      @@MeccaEl So you didn't need that throttle body after all? I am looking for a vid because my throttle lever doesn't seem to be making contact with the plate for about a full inch. And engine running slugish. Same tacoma as that one.

    • @MeccaEl
      @MeccaEl  3 года назад +2

      @@brianh2662 hey Brian. No, I didn't need the replacement throttle body. If you can locate your vehicles service manual, there's a test you can perform, to properly determine whether yours is functioning properly. Using a multimeter, and knowing the ohm rating of the motor that controls the throttle, you can do an ohms check on yours to see if it's at its recommended specs.

      Just a note, the left cam and right marks are with you sitting in the truck. I don't think it really matters, as they would measure the same distance apart, anyway.The factory manual advises only turning the crankshaft clockwise, as you are facing it. I've done this job 3 times on my 04 Tacoma, and had to back up the crank 1 notch to get the belt on properly, when it went on and I pulled the pin, all timing points lined up.I don't know why they advise not backing up the crank, but I just wanted you to know that to save any future problems. You're a smart, careful guy, and I enjoyed watching you figure this out. Peace, brother

    I noticed that you had the timing belt on backwards. If you look at the cam "cog wheels" they are stamped with R and L (relative position from the driver's seat). The markings on the timing belt show R and L relative from standing in front of the engine. I don't know that it matters, but it's something that I just noticed. Good vid man. I just bought an '01 Tacoma and am about to tackle the timing belt replacement. It has 181k miles on it with what looks like the original timing belt.

    • @MeccaEl
      @MeccaEl  6 лет назад +2

      Awesome purchase. If possible, purchase a Timing Belt Kit. The timing belt isn't directional, and the timing lines are meant for ease of installation. What I would NOT do, is after installation, reinstall the timing belt in the opposite direction, if it had to be taken off.

      Todd Schwartz you’re right. If you look under cam cigs they are marked, it’s backward if you’re standing in front of the vehicle. The drivers side is the left, the passenger side the right

    Good video man. I know mine needs replacing. I was thinking about this yesterday. Now I run across your video. Sixth sense kind of thing. I'm also here to tell you that when the 3.4 originally came out, they had some issues with the crankshaft woodruff keys. I bought one of the first ones off the lot here locally back in '96. The truck ran beautifully, but I put a lot of miles on it in the first 6 months (26,000). As my luck would have it, the crankshaft pulley started to loosen up and wobble while I was in Lake Tahoe with my new bride. We were driving back to Oregon and stopped at a dealership to see if they could see what was wrong with it. They didn't even have parts to fix the issue. I fought Toyota for 3 months before they made it right. The truck remained in Fallon Nevada for those 3 months, at a Toyota dealership. I learned Toyota does not treat their customers very well and swore I'd never buy another new Toyota vehicle. Still have not, but I do own a 2004 Tacoma and 2000 Tundra 4x4. My 04 Tacoma is sluggish and I was wondering why yesterday, this is probably going to be something I check out first. A new timing belt and water pump wont hurt either. Thanks for the video.

My own Tacoma (2001) is running strong at 310,000 miles and the service life of the original Starter and Alternator finally gave out around the 300k mark and RUclipsRS like yourself helped me replace both. @billw5235 5 лет назад

      @@MeccaEl I am assuming that the 98 Limited I am using for this swap had this issue and this why I think that. The bolt holding the harmonic balancer, the shaft, the key and the keyway all had red Loctite on them. So I built a tool to hold the harmonic balancer in place (the engine is on an engine stand, or else I would have just used a long breaker bar , the frame and turned the key). Plus the tool is 60 bucks and I was only going to use it once. I am going to tell you how I made the tool because it may help someone who watches your video down the road. I got a 3" X 3' X 3 1/6" piece of steel, two 3/8" bolts, 4 nuts and 2 lock washers, I drilled 3/8" hole 2 inches down and 1.5" across then drilled another hole 3" down from there again right in the middle at 1,5", I then used 24 mm socket 1.5" in the middle between the two existing holes, so I would have a hole for my socket to go thru. I cut the heads off of the bolts so I could use the unthreaded part of the bolts inside the holes in the harmonic balancer, while putting a nut on either side of the steel with one side held in place with a lock washer as well. Once I got the bolts in place I tightened the outside bolt down. Then a sturdy 1/2" drive socket and a cheater bar and I was able to break thru that red Loctite. So I got the water pump and the thermostat in and will do the rest this weekend all new seals, pulleys, and tensioner and get a new oil pump in. I can't take all of the credit for the tool I saw a picture on one of the Toyota forums, but it had no dimensions. But it saved me 40 bucks which I can put towards parts. Once again thanks for your help.

      Just take your time and once you have everything reassembled, hand crank the engine a couple of times to make sure the piston and valves don't meet. The only resistance you should feel is compression resistance, which sounds like a slow leak. If the crank bolt isn't cross threaded, I wouldn't change it. If it's backing out, use dot of Loctite. Hope this helps and thanks for viewing and subscribing 👍

    You dont have to remove the compressor. You can get to the hydraulic tensioner bolt with about 12" of ratchet extensions & a swivel. Get under the vehicle & put the socket & swivel rt beside the oil pan & you will be able to remove & reinstall the hydraulic tensioner WITHOUT removing the a.c. compressor.

On the road once I'm going it runs great. I cleaned the throttle body, replaced the MAF and IAC but I am still experiencing rough idle. My next project was to replace the coolant temp sensor and try to purge all the air out of the coolant system. I hate being a parts changer. After watching what you diagnosed I might do a time belt/water pump change and check the cog. My water pump isn't leaking, why do you suggest putting a new one when you change the timing belt. Thanks for sharing and helping the rest of us brighten our mechanic "light saber" up a little bit (light meaning accurate, and "saber" meaning "knowledge of things" in Spanish).
    I especially appreciate this is not an obvious problem, so it can save a ton of troubleshooting time. I have a Tacoma that has a low, rough idle, and it vibrates horribly at high revolutions. I will check to see if this could be a contributing factor. Did you use any lubricant when you tapped in the Woodruff key, or did you clean it up and do it dry? Thanks again.

    Awesome man! perfect job! im just sitting here wondering why toyota designed the cog to only sit half way over the woodruff key. If the woodruff key was fully covered by the cog i think it would have less chance to wear as there would be more surface area in contact with the cog.
    Again, awesome diagnosis and job. Keep it up!

    • @MeccaEl
      @MeccaEl  6 лет назад +2

      Michael Laz I was thinking that exact same thing. Maybe it was intended to wear? The engineers create it, and R&D breaks it.

      It also drives the crank pulley, so it has to stick out for that. This is why it's important to torque crank bolt to 217 ft. lbs

    • @MeccaEl
      @MeccaEl  5 лет назад +2

      No, I didn't add any info on the crank bolt torque specs. In most cases, a dot of blue thread lock, and an 1/8th of a turn passed hand tight is all that's needed.

Also, do you know if that sort of cog wear is normal? How many miles did that truck have on it? I will definitely be watching for this wear as I do my own timing belt, very grateful for showing us the way!
