I have watched so many videos on how to cut wood and yours is the first one to actually say that the knife doesn't work with the mobile app!!!!! I have been sat here for 3 hours with only 30% off the project done because I'm on the wrong setting as it wouldn't find bass wood on the materials..presumed it was because I was in the UK so selected a different wood type to see how it went..2 hours later I'm googling to find out what I've done wrong. Cricut seriously need to put in some form of instructions!! Thank you, I will be ensuring to watch more of your videos before I test out new features
Thanks for video. I wish now that I would have found your tutorials when I first started using Cricut, especially the Maker for wood cutting. The design I chose was too intricate and parts did break. I thought it was something I did, but now know what the machine can do. I will try again with a less fussy design.

First I would like to say you do a very good job on your videos. second I have found that thin strips of double sticky sided tape is a great helper for sticking things down and keeps the edge bare of your project , the only issue is that it sometimes the tape is hard to get off the project back

You will need to be on computer and not on mobile. You will also have to have a Maker or Maker 3 picked as your machine type. Basswood will also not appear if you have other types of lines on your design like drawing, engraving, etc.
Are there woods besides bassword and balsa that a Cricut can cut? I'm specifically wondering about the 3mm (~1/8") MDF that is often used for laser cutting projects. A Cricut would be a cheaper and easier option (no chance of a fire) for simpler MDF projects.

I make dollhouse miniature furniture (1/12 scale) out of Basswood using a craft knife and straight edge ruler. The measurements have to be very precise and I'm wondering if this Cricut would help me achieve more exact measurements and save me time. Does the Maker have a way to convert inches to millimeters? I had 20 images of two designs and one of the designs is wrecked as you anticipated. I would recommend (if you do another video on this, recommend people do test runs). In my case it would be 1 each of each design not 20. You might want to mention recommendations on intricate designs. Help people learn from my mistake. Now let’s see if I can salvage the design that wasn’t wrecked!!

How do you know how many passes each will need? Can you do full cut through then do part cuts at the same time? Sort of like cutting a house shape but then cutting brickwork notches afterwards?
Once you pick your material, your Cricut will do the number of passes. It only has passes for full cuts through. You would have to stop early if you only wanted to partially through.
Excellent and helpful video Angie. You mentioned that the knife blade won’t work with a mobile device such as a tablet but will the other type blades work ok with the tablet? I use an iPad. I was undecided between the scan N cut and the Cricut maker and I think after watching your instructions I’m going to go with the Cricut maker.
Yes. You will need the black housing and blade. I think there is one that comes with both. However, basswood can only be cut with the knife blade. Those are two different blades. You will need a housing with the knife blade as well as it doesn't fit on the standard housings.

@@AngieHolden Hey there! So, found out I was cutting basswood, not balsa. Thought that would fix it. So reset for Basswood. Still didn't work. Did 24 (!) passes and barely made it half-way through the 1 1/8" board. I'm thinking something is not right. Any ideas?

The only basswood I like is the Cricut brand and I have tried several. I don't like balsawood at all for my projects so I have no recommendation there.

Oh it makes no difference at all. I keep mine all the way over most of the time because I just don't like moving them around! HA! You can literally put them anywhere on the bar and you are fine.

You still have rollers on the side that grip your mat. The white rollers are for extra security. But you can literally put them anywhere on the bar and it will be fine.
Be care about what cutter you choose. I bought a Maker, and all the blades because it advertised the maker can cut hundreds of materials, including chipboard, leather and many more. Well, now even after investing in the Maker and all the blades they tell me my Design Space for iPad wont allow me to use my Knife Blade....very deceptive.
You might also want to mention that you need to calibrate the knife blade. It also would have been nice to see a design instead of shapes to show how it works on real life projects. Just giving some suggestions. Other wise, your instruction was good.

Great tutorial. For me there are far better options than this. Its pretty half the effort for standard. I'm just referring to the option of cutting with wood. Yeah not for me. The rest seems fairly decent. Is it possible to have the cutting happen at a specific point like the centre? This would be great for a geometric paper layered piece.
Guess what everyone? Not ALL Cricut Makers will cut wood. I learned that the hard way and it is EXTREMELY frustrating considering I spent the money on a Maker, invested in all the blades, including the Knife Blade. I have the Design Space for iPad and am charged the SAME amount as the Desktop, but I can’t use the knife blade nor cut ANYTHING the knife blade can cut. Cricut is a deceptive company.

Nonsense! The Cricut cannot cut wood. I bought the most expensive Cricut machine, and it couldn't cut even balsawood, unless you let it run for several hours to cut the thinnest balsawood. .....Do not buy this machine to cut anything except paper and THIN card stock. Buy a laser engraver/cutter or a CNC cutter. Those work.

I don't think you can edit the pressure when using the knife blade.

I would say check the thickness and make sure it is not over 1/16 inch.

The more complicated fonts are hard to cut. You also can't cut anything very small.

That would be waaay too intricate. It probably will not cut right anyway so you might as well stop.

Where does it talk about the passes? I can’t find it anywhere in the explorer air 2.
The Explore Air 2 can't cut this wood. However, you can go to custom material settings and see how many passes each material takes.

My guess would be those are balsa wood? You would just upload designs you already have or sketch something, take a picture, and upload that.

The maximum thickness for basswood is 1/16". There is no way it is going to cut a piece of material that thick.

Jennifer Maker says you can cut wood with the explorer also.
I don't have luck with this type of wood but do use wood veneer in my explore.

This is bass wood. You can also get chipboard but that is not real wood. I would use bass wood for best results.

Yes. It does not work with the iPad. Your machine will cut wood but you have to have a computer.
This is a bummer for those who do not have a computer. I just purchased an iPad specifically for my cricut projects. Extremely disappointed.😫

I have a brain injury and there’s lots I can’t do. Basic stuff I can’t do. Like use scissors or use a fork to eat. I bought a Cricut maker a month ago and love it. It took months to research what it does and how to use it before I spent $$$. Cricut wasn’t deceptive- you didn’t research properly

Nonsense! The Cricut cannot cut wood. I bought the most expensive Cricut machine, and it couldn't cut even balsawood, unless you let it run for several hours to cut the thinnest balsawood.
.....Do not buy this machine to cut anything except paper and THIN card stock. Buy a laser engraver/cutter or a CNC cutter. Those work.
I literally cut it all of the time. Not sure what is happening with your cuts.
Totally agree. I spent a lot of money on this just to be very upset that it does not work on wood. It's really upsetting

As we've agreed, Cricut is great for some materials; wood is not one of them.
