I produced this show... I was the Concert Chair... we taped for 20 hours.... it was magical
I believe you Scott Ross. I loved the 5 Man Band. Everyone picked it up a notch while not stepping on any ones toes. Dickey was magic and Greggs singing was loud and clear. Thanks!
Scott Ross - I believe this concert is one of the best of the ABB with or without Duane. Can you provide any more info on this concert? How long was the show? How would you characterize their spirit? Was it a one-night or two-night gig? To my ears they were at the top of their game. I hear a wonderful concert. There is so much disagreement on whether Barry was horribly depressed or coming out of his depression from Duane's death. I would love to hear your comments on what you remember. Thanks.

@@anncooley6844 In Gregg's book "Not My Cross To Bear" he specifically said Berry couldn't cope with Duane's death and was never the same. Not that everything in his book is 100% accurate but I'm not sure who disputes this. Gregg would be one to know.
@@andymarchus6250 I own the book, read it, and I think Gregg is a good witness. Then there is this other account from One Way Out. He had organized a festival, or was to participate in a festival, and he was excited about it. Jaimoe said this or he said something similar in another book or article, and both Gregg & Jaimoe obviously knew him. The stories conflict. The Berry I see in this concert has had a year to mourn and he seems to be enjoying himself. I simply hoped Scott Ross would provide his opinion. Thank you for the answer.

Dickey deserves props. He held the band together and played his ass off. Duane mentioned in an interview that Dickey was the 'good' guitarist in the band. God bless the ABB.

kept the band going FOR Duane. I don't think he got too much support from Jaimoe. Butch or even Gregg so he took the lead. I think Duane would say to Dickey. You did good, Brother!!
This was no picnic for them...can you imagine..They had debt and bills and they needed to play...They werent rich guys who could just say fuck it and take a couple yeats off...They had to work...They sucked it up and went to it...they didnt have the heart yet to fill the big brothers spot but at least they were out...

I read that Duane told one of the crew that the reason he didn't stick with Derek and the Dominoes was because Eric Clapton had nothing on Dickey Betts!
Dickey Betts is FANTASTIC here. Truly one of the greatest guitarists of all time. On a side note, bassist Barry Oakley died 9 days after this performance... :(

I was at this show, I took up the bass after seeing Berry Oakley there-amazing playing and a unique tone that the video doesn't do justice to. A truly great and underrated bassist. The band did the best live shows you could find.
Thats a major bummer. It makes sense tho, as I was watching I thought his demeanor/energy was off. R.I.P Mr. Oakley
They were always great live, but it really looks as if no one's heart is really in it here--and you're right...Berry in particular. Butch also looks as if he's just going through the motions. Totally understandable, of course, but really sad.
WOW , hadn’t seen this one and man it was tough. I miss these guys more than any band ever. I think Mr. Bill Graham who was way ahead of his time said it perfectly when he said they were the best of them all and they were. Every member was absolutely the best and I sure am thankful that they had the guts to keep going and keep making the music that has helped me get through many times good and bad for 52 years. Every member through all the years have been the best of the best bar none. God bless them all each and every one of them and he certainly blessed me to be able to hear and see them many times and so thankful to have the opportunity to take my grandson to see them a few years ago because his generation has missed the true masters of music and again like Mr. Graham said, the absolute best. Legends and also real dudes man real dudes.

Julia S that's just true and I'm glad you said it. That HUGE voice has always just left me wondering about sound creation. He doesnt LOOK like that voice. When I saw em all sitting in that creek inside first album I think I was just struck that such music could come from a pack of skinny little white boys and I was a skinny little white boy. Lots of hair though. I've seen them many times. I was struck Allan's had same instrumental line up as Grateful Dead. Two drummers, guitars, so on. The jams they get into are. Seeing them that second time at Ludlow Garage I was doing an Ohio Sunshine Company Orange barrel LSD. Just amazing band in every way. May I please shut up now? Thank you.

@@irishguyjg_2ndchancerecovery They have all passed except for Dickie Betts, one of the lead guitarists and Derek Trucks, also lead guitar in later years. Dickie is the singer on Ramblin Man, also songwriter of many songs. The lead vocals, organ and guitar is Gregg Allman.
They have a fantastic catalog of music.
Duane Allman, Gregg’s older brother and stellar slide guitarist started the band in 1969.
You must hear At Fillmore East. First band to be labeled Southern Rock. Incorporating a Blues sound and first to have two drummers.
I could go on but won’t 😉 I hope you’ve discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd. The other greatest Southern Rock band ever.

I've always know about ABB, but never paid much attention UNTIL I found Hank Williams Jr, who kept talking about the Allman Brothers, so I stopped listening to outlaw country now and went full on Dickie Betts and the Allman Brothers. I have the entirety of the fillmore east on my Spotify, incredible harley riding music and just plain listening music. It's incredible. The youngest man playing the piano is Gregg Allman? Or Duane? Or us Duane the blonde guitarst who's no longer with us? W
There's no one in this time period that can match these guys. They were awesome. Dickey Betts' performance in Whipping Post is out of this world. Gotta love the guy.
Tragedy follows the Brothers. They lived the blues. My favorite band of all time.
This video. in Allmanology. is a rare, precious document. 1972, was the year in which Berry Oakley was still alive after Duane being snatched by Fate. Berry died 5 weeks after this show. The way Dickie carries on is a tribute...
I seen this Tour, a few days later in Boston. Dicky stepped up big-time. Berry was smoking good in Boston.
Greg sang his ass off. The whole band was on fire. I still miss Duane.

I saw the tour in Salem OR not sure if was before or after Boston and yes they were on fire. Dickie played his ass off like I've never heard him before. A combination of big shoes to fill and having more room open up!
So is that why only one guitarist?? Was this pretty recent after Duanes’ death? I think this is the on footage I’ve ever seen where the Allmans had only one guitarist.

Dicky Betts is probly the most under appreciated guitarist from this time
one of the best versions of Ramblin Man on video. Raymond Berry Oakley was in my opinion the best bass player in southern rock hands down. His melodic bass lines along with playing support with counter lines with lead guitar gave the Allman Brothers Band is amazing original sound never duplicated after his motorcycle dealth on november 11, 1972. Berry oakley was a major force in the allman brothers sound as they are the grandfathers of southern Rock n Roll. Rip BO.

Eerie in a way seeing Barry play only 9 days before his passing. My favorite band by a long shot.
They say Berry was deeply depressed at the time, but when we saw this tour in Salem OR in Feb 72 he was on fire. We were sad that Duane was gone, but little did we know how fortunate we were for in 9 months he'd be gone too.
I saw the band in Mobile, Al, the FIRST PUBLIC PERFORMANCE for them AFTER Duane's death. They actually played as if Duane was on the stage. No attempt was made to modify. Soul Shock and HS presence had them playing with Duane in their ears and hearts. Berry was phenomenal to watch. Completely transfixed by their vibe, that bass became a lead guitar. To see him sway to the beat, his leg rolling and bending to the flow was a spiritual experience. He was as great an artist on the bass as Duane was on his Gibson. Those two, together, created the multi-leveled, original mastery of musical fusion known as the Allmans. After Berry's needless death and Duane's tragic crash, the true band was gone. They soldiered on, with dignity and future success; but they never returned to the mountaintop again. In my heart, the ABB was the superb masters of American music fusion to this day. Their harmonics, power, and creativity powered by hypnotic positivity birthed a new musical idiom. Too bad their intense personalities became self destructive. Euphoria in such immense dosages coupled with the band's dangerous drug usage destroyed their common sense.

And yet the surviving members went the long haul, gaining a whole new audience in the 21st century.
Dicky and Chuck tore up Whipping Post; the whole band did. Greg’s vocals were pure.
The Brothers are a one of kind Band. Many lives, many looks, many crisis but always coming back and sometimes even better.....kinda like a human life. The Blues/Jazz/Improv they mastered has always moved me in my many lives, looks, crisis and even now that I am better than ever......thanks Allman Brothers for a lifetime of music.
With the addition of some of their descendants, it may be more than one lifetime.
Watched this in early or mid-70's on local tv as In Concert. Berry Oakley was still around and Chuck Leavell is already playing on Fender Rhudes. Seems this was fresh at the time of Duane's demise. You can feel the sadness and grief of the group's playing. Thanks to the uploader I got to see this again.
I recorded the FM simulcast of the TV program when I was 16. A few months later, the cassette tape was stolen. 😭 But, this video is the one! I'm sure the sound is better than that old tape.

I saw that broadcast, too. If the dates are right, Berry died nine days later. I recall that the show ended with a note about it. Yes, thanks for uploading. Glad that this show was not lost to time.
BERRY OAKLEY, bass player for the Allman Brothers Band was killed in a motor cycle accident...All of us involved in the production this "In Concert" would like to dedicate this show to his memory.
The absolute best band ever!!! They have carried me through many times in my life! Good to see Berry on this set but I like every incarnation of the Allman Brothers. RIP Duane Berry Lamar Dan Frankie Allan Butch and most of all Gegg

I used to have the Gainesville concert, on video! I think it was at the University of Florida field 1982. They really did put on a superb show every time they played!

I concur Stephen and we're not alone in that opinion. Jaimoe was reported to have said following Gregg's death that Gregg Allman was one of the best blues singers of all time - period.

Never seen this before. Brothers have always been my favorite band. I am 61 and have seen them many times. Who would have thought Dickie and Jaimoe would been the last guys standing? Butch's death really bothered me. Gregg's was no surprise. Alway's loved Greggs vocals. The Road Goes on Forever. Thanks for sharing.
Bob J - I agree totally. After a while I couldn’t take Derek anymore. But I must admit the March 10 2020 show was darn good. Kind of sorry I didn’t go.
I saw this band late 60's early 70's in NJ at a stadium near Jersey City. Had never seen anything like them. I was already sold on the blues they sold me on southern rock. They were so much better live than what I had already heard on vinyl.
I was there 6/7-8/74 Roosevelt Stadium Jersey City Grinderswitch Marshall Tucker and ABB Lamar Williams on bass I was there one night as well just had my wisdom teeth out so needed some pain relief 🍄🍑

Also in Jersey City at the theater in Journal Square Jersey City I saw the Band, The Grateful Dead, Malo with Quicksilver Messenger Service, awesome concert, the Dead was one of the best concerts there lasted a good 4 to 4 hours, they cut the power and turned on the lights to get the Dead to stop

@@johnslomko4040 Yes, Roosevelt Stadium another venue I saw some great concerts was a theater on Journal Square I saw Johnny Winter there and the Grateful Dead. Those we're some good times and $6 to $10 tickets to boot.
At the Grateful Dead dead concert the theater had to cut the power after about 4 hours of music, part of the audience was dancing with the Dead on stage, Pigpen had a brown paper grocery bag under the organ full of joints he was throwing out into the audience. I saw Quick Silver there too
I was there and it brings back so many memories of the best rock blues soul band of all time.

I saw The ABB at Fillmore East several times - 2/11/1970 late show, 3/13/1971 late show and 6/26/1971 - early show - if I had gone to the late show instead, I would have been there for the legendary all night late show and jam! Also saw them in July 1971 in Central Park, both early and late shows.

Dickey is so underrated as a guitarist man. This is still great music, not as good as Duane with them but still leaps above just about everyone else at the time. Pre 75 Chicago with Terry and the original Santana band before they broke up were my favorite American bands.

I was at the May 2nd, 1971 concert at Hofstra. It was probably the best show I've ever seen. Duane was spectacular. I still miss him.
+Claude Galinsky ... I was at the 1971 Hofstra show as well ... dead center front "row" ... my first time seeing the ABB and it was indeed a fantastic show. I was fortunate enough to see them twice more before Duane's unfortunate demise ... both times at the Fillmore East w/ Canned Heat as the "headliner" and then the Saturday night late show where most of the original Live At Fillmore East album was recorded. I've seen them now and then as well through the years but I don't think they were ever the same, or as "good", as they were with Duane.
To both of you - you were very lucky to see this show. I think this version of Whipping Post is as good as they every did.
Duane died October 29, 1971 (which was my brothers birthday mind you) so yes he would have been at the May 2, 1971 performance.

These men are musicians and I was a true Duane fan but just when people thought they could never put out a power performance without a dual guitar lineup they come back with a piano player, the great Chuck Leavell which I believe was great sound all together and kept them from having a Duane clone which they knew would`t work well !
I think they were very wise not to replace Duane with another guitarist.
I hadn't seen this video in awhile. It started out rough seeing it again after recent events.

Dickey Bets is the most underrated guitar player of all times. When he plays it means that his guitar is softly talking with your ears! Listen to Ramblin`Man and you`ll know what I´m talking about. Cheers from Brasil!
I saw two shows at Ludlow Garage in their run up to the Fillmore East album. Once it cost a dollar and once was free. Just could not believe how tight, perfect they were and totally amazed that huge voice was coming out of that pretty little blonde haired hippie dude who looked kind of like me but better looking by a damn sight. Hahahaha. It was what you can imagine it was. Just so close to perfect. The Alman Brothers Band has given the world so much. So many great spin off bands and people. Butch and Susan comin here to Red Rocks twice next summer. Thinking about these guys long enough and I always end up in tears for the beauty and the losses for those who left us way too soon. I miss the fuck outta Duane. Now Leon is gone too. I'm crying again gd it.

Chills and goosebumps. Just found this...nothing but respect and admiration for the sound these guys produced. Been listening and seeing them since 1971. Been to the Big House. They and this sound are in my blood forever. Long live the ABB. RIP Duane, Greg, Barry, Butch. Can't go a day without hearing them.

Berry Oakley was just playing his rear off! So sad that in a matter of days he would also be gone. The power of the band was still there at this time!
Wow, I've always known that Betts was good, but here he really held his own after Duane's passing. The music isn't the same without that second player, but he does a great job here without one.

I saw these guys in this time period at the Uni of Iowa. Had no idea they would be in my life 45 years later. Still mesmerized by their sound, Gregg's voice, and their skills. Thank you Duane, Gregg, Barry, Butch, Jaimo, Dickie. "I wouldn't cut you loose baby if I could."
I was at that U. of Iowa concert, too, 2/19/72. No Chuck Leavell yet. Opening act: Big Brother & the Holding Company with Kathi McDonald. RIP Kathi and RIP 2/3 of the ABB.

OMG... I just got the biggest chill up my spine.. not only are they without my beloved Skydog.. Berry would be killed 9 days after this concert... one year and 13 days after Skydog... AND within less than 2 miles from each other... Sorry, but to me (old school)... there was NO more Allman Bros. after Skydog's death... I tried... they just... well, for Me it was never the same.. If any of you are not "afraid" of cemeteries, I strongly suggest stopping by Rose Hill to pay your respects... (right off the highway... very peaceful, wonderful place (if you can say that about a cemetery)... lots of wonderful Civil War history to soak up also... of COURSE, I was on a mission to find the grave of Elizabeth Reed (my daughter's name because I loved the song THAT much... ) IF you try and find it... NAPIER is the name on the "plot" (you'll see how families are set up there...) If I've bored you with this... all apologies!
+Anne ReillI hear ya. So to 'stretch' our Duane's/band git yrself a loop recorder or multitrack or just good 'ol CD and record Tom Dowd's "Filmore Concerts" and then 'cut and paste' away. My Mtn Jam runs 65 min. YDLM goes 35, you get the idea, and Duane's solos go back-to-back...as they should
+Anne Reilly ...I visited Rose Hill Cemetery shortly after Berry Oakley's death and got chills too, when I realized that Elizabeth Reed was married to a man named Napier. Berry was killed in a motorcycle accident on Napier Avenue, a short distance from Duane's fatal wreck. To make things even spookier, nearby grave markers show that Elizabeth Reed had two children who died at 24, the same age as Duane and Berry.

Amen brother so well said, you simply can't pretend to replace some people. Duane Allman was simply irreplaceable. .. That being said Derek Trucks is tremendous and was wonderfully influenced by Mr Allman but went on in a true way to gave his own awesome style.
Brilliant playing by the whole band, especially Dickey.

I amazes me losing Berry 9 days after this didn't tip the band over the edge. Some bands never recover from one major loss let alone two. I give Greg major props keeping the band together after Berrys death.
Not much good happened after Berry died. They released Brothers and Sisters in '73 and that was their last good studio album. They just happened to have some build up momentum and a lot of very good unreleased material when Duane died so they did well for the couple years after. Then the problems started, though I think the loss of Duane was really the tipping point - for a while none of the remaining members wanted or were equipped to lead the band, until Dickey started trying to take over and that didn't end well.

You can almost see the pain in their eyes. Gregg was definitely using here. Something but, the spiral had begun. Dickie bravely stepped up and did fantastic. Berry looked less animated. I mean, the brothers were in pain and although the singing and playing are stellar, it's apparent that they know this is new territory for them. Oh what could have been had Duane lived! But you know, they did carry on. They adapted. Was it the same? No. Was it good? Yes indeed it was.

SURE IT WAS PAINFUL! BUT BETTS WAS THE ONE WHO TOOK THE ALLMAN BROTHERS FROM BEING A GOOD BAND BEING PLAYED ON "F.M. RADIO" ONLY,,, TO TELEVISION, MOVIES (GREGG'S VENTURE INTO FILM!), AND MULTI-GOLD AND EVEN PLATINUM RECORD SALES! IN FACT, DICKEYS ONE SONG ALONE, "RAMBLIN MAN", IS WHAT MADE THE BROTHERS NEARLY 4 MILLION ALBUM SALES OF THE "BROTHERS AND SISTERS" ALBUM ALONE!
bebop redux , they were all using well before this and well after. Best band ever in my opinion, but they were all using heroin. Sometimes I think they couldn't have gotten any better and it had to end. I've seen them in 4 different decades and they were great every time. Never saw the originals though , can't imagine how great that must have been.
