I still cannot believe that they played at Hofstra University. I was 10 yrs old at the time of this phenomenal performance. Holy shit Dicky Betts kicked some royal ass. His strings were smokin' .I was born in the wrong era. Wish I could have been in attendance.
Great performance by all and Dickie played his ass off, that used to be a two guitar punch with Duane, this is the first time i've heard it with just Dickie and he kicked ass, not the easiest thing to play under any circumstance but without Duane an even more remarkable accomplishment. Geez, what a great band they were.
Agree . I think Dickie betts deserves more recognition than he gets . Duane allman gets most of the praise and rightfully so he was truly amazing and accomplished so much in a short amount of time . But Dickie betts is great in his own right and had to step up under really hard circumstances . They was an incredible duo that was second to none for the brief period allman brothers had the original lineup
There is a bunch of tape of the 5 piece band. Go look for it! This is unique in that Berry Oakley and Chuck Leavell were in the band!
@@joelfox3738 - I'm kinda stuck on the idea that Dickie didnt just step up, i think he was always that good its just that Duane overshadowed Dickie, Duane always said that DIckie was the man. He did have In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Blue Sky and Jessica already in his writing catalog. I think the spotlight just caught up to how good Dickie really was the whole time but now only he at (guitar) was featured. I dont know, maybe just a kink in my thinking.

One of my favorite songs by ABB. I could feel Greggs pain. I know his brother was with him. Long live ABB. Forever. Rest in Paradise.
ABB was definitely still channeling or operating every night as if Skydog was still on stage with them... kind of like as a finger, hand or leg was just cut off still doing it without feeling the real loss before - some time or thought! I give them credit for still sounding and playing at Fillmore live level though missing a major link in the band as Gregg is surely singing here and for the next year or two after this perfomance at full ABB early recording quality still with Duanne "Skydog" Allman leader powers!

These are the days I just listen to the Allman Brothers on the radio & use to get 8 track tape's to listen to band . Today is Oct 25, 2023. 4:31 p.m.🎼
I was there, little OG turning 15 the next wk. My greatest regret is that the prior year I passed on the show they did at a movie theater in Huntington (LI).
I would have seen Brother Duane.

I was fortunate enough to have been there. There was definitely a dark cloud hanging overhead, which made the performance that much more intense. Didn't realize it was Berry's last show.

This is so heart wrenching to watch. They are still in mourning esp. Gregg. You can see it in his eyes. Didn't realize at the 10:15 mark Gregg ad-libs the lyrics, singing "there's no such thing as dying" He is pouring out his anguish in the song and more tragedy was yet to come unfortunately with the death of Berry a week or so later.
That’s not an ad-lib. He had been singing it for almost a year at this point.
I SAW THEM IN 1989 IN ATLANTA GEORGIA AT A PAVILLION CALLED THE CHASTAIN AMPHITHEATRE AND WAS A GREAT SHOW, WHIPPING POST WAS THE LAST SONG ON THE SET LIST AND LIKE THIS ONE IT WENT ON FOREVER

I saw an interview with Gregg Allman on tv one time years ago. He got kind of pissed off when the interviewer referred to them as " Southern rock". He let the interviewer know straight up that all rock and roll is southern, born in the south as a mixture of blues, gospel , jazz and country music. Damn straight!!
Cant' say I blame him; however, knowing that the ABB came from the south, I can't help but feel a regional pride being a southerner myself.
@@fredevans7117 I remember that interview and the interview was an idiot...I was surprised Gregg didn't get on up and walk out the door...but he IS a Southern Gentleman....

Wow!!!! The Ending was sooo haunting and Beautiful!!!! You could hear the pain in Greg's voice. Just over a year after loosing Duane
GreGG. But,, you're so right. This aired on both, the East and West Coast, it was a free concert for television, that is why it's at a college...but. this song is really haunting...listen to the words at the end...even in the middle. He changes them to "there aiin't no such thing as dying..." He cannot pull himself together and band kind of takes over for him....really sad. Oh sorry, you reference the ending,,,I though you meant of an era, not the song...sorry.
Dickey was right on during this performance and he used vibrato more than you realize. Gregg’s voice was clear as a bell. Great job by all.
There isn’t much video of the early band so this tape is incredibly interesting!

Love this performance. For you guitarists/musicians paying attention. you can clearly hear that the song is in A major, not minor. Although it may have a minor feel, and the solos tend to be in A dorian, that C# rings loud and clear in the progression. Now you know. :)

It is primarily in A major correct but the verses go A, Bm7, Am7/C, the instrumental break down where it rises up the scale is in A Dorian and the ending chords is an Am9. So lots of modal mixture in this song.

Joe Logger , yes this was Berry's last concert. He liked to walk around the stage to see how they sounded from different spots. You can really see that on "one way out" from this show, very cool. So much talent.
When Gregg sings this version of Whipping Post at Hofstra, the entire band was still very much in mourning and feeling the pain from the loss of Brother Duane, in addition to embracing the healing process through whatever means necessary. Just watch Gregg closely while he belts out the vocals of WP, good Lord you can actually see and feel his pain....At about the 10:15 time mark of this Live version, Gregg ad-libs the lyrics, singing "there's no such thing as dying"......yes, this is Brother Berry's last live performance with the ABB...very haunting ad-libed lyrics from Gregg for sure, and equally reflective and prophetic, as Brother Berry would be lost less than ten days later....A wise old bluesman told me a long long time ago, to sing and play the blues, you gotta live the blues..................The road goes on forever.....through the music!
stay off the weed bud Joe has it going in the right direction. Greg probably not feeling a whole lot depressed about his brother's death since this concert took place 9 days before his death. thats right no reason for pain before his untimely death. maybe on Nov 12 he ain't feeling too good
Duane, Gregg's actual brother and founder of the band, died October 29th of 1971. That's right, one year almost to the day BEFORE this show. Berry Oakley died nine days AFTER. So yes, he was probably still pretty depressed.

This is the first time I remember seeing the ABBs after Duane's tragic death. Did you notice that at the end of this version, he says "Some times I feel, Some times I feel
OH, Lord don't you know that I know...there AIN'T NO SUCH THING as DYING!" This is one grieving band. All of them look run down and worn out....sad times would come again shortly....

It was a free show and they weren't sure that they would be accepted without Duane.
They used to play SUNY Stony Brook all the time. Also, CW Post.
The deeper analogy I get here is, human nature is just like water on any terrain. The path of least resistance to the ancient lake, baby.
You can always find the outliers but those are truly spectacles.
I saw this lineup play the former Music Hall in Boston either spring or summer (I’m pretty sure) in ‘73.
Leavell by then was playing an even bigger role.
And I’m pretty sure he played more than just the Fender Rhodes.
I wonder if that was my mama in the audience standing and dancing. ;)

Whatever troubles Gregg had, they did not come close to the troubles of those who were tied to the whipping post.

I think it was their first one after Duane's death too. Listen to the way he changes the words at the end of whipping post and, at about 7:45. I listened really closely and made out something about him watching him right now...talking to Duane....hear it?

@@judygirl3102 The first show after Duane's death was on November 22 in 1971 at C.W. Post College Campus in Greenvale, only a couple weeks after his funeral and almost a year prior to this show. The band pretty much immediately started playing dates again after Duane's death.

Yes, Berry and Chuck only played together a short time. There is a version of WP in 72 without Chuck. 5 man band. You tube it Hollywood Bowl 1972. Dickey is great. Simaler to this but different without piano.

Chuck Leavell was right on target, but you can tell that Dickey Betts just wasn’t feeling’ it that night. Lord I wish they had invited Les Dudek into the lineup at that time. He would have pushed Dickey to be a lot better, just like Duane did.
