there are a couple other reasons to mount them like he did
It allows more air to cool the coil and it removes the mass from inside the speaker box giving you more unrestricted volume inside.
plus you have easy access to the wiring.

@@markmartin1263I’m not sure about the more cooling… the air inside the ported box is being cycled enough that it’s going to be the exact same temperature as ambient, and that air is being pushed and pulled around like crazy so it’s actually kinda blowing on the motors. Not to mention the sun being on the cone vs the motor.

It's a neat explanation, but it's not true. Even with a massive sub, the woofer cone behaves as a pure piston at the lower frequencies. The only time the non-pistonic behavior of a cone is an issue is at frequencies where there could be destructive interference. At bass frequencies, that's just not a thing. The reason that smaller subs sound more "crisp" or "tight" or "faster" whatever other adjective you want to use is purely a matter of the frequency response. The higher resonant frequencies of a typical smaller sub result in less low bass output (even when you tune it way too low like he's doing) and that reduced output at the very low frequencies creates a subjectively different sound that people equate to all the different adjectives described above. It's the same reason why people will say a set of ported 8" subs "sound like 12s". Well, because they basically do... a lot of ported 8s, when tuned for an ideal response (not low-tuned for SPL), will tend to sound pretty similar to a set of sealed 12s because their response characteristics are similar. Likewise, take a set of ported 12s, eq them to roll the low end off a little bit, and suddenly they'll start sounding more like what people typically associate with 10s or 8s. It's all frequency response.

My only thing, for someone so technical about cone control, you would think he would know 1/2 ohm hurts dampening which would effect SQ which he was paying attention to. 8" isn't just cone control from cone flex, but 8" has a lighter cone which is easier to control. More control means more detail. More detail = better sound. 10" is pretty much the best all around since most have a broader frequency response but still light enough to keep control. 12" is about max for SQ.

I know they have great output now, especially compared to the ones when I started out in the late 80s/early 90s but its just an aversion I can't overcome. I have always stuck with 12s, 15s, and 18s but have heard some impressive builds with 10s and 8s. There is a guy at work with a Taramps 8k on a couple of 10" Sundowns (not sure of the model, he had it all done at a shop and didn't know much about any of his equipment) but it really has me thinking of going with something smaller just to see what I can do with it. This has to be the lowest I have seen 8s play. Really nice setup, love the truck too.

I have a single ZVX-8 inverted in a big box running on 800 watts RMS. Let me tell you, that thing hits! It's much louder and cleaner sounding than the previous 2 12's I had. And he's right about the sound being a lot crisper. The bigger the woofer, the more distortion you have. 8 inch is more for audiophiles, while bigger woofers are for pure bassheads. That's why factory premium sound systems tend to use 6.5-8 inch woofers. They are better for audiophile listeners.

The example of the small subwoofer and rhe piece of paper is not so simple.
The stiffness of the cone, the width of the voice coil, the stiffness of the surround and even the weight of the cone itself (plus other factors) will come into play. So it is not a simple 1 factor thing.
Yes the idea is true overall but there are factors that could negate the effect a fair bit.

Relative to the exact same line of speakers. They tend to be made the same, with the smaller speakers having more stiffness.
He's just spending more money for the clarity. 4 x 8" isn't going to move as much air as a single 15" and costs more, but it will be more clear.
If you have an old amp you can do both using some sealed speakers for clarity with one big speaker ported to shake the doors off. Tune and EQ for the sealed speaker and have the knob for the big one.

It's size of preference. 8 inch subwoofers are good for smaller compact vehicles. Not everyone can fit a 12 or 15 into a small vehicle without sacrificing lots of space . Having a big ported box is the key of a good sounding system, no matter what size the woofer is. And having them inverted like this guy does also helps out with the lows.

Would you still have those speakers down firing inside the box or do you reverse the phase so they're pushing back?

Long as all subs mounted the same it doesn’t matter 👍 just gives more box space internally

Why do the turn their subs upside down like that, do they push more air or something?

Most ppl invert, to add more volume to their box. Inverted subs take less displacement. Bigger box, generally more output.
This guy did, it for aesthetics.

I ran 4 sq 8s on 3600rms @ .5 for a while, was def impressive but still like my 12s and 15s, will only run the non pressed pulp cones tho. Now days im running minimal setups, rt now single death penalty 12 on a jp23, but got 2k to the doors lol
