For those of you guys planning on buying the Dell XPS 15, I'll give you my experience over the past 5 months of using this laptop. I needed a new laptop to study mechanical engineering in university. I was deciding between the Macbook Pro with the M1 chip or the Dell XPS 15. But after reading and watching hundreds of reviews online about how XPS 15 and Mac are basically the same, XPS is better for gaming, and how Mac is bad for ME, I decided to get the Dell XPS 15 in March. PROS. - The laptop arrived three weeks after I ordered it-- It was estimated to take 5 weeks, but I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived two weeks early. - The keys are extremely satisfying to press--which allowed me to get a lot of work done simply because I was addicted to tapping the keys. - The screen is very wide and filling--allows you to focus on everything you are working on. - Battery life--I could watch twitch streams for 6 hours straight and the laptop would still have around 55~60% (from 100%). - Dongle. USB and HDMI dongle included with the laptop. CONS. - The trackpad. Every time I left-click using the trackpad, it feels as though the bottom of the trackpad is getting stuck to some type of glue and once I lift my finger off the trackpad, the trackpad lifts off the glue and leaves this distasteful sound. I found this problem straight from when I unboxed the laptop. - 2 weeks after purchasing the XPS 15, the screen started having issues. If you divide the screen into 4 sections, the bottom right side has a constant noticeable flickering. I tried doing everything to fix it but it just wouldn't go away. Every single time the laptop goes into sleep mode or I shut it off and reboot it, this same problem persists. After awhile, I simply gave up and started ignoring the flickering. (Only thing I have noticed that helps is plugging in the charger and using the device for one or two hours and the flickering gradually fades away.) - Screen freezes every now and then. This has occurred around once a week for every week since March--when I first got the XPS 15. - In-built camera. Very crummy resolution. - Ports+dongles. There is a high-pitched whirring sound that does not go away if a dongle is plugged in. This problem does not persist if there is no dongle. However, as a ME student and gamer, I almost always use a mouse that is connected to the laptop. - Speakers/sound system produce momentary static if I use them for the first time of the day. -Customer service. Basically inexistent. I moved to a different country (for university) after buying the laptop, and Dell told me that I couldn't get any help if I wasn't in the country it was delivered to. Even with the warranty, I am basically guaranteed nothing. - League of Legends Gaming. The bottom half of the entire screen lags hard. It wasn't there for the first couple of weeks, but after 1 month, the entire bottom half of the screen momentarily freezes and unfreezes--constantly throughout the game. This persists until I connect the charger. Overall, I would say the majority of problems I have had with the computer is hardware related. Considering the price of the Dell XPS 15, I would trade it in for a Macbook Pro in a heartbeat and invest a bit more money in a company that has a much more reliable product and will actually help in solving problems related to their products. For its price, the XPS 15 is NOT WORTH. I expected a MUCH better device with close to no hardware problems. I Literally went two times higher than my dedicated budget and spent almost 2 years of savings (around $2400 with tax+extra for shipping) for this laptop. For students who are on a budget--like I was--, I would recommend a Samsung device. Before the XPS 15, I used the Samsung notebook 9 (~$1,200) for 6 years. Games (Wizard101, League of Legends, Fortnite) worked perfectly on my Samsung device for all 6 years. All the workload that my Dell seems to be unable to handle worked unbelievably smoothly on my Samsung device. Good luck choosing a device everyone.
Well done! Thank you so much for showing the internals! I like my laptops with a number pad, but, with 2 M.2 NVMe SSD slots, upgradeable to 64 GB of RAM, an OLED display and a GPU, I'm sold! Time to start saving!
Lisa, can you test the OLED for color accuracy shifting when adjusting the brightness after calibration? I know Samsung announced the issue to have been fixed on their 3rd gen Laptop OLED display but I would still like to see your review of the panel.
I tested it with our Spyder Elite colorimeter at 100% and 50% brightness, and the color accuracy was similar. Given it's only a 389 nit panel, I personally wouldn't run it lower than 50% for photo or video editing.
I have lenovo X1 yoga with OLED gen 1. Had to transition to a Dell for IT support at my work. It's a core i7, 32 gB RAM and 2 TB HD. I'm happy with it. Compared to lenovo, there's no comparison to a lenovo keyboard but I use a bluetooth keyboard and have external monitors. Not a tank like a lenovo but seems reasonably built. I wish it had more ports and personally don't need a SD card slot. The weight is reasonable. Didn't go with OLED screen on this one as I care about battery life and use externals. I was thinking about getting the lenovo extreme gen 4 but didn't for the aforementioned reasons. Lisa, can you do a smackdown between the lenovo extreme gen 4 and this dell XPS 15?
I'm not entirely sold on the OLED model. Colours are oversaturated OOB, making colour management in Windows a nightmare. Calibrating the display with proper hardware and software only fixes the problem within colour managed apps. Everything else is still oversaturated. This is mostly a Windows issue and not Dell's fault completely. However, I think the problem could be solved if Dell would offer a version that is just sRGB instead of the current wide-gamut version. Really, the ideal would be that Microsoft gets their shit together. Most people use their OS, so it would be nice to see them actually give a shit for once.
Im usually buying 2-in-1 convertibles in 13” and not bigger. In 15” for me it’s big and a classical laptop for desk use, and on desk i dont need the tablet-like use of the 2-in-1.

I don't understand why Dell forces you to upgrade to an i7 when upgrading both RAM and Graphics card on this model. On the 13 inches version you can upgrade the RAM up to 16GB and the storage as well without having to opt for the i7.
I bought this exact model but with 1TB SSD $2399 Best Buy.... I added a second SSD Gen 4 and get 7000read and 5000 write speeds now and upgraded to 32GB ram. Very happy with the computer all around pretty much perfect. The only issue so far is it seems VERY easy to ding up with all the sharp edges, I don't know how but I have many dings already and it stays on the desktop mostly. Also when using in clamshell it seems to open up about 1/2" apparently there isnt a magnet to keep it closed... Kind of annoying. But to have a really strong computer like this that can actually game for my gaming needs, Very nice screen, good for video edit and has sd card slot I will take a couple flaws
I have a brand new XPS 15 and the lid is not closing when held vertically. I would like to know if the reviewer had the same issue because as far as I know, other user had the same issue and Dell consider this behavior as "by design" :-/
I had one XPS 15 a couple years ago, never again. DPC latency that made pretty much any live A/V impossible, they bait and switched by forcing lower power limits on the GPU in BIOS updates, and Dell's massacring of sleep behavior continues to create unacceptable instability.
Forgot about the S3 sacrifice debacle in my comment! Absolutely unforgivable by Microsoft and Dell (and whoever else succumbed to the 'modern standby' nonsense). My 8yr old laptop can properly sleep in S3 with FAR less battery drain than my XPS 9500 - and only takes perhaps 1s more to wake up. How they got away with massacring this previously perfect functionality, and replacing it with problem-riddled trash, is beyond me.
And horrible motion blur on the last years IPS / Touch version. They still haven't jumped on board on the touchpad mechanical fork that Apple and now Asus also apparently uses.
I have the XPS 9510 Oled, 11800H 32 GB 1 TB, and its an absolute beauty. The first unit I had, was defective, but he replacement is flawless. Love the XPS line, and the 15 with Oled and 11th Gen intel is a dream. Very good review!

What is your recommendation for a 12 gen i7 , 16 ram DDR5, 4 k min 14 inch ( must be at least 14 inch) display, 1 TB min ssd gen 4 laptop in April 2022? Use case 12 -14 hrs IT work including 5/6 hours of typing, video/ photo editing, light gaming (15-20%). Lenovo X1 Carbon doesn’t have IR Anand 4K available. Those are highly expected. Thanks!
Really don't like the soldered WiFi/BLE card idea. My current Dell is less than three years old and I had to replace the card recently because the BLE portion died. It's nice to be able to replace these things when needed.
My question, as I look at samples of upcoming Unreal 5 Engine games and my desire to get into VR more (and my current laptop is an Alienware 15 R3 that's more than five years old), is exactly how much of everything I would need to make those games run smoothly, while future proofing a new computer for at least several years. Of course, I can just go straight for the maximally configured latest Alienware 15...
Yup, that's why I barely use my XPS 15 because I hate the keyboard layout. I use my XPS 13 99% of the time because I love the keyboard layout. That's why I'm thinking of no longer upgrading my 15's and use that money on things I'll actually use regularly.
I'm still not sure OLED is durable enough for use with a computer that is going to have static parts of the display. TVs are generally fine as people tend to watch videos on them (and no one who cares watches stuff with watermarks). Phones are generally fine as people switch apps/pages in apps often. The status bar is small and generally doesn't show different static images. General purpose computers have quite a lot of static parts of the image.
I love this woman I’m watching here for years and she is awesome. I have one question why Dell is not joining the Miniled or microled displays in the flagship xps laptops.
Ma'am, Please help me in guiding the best laptop to buy under ₹80-90k(i.e. $1000). I'm a student, use laptop for writing projects, editing photos and consuming online content. Features needed: 1. 3:2 Ratio Laptop 2. Intel 11th Gen Processor 3. Backlit Keyboards with great feedback 4. 15 inches Display 5. Good Port Selection 6. Minimum 8GB(upgradable) 7. Decent Battery Life (6-9hr) Looking forward for your reply. Thanks
The keyboard feel is one thing, but the layout is also worthy of note. In my opinion, Dell really dropped the ball here: Home/End is shared with F11/F12. Page keys are combined with cursor keys. If you work with big files (documents, spreadsheets, code, whathaveyou) and use the navigation keys a lot, you won't like this keyboard!
Yup, that's why I barely use my XPS 15 because I hate the keyboard layout. I use my XPS 13 99% of the time because I love the keyboard layout. That's why I'm thinking of no longer upgrading my 15's and use that money on things I'll actually use regularly.
Is this still plagued by: - speaker rattling (hardware issue) - I've seen new complaints from 9510 users in the 9500 thread over on dell community forums "XPS 15 9500, distorted/crackling audio, built-in speakers" - color banding when using Dell PremierColor to control the color gamut? Signed, XPS 9500 user.
Our unit doesn't have either of those issues. I personally avoid Dell Premiere Color and use the default (quite good) calibration or use a colorimeter if I prefer something even more dialed in for accuracy.
If Dell sent this over I suspect it was checked extensively for flaws so probably not realistic as to what consumers end up getting sadly? My experience has been bad hence my move to Apple and other OEMs.
These issues are still there. I have returned two 9510. Both had speakers issues and color banding with 4k HDR display. Also it was unusable to watch 4k HDR video at RUclips due to dropped frames and therefore lags.
I might want the brighter IPS display option for outdoor use, or the non-glossy FHD+. Both the 4K IPS and FHD+ displays are 500 nits, so 100 nits brighter than the OLED.
The speakers are totally trash. I had two 9510 both went back to Dell due to distortion and crackling while playing piano sounds or windows notification sounds. Also the laptop is heavily laggy when you turn on HDR in Windows. It's impossible to play HDR 4k videos in RUclips without lag. Additionally i had color banding with the display. Beware of Dell QA Issues! You also get high pitched sounds once fans have high rpm and you use it on your lap. As long you use it on your desk it's fine and this high pitched whistling does not appear.
This laptop is a sleeper. I got one at a very good price on ebay. with just a little cosmetic imperfections, very slight. Actually, i like the keyboad. I normally do not like short travel, but this one feels good. It does not get really hot while pushing it hard on cool or optimus mode while playing games. I get between 40 and 50, sometimes more on the latest games, and aolid 60 on my favorite, Destiny 2. Playing on cloud with good framerates too. it is a ideal size, fans or quiet. unless you have ultra performance, and then they get failry loud, which I don't see a need to go that route I actually do not have anything negative to say about this laptop. It is a deal in 2024, unless you hare a hard core gameer. The battery life is also solid with almost 8 hours of normall use.
I barely use my XPS 15 because I hate the keyboard layout. I use my XPS 13's 99% of the time because I love the keyboard layout. That's why I'm thinking of no longer upgrading my 15's and use that money on things I'll actually use regularly.
I've tried both and settled with the xps 13 oled. The xps 15 and the spectre throttle top much to the point where it's the same speed as the xps 13. Xps 15 has really good speakers though.
@@Lumpia_In_Texas I like the pen because it comes with the Spectre and dont need some dongle also. I dont play hard core games, maybe like Plants vs Zombies or Tetrus stuff.
Too bad you can't get OLED or 4K without the discrete graphics. I do want the better screens but I don't want to ruin my laptop with discrete graphics (more heat, more components, etc)
The "deals" dell has on their site for xps rn are worse than the sales they had mid summer. Trust me, ive been checked at least every two weeks bc i REALLY want one, but im quite literally poor so Im keeping a close eye on the price fluctuations
Demand outstripping supply in the laptop space, no need for regular discount to drive sales, also windows 11 is round the corner. I wouldn’t expect discounts now until Black Friday and likely will be small.
While the Dells look great I would not go for one again. In the family we have a XPS 9550 which after not even two years was a complete write-off. A 9700 (17 inch) from 2020 which constantly crashes when going in sleep mode. And a XPS 15 2020 l9 that runs so hot you can bake eggs on it. My conclusion: never again!
Same experience as yours as an 9700 owner. It is just laggy, slow and loud. I dunno why all the big tech youtubers are recommending xps laptops but so far everyone I know around me who has used xps experience before shared similar terrible experiences with xps.
Would be nice to know if any of these non gaming laptops w/ dGPUs have a way to bypass Optimus (via USB-C/Thunderbolt/dedicated HDMI/DP) and if those ports support adaptive sync/g sync/ freesync
Sorry. I don't care how expensive it is to produce an OLED thin and light. Having a 720p camera on such expensive laptops in 2020 is absolutely bullshit.
Especially when Lenovo and HP's business laptops have now moved onto 1080p and 1440p respectively. The $399 Surface Go's excellent webcam is a really good example too.
@@apebitmusic83 low resolution and terrible image quality. Surface devices have the best webcams in the business, they look good in almost all lighting conditions.
@@apebitmusic83 the camera is horrendous, I would never use it for regular video conferencing. I have an external cam instead, but I would also use the external one I have regardless of laptop, for others they probably don't want to do that
I have a very bad experience with XPS 15. I spent 4k on the laptop, and the motherboard was changed 3 times within 13 months. It's overheating all the time, and the computer switches on itself, so I'm waking up with a fan at full speed and the computer burning. It was used only for office jobs, PS and AI. Dell didn't help either with their customer service based in India, with babies crying in the background. Nah, never again.

I have it in for review, along with the X1 Extreme.
@@mobiletechreview Great! Can't wait :)
How do you guys press the right F-button when there are no spaces between groups of F-buttons on such keyboards?
How much ist burn-in or a decreasing brightness an issue?
Why don't any reviewers ever mention that the XPS still doesn't have a proper sleep mode? That could be a deal-breaker for some.
Is the trackpad still a paddle lever? Or is it click press anywhere
Very good review Lisa as always.. Take care 🤩🤩🤩
For VR, I'd go with a higher end GPU. An RTX 3070 would be a strong pick that you could count on for a few years to come.
Love that the RAM and storage are upgradable, but the keyboard layout is just atrocious for the sake of the touchpad.
Why are there so many 13" 9310 on ebay but hardly any 15" 9510?
The 15" came out more recently, so not on the market as long.
Features needed:
1. 3:2 Ratio Laptop
2. Intel 11th Gen Processor
3. Backlit Keyboards with great feedback
4. 15 inches Display
5. Good Port Selection
6. Minimum
8GB(upgradable)
7. Decent Battery Life (6-9hr)
Looking forward for your reply.
Thanks
is the intel Iris XE on XPS 13 better than the UHD one in this one (XPS 15)?
Yes, definitely.
Is this still plagued by:
- speaker rattling (hardware issue) - I've seen new complaints from 9510 users in the 9500 thread over on dell community forums "XPS 15 9500, distorted/crackling audio, built-in speakers"
- color banding when using Dell PremierColor to control the color gamut?
Signed, XPS 9500 user.
Our unit doesn't have either of those issues. I personally avoid Dell Premiere Color and use the default (quite good) calibration or use a colorimeter if I prefer something even more dialed in for accuracy.
2/3 purchased have these sound issues, cannot use speakers even after dell engineer “fixed” them.
Runs crazy hot
Touchpad far worse than the 2017 XPS
If Dell sent this over I suspect it was checked extensively for flaws so probably not realistic as to what consumers end up getting sadly? My experience has been bad hence my move to Apple and other OEMs.
These issues are still there. I have returned two 9510. Both had speakers issues and color banding with 4k HDR display. Also it was unusable to watch 4k HDR video at RUclips due to dropped frames and therefore lags.
Is the OLED good enough to work sitting outside?
I had the 15, and speaker are really good, quite a bit better than the average windows speakers. You must have had a defective unit
Offering a model with just 8GB RAM is a joke in 2021
This laptop is a sleeper.
Thanks
It looks very interesting, Intel 11th gen CPUs, up to NVIDIA RTX 3050 Ti graphics, and an absolutely striking 3.5K OLED touch screen.
great job.
I want darkgrey / black, not white.
I barely use my XPS 15 because I hate the keyboard layout. I use my XPS 13's 99% of the time because I love the keyboard layout. That's why I'm thinking of no longer upgrading my 15's and use that money on things I'll actually use regularly.
Lisa is the best..👍
Lisa, either this XPS 15 or the x360 Spectre for productivity and normal everyday usage?
I've tried both and settled with the xps 13 oled. The xps 15 and the spectre throttle top much to the point where it's the same speed as the xps 13. Xps 15 has really good speakers though.
@@Lumpia_In_Texas I like the pen because it comes with the Spectre and dont need some dongle also. I dont play hard core games, maybe like Plants vs Zombies or Tetrus stuff.
Nice.
I am in the same boat.been looking for a good deal the past month but nothing
Demand outstripping supply in the laptop space, no need for regular discount to drive sales, also windows 11 is round the corner. I wouldn’t expect discounts now until Black Friday and likely will be small.
Dell...we want AMD option
While the Dells look great I would not go for one again. In the family we have a XPS 9550 which after not even two years was a complete write-off. A 9700 (17 inch) from 2020 which constantly crashes when going in sleep mode. And a XPS 15 2020 l9 that runs so hot you can bake eggs on it. My conclusion: never again!
Same experience as yours as an 9700 owner. It is just laggy, slow and loud. I dunno why all the big tech youtubers are recommending xps laptops but so far everyone I know around me who has used xps experience before shared similar terrible experiences with xps.
Thanks guys for sharing your thoughts on that laptop. So which one do you recommend instead of that XPS?
very nice
Is key travel more or less than the XPS 13?
Clicked for the word “oled”
Left “but liked the video” for the price
Story of my life
Would be nice to know if any of these non gaming laptops w/ dGPUs have a way to bypass Optimus (via USB-C/Thunderbolt/dedicated HDMI/DP) and if those ports support adaptive sync/g sync/ freesync
Web coding in 50% brightness, you can get maybe 5hrs max.
No standard USB? No RJ-45? Never ever!
vs x1 extreme gen 4 :)

inside looks the same. Only difference is those two thin copper heatsinks. Dell gotta let the XPS 13 and 15 BREATHE.
Sorry. I don't care how expensive it is to produce an OLED thin and light. Having a 720p camera on such expensive laptops in 2020 is absolutely bullshit.
But honestly, who cares? Do you want to pay more for a better camera? Isn’t 720p good enough for regular video conferencing?
A $399 Surface Go has a much better camera than this thing.
I have an external cam instead, but I would also use the external one I have regardless of laptop, for others they probably don't want to do that
Forgot to mention THE 1990'S webcam
Wow Dell does not sleep..
Dell XPS is best!
Dell should redesign top cover with the DELL logo to make it looks more premium.. it just look like any cheap dell laptop..
pass.. just too expensive for what you're getting. Especially when you can get a lenovo ideapad 5 pro 16 that is on par with this for
Give me oled with an i5 and iris xe graphics......
Intel Core iLisa
XPS and Inspiron have the worst Trackpad experience in all laptops. I can never drag windows by keeping the trackpad pressed.
And like always it sucks with support of encoders/decoders.
15" and only USB-C ports. No thanks.
it has thunderbolt 4, that's all you need
@@KiLL3RiFiCATiON there's no wireless mouse with usbc dongles, normal tv and most monitors don't come with usbc port, you need a dongle everywhere, that's no good. I have a razer blade 14, that has 2 usb a, 2 usb c, a hdmi and a headphone jack, Dell has no excuse to put only usbc ports.
Killer wifi chipset... and can't be removed... I know I'm never buying that. I had a del xp13 with a killer wifi chipset, and it was ridiculously bad.
I Iove you Glenn
