  • HM (Hemianthus Micranthemoides) - or Pearl Weed is one of my favourite plants and you can even use it as a carpeting plant. It use to be called Micranthemum Micranthemoides and in this video I will show you how easy it is to grow with no CO2, no liquid carbon and no aquasoil aswell as how to grow it as a carpet plant.

    It takes patience to plant this with its' tiny stems, but it will take off with decent lighting and nutrients and become a great carpet with frequent pruning.
    It is much easier as a floating plant and will develop in bunches if there is not too much water movement and it finds a quiet space to congregate.

    This is NOT Hemianthus micranthemoides. It is instead the Florida native Hemianthus glomeratus. The former has not been seen for decades and is a plant of fresh water tidal shores that's probably extinct. The latter is still common today.

    I also grow Hemianthus without CO2. For him, the main thing is bright lighting🤝

      @@aarongonzalez4458 maybe your filter is too high that’s why it floats repeatedly.

    This stuff really grows quickly once it takes hold. Frequent trimming is a requirement to prevent a tank overrun by pearlweed!

    It's one of those plants that nibblers..fish that are not really plant eaters,but will nibble on plants with very tender foliage and Pearl weed is that. So,I would advise you get 2 or 3 bunches so that the nibbling is spread out and the plant can establish fast.
    Also with no ferts or Co2? Then stop making big water changes often!..It's not good for the plants in low tech situations...they like water to really "age" right. Yes,you still have to make up for evaporation and eventually do make a change of water..but on the bright side..easy on the water bill.

    My low - tec, 5 gal tank has been fully cycled for 2 months now, it is heavily planted with anubias and crypts, which are thriving, but the pearl weed is really struggling. Kind of disheartening to keep hearing how easy this plant is to grow :/

      Dwarf Sag is a good alternative.

    Great video! If I wanted to carpet pearl weed should I start trimming aggressively from the beginning once I plant them? I heard that this will teach them to grow horizontally and carpet instead of vertically like a tall plant?

    • @McMerwe
      @McMerwe  6 лет назад

      Yes, the plant will make runners if you trim often and create a carpet. Let them grow to about 2-3 cm and then trim when it reaches 4cm
