Carol King is a once in a lifetime writer. EVERYONE owned Tapestry. She was an epic writer
Tapestry is one of the best albums ever.
Even before Carole became a singer, she and her former husband wrote tons of hit songs in the 50s and 60s. Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Take Good Care of My Baby, Go Away Little Girl, Up On The Roof, One Fine Day, You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman, and more. They wrote the song "Loco-Motion" for their babysitter, Little Eva.
Neil Sedaka wrote the song "Oh! Carol" about her, because they dated in high school.
The musical "Beautiful" is about her.
I saw her in a concert in Frankfurt, Germany, when I was in the Air Force and stationed over there. She dedicated "So Far Away" to us American military members.
I recommend "I Feel The Earth Move".
Tapestry was a HUGE success. "I Feel the Earth Move" next, please.
It's difficult to fully appreciate Carole King with one song. Her body of work tells her story. I'd do "I feel the Earth Move" or "So Far Away" next.

Before putting out her own album, Carol wrote so many hit songs for other artist in the 60's. Her work with James Taylor are fantastic.
And think one of the reasons why she took so long to make her own album, cause I heard she thought she couldn't sing?!!, she thought she just had the talent to write for others. I said this before, but im glad she got over that, or this classic album would have never been.

So many iconic songs written by her. It’s a deep rabbit hole. She wrote so many hits in the 1960’s for different groups. The Brill Building writers created so many songs. Never get tired of this album.
If you were in a college dorm in the early 1970's, there were 3 albums playing in every room: CSN, Sweet Baby James, and Tapestry.
"Jazzman" may be my favorite of all Carole's recordings. The song is pure joy.
There is a Broadway Musical based on her life, called Beautiful.
"I Feel the Earth Move" is a percussive, compelling tune that just never gets old. I can't recommend it highly enough for you!

The entire album is almost a greatest hits album. Almost every song was released as a single eventually. Carol held back "You've Got A Friend" so her good friend and road buddy could record it first.
My two favorite singer/songwriters of the early 1970s were James Taylor and Carole King. Carole King wrote “You’ve Got A Friend”. They both sang it well but James Taylor’s version became the most famous! That is an iconic song! You need to hear it by both artists! Every song on her tapestry album is great! You should eventually listen to all of them!!

King's major success began in the 1960's when she & her first husband Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits for other artists. Her solo "Tapestry" record is one of the all time biggest selling albums. Lots of great songs such as "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", "You've Got A Friend", "I Feel The Earth Move", "Where You Lead" etc.
To be Clear "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" [Gerry Goffin/Carole King] was her own remake of the Shirelles' Hit from 1960, slowed down into a ballad.
You've Got A Friend is one of the greatest songs ever written IMO

Carole King is so special to me because of the hit she wrote Will You Love Me Tomorrow. The Shirelles made this a hit for them and they are from my hometown Passaic, NJ. I saw the play Beautiful about the story of her life. It was more than awesome. Carole King is a national treasure and RIP her ex-husband Gerry Goffin. Please take note that she plays piano herself on ALL of her songs.

You asked how two songs could be #1 at the same time. I’m not sure they could, but remember, in 1971 a single was literally a single on Vinyl, with an A side and a B side.
The reason is because lou adler released its to late and on the flip side put I feel the earth move. Disc jockeys loved and played both sides .fyi.
She was a great songwriter before she was a popular singer. She co-wrote Loco-Motion by Grand Funk (and others), Up on the Roof by the Drifters, Into Something Good by Herman's Hermits, and Pleasant Valley Sunday by the Monkees, and so many more! I suggest So Far Away on Tapestry next, but honestly, you need to dive into the entire album if you're liking it so far. Not a bad song on there. And after this, I highly suggest "Bitter with the Sweet off her album Rhymes & Reasons. Great bass line.

You are correct about where the album cover art comes from; the photos were taken at her Laurel Canyon CA home. She now lives in Idaho. My favorite songs by her are "Up on the Roof" (originally recorded by The Drifters and sung by King on the "Writer" album) and "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" (originally recorded by The Shirelles and sung by King on "Tapestry").

You've Got a Friend was actually covered by James Taylor. You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman was covered by Aretha Franklin. Both of these songs from Tapestry were big hits. So she not only had hits off this album with her singing them but hits that were covers by other artists. The album was on the charts for 6 years. It's the first album I every bought.
She is one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time. She has written so many songs recorded by others that would amaze you. One of my 5 favorite artists

Carol King is one of the all-time greats but don't get carried away. There's this guy called Paul McCartney who actually is the greatest songwriter (by any criteria you care to choose to measure by).

Great decision on always listening to this studio version, after all that's the version that made them famous. There are an incredible amount of soft rock hits, Motown and classic rock hits in the 60s & 70s.
Carole King great singer/songwriter. A lot of great singers had hits with her songs. This album instantly brings back memories of the 70’s.
It's a very 70's feel all around including the attitude around relationships. This was how we lived back then before HIV/AIDS killed that free if you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with attitude.

My favorite album of the time. I listened to her Tapestry album until it wore out. You'd be surprised at some of the songs that you know that were written by her. I was introduced to her album by my best friend's older sister. I was 11 at the time going on 12. I listened to that album for years and I still listen to it. Love Carol King . You should listen to the whole album. ✌❤😎

I’m GenX and was raised by hippy adjacent parents in the 70s-80s who sadly had shitty and limited musical taste - but their friends had the good stuff.
I remember Carol King playing a lot at a family friend’s house but never knew the name just that I loved the music. In my 20s I found Tapestry at a record store and recognized the song titles on the back and realized I had found that lady with the friendly voice and sick songs.
I used to play that shit on repeat in the tape deck of my old Toyota and now have her in my phone library for bike rides.
So good.
Carol King is recolonized as the best and most successful female songwriter of ALL time, writing first between her and her first husband Garry Goldfein, she composed the music and he wrote the lyrics, and in 1970 she became a solo artist/singer/songwriter having several #-1's, besides that she wrote several other hits for various other famous artists since 1959.
She was active until she retired in 2012 at 71yo, She's worth over $100-million.

Tapestry was an album that EVERYONE had and played non stop back in the day. King wrote sooo many hits and her work and performances are fantastic. A lot of artists owe some of their success to her songwriting! Fact: I was listening to THIS (very album) in the car today! Ha! It does NOT get old, very singable, relatable music decades later.
For someone who lived this album when it hit the charts, this song can bring you to tears. I bought the cassette tape of this for my brother for Christmas 1971 when he was in college. The 60s and 70s had some really great songs.
SUMMER of 71, I was 12. This song was totally all over the airwaves! I loved it. Of course the entire album is EXCELLENT! I bought the album, 8 track, then cassette, and finally the CD!! LOL. 20 + years after it came out, you could walk into any record store, and it was thier on the shelf!!

Carole King and Carly Simon are two of the greatest women artists of all time. Others have already mentioned other songs of theirs, but please do a deep dive on both of them. You will not be disappointed. Carole also did the theme song for the movie "A League of Their Own".
It makes me happy to see this reaction of Carole King. I discovered Carole King with the album "Tapestry" in 1971, amazing album and an amazing lady she is. For me the best album ever...later on I have bought about 10 later albums as well...and she have always been a treasure for me.

My daughter just loved The first song on the LP If you could imagine three or four elementary school girls playing air piano in the back jamming out with Carol as she pounds the keys it just has memories I'll never forget for me
Carole King is in the Hall of Fame twice verse for singing and second for writing songs she actually started writing for Motown her babysitter Little Eva saying one of her songs that she wrote called The Locomotion it was a huge hit react to it by Little Eva

At A&M records in January 1971, Carol King was working on her debut album (Tapestry) in studio B, Joni Mitchell was working on her second album (Blue) in studio C, and The Carpenters were working on their 3rd album (The Carpenters) in studio A.
This was all at what was once Charlie Chaplin's Studios, and it's now the Jim Henson Company studios. There was so much history made in those buildings.

7th grade, the songs from this album began coming out of my radio, and I was entranced. I hadn't yet discovered the other female singers and songwriters that I've since come to love along with her. In an odd twist, I was loving her in contrast to the "girl groups" of the 60s...some of whom were probably popular from singing songs she'd written when she was a studio writer. She also was friends with James Taylor, and wrote one of his biggest hits, You've Got a Friend, a song that is also on this Tapestry album of hers.
No, the song from the movie you're thinking of; "you've got a friend in me..." is by Randy Newman, not Carol.

You've got a friend was written by Carol King, except it was additionally sang by James Taylor at the same time, which was in 1971, four years after I was born.
I love this album even if I was born a decade more than when this was released. So much so that I flew to NYC (from Asia) to watch the Broadway show 'Beautiful' which is Carole King's life story and a lot of songs in Tapestry are in the show.

What you could do is listen to Fire and Rain from James Taylor first and then do You've got a Friend from Carole King. James Taylor's song is about a friend he lost and his trouble with addiction. When Carol heard that she wrote her song as an answer to James.
Smackwater Jack is a great and fun song, but So Far Away and (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman are awesome, the latter one being a HUGE hit for Arethra Franklin, which is why she did that song at the Kennedy Center Honors.
Another song off this album, You've Got A Friend is interesting in that, she let James Taylor, who was a long time friend and collaborator, release the song first ... to great success, and although I like her version, I LOVE his version. I feel, to really understand just how much she contributed to and affected the music industry, you owe it to yourself to react to his version, or at least listen to it. He actually only did it because he had learned it from playing on her version, and back at the studio, they would play it as a warm up song. When they determined that they were short a song for HIS album, it was suggested that he do that one on his album. So, he asked for her permission, and she agreed ... HISTORY !!! I think, if you listen to both, you'll understand why I prefer his version more.
James Taylor is not the exception, and Carole was used to writing for other artists. She has contributed more than 400 songs to the industry, and many, MANY of them have been covered by other artists. In fact, over 1,000 of them have and many have gone on to become huge hits.
She wrote The Locomotion for her babysitter, Little Eva (#1), which in turn, was covered famously by many, many others like Grand Funk Railroad (#1), Kylie Minogue #3), and interestingly enough (as depicted by their names), ALL THREE (3) hit the top 10 on the charts with it.
She wrote Up On The Roof for the Drifters, which in 1963, reached number 5 on the U.S. pop singles chart and number 4 on the U.S. R&B singles chart.
The song, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman hit #8 on the charts for Arethra Franklin.
She wrote the song, Pleasant Valley Sunday, which was a HUGE hit for The Monkees, reaching #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and US Cash Box 100 charts, but #1 on the Canada RPM chart. #2 in New Zealand and #4 in Norway.

On the singles - "It's Too Late" was the A side and "I Feel the Earth Move" was its B side. Same with "So Far Away" and "Smackwater Jack." Singles were released on small 45rpm records that had one song on each side.
Tapestry was also the first album released to receive Diamond certification, though it wasn't the first awarded.
I Feel the Earth Move was the flip side of the It's too Late single-both songs were so good that it was deemed a double sided hit single with DJ's playing both sides when it came out. Back in the day if you had a record collection-you had this album. Might as well listen to all the tracks-this album is that good.
