Paul Newman made this world a better place to live in, simply leading by example. Every time I see him I have to smile immediately, can't help it, God Bless him. Beautiful tribute at the end, preceeded by funny stories about the man, not tearful ones, David skillfully concealed the obvious sadness he felt.

my high school sweetheart was living in Durango, Colorado when Paul Newman was filming Butch Cassidy. She said he would buy a six pack of Coors--with the plastic holder-- drink one then lace the empty holder space through his belt so that the other five beers were hanging from his belt and he would knock them back one at a time. I don't know if he drank a case but he definitely loved beer.

When he was filming sometimes A Great Notion in Oregon on the Siletz River, where I live, and we heard stories of how he used to race my plumber up and down Highway 101 in their Corvettes and the police never bothered them at all. They did it so late at night. Local neighbors would have them over to dinner and they would go to the local pubs and drink beer and it was just a lot of fun to have Paul Newman around.

I believe it was just prior to his death, bcuz letterman asked him “why’d you call?” At one point letterman said “So, are you still getting into fights with young guys at the track?” Something like that. Newman died shortly afterwards. Is it possible there’s another letterman episode with Newman missing from this compilation?
