My daughter just graduated from High School and has decided to study the violin while going to college. This video was great for explaining the do's and don't's of putting Rosin on the Bow. Thank you.
Just got my daughter a brand new violin & was freaking out at the lack of sound!?! This is her first year, first week in orchestra class. I played the flute.. So... Thank you.
Very helpful, I have watched several videos on rosining and you are the first to mention the metal piece and not to touch the hair. I watched a lady who suggested to hold the hair in place while rosining! I am getting my first violin tomorrow and wanted to educate myself a bit before opening the case and laying eyes on my own violin. I will definitely be watching more of your videos for helpful info, you seem very professional.
it would be nice to see the actual rosin, which side to use on a new one, what the powder on the bow looks like etc. I'm completely new to this and am still just as lost after watching this video.
Yeah, no one cares about helping the hearing impaired learn how to play music because that's like asking a blind person to drive, or asking any kind of disabled man to be a viable husband and father for his wife and kids. People half-ass accessibility to the disabled because we have no value whatsoever. Don't worry about the captions being corrected; laughing at the Deaf will always be fashionable and in style. :)
Pirate Boy I can’t tell if this is sarcastic or serious. Anyway, if you expect the blind person to drive, you are extremely stupid. No one says a disabled person can’t be a good husband and father, you’re just making this stuff up.

I really appreciate this. Got my first stringed new instrument - a cello. Just felt so intimidated on getting my "playing" started. Your pleasant face-to-face style was so relaxing and I felt informed. Didn't realize how fragile the little cake is...
My son just bought his first violin, so this video really helped him to understand and know what he should do. Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge and wisdom!
Andrew Mercer, thank you for this video! You are the first violin tutorial that I have seen where you do not sound condescending in fact you are so encouraging and clear I applaud you. Thank you again!
I bought me a new violin recently. It came with everything you need to start the violin, a First Lesson DVD &CD, a tuner, and a lesson book. But it id not show any lesson on the DVD, on how to rosin you bow for the first time. So I thank you for this video!
I'm a luthier, and was taught by one of the best, in the U.S. He told me to first, granulate part of the rosin, into powder. Then, work the powder into the hair, with your fingers. This is the best way to do it, I've tried just going back and forth with the rosin, as shown here, and it isn't as good. It takes only about 5 minutes, but it has to be done more frequently, the next few times. And you should only put on rosin, after your bow starts slipping again, don't over due it.
I purchased an electric cello for my son so he didn’t have to bring the massive instrument home. It sounded awful because we didn’t know how to properly rosin the bow. After this video it sounded beautiful. Thank you so much
Sand paper on the rosin - best thing ever. I'm just starting out at 65 and I was wondering if the rosin was even working. I took an emery board and rubbed the top of the rosin until it turned white, then did the bow as advised in the video. Wow, what a sound I'm getting now, thank you!
Thank you so much. My daughter just received her first new violin and couldn't figure out where were going wrong. She followed your instructions and she was quickly up and playing. The video was informational, to the point and easy to understand. We will be looking for more on the violin.
My son just opened his Christmas gift and is so excited to have his own violin! We have subscribed to your video's! I can't wait to hear him play it! Thank you!
Hi Gatorftbllvr, That is great to hear!! Let me know if I can help. You and your son should check out my site AndrewViolin. There are many tutorials there and it is a good way to contact me. The link is in the description for this video. Thanks, Andrew
THANKS A LOT!!! I'm a guitarist and I got a great deal on a violin so...trying to expand a bit!! :) Had NO IDEA what I was doing when I bought it...learning slow but surely!!
Thank you! Here's two things: - Spreading the resin is an even bigger mystery after this video. I just looked at Joel Kennedy's instructions, and he specifically forbade this 15 cm at a time application method and advised to pull the bow back and forth at a steady speed from end to end. So I'm none the wiser in the middle of this mess! I believe this way, bit by bit, some spots can get twice the amount of resin. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? - I would also be interested in learning what physics works between the resin and the strings, and whether the resin dust travels from one place to another in the strings - after all, the resin is spread over the entire surface, but playing only takes place on one edge. So when playing, does the resin dust flow from one side of the string slowly to the side that produces the sound? is the whole thing due to static electricity, or how does the resin work? And how does the resin affect how the sound is produced? Don't say nobody knows. Thank you!
Thank you! I started violin when I was 7 (I'm now 30; not to say I've been playing for 23 years) and none of my instructors taught me the bare bones basics like this. They showed me how to hold my bow, and practice finger placement. That was about it. So now I'm just learning things like this and how to get the best sound, and it makes a huge difference in my playing. Thanks again!
Just bought a violin don't know how to take care of it or how to put rosin on the bow but thank you for your simple and clear instructions I was able to do that and now it works. Unfortunately i touch the hair with my fingers but now I know. Thank you so much
Tq so much for this video. I hv no experience wt a violin and just bought one for my daughter today. Ur tutorial is really helpful i got the sound in within a minute of applying rosin. Scratching the rosin gently wt coin first really helps #onehappymummy
I’m actually a first time violinist:) When I first saw the rosin, I had an inkling that it might need some coaxing... a bit of roughing up to get’r started. Never knew how to PROPERLY rosin a bow before this video:) THANK YOU! I’m a neophyte, but I’m doing my best, and thanks to folks like you I will keep her movin:)
Thank you, you just saved me from my son's major meltdown vis a vis his new violin. I know nothing about violins, but now I know how to rosin a new bow!
I’m in the same place as Leo...had no clue whatsoever how to do this. I’ve played guitar for 50 plus years, so I’m hoping it will translate at least a little? Guess I’ll find out tonight😎. So thank you Andrew for your video...it was short, to the point, and exactly what I needed!
Thanks for the question. This is normal. Just wipe it with a dry cloth each time you play. Rosin has a little acid in it and if you leave it on there for months it will dull the finish of your fiddle. Be sure to check out my site: MakeAndBreakEducation THanks again, Andrew
Played guitar and drums all my life, just picked up a 🎻 after hearing Josh vetti and got inspired bye it. So much different then the instruments I'm use to. I just wanted to say thank you for this video to get me started. BTW Beautiful instruments in the background of your video.
Hi Andrew. We must have been using the same translator in our videos. I did one on maintaining a fireplace door seal with captioning. The captioning would have led you to believe you were being told how to boil down seal blubber! Despite the obvious unintentional humor (Thank you for leaving it up BTW), I learned exactly what I needed to know as a complete neophyte sitting here today with bow in hand and no idea how to properly apply rosin. Great, useful info, and I hope, a shared chuckle with you.
Thank you very much for taking the time to post this video. I didn't know what to do with that little block in my bow case at ALL. I look forward to your other videos :D
Thanks for that. I'm an ex pro musician (Piano/Keyboards) 50 years, Thought I'd have a mess around with a fiddle. Starting from scratch. Very informative, thanks. Keep Rockin' Gus. UK.
Your video was very helpful. I watched it first than had my daughter watch it as well. She's almost 7 and was able to follow your instructions and rosin her bow! Thank you very much:)
Thank you for the instruction video Andrew. You're instruction were clear and easy to follow. I am 55 years old and have always wanted to learn how to play. Thankfully I live alone in a single family home with well insulated walls. That way no one can hear me play. :-)
I came here to find out how the first rosin should go, but I was pleasantly surprised to see you had the exact same stand as I do in the background. I was wondering how I should get the violin to hang off the stand, but it seems there isn't a problem at all.
Hi Abina, I am sure you bow is fine. that does not sound like a bad bow. You may need to add a little more rosin perhaps. As you play you will always need some amount of downward pressure, even at ppp. If you would like to video tape your self playing and send me the link, I would be happy to give you my thoughts. Just got a violin today for my birthday, snapped the E string on first tune attempt as the peg was slipping. Re strung and everything keeps going slightly out of tune as I go down the strings... At a point that I am happy and your video has now provided me the advice for the next step. Thank you
Hi Allen, Is should be just powdery white. It you see hair that is yellowish or does not look like it has rosin on it then keep applying it. Check out my site for help with recording your fiddle. Link in the video description. Hope this helps. Andrew
I got my first violin for Christmas today. Can't wait to start learning! I'm taking it to the music store before I start playing it so I get a hands on lesson of tuning it, but I have a feeling I'll be using your lessons quite often!
+KikyoCovers I got an electric guitar this christmas and all this music inspired me to pull out my old violin. I'd forgotten almost everything except how to hold bow and violin
My daughter takes violin lessons. we normally rent her violins which means they're already used. She knows WAY MORE about violins than me. We just bought her her very own brand new violin. We had this problem and i thought the violin was broken. She said i have to keep putting rosin on it. I thought shed mess it up more. Lol Your video was awesome and right on time. You both were right and I'm a dud lol
Thank you. Just got myself a violin, going to self teach myself to play it. You're my first RUclips guide on it 👍👍
me as well! just received one for Christmas. any tips and/or tricks?
@@abbyclaywell9526 Good for you! 👍 👍 Firstly, practice the fingering points by plucking.
@@abbyclaywell9526 sameee loll
Me too
Same here. But, my wife bought me this violin as a present 🎁
Got my bow rosined up for the first time. Thanks for this video.
So helpful for me! It’s my first time playing Viola, so I needed some guidance!
My daughter just graduated from High School and has decided to study the violin while going to college. This video was great for explaining the do's and don't's of putting Rosin on the Bow. Thank you.
I LIKE THE WAY YOU GOT YOUR VIOLINS NEATLY PLACED!
Just got my daughter a brand new violin & was freaking out at the lack of sound!?! This is her first year, first week in orchestra class. I played the flute.. So... Thank you.
Good Job We need more parents like you.
Very helpful, I have watched several videos on rosining and you are the first to mention the metal piece and not to touch the hair. I am getting my first violin tomorrow and wanted to educate myself a bit before opening the case and laying eyes on my own violin. I will definitely be watching more of your videos for helpful info, you seem very professional.
The sand paper on my shiny rosin hopefully will help, my hair just slides across the low friction surface and pick up little.
THANK YOU!! My violin is way louder and clearer now!
it would be nice to see the actual rosin, which side to use on a new one, what the powder on the bow looks like etc. I'm completely new to this and am still just as lost after watching this video.

I was in a instrument shop and the guy took out the rosin and yeah he broke it by mistake.. it just looked like glass and powder so...
@@adrians.v.s.k2777 yeah its basically an orangey-brown glossy glass.
what? lol. this was very easy specific steps spoken clearly and to the point.
Its a yellow-ish glass, it looks like a dried lolipop without a stick. You just rub it on your bow until you see some white powder on it
I agree, even though I have some and know what it looks like.
OMG! The captioning is amazing! I never laughed so much in my life!
Well done, thanks for the laugh tip.

thanks! My Lyra is coming today and I'm a piano player so this is foreign to me. great help!
Omg! This helped so much! I just got a Viola yesterday for the first time and I had no idea what to do.
The best guide. The important part here is that bow should be `white` when you apply rosin. Thanks.
Literally just got my first beginners bow today and yours was the first video I came across so thank you very much

I have Pirastro Goldflex. Pretty good!
Thank you for the instruction video Andrew. You're instruction were clear and easy to follow. I am 55 years old and have always wanted to learn how to play. Thankfully I live alone in a single family home with well insulated walls. That way no one can hear me play. :-)
Thank you! This helped so much!
I came here to find out how the first rosin should go, but I was pleasantly surprised to see you had the exact same stand as I do in the background. I was wondering how I should get the violin to hang off the stand, but it seems there isn't a problem at all.
Thank you it's helpful
Hi Abina,
I am sure you bow is fine. that does not sound like a bad bow. You may need to add a little more rosin perhaps. As you play you will always need some amount of downward pressure, even at ppp. If you would like to video tape your self playing and send me the link, I would be happy to give you my thoughts.
