Not only is he a phenomenal drummer and musician, but my guy kept tempo with no metronome in his ear and nothing to reference how hard he is hitting the skins, this dude is pure madness and skill, hours and years behind the set and blood sweat and tears. Mad props.
In my friends band back in the day, the mark for being good was not falling off the stool drunk (with our without taking out the drum set) and having their mic turned off. Admittedly, standards were pretty low.
I love the way he immediately meshed with the band and perfectly matched Dave's intensity second by second, and then at the end, the way the band followed him the same way, as if they'd all been playing together for years. That's more than just talent. It's instinct.
I loved it too there was a couple moments where he overpowered dave with the drums and u could see dave laugh it off nerves if you will. But he blended in so well and was amazing
dude played with someone else set and done everything without ear monitor. don't forgot that he just showed up, means that there was no warm-up. in case you wanna show a talent to somebody, show them this
I saw a similar thing in New Orleans years ago. I was at Pete Fountain’s club and in the audience was Lionel Hampton. Hampton came up and sat in for a couple of numbers. The amazing thing is that Hampton is left handed and he played on a right handed kit like nothing.
And then having Dave tell you that you're a great drummer. Seriously, if that happened to me I could get hit by a bus the next day and think "Yeah, my life was great."
What's funny is Dave DOES NOT consider himself as even a decent drummer, if you've seen the interview he did with Pharrell he said most of "Nevermind" was borrowed from old disco bands (Cameo, Gap Band, Tony Thompson, etc.) "That disco flam works everytime" -Dave
Performing this well with the level of nerves that man must have been feeling is incredibly impressive. I’m happy he had the opportunity to shine like he did. Keep shining young man
@@fuzzylumpkinns for me it was the opposite. I always performed way better in front of an audience than when practicing. I guess it stems from being my own worst critic.
As a session guitarist and bassist for half of my life, I have to say that he is the kind of drummer that would make me feel confident that a tour is going to be a joy to play. I'd instantly know I could riff with him as a bassist, or be much more laid back on the guitar knowing the song will be carried in safe hands. As much as band members love to joke about one another, with drummers being the butt of many jokes, the reality is that they are the ones who gel a song together along with the bassist. I'm mainly a guitarist and I will gladly say that all I really do is put the icing on top, but drummers who can step up in front of any crowd and play this solidly without any monitoring hold a song together at its core and they have my complete appreciation and deepest respect.
No one cares that you're a "session" guitarist. Next time just tell the truth and say that you played guitar for your high school garage band... ...and at the age of 53 continue to play with that band at a local tavern, where you play for free because they wouldn't pay you, not even in beer. Your most popular request is "The Sound of Silence." Not the Simon & Garfunkel classic, but literally that your band stop playing for 4 to 5 minutes, which you later found out was 45 minutes, not 4 to 5 like you originally thought. So sad, so sad for you.
@@vapid.aenima @Sheldon Bono I've gotta be honest, I've never had someone request the sound of silence in any of the 66 countries I've performed in, but if ever they do I'll let you know. It is a great song though so I wouldn't mind playing it. However, the day it happens I'll also think of how bitter you feel that you're stuck in your ‘high school garage band’ dreaming that you could have done so much more with your music life if only you'd put a little more work in when it was needed. As far as session work goes, it's not for everyone as it does mean playing music that isn't stuff you like necessarily, but playing in front of arena audiences does make it all feel pretty amazing. As for your local tavern not paying you... That's an issue between you and them, but I personally love the small gigs as much as the bigger ones, though in a different way. However, I never play them without pay unless it's a bloody good charity cause. If your local tavern tells you it's good exposure for you then tell them you will bring 50 people along and they all want free drinks all night. Suggest to them that it will be really good exposure for their tavern. I do hope that you get out on the road yourself. Seeing the world whilst you get paid for playing is amazing fun and it's something that might make you feel noticed by people. I understand that trolling online probably gives you that with a lot less effort required, but do you really feel good about yourself for being this way? I assure you that, no matter how big or small a gig may be, you'll come of stage feeling great about having played to a bunch of people you've never met and may never see again. Kinda like trolling but without the bad attitude.
@@ziergiest it was a work of art I must agree, no way you can try and give a rebuttal to that script beautifully said my man and sounds like a hell of a life
If you pay attention, it's only at the part at 3:42 that Dave actually realized he knew the song, although he had already played the correct transitions at 2:52 and at 3:11. He was grooving so well with the band that it completely flew over Dave's head that he actually knew the song.
@Wayne Halliday that was daves best friend for over 20 years. When Kurt died he could barely sit behind a drumset. Which is the reason he is the singer/guitarist of the foo fighters. Now he won't be able to listen to his own songs or play with his band without thinking of taylor. I think it'll at least be awhile before we see them perform again
Other bands lost people and continued. A7x lost the rev and they were best friends too. And there is alot more bands that lost someone that continued.. It definitively hit Dave and the rest really hard when Taylor passed but they won't give up. Hawkins wouldn't want that for them.

This guy obviously did great. One needs to realize that even though he made mistakes, though not many, he was playing on someone else's kit.....in front of a huge crowd......with the Foo Fighters. Nice job bud. I'd mess it up for sure.
Non drummers probably don't get how hard it is to play someone else's kit. The placement of everything, the kick pedal throw and spring tension. I play with sock feet. A lot of pedals are set up in a way that would throw me off. It's not like a guitar where the variables are much less.
When you start playing for the music... You start to feel it... In Your feet, in your arms... But when it comes to a full sensation you feel it in your soul
Then at 7:00 he picks up on Dave's "Here we go...ready" and brings it all the way up and just lets it all go. He picked up on so many improve cues it's silly.

for all those slagging this guy off and monday morning quarterbacking him, i don't get it. he was very nuanced and tasteful imo. like a natural entertainer. he seemed to recognize when to hold back and lay low and when to be colorful and kept it in time while following grohl's lead the whole performance. i would like to see anyone who is leveling criticism towards this dude's execution be able to keep it together like that in front of a packed house while put on the spot during a once in a lifetime opportunity. imo, it's almost that much harder to anchor the beat on an up and down tune w/ different dynamics like this than a constant hot and heavy bash fest tune. mad respect.
Yeah, a band practices for weeks, or even months to prep for a live tour, not to mention the many years of playing together that FF have under their belt at this point. To just get up on stage and do it cold...
There's a lot more to music and drumming than complexity and technical prowess. This isn't classical music; in rock the performers are the composers (though there are exceptions in the Western classical tradition like Paganini) Not saying Grohl is one of the GOATs--he's decent--but e.g. Charlie Watts is a fuck of a lot better than Thomas Lang as a musician even though he can't play just about anything Lang can; Lang doesn't have anywhere near the dynamic or rhythmic nuance or creativity that drummer like Watts or Jaki Liebetzeit, Bill Bruford, Keith Moon, etc. have: artists who both innovated the performance and composition of the instrument as well as produced until that point unheard of emotional and conceptual expression from it. Clinicians like Lang, Minnemann, Mangini, Donati, Mayer, etc. are mindbogglingly skilled but they're more proofs of concept than they are musicians. They're more appropriately compared to inventors of musical instrument technologies than to musical artists. Nobody in their right mind thinks Michael Angelo Batio or Guthrie Govan are as good as Hendrix as an artist, despite the fact that Hendrix couldn't dream of playing the kind of stuff they could. But let me know when they make a musical masterpiece or do something truly innovative with their instrument. I suspect I'll be waiting until I'm dead. Peart is brilliant though.
AWESOME ! Talk about handling the pressure. Didnt miss a beat. And didn't over play . Very cool. Must say Im a bit jealous . Dave is the most humble rock star ever !!! Great job Richard from Manchester!

Taylor's face at 8:11 is the biggest compliment because as a drummer he's on par with Dave but the difference is Taylor isn't expecting to be on camera. Not saying this is the case because it's not, but Dave could have been hyping him up to just seem nice in front of the crowd and the cameras, but Taylor being out of sight just makes it way more genuine.
You see these 'get some guy on stage' moments and they can be crappy, but this guy absolutely nailed it. Amazing timing, tempo and changes. Fair play to him. You've got to be good to even attempt that onstage in front of all those people, and not even playing on your kit, and to top it all Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins are actually enjoying it and commenting on how good this guy is.
Well ... the "crappy" bit can come from the recording ... and the flickering screen is somewhat annoying, but the audio is good ... and that is the important part for a concert.
This is what all of us unsigned musicians dream about at bedtime. This is like that dream you think about, that you know would never come true, but it actually did for this guy. I've got chills
If you dont know the original compliment that got attacked and aren't going to read the thread, don't comment. All things considered, Richard did ok. I think with nerves, he still tried his best to showcase his technical ability. He blended himself as best as possible, didn't overplay, didn't underplay, kept tempo *as best as possible* considering he hadn't played with the Foo Fighters before, and had his moments, and I think that's a good show of how his musicianship has developed. This was a spectacular watch and it was still 10 minutes worth my time. I'm just going to edit it here as well because it seems people are missing what I was getting at. Guys there's a lot more variables then just technical ability obviously. I won't deny I myself didn't really pay too much attention to detail at first because he did have a difficult time and he did drag. But I wasn't going to be that piece of shit who complains about a performance I did not attempt. I just happened to know how difficult it is. I think most of us wouldn't be here unless we were musicians ourselves (clearly) and quite unfortunately this guy was obviously also nervous. But I think there's a number of things that can be accounted for that worked against him on a first time performance on stage with the foo fighters. You can't deny that he most likely hasn't played with the foo fighters; he was not used to the drum tension of that set and only adapted a little more throughout the song (albeit the last chorus fills were out of place numerous times); he couldn't move any drum pieces and he doesn't look like he has a very big wingspan, if he had to stretch then he lost millisecond slips in his strokes. He most likely did not put in ear comms in because these are usually taken for a joke and being the 3rd core instrument of the band he'd have to put slightly more work into keeping tempo and holding song structure, which in front of so many people he might probably have had quite a bit of nerves for. Nobody wants to deliberately look bad and I think under the circumstances he did the best he could, perhaps comms would've changed the outcome, perhaps his nerves would still have gotten the better of him. At the end we still aren't necessarily going to know unless we actually checkout his stuff. In which case if it so happens to be bad I'll retract what I decided to defend about him, but I'm not going to bash him like some of you. Go and do that performance better first, and then complain about him. For now, I will edit what I said about him initially.
@@Virvum_Juggernaut “entry level” nothing about this is entry level. Hence why this vid has been viewed so many times. Hence why he was complimented by every artist in the stage and how he could play an entire foo fighters song slowed down for an onstage performance. He is incredibly talented.

Not only is he a phenomenal drummer and musician, but my guy kept tempo with no metronome in his ear and nothing to reference how hard he is hitting the skins, this dude is pure madness and skill, hours and years behind the set and blood sweat and tears. Mad props.
That's pretty standard though.
@@zer00rdie Yes and no. You seriously can't hear shit as a musician on stage without proper monitoring.
A lot of "muscle memory" I'd imagine ... if he knows all the songs he probably played them a lot of times.
@@zer00rdie Playing any instrument at a rock concert with no monitor is NOT pretty standard. It's pretty rare.
@@zer00rdie Live drummers can only hear themselves without appropriate monitoring. For drummers it's an ear piece, drums are loud af.
what makes him such a good drummer is that he was able to restrain himself for so long
In my friends band back in the day, the mark for being good was not falling off the stool drunk (with our without taking out the drum set) and having their mic turned off.

Your most popular request is "The Sound of Silence."
Not the Simon & Garfunkel classic, but literally that your band stop playing for 4 to 5 minutes, which you later found out was 45 minutes, not 4 to 5 like you originally thought.

Completely understandable if you're playing a song with a group of guys you've never played with, reading the cues, live, and without monitors.
Non drummers probably don't get how hard it is to play someone else's kit. The placement of everything, the kick pedal throw and spring tension. I play with sock feet. A lot of pedals are set up in a way that would throw me off. It's not like a guitar where the variables are much less.
The lack of in-ears… man that really makes it rough. He hardly even tested out the kicks beforehand. What a band, and what a drummer.
6:30 I like how he tunes down the drumming when the audience joins. Totally in tune with the song and the band through the entire song.

Jesus Christ, imagine thinking that a guy who played in a grunge band is a legend at the drums
Ever heard of Rush? Any other band that actually uses their instruments?
There's a lot more to music and drumming than complexity and technical prowess. This isn't classical music; in rock the performers are the composers (though there are exceptions in the Western classical tradition like Paganini)
Not saying Grohl is one of the GOATs--he's decent--but e.g.

You don’t know what is obviously because that is not “technical skill” but merely entry level layman drumming.

I think you have luck and opportunity backwards
The correct phrase is “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”
That's a cool quote how I felt about my exams at school lol
I love how Dave is clearly having JUST as much fun jamming with that kid!!
So awesome!!
6:56 nailing it. Well, he nailed it the whole song - but that was my goosebumps moment
Respect! What a talented fan! If Taylor's not able, this guy is your man!
We need more humans like Dave. Freaking guy doesn't act like he's better than anyone else and lifts people up!!! There's too many folks that find joy in putting folks down nowadays, so be more like Dave so the world can be a better place. And RICHARD!!! Wow!!!!
10 minutes of a big-ass grin on my face for the drummer. As for Dave Grohl...what a cool dude.
You’ve got to have balls the size of ostrich eggs to get up on stage and play drums for one of the greatest drummers to ever walk the earth...
90% of all drummers would have to die for that to be true.
i like Taylor, but your stretching it JUST a tad.
and if you meant Dave...95% would have to die 1st.
Yeah definitely not in the top like 500 drummers but Dave and Taylor are both still great. As far as success goes yes they are two of the most wealthy and successful drummers for sure.
@@GuiltyHAL343 forget 500 it wouldn't be top 1mil when it comes to walked the earth. Especially with jazz and metal drummers. Especially when it's prog drummers. There's some insane drummers in this world.
I think what the man means to say is you must have a lot of bravery to play for one the the greatest (influential) drummers to ever exist. and Dave was one of the most or the most influential drummer in existence.
@@penguins9087 Curt was the "influential" one.
you could have plugged in just about ANY drummer and gotten the same result.
I'm gonna say what nobody will acknowledge, I'm glad there was someone filming this.
Thx 🙏🏻
Men he's holding his tears as hard as he can. must be fcking genius moment in his life!
The pressure......
I was holding mine…..
"Ok i've seen this again , just going to watch some of it.."
Proceeds to watch the whole video because it's fucking awesome 🤘🤘
thx dude ... so you made most of that 2 Mio. views right ? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@MGA19a lol
I watched this one at least 10 times now. Never gets old.
Moment of a lifetime, amazing performance, made me smile all the way through, all those hours, weeks and years of practicing for this wonderful time in his lif.
When the title said he “destroys it” I thought he was gonna do what dave used to do and destroy his set
Ok …. Fair enough … will rethink the title next time but mind the quotes on destroy 😜😜😜
SAME
Likewise lol I was pleasantly surprised. Thanks for posting this!
Same, cause I'm used to seeing destroys it but not in quotation Mark's so when I saw "destroys" I thought he broke the kit lol
I kinda wanted him go do well, get up and destroy the set and say "I hate playing with amateurs" I woulda died
You know, people rag on Dave, but I don't know any other rock star that regularly does this cool shit, and is so down to earth.
Dude's a fuckin gem!
He’s one of very few survivors left of the Grunge era. He’s a legend.
Who rags on Dave? He seems pretty well thoroughly beloved.
Who the hell rags on Dave?
Dave is starting to get Betty White status.
This is why I love Foo Fighters. Not saying that other bands didn't do the same but this band truly cares about their fans. Dave broke his leg during concert, fix it up minimally, and continue the concert with chairs. They let a little kid perform, the kid plays enter sandman, Dave gives the kid his guitar. And now this...
Wow. When Dave Grohl says your pretty f ###ing good. That’s. Huge compliment. Well done.
If anyone wants to know, his name is Richard Greenbury.
thinking about how Taylor passed last night and how this guy probably feels about the whole situation...watching this again because of it
He probably played these songs in his room daily. Its like he's on stage but has the comfort of being lost in his room. There just happens to be his idols and fans lost in his room with em this time.
“How’s the show lad”
“Ah it was great man got on stage played with Dave n all had a blast”
“You whaaa…”
