I'm not sure what you mean by "aftermarket". Aftermarket to me means it's not made by product manufacturer but by a third party. I'm thinking of auto parts. The S74 packaging states "Genuine Factory Parts" and has the PF logo. Regardless of part #, both valves are exactly the same just the packaging is different. Buy whichever is cheaper.
@@mtbbiker6401 Spoke with a rep from Price Pfister and he confirmed these two are the same. He stated some retailers carry the S model and it is not a Pfister product. Indeed "aftermarket" or whatever you like to call it.
@@Auburn7543 Thanks for the update. Originally I read the valve was made in Mexico in the past but both of these now state Made in China so maybe pfister moved production to China and created a new model #. Who knows but both of these valves appeared to be exactly the same. 974-2920 is the part number on the pfister website. Since pfister no longer sells Avante products, I assume pfister has a licensing arrangement with a manufacturer to produce them and maybe from multiple factories. Amazon typically sells the 974 for $14 and the S74 for $24, so save $10 and purchase the 974. Just make sure you purchase a "pfister" product with the metal inner tube. Other brands like Danco have all plastic design which may fail sooner. I installed a Danco in a guest bath that never gets used but will most likely swap it out for an original at some point.
I bought the S model. The packaging is branded as Price Pfister, has the same 800 number and company address for PF and states "Genuine Factory Parts". The rep you talked to said that is not a Price Pfister product? That is very strange. @@Auburn7543
EXACTLY what I was looking for! Going through a replacement right now.
Exact clarification I was looking for. Thank you!
974 is suppose to be OEM and the S is aftermarket.
