  • @thomasjay975

    If u put too many nails, the nails will split apart the wood grain. Reducing the hold ur nails have on the wood. Especially if they are clustered together. It will significantly weaken the integrity of your build. But at the same time u dont want too little. 3 to 4 structural nails/screws are all u need.

    As a nail gun technician, each nail shot, destroys the lumber. If you put 18, you have weakened it tremendously. 4 nails is enough for 4” or more. Bigger nails rather than more nails.

  • @stephenlehr6020
    @stephenlehr6020 Месяц назад +14

    I would do 5, 4 corners and one in he middle, you want 1.5" of penetration in the post, minimum, more if they are smooth shank nails. Your vertical blocks need/can use more, two columns of nails 3" to 4" on center, starting and ending 3" from the ends (or until the clip is empty, lol). Have a good one!!

    Okay so for post framing with nails or screws, the strongest nailing/screw pattern is a five star. Thats two at the top, two at the bottom, and one centered between them. It is the strongest because there are always 2 fasteners supporting all the pressure from the gravity and wind.

    Back in 1984 when l was on a framing crew we had this college kid that worked with us part time. He did his essay on the strength of a 16 sinker nail. His research turned up information that a 16 sinker had the sheer strength of 2000#'s. Now that's not pull out, thats sheer. Most framing nailers use a 12. Not sure if they would be common or sinker. Sinker is the same length but skinnier. Both can have an adhesive on them that heats up from friction when driven in. you can also get ringshanks too. That would resist pullout as well. Dont know if this helps you but it's what l know. Maybe someone else can help further.

    Remember that too many nails will potentially split the wood. Put blocks under everywhere like you did and put 2 nails top a bottom and stagger every 12” in between. And 4-5 nails in the horizontal connection. Use 31/2” galvanized nails. You’re good now.

    Tear it down and start over, you've already weakened the wood beyond repair. Like someone else suggested, one nail to hold, then hot-dipped galvanized bolts, nuts, and washers. My grandfather built a large barn in this manner and it's still standing straight & tall 101 years later.

    Believe it or not but that many naiks in one board can actually weaken it and cause it to break apart at the nailed area ... Its almost like its been perforated like a piece of paper... However , due to the leverage generatsd at the bottom from the weight added as you build , i woukdnt use just 3 nails either but maybe 6-8 ... It really just all depends upon the structure and whats it going to be used for and for how long according to its mass and the materials being used ....

    Well 16 penny nails are about 5 cents per nail.
    Nailer nails are a bit smaller in diameter.I would use 3 1/2 LG ring ring shank and stagger the nails vertically, 3 should be good but 4 is ok,make sure you stagger them or you will encourage splitting uour post.

  • @patvine1293
    @patvine1293 Месяц назад

    There is actually a mathematical equation to answer your question. Take the total weight of the lumber (in pounds), multiply it by the number of feet the two boards bisect from the ground and divide by gravity (32.2 feet per second squared) to determine the nails required in pounds. For example. Attaching a 12’ 2x4 to a 10’ 4x4 bisecting 6 feet above grade will require 3 pounds of nails to properly secure the joint. Also note the number of nails per pound is normally found on the packaging.

    On the corner posts were you have more nailing opportunities I'd put in 5 nails in a x pattern were you butt the two 2×6's together on middle posts were they share a post 3 nails in each 2×6. Over nailing will just weaken the 2×6 then it has more opportunities to split. That is how I was taught. I did framing construction for a few years professionally for some companies in my younger days. 2×4's 2 nails. My first thought was holys-it you're nailing to much!
