    This is why I hate the Toei Oedo line, I gotta climb the equivalent of the statue of liberty just to get off the train

    • @JapaneseHistory
      @JapaneseHistory  4 года назад

      Lol, sorry to hear that. I guess you must be fit with all that stair climbing. Funny you mention the statue of Liberty, I was so close to use it as a comparison picture for Roppoingi at number 1.

      I remembered climbing 55 floors down a building in downtown New York

    This is why it takes me half an hour to get out of Roppongi station 😂
    I can finish 2 beers by the time I make it to the top

      Mate, you deserve 2 beers for climbing your way out of there. There should be a HUB close by.

    I think you can make an episode on Otemachi Station.
    The complexity of 5 subway lines going through it. All built in different phases is mind boggling.

    • @JapaneseHistory
      @JapaneseHistory  4 года назад +1

      Yeah, Otemachi would be a good one. Almost half the Tokyo subway lines pass through there.

    4:09 Notice here on the bottom that there were plans to build a Shinkansen platform in Shinjuku! It was planned to be the terminus of the Joetsu Shinkansen (calling up to Niigata along the Sea of Japan)

    • @JapaneseHistory
      @JapaneseHistory  3 года назад

      Yes, it would have been a massive project to complete. If think it was supposed to come down past Ikebukuro too. Unfortunately it would never happen now due to ridership numbers on the Joetsu. Also the double deck E4 series is to be retired.

    If they were in London, they would all be the equivalent of a 15 story building underground. (See Geoff Marshall's channel if you didn't get the reference.)

    • @JapaneseHistory
      @JapaneseHistory  4 года назад +2

      Thanks, yes Geoff Marshall's channel has an extensive coverage and analysis on all aspects London Underground. I see the deepest station on the London Underground is Hampstead at 58.5 metres, a good 15 metres more than Tokyo's Roppongi .

    No wonder I despise the Toei Oedo line. But it has the cheapest 3-day pass for only 1500 Yen.

    • @JapaneseHistory
      @JapaneseHistory  3 года назад

      lol yes lalilulelo. Try to look at the positives like all that extra exercise you get. It covers a great distance compared to other underground lines so that 1500 Yen is a pretty good deal.

    Hey TOEI, Y’all were serious on how deep the Oedo Line should be, especially at Roppongi Station!

    • @JapaneseHistory
      @JapaneseHistory  4 года назад +1

      lol, The Toei Line had to go DEEP man. Have you been to Roppongi's Toei line?

      Oedo and Fukutoshin is the newer few lines to be builts, that's why they are deeper compared to the rest like Asakusa, Ginza, Mita or even Hibiya line.

    Another good video. Deepest in Japan is Doai station in beautiful Gunma prefecture, at around 70m. No elevator or escalator, just 486 steps of huffing and puffing. A taste of what's to come if you're climbing nearby Mt Tanigawa.
    Are there any plans to extend your videos to train lines outside of Tokyo? There's a lot of interesting rail history and statistics all over Japan.

    • @JapaneseHistory
      @JapaneseHistory  4 года назад +2

      Yes, Doai is the deepest active station in Japan. I think it has a daily ridership of about 30 people. I plan to visit it in the years ahead and Mt Tanigawa also. I climbed Mt Akagi in 2015.
      Fun fact, Yoshioka-Kaitei Station on the Seikan Tunnel is the deepest station in the world at 149.5 metres below sea level. It no longer takes passengers, just acts as an emergency escape.
      I have about 40 video ideas lined up now all in the Tokyo area, so that will keep me busy at the current rate of production for the next few years. I would like to extend outside of Tokyo area, but I don't think it will be anytime soon. I want to maximize channel growth doing subjects that people are most likely familiar with, at least till the subscriber numbers increase. I also like doing subjects that I know personally or have been to myself. It helps me visualise when I research a subject.

    • @Pericalypsis
      @Pericalypsis 4 года назад +1

      Wow just 30? I was there in Autumn 2014 for the climb up Mt Tanigawa, but for the life of me I can't recall how many people (if any) got off at the station. I only just made the return train after running all the way from the cable car station. My legs were jelly and my fellow train passengers were disgusted by the sight of a sweaty, hairy Westerner (well more so than usual). I also climbed Mt Akagi, in 2018.
      That's a lot of ideas for the future. Makes sense, then, to keep it Tokyo-specific. Keep focusing on good research and quality output. Looking forward to watching more of your videos!

    • @JapaneseHistory
      @JapaneseHistory  4 года назад +1

      Yes, Mt Akagi is a good climb.

    Even though it isnt a metro, the rinkai line is super deep to get under the bay - a lot cheaper than the Yurikamome line but no view and less convenient

    Video suggestion. Could you please do a video about japan in the 1980s and the bubble economy I love that era absolutely loving your videos so detailed just fantastic!

    • @JapaneseHistory
      @JapaneseHistory  3 года назад

      Thank you missshellybeach. The 80s were a time of high growth and cutting eadge technology for Japan. I will do an episode on the bubble economy it as a significant marker in Japanese history.
      If your into Japanese movies "A story of Yonosuke" gives a cool 1980s Japan perspective.
