    Great video, very helpful.
Thanks so much for the English version, really appreciated.
Will check out your episodes to see how the problem with your car was resolved

Great job on the starter rebuild, however not surprised that this wasn’t the cause. My suspicion is either a dry start (oil circulation is poor at start up at those temps), or idler pulley bearing.

Idler pulley. Good idea! Thx. Maybe it’s not the starter at all!

Sounded very much like the starter motor, maybe change the complete starter motor for a new one. Love your videos 👍

Like 1BCamden said check the idler pulley bearing and every other bearing the serpentine belt drives. The bearings don't have enough grease when new, and after 18 years I'm sure there is no grease and the bearings are worn-out. When you start the car the bearing are cold and the ball bearings are a smaller size at -6 degrees and as they warm up and expand a little the noise is gone. Give it a go take the belt off and check the bearings, it will , make another great video.

I will replace all this summer. Definitely needs to be done due to age. Thx for the response.

Great episode, and detail regarding sizes and method, thanks really appreciated.
I dropped one of the 13mm nuts for the bracket and it ended up under the transmission CPU 😐 took longer to recover the nut (had to remove the CPU) than it took to change the starter.
It is possible in my case that the solenoid terminal nut had been damaged in the past (Volvo dealership) and was loose, resulting in an intermittent failure to start issue. But I had the OEM starter, so I fitted it (AUD350.00 cheap) as my C30T5 has 180K/Kms on the odometer.
For what it’s worth, your issue sounds like an idler pulley
    Best regards Stanley

It was not the starter. But thee is a good video at least on how to get to it.

I have the smaller 2.4 Liter 5 cylinder engine, I also have that noise during colder temperatures. I never thought it would be the starter. But in my research I found that noise commonly happening (also in other engines) when the throttle valve doesn't immediately open up when the engine is started. That happens if it has that kind of age (doesn't have anything to do with mileage). When it's cold it can happen that the valve doesn't open so easily. So maybe just take out the throttle valve and clean it, otherwise just don't mind it and let it be.

It would be strange if the sound was coming from the starter with such low mileage. Maybe a drive belt? Thanks for filming it though as it will come in handy when the starter goes on my 2009 c70. That air-box though! 👍

I had the same problem. I had it a long time ago. It was the generator belt or the generator clutch. Bec it was so long time ago cant remember which one.

Great job as allways!! Do your petrol car have some sound in from the alternator wheel like your xc70?

Is the wire disconnected at 7:30 really "the negative lead", or is it the positive lead that engages the starter solenoid?

My S40 T5 have the same issue. Cold start belongs 4 or 5 seconds. Warm start is fast.

I would removed the serpentine belt and start the car. If it goes away, it provides a starting point.

Well i think the starter is not the problem in this case. It might be any other bearing.

Hello , even when you not succeed, great job 👏 the modern T-5 engines are really tricky and somehow not designed for DIY, may this isn’t the starter.. may the rpm sensor is given a wrong signal, so that the doesn’t know, that the engine is running and is to late to push back? 🇸🇪 🇷🇺 🚗 🇨🇦 🇩🇪

It's not the starter. Maybe it is a worn out belt...
