, but I started getting 30k gold a turn, eventually as I made 2 more or so tributary states, I was making more gold than I was able to spend in a turn. Don't know if you would be interested in that, but Zheng Jiang, while she has the hardest starting situation of any leader in the game, if you can survive long enough to force an enemy to pay tribute, you won't ever need to worry about gold again.
I grew up playing this game and Miss it so much. I lost the game disc like 14 years ago and gaming just hasn’t regained the same outstanding quality that that game projected. I remember living out my LOTR dreams. I’d send an army out to meet the enemy with a hero and then go into first person as the hero and that level of accuracy and scale that was present. I have not yet seen any modern game handle hundreds to thousands of units all at once and still looking that smooth. And this was before graphics really got good.

There’s a lot of things in my life that I’m not sure how I got into them. Examples like gaming, sports, hobbies Etc. but without a single doubt in my mind, this game made me love RTS and got me into RTS gaming. This video is a nostalgia bomb that literally gave me goosebumps!

This game is such a throwback for me! I remember that at one point I was in the top 100 players for ranked 1v1 online. The custom maps people made were incredibly fun too, where you could use your custom heroes.

@Karl Quetzacoatl There's a bug in the game where you can duplicate the ring when it's dropped. If you were playing with multiple people and one side got the ring, this effectively meant that said side could pump out multiple ring heroes. I would tell you how it's done, but I haven't played this game in 3-5 years, so I forgot just how you were able to do it.
Do the immortal Urukhai berzerker bug. From what I remember, it is triggered when you kill the unit with fire arrows which sometimes causes the unit to not die and proceeds to kill everything on the map, eventually.

My favorite exploit back in multiplayer on the 360 was having a hero that could convert enemy units to your side (I think Wormtongue and custom heroes could do this). If I recall correctly, converted enemy units still counted towards your opponent's command point limit. Steal units, put them out of danger, rinse and repeat until your enemy cannot produce anymore units.
OMG that exploit is amazing. Heck you can even just run them right into a fort for free resources.

Didn't know It still counted toward their command points, but One thing i know Is that wormtongue can ACTUALLY convert Heroes. And that's not even an exploit, the description of the Power says It xD

That exploit of activating an ability than clicking elsewhere before the animation triggers works for so many things. It even works for Sauron basic Mace swing. Usually he swings his Mace super slow (like once every few seconds), but if you activate it then click off your can spam it again and again, essentially tripling his rate of attack.

Historically speaking, pineapples used to be a symbol of wealth because of how expensive they were. Then Dole came along and flooded the supply aspect of pineapple economics, for better or worse.

I love how overpowered archers can be in this game, especially in siege maps. I remember just rushing the archery range upgrades in Helms Deep, setting up 3-4 Ithillien Rangers with flaming arrows, and watch them destroy hordes upon hordes of Brutal Goblins
In my childhood I had 1 hour pc-time per week, and I did exactly that with the same save file for literally months
To be fair... archers on top of a wall are quite op in real live as well...

When I was young a friend of mine invited me to play against him on Helms Deep while he had elves, I havent spoken to him since.
back in the internet cafe days i made this game famous at my town.. everyone was playing it because of me and another friend considering one of the worst bullies became my friend because of the game is crazy to think about...anyway everyone was noob back then but because i was learning i was always one step above everyone else !!! i was trashing everyone even one day i got 3 vs 1 and still won... that archer on the walls thing was broken in patch 1.00 but patch 1.06 damn :D

Good Afternoon Sir Spiff. I have come to you with a weary heart. Last night I was in a state of intoxication and found this video randomly amongst my suggested list, and while i waited for today to watch it I was hoping that you might be talking about the massive balance in this game. Back to the present and while it is true that Pete the Pointy is quite broken there is one more perfectly balanced thing (or at least the one that I know of) that still exists and you haven't addressed. I remember this from back when we used to throw LAN parties for this game and each skirmish would last around 2 hours or so in a 8 player map.
The perfectly balanced thing that I am talking about is the "Human Captain of Gondor" Custom Hero. When you are creating such hero, make sure to get the horse-rider ability and then max out your Spear Throw with whatever other spells you would like such as Elendil or Shout. The thing is that Improved Spear Throw (level 2) will instantly vaporize any other Hero unit on the map. This includes Sauron or Galadriel whom you can one-shot with it on level 4 and deal ridiculous amounts of damage to on level 3. Please make another video on this game. I will not give up on my nostalgia for this game.
There's also a game called Lord of the rings: conquest. It's basically just LOTR battlefront. It's rediculously fun
best part about that game? play as an assassin on the shire map, all enemy archers are hobbits and they have a unquie backstabbing animation

Spiff, there is a better exploit. Did you know that you can mix abilities from different races in this game?
It's simple. Create a character that you want to play, then create a character of the race you the abilities from (make sure they end up next to each other in the hero selection screen in the creation option. Then simply start on the character you want to steal from, then press the up or down key to go to your main character, but before it loads press enter or space. This will let you pick a pick abilities from the wanted mix.
If you are really cleaver you can fill an entire kit with level 10 abilities. (FYI, works with the same race too XD)
You can still play this online with the Gameranger client, I just checked, it actually seems pretty vibrant, there's a good bunch of rooms (a page or 2).
Tom Bombadil is a canon character from Lord of the Rings, you know, the books? Remember the books Spiff? Also, yes, if you captured the ring and you were the elves, Galadriel would be the one to wear it.
Also he is supposed to be incredibly overpowered, some people even theorize he is a Maia.

Wizards are my favorite heroes in this game for one reason. You can mass teleport bombs into your opponent's base and then kamikaze fireball them to set them all off for massive destruction. It's amazing.

Helms Deep, War of the Ring as the Elves. Stack Mirkwood Archers on the wall and wait for the enemy to surrender. Start all archers on the left side of the wall, move em to the right, and force stop em on the middle rise. It makes it so anything that any one archer can target, all the archers can target at the same time. Mirkwood Archers also have homing arrows and are invisible (and therefore ignored) while standing still. The enemy will march its entire army up to the gates, they'll all die from archer fire, and then surrender.
I used to play the LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth (not II) all the time when I was little! This made me get nostalgic god damn it

I just found your channel like a month ago and I have started working my way through your videos and this video brings back memories (and you posted it on my birthday hahaha). Another hero exploit you could do is giving any hero any of the abilities at any level (kinda). What I mean by kinda is you could make the hero have all level 10 abilities so they would have 5 lvl 10 abilities but they wouldn't be able to use any of them till they reached level 10.
Also, fully upgraded Mirkwood archers would decimate anything, they essentially had exploding arrows and it was nutty. Anyway, I know you probably won't see this but thanks for making this! It was also great seeing the community create tower defense maps that you could play on the online servers against AI. It was awesome. Cheers!
RuudDevil still makes content of this game. If people are truly interested there is a small but still kicking number of content creators that still play it. There are even custom maps and such that they use..

I remember that when you upgraded the elven fortress enough (with the special arrows) it's basically impossible for anyone to beat it. I remember all 3 AIs throwing all they had at me but nope. The silver arrows killed balrog, sauron, all heroes and a dragon in about 4 seconds lol

Around the time I was 8yo I was getting more into videogames and LOTR. My dad being a Tolkien fan and for the most part interested in trying PC games showed up with BFME 2 one day in 06 and we became obsessed.
Every chance we could get was spent playing BFME 2, taking turns since we only had one PC. Me being a kid I set up easy scenarios for myself to play and win but he actually practiced playing the game. He would handicap himself in skirmish and fight multiple brutal AI and come out victorious and had played all of the WOTR scenarios to the point of it being easy. Would even challenge himself by restricting to certain units or having just one builder in a game.
He never could grasp FPS's, other RTS games or open world/RPG games, etc but this one just clicked. I had never seen him be that dedicated with a videogame before and I haven't seen that since then. Part of the reason BFME 2 is special to me and one of my favorites games ever.

Why dont they make awesome games like these anymore? Imagine if gaming actually got better since 2006.
The real answer is greed from publishers. The design of modern games isn't to make the best and most enjoyable player experience possible, but to extract as much money from the player base as possible though the use of manipulative game design to make people buy microtransactions.
And even if that game was rereleased now you'd probably have the goblins and dwarves being dlc factions and there would be maps you could buy on the store with middle earth tokens or whatever.

One minor one i noticed is that certain heroes like Sauron can attack twice as fast if you attack the enemy just as they lose health
Damn this game takes me back. My main exploit in this game was on those maps where one person starts with a massive fortress and everybody gangs up on them. You can position archers on the walls by the gates and the Ai will just run into them and die, and level up the archers hella until they can murder everything.
If you use an ability right before leveling up and the levelup upgrades your ability, it just cancels the cooldown and it is treated like a new ability. If you set the abilities right, you can do just one whirlwind or similar mass destruction abilities after the other. The use of this knowledge has ended in many Lan Party Sessions in a ragequit to this day. There is also a glitch where you can somehow combine the Perks of many different types of heroes when editing
Another glitch I'm not sure if this has already been said in the comments.
You can mix and match hero abilities in this game, where you gift a melee hero weapon swap, or an archer the knight abilities. I'm not entirely sure about how this works anymore, but you're supposed to glitch this by abusing the create hero menu, you create 2 heroes, mark 1 in the menu, and swap to the other hero class (with the keyboard, I think), which is already created. Glitching the desired hero to be able to for example get multiple max level abilites.
I remember that one, you could make some insane heros
I remember making heroes this way, with 10 different abilities, of wich 5 were passives like archery, or the dwarf passive for more health, and then skills like heal, superior spear throw, improved coerce, teleport, bombardment...
Yeah, the hero was expensive af but utterly broken
Yeah, this was the glitch that everyone used back in the day. You could come up with some really busted power combinations which would allow you to one-shot any unit in the game, including Sauron, or create reinforcement troops which were unstoppable invincible juggernauts.

DUDE! You have to THINK when making your hero. An Elven archer with no vision buff is pretty useless. Both canned heroes Legolas and Thranduil (ESPECIALLY Thrandiuil) can hit targets miles away. That's what you want. So while it's tempting to jack up their hit points so they can take a lot of punishment, you need to jack up their vision because they can hide in the woods anyway and just pick off EVERYTHING with a ton of vision.
Hey Spiff, I was playing total war 3 kingdoms as the leader Zheng Jiang and made my first tributary state after only somewhat leveling up my infamy and building 2 or so tributary buildings, but I started getting 30k gold a turn, eventually as I made 2 more or so tributary states, I was making more gold than I was able to spend in a turn. Don't know if you would be interested in that, but Zheng Jiang, while she has the hardest starting situation of any leader in the game, if you can survive long enough to force an enemy to pay tribute, you won't ever need to worry about gold again.
What could be better: Spiff and LOTR in a same video! And a hot cup of tea in my hand! My life is complete!

I grew up playing this game and Miss it so much. I lost the game disc like 14 years ago and gaming just hasn’t regained the same outstanding quality that that game projected. I remember living out my LOTR dreams. I’d send an army out to meet the enemy with a hero and then go into first person as the hero and that level of accuracy and scale that was present. I have not yet seen any modern game handle hundreds to thousands of units all at once and still looking that smooth. And this was before graphics really got good.
You can play this online with Gameranger. I still play this with the expansion and the Edain mod. And it all works in multiplayer!

This game is such a throwback for me! I remember that at one point I was in the top 100 players for ranked 1v1 online. The custom maps people made were incredibly fun too, where you could use your custom heroes.
The biggest exploit is how you managed to get the game running on windows 10....really dude how did you do that?

@Karl Quetzacoatl There's a bug in the game where you can duplicate the ring when it's dropped. If you were playing with multiple people and one side got the ring, this effectively meant that said side could pump out multiple ring heroes.
I would tell you how it's done, but I haven't played this game in 3-5 years, so I forgot just how you were able to do it.
Just have to say, BFME2 is one of my favorite games of all time. Thanks for covering it!
Do the immortal Urukhai berzerker bug. From what I remember, it is triggered when you kill the unit with fire arrows which sometimes causes the unit to not die and proceeds to kill everything on the map, eventually.
It´s normal that they go apeshit when you kill them.

The Original game used to ask if you wanted to download game ranger when you were installing it, EA didn't have dedicated servers for BFME2
For a guy who is near his mid-50s and hasnt played a computer game in re 30 yrs and recently purchased this game, this seems to be exactly what i need to get the hang of games again. Thanks for the heads up 🙂
