I really enjoyed making this episode as the Marunouchi Line is one of the line I frequently use when in Tokyo. I'm still surprised that the motivation for the scarlet red colour was from a tin of tobacco.

Glad to hear your voice again! Great video Mike. The Marunouchi line was the first Tokyo Metro line I rode back in 2006. Can’t wait to ride the new 2000 series trains when it’s safe to travel again.
Thanks, Ken. Wow, the Ginza Line was my first metro line in 2012. I got off at Ueno Station just after arriving in Tokyo and transfer to the Ginza Line to head to Asakusa, quite fitting really seeing it was the first 2.2km section in 1927. I hear ya on the 2000 series, it will be quite the ride. Very sleek indeed. Hopefully by the end of the year things will start to return to normal.
Thanks for a thoroughly enjoyable episode. The time slip at the end was really good, especially he Shinbashi entrance. Thanks for the hard work you have put in making this.
No problem at all Yolande. Yes the Nakano Shimbashi entrance was like caught in time and everything else around it was developed. I kind of like those before and after's the most. Thank for watching.
Thank you. I find them all on Japanese websites. Most of the time they are low resolution unfortunately. I think there must be a Japanese copyright law about reusing images and only low resolution are permitted.
I remember being very happy when the sine wave design was revived due to large-scale repair work on some of the 02 series trains (01F~19F) that had abolished the traditional sine wave design.
Fantastic history--thank you posting! I really appreciate the research put into this. I remember when the old 2000 series on the branch line had a single, large headlight, not the dual headlight shown here, as did Ginza line trains back then. In those days, the interior lights would briefly go out and the emergency lights come on whenever the train would pass a section where the third rail was interrupted (like at a switch). Loved the mention of how the sine wave design was born, and the image of the original interior with the pink walls! Both my Mom (who was Japanese) and I were outraged when the stainless cars were introduced, with no sine-wave design, so I am very happy to see that they have brought that look back, albeit in a very updated way. The juxtaposition between the historical photos of various street scenes with how they appear today is quite amazing.
Thanks for sharing your experiences brmnyc. I loved hearing your first hand experiences with the 2000 series. It's a shame really that they are all gone. I agree with you, I really don't know the decision behind all stainless was. Maybe cost, maybe fashion at the time, it was the 1980s after all. I think a lot of rail fan are pleased with the decision to swing back to all red again. I do like what they have done moving the white belt and sine wave to the top. Thanks for sharing and watching. Cheers.
Excellent video as always, mate. Thanks so much. I didn't realise it has so many above ground sections. I'm gonna have to ride the whole thing next time I'm in town :)
Thanks for your support, Jonathan. I didn't realize either until I made this video. When you compare it to the first subway line, the Ginza Line which was almost entirely underground except for the last 400 meters at Shibuya the Marunouchi Line is quite unique in that way. I can wait to return and ride the new 2000 series.
I hear ya Max Cheng. It reminds me of a future megalopolis, trains whizzing everywhere. Plus there's the bridge that doesn't normally feature in photography. Very popular for rail otaku. Have you been there?
I fear that my first trip on an 02 series train during a high school trip will be my last since I won't be able to go back until at least 2022. Honestly love the late 80's design that still looks sleek and modern to this day (at least compared to what we have in America lol).
I hear you MaRvln!! The 02 series sure departed from tradition when the operator went with an all stainless body. If Tokyo Metro keep to their schedule with regard to replacing the 02 series by 2022 I think there will be a lot of people that will miss the change of one final ride. Anyway I'm looking forward to riding on the new 2000 series when I can next, that should be a real treat.
I grew up in Tokyo 1951-1964. On Sundays, I would ride the Marunoichi line to Tokyo Station and back to Ikebukuro just to pass the time for a 10 yen!!!
Wow thanks for sharing James Hatcher. You must of really seen a different Tokyo to what we see today. A brand new Marunouchi Line with 300 and 500 series trains. Also Tokyo Dome would have had no roof back then at Korakuen. Also Tokyo Station would have just been rebuilt after 1945 and there wouldn't have been the elevated metropolitan expressway.
Yes Anakin Hung. The new 2000 series is a stunning rail car, I really like to red and black seats and placing the white belt and sine wave at the top of the car is a nice touch, good planning.
Can't agree anymore, I also like they adopted the design of 500 series when it comes to its livery. This can make the commuters recall their childhood memories when they see the new train. Another reason I like marunouchi line is its line colour, red is my most favorite colour as well. But apart from marunouchi line, which metro line has wifi?
Really I didn't pick that up. That's a whole 22 years after they went into operation, now that I think of it the 02 series has been around for a long time 35 years.
The Marunouchi Line makes cameo appearances in a couple movies: 1967's James Bond thriller "You Only Live Twice", and 1963's "King Kong vs. Godzilla"! I wonder if there are others. ruclips.net/video/ljLQZXOUNjw/видео.html

Interesting that the top speed was 65km/hour. This = 40.38 miles per hour. I believe it was futurist and SF writer Arthur C. Clarke who once wrote that there was simply no need for a speed much greater than 40 miles per hour in an urban area. Great minds think alike.
