Hi Gary... Just getting into this and needed to know exactly how to set this up... I learned about the bushing adapter on the fly from another video but did't know about the Quick change adapter part of it until I started delving into learning to use my new PC 4216 ... I want to thank you very much for your time passing on this info... A couple of questions that came to mind were answered on the two previous comments... Great demo. Never used a bushing in a router before and had to make a new base plate to use porter cable bushings. With all the videos out there, it works great. I used a 1/2 inch drill bit for a centering pin.

Thank you gary for doing this video. It helped me set up my quick change adapter that came from Bosch with no instructions. I guessed it right but the centering was something I did not do first. Likely saved me from screwing up some material.

Many thanks, Gary! I have developed my wood shop over the last couple of years and have reached the point where I need to make some drawers for a rolling cart in the shop. I planned to use dovetail joints, purchased a Porter-Cable Dovetail Jig, and other items, only to find I needed a means to attach the guides to my Bosch router. I bought the Bosch 1617 combo kit back last October and ended up putting the 1617 in my Woodpecker router table and wanna leave it there so now I have the plunge base and no router so I bought another 1617 router w/o the plunge base and will use it for that. So I was needing to get some guide bushings and came across the Bosch set and saw ur video on it so I went ahead and ordered a set. Thanks 👍

IMHO I would center the baseplate after you installed the guide bushing. This would negate any deviations in manufacturing defects regardless of how minimal they might be. I realize the centering cone couldn't be used on the smaller of the bushings but may on the larger ones. A smaller one would be needed. Which I believe they are available. Thanks for the video.

EXCELLENT demonstration, and explanation. I've been using the centering cone on the wrong side of the base all this time.

You can use the cone either direction and achieve the same result. I personally prefer to use it the other way. Reason being is it "sandwiches" the base so it's less like to move. Important thing is that you leave the cone in one position and don't remove it a bunch.
@@donkeydiehard879 Thank you! Thanks for your comment. Excellent point. I have seen it proposed both ways for different reasons. I bought two of the cones to use it positioned each way. I use it differently for different applications and uses. For me in production set ups I didn't want to be changing it a lot as the cone is plastic and can cause wear over time each time you change it. Thanks for the tip! 👍
There’s no manual for the cone, however you can find it’s section in the manual for your router!
@@GaryLundgrenCrafts yeah, I had the same idea with 2 cones lol.
I just had to make a router table insert plate, as my old router table top had an oddball size (11-⅜ × 16-½). So I bought a ¼" sheet of aluminum and routed my own insert plate... with my 1 functioning arm... talk about a nightmare!!! Lol.
When I got to the insert ring in the insert plate, I was able to sandwich my router, centered, and route out a ⅛" deep, 4" wide lip, and then my 3" wide through opening.
Only having 1 arm made it nerve racking as I had tolerances that couldn't be off in any way. In the end, it's not perfect, but it is functional, and centered perfectly.
Without the centering cone, it'd have been way tougher and way worse in appearance lol.
You can make this centering tool on your wood lathe .

FYI, the four countersunk holes on the base plate directly adjacent to the four screws at 3:36 can be used with the flathead screws that come with the router to center the baseplate to the axis of the collet. At least that's what I've learned...I haven't checked to see how perfect it is yet.

I have this router. Mine has the adapter plate always mounted on. I just got the piece so i can use the bosch or harbor freight bushing kit 15$. I have centering tool too. I didnt need to center my base as it was close enough. I used a .50 bit in the .530 ID bushing. It didn't rub hand turning but did hit the brass at motor start up but then doesn't. The OD of this brass bushing is .625". It fits very nice and tight in the adapter bushing. Did I do something wrong? I am disappointed the Harbor Freight bushings have different lengths throats so your templates cannot all be 1/4 inch or something. I've made templates using the outside of my router base but never tried a router guide I guess I need to watch more RUclips videos . thanks Gary. I will go watch that one you recommended

Good video Gary, saved me a lot of frustration trying to figure it out. I have a Bosch 1617EVS just like yours. I still have a problem though. With the adapter in place on the router and using a 1/2" shank dovetail bit along with bushing guides that came with my Porter Cable dovetail jig, the router bit will not extend far enough from the bottom of the router. The 1/2" collet hits the bushing guide preventing it from extending the depth I need. Is the fix simply to buy a longer shank 1/2" bit?

Yes it could but depending on what you route on a daily basis it will gum up bad and not work easily.

The cone should be mounted the other way , the way you did it you could misalign again when tightening the screws (unless you know how much you have unscrewed each screw which is almost impossible). Pushing the cone against the base eliminates that :) Thank you .

Thank you! I believe you are right, especially for plunge bases. The base in this video I used was a fixed base. I think it can be centered either way for a fixed base. But as you say, from the top for plunge bases would be best. Thanks!
@@GaryLundgrenCrafts @3:50 you have the base locking lever in the unlocked position, I don't know about these things so I gather it doesn't make the adjustment inaccurate? My worry is that when clamping the base to the motor it can change the center position slightly?

Is it ok to leave the quick change part in the router when not using the bushings? Just subscribed to your channel.
Thank you! I guess you can leave that in so long as it provides clearance for any bit you are using. I take mine out as I use my router for a variety of purposes.
Gary... Thanks for your reply on my last comment. I have another question... Once the bushing adapter is installed, can it be left in place even when NOT using the bushing guides.. You know.. for applications when the guides aren't being used.. ??
Thanks! I would recommend not leaving the guide bushing in place when there's no need for it. It does create a an edge that can cause your bits to not perform as they should. If you want to leave that in place I would suggest using an extra router for other work. I have three. Regular size such as this Bosch. A DeWalt compact, and a palm router. My Bosch stays in the table. I use the others for any handheld work with 1/4" shank bits. 🙂
Bruce Walters ... If you are asking about ability to leave the quick-change adapter in place while doing router work that does not require guide bushings, yes, you can do that. It's on the router side of the base plate, away from the work.
I was disappointed to see how sloppy the Porter Cable bushing guide fitted to the Bosch adaptor @9:00 You went to the trouble of centring the base plate, but the poor fit of the Bosch RA1100 adaptor appeared to reintroduce a good 0.5mm of possible offset. I'd find it difficult to live with that. It is also disappointing that it looks like the only way to get the RA1100 adaptor is to buy the Bosch RA1128 Template Guide kit. If you intend using screw on Porter Cable guide bushings, then the rest of the Bosch Template kit is redundant.

Gary: excellent instruction. My specific issue with the RA adapter to utilize the PC bushing guide for 1/2” dovetail bit. With the bushing mounted in a bosch 23EV series, the dovetail bit that came with the PC jig, is too short and doesnt reach the height gauge. Adjusting the bit in the collet for proper length, only half of the bit shank is seated. Makes no sense to me. If on the other hand i use the bushing that is in the bosch kit, its 1” long?? Any help from those watching or Gary mightbprovided some guidance -

I find this in Amazon.USA: "The template guide set works with many Bosch routers, including the 1613Aevs, 1617-, 1618-, 1619- and mr23-series routers, as well as the plunge bases for Bosch palm routers." So, it is compatible.

I guess I thought most woodworkers who use a router knew about guide bushings and their use. This video is to help some who struggle with setting them up. I can be a bit tricky. I didn’t cover the basics as there are thousands of excellent videos out there on that subject. I did a quick search for “router bit guide bushings” and came up with this one.

Gary, I regret that you are using the cone wrongly. It should be inserted from outside the base-plate so that the base is forced against the router and held in position firmly while you tighten the screws. This ensures perfect centering.
Than you! Excellent point! It can be used two ways and I've done both. I bought an extra to avoid wear on the assembly when switching around. Sometimes one way is better than the other, and vice versa. Thanks for the tip!
Correct, but should be done after the bushing is installed to take away any slop.
Do all of the bushings stick out the same distance past the base plate? Do you know about how far that is? I have a different base plate with a different style of quick change cushion, but they are not all the same, and some of them stick out too far for using a quarter inch thick template. Probably should have just bought this the first time instead of wasting my time with that other set that doesn’t fit back in the case anyway…
Thank you! The bushings can stick out various depths. Depends on your needs and thickness of the template or other guides you may be using. You need to buy them based on your need.
@@GaryLundgrenCrafts my rockler sign making bushing doesn’t sit flush inside of that adapter. It sits about 1/16 above the base plate. And I have to tighten it a few times so it isn’t angled a bit to one side. I don’t want to have to modify either, but I don’t know which one is causing the issue. I think I’m going to pickup that clear sub base so I can use it without an adapter and so I can see my letters I’m routing.

@@andre1987eph I found the issue to be the bushings. 2 out of my 3 kits use the same size bushing. The third sits nice and flush. I have bought the Jasper Tools clear sub base so I’m going to give that a try as well.

1) I've a Bosch 1604 router (1/4" collet) which has a base plate (Bosch Part Number 3600190500; discontinued, www.ereplacementparts.com/base-plate-p-49557.html) which makes me question: Is there the need for the Bosch RE1151 Centering Pin?
2) The 1604's base plate also makes me wonder: Would the template guide set (RA1128) and adapter (RA1129) work?
3) At about 9:00, you introduce standard Porter Cable bushing guides, but didn't include a link to them in the listed links, perhaps intentionally as I'm only now contemplating the purchase of the Porter Cable 12" dovetail jig 4216, and maybe these bushings are otherwise called by another part name (?).
4) With all of these added costs in getting my old Bosch router to work with the Porter Cable dovetail jig (4216), and uncertainty in success, I'm also wondering: Would it be prudent to buy a new router that's better suited to work with the PC 4216 dovetail jig; and if so, could you please suggest your top picks?

1 - I am not familiar with the Bosch 1604 router and how these parts would fit that. I am only familiar with the Bosch 1618 and that is the one I spoke of in this video.
2 - As I mentioned above I am only familiar with the Bosch 1618.
3- There are many sources for these standard Porter Cable bushing guides and the prices vary. So I left that to people’s own choices.
4 - My only experience is with the Bosch 1618, DeWalt 611 (compact), and a trim router. I believe any of the brand names such as DeWalt, Porter*Cable, Bosch, etc. would be good. For a dovetail jig I would recommend using a router that will accept ½” shank bits and use those for better stability.
Basically I’m not a product reviewer or a representative of any company, nor an expert. I’m a one-man-show in his garage sharing some tips I have learned with fellow woodworking enthusiasts. Thanks! 🙂

I went with the Bosch 1617 evs (variable speed is critical for setting different size diameter router bit cutters) and opted to simply buy the Bosch RA1129 and the POWERTEC 71051. Bosch is a top tier brand but sometimes they cut corners. As you can see with their template guide, the metal is very thin, and reviewers elsewhere said they broke easily. But the adapter for PC bushings is fairly robust, and the POWERTEC kit was affordable. Part of their proprietary impetus is to encourage people to upgrade old machines to newer to accommodate new accessories. So unless it says explicitly it works backward compatible (like the 1619 plunge router for example) assume it doesnt.
Inaccurate procedure. The motor was not locked (clamped) in the base. When locked (clamped) for use the centering will change.

You are using the centering guide wrong.

@@GaryLundgrenCrafts You need to put the cone on the outside, below the base plate, so that it is 'pushing' the plastic plate down tight against the base. Also, this gives way more room and does not require the router to be removed from the base to get the cone out. The way you had it, the cone is (could) prevent the plastic plate from seating tight against the base.
Thanks. That makes sense. I did it as I've so many others do it, and how I learned. But, there's other ways I'm sure, and yours may be a better way. I'll try that out. Thanks!

@@K31swiss That makes sense! Those wooden handles don't give much grip like molded plastic, textured, or rubbery ones. I have problems with dry hands and can't keep a grip well. I use hand lotion but that doesn't last long in a shop. 🙁 Thanks! 🙂
