      I am addicted to yarn. I love to crochet. I have over $800 stash. When I want to make something and no money I go to my storage. I have about 18 containers with yarn. I've been collecting for 9 years. Plus I have a huge box of hooks and knitting needles. I'm older and don't go many places so it's really a sanity saver.

    @sarahpan DO NOT WASH IT!!! I'm sorry to bring you the bad news when you did such a good job, but you didn't use yarn, you used roving, thats the stuff that gets turned into yarn. Unfortunately this cardigan isn't going to hold together for a long time and it's going to pick up a lot of stuff. Importantly if you wash it you will felt it, it will turn into a solid, stiff piece and will also shrink a little. Maybe think of this as a practice run if you really love it or as a photography piece if you don't want to remake it. Keep it inside a protective bag when storing.

      I literally just watched knitters explain how wasteful using rover is with this trend. You get to use it a few times? dirt particles easily stick to it, it's easily gonna break apart, and when you wash it, it's gonna get really stiff. So yeah, according to her, PRICEY is the word because after spending all that money, it's gonna go straight to the trash.

  • @simplybeingelle

    Hi! Just FYI you need to be very careful with this sweater. The yarn you are using is basically roving (unspun yarn). Hand wash in cold water. Don't wring it out. Lay flat to dry. If you snag on something be very careful. Don't pull. You'll break the yarn. You did a good job. Just be careful with this sweater. If you are it will last a long time.

    I doubt the yarn will hold up over time, theres and yours, because the yarn doesnt have any structure, yarn like that, which is basically just the hair itself, will break down and fall apart. Those chunky knit blankets and sweaters end up being way to expensive to make with not much pay off. At least they are cute tho!!

If you look up super-chunky yarn on eBay/Amazon/yarn shops then you should be able to find this type of yarn to use. If it looks like two strands of yarn twisting around each other, then this is a more sturdier yarn to use for your project - hope this helps!

    Hi Sarah, you did a really good description of the process, and I hope the viewers who are also new to yarn crafting took note of all the things you learnt along the way. Making things from yarn can be very pleasurable and you dived right in, and hopefully if you do any more you will use the experience gained from this piece eg, use yarn as opposed to roving, measure yourself to get a better idea of what size you need to make, have an idea of the way the pieces fit round you, and use a yarn type that you find comfortable on your skin, and something that you find pleasurable to work with long enough to complete a piece. The stitches you made were very even which is part of the charm of a well made piece, and you have a good eye for colour (liked the way the sweater toned with your hair!) The need to have something immediately is something crafters have to overcome as the key to making something yourself is delayed gratification (!) but the payoff is you will end up with something unique to you and the satisfaction of having made it yourself. Well done for completing your item, not something everyone achieves first time out, hope you will now feel confident enough to tackle other projects. Making stuff is good for the soul, enjoy!

    -it is hella weak, it’ll break apart super easily

    How does this hold up so far? The "yarn" doesn't seem like it has much structure. In those cases knitted or crochet pieces will end up like trash quite fast. I hope, in this case it does hold up after so many hours of work put in.

    You could make a collar to go round the neck. It would sit better on you then and feel more comfortable. You have given me an idea that I can use for the wool I have

    It tuned out so good! But sadly if worn too much it will fall apart easily since the fibers of the wool don’t have any structure. It’s downfall of using that loose chunky wool yarn.

    How do you prevent felting and misshapen products after cleaning them with unstructured yarn?

    • @orilliavail1380
      @orilliavail1380 3 года назад

      Washing in the sink with warm water and shampoo then laying the finished garment flat, to dry, will help prevent miss-shaping. It is also the best way to care for home knit/crochet.
      As for felting, I would not have picked that yarn for that cardigan as it would felt really quickly due to lack of structure, especially in the armpit aria (no offence Sara) sweet can/ will increase the risk of felting.
      If you are going to do this pick a yarn with structure (twists in the wool) research the type of fibre you are using Marino (sheep wool) vs. a polyester yarn will behave differently (content and linen are used in a lot of summer patterns) . And make shore it’s lose around the armpit.
