I worked 3rd shift for over 40 years. I went to that because I was mostly awake at night and I loved it! You either love or hate night shift I found but for me I loved it. I’ve been retired now for 10 years and find I am usually up till 3 or 4 Am than sleep till 10 or 11 in the morning. It works for me
Yes!! Same here. The judgy people who say “ you sleep until 11:00” get a smile from me saying “ you were asleep at 3:00 am?” Then I wink and say everyone is different😉
I love staying up late and sleeping until 10:00 am. Been that way my whole life. It was a struggle for years while in schools, working 8-5 jobs and then with having kids. Loving it during retirement. You do what you gotta do.
I never thought I could be morning person until i discovered this channel a couple of years ago. The 2 best pieces of advice came from her in past videos 1. Morning people don’t just pop up out of bed like a Disney princess immediately full of energy. (This was mind blowing to me) 2. You will NEVER feel like doing it-so just do it. These 2 bits of info literally changed my outlook & therefore my behavior. I used to be a night owl & HATED it, but now I’m a natural early bird:)
I would love a whole video on food shopping, making a grocery list, and staples. It’s so daunting to me and I get burnt out with other day to day tasks
Avoid eating before bed, sleep earlier, avoid artificial light and blue light? OOPS… Not me watching this on my phone at midnight while eating a bag of chips 😅 I need to make some changes here
This is one of my goals this year. I was a stay at home mom for 5 years and now that I’ve gone back to a 9-6 job I feel like mornings are so busy and I feel like I’m always behind. Thank you for the good tips!
Can and should are not the same. I can function as a morning person, but I’m chronically unwell if I do. Instead of trying to force everyone into one box, it would be way better to work toward a society that supports everyone’s health needs, which are ultimately what a circadian rhythm is.
I agree. Retired teacher here. School used to start at 7:45, which was hard not only on me but even more on my teenage students. Now, in retirement, I have to get up early again on schooldays to get my grandson ready. But there are days when I go straight back to bed for a couple of hours!
I end up being my own worst enemy if I have to get up and go to work I do, if I can sleep in sometimes I will. It comes down to the person's choice. I believe if you want to change something in your life you will! A little advice from someone who it's working for is amazing either way. Kallie you're amazing keep doing what you're doing!
I really appreciate your videos like this one, where you explain the reasoning behind your suggestions or life-hacks. All the information you just gave regarding our sleep patterns, circadian rhythms, etc., I have learned before through various credible sources; citing peer-reviewed studies, and applying science-based evidence, but I love the way you are able to extract the biggest takeaways and present them in such a concise manner. Thank you! I find it very helpful!😊
I work 3rd shift. I wish I could stay on that schedule all the time. I love 3rd shift, but it's hell trying to do things during the day in my day off. I stay on a night schedule as much as possible. I agree that a routine is super helpful. ❤❤
WOW. I wish I had heard such a simple and concise video about three years ago. 😅 I use to be the “I’m not a morning person” type of woman. I learned all of the tips you just stated over the past three years. - I wake up at 5.30am every day, even weekends. - I have breakfast/shower/get ready - I alternate between going to the gym and cleaning my place/getting tasks done - by 8am I feel AMAZING and ready to go work. IT IS POSSIBLE, PEOPLE. The hardest part is actually going to bed before early. I still need to work on that because I do think I need an extra hour of sleep at least every night… PS- I am not a mom yet so maybe I won’t be acting so tough when that happens 😅
I found this video fascinating! I am a born night owl, and have ALWAYS had trouble falling asleep, once I get to sleep I am good. But falling asleep has always been hard, even as a baby… and I mean laying awake for 3-4 hours a night regularly trying to fall asleep hard. I have seen sleep doctors and it’s believed I may have issues producing natural melatonin. I have been taking supplement melatonin for years, which has helped greatly, but is not enough to get a good sleep pattern going and get me up at a decent time each day. All this information is so interesting and helpful.
Thx Kallie! I have to ask. Is your husband on the same sleep schedule as you? That's a constant battle in our house. And, Daylight Saving Time always messes me up. I've noticed lighting a candle really improves my energy in winter. I will definitely work on my morning routine. Love this video
Most of the year I work a second shift schedule (ah academia) then flip back to "normal people" hours when classes are not in session. Over the years I have gotten some handle on my sleep schedule but just this past holiday I got myself something which is the last piece I need. A sunrise alarm clock. I sleep in pitch black and the gradual light at my wakeup time makes it much easier to get out of bed soon after the alarm. Also, circadian is pronounced SIRcadian. :)
I'm in the middle. I can neither stay up late nor get up early! I'd like to get up early, but I need my sleep. I aim to be asleep by 10.30pm, but there's no way I'm seeing 5am especially at weekends. I do have a morning and evening routine though and I agree these really help.
I am also a mom of four, ages 6 and younger. I don’t have a routine quite as organized as you, but one child wakes up to poop at about 530 AM each day and that usually starts my day, haha. I sometimes get some quiet time alone first thing in AM before the kids come down, and it’s divine when the house is quiet and I can make my tea, read, or accomplish something. “The miracle morning” was a great book on this topic. 😊
I must be an exception to the rule. I'm 57 and I consider myself both an early bird and a night owl. I function extremely well with very little sleep. I have found that even when I am sick, sleeping more than 6 hours a day makes me very, well, not functioning at my "peak". It has been this way for about 40 years. I often function better with only having had 2 hours of sleep than with 6, 7 or 8 hours of sleep. Last night I went to bed about 12:30am, woke up with ease at 4:45am and do not need caffeine to function or be awake. Do I get tire? Sure, I'm 57, but I am overweight, over worked and often have boundless energy without the use drugs or stimulants. And I was a single mom for most of my child's childhood. :-)
This is also supposed to be a genetic trait. I believe it’s called something like short brain sleepers and long brain sleepers. Nobody actually requires the 7.5-8 hrs. Most people actually need either 5ish or 9ish hours
Thank you for this excellent presentation! this is going to help a lot of people. I am a Celt and we are known to be troglodytes. Until I leaned into my Neanderthal DNA I struggled with sleep/wake cycles. I typically don't use lights at night and I get sleepy about an hour after full dark and wake in the hour before sunrise. It feels like heaven
I would say I do and do not agree with some of what you said. I had a family member that tried for YEARS to be a ‘morning/daytime’ person and could never get that to work for him and was having life and job issues. He changed to working a 2nd and then a 3rd shift job and it was life-changing for him!! He just will always function better having an opposite schedule from most of the world.
@@KarMa-ws3llnot sure, but our rhythms are stimulated by exposure to UVA/UVB/UVC… so prolly still prefer his later in the day pattern? But I’m honestly just conjecturing.
@@KarMa-ws3ll Unfortunately it doesn't work like that - I wish! The amount of times I've tried to use the change in time zone to my advantage, you would think I would finally learn it just doesn't work. After a while your body just adapts to the new time zone and go back to the exact same patterns. It's kind of like how every year I try to use daylight savings change to move my son's bedtime an hour earlier. Unfortunately it just doesn't last more than a week or so.

Step 1. Don't have small children. Can confirm, as someone who used to be a morning person my whole life before I had kids, this is a key component of this whole process. Maybe once my kids are older, I can get enough sleep to feel that way again.
I have to leave for work at 7:30. I can’t even manage to get myself out of bed until 7:10. How I’m able to get myself ready and out the door with 2 kids? No clue but I’m never late for work 😂
Kallie I think you’re just a morning person who hasn’t admitted it yet. Lol I won’t even wake up at 5am to go to Disney World, let alone to work out or do chores. But I’ll gladly do the dishes or a workout at 2am. Lol
Exactly, why bother doing anything? If god wants you to have something, he'll physically put it in your hands while you're sleeping. If he wanted you to have food, he'd put food in your stomach without you having to eat it. What a strange way to give up on yourself and your goals.
