  • 東京タワー | Tokyo Tower came to symbolize hope and the future in post war Japan, and is instantly recognizable on the Tokyo Skyline. Tokyo Tower has beamed television signals into the homes of the Kanto region since 1958, and sent a message to the rest of world, saying Japan was back, ushering in a new era of prosperity that would be later known as the Japanese economic miracle.
Join us for a Tokyo Tower history tour going all the way back to the beginning during construction in 1957 and the opening in December in 1958 to the present.

Have you ever been to the observation deck at the 249 metre mark in Tokyo Tower? Next time I go I plan to take the stairs.

My grandparents' house was at the sight of where Tokyo Tower stands today. The broadcasting company that built it payed them to move, and they moved just down the street. I can just barely remember looking up at the tower from their front door in the late 60's. We returned from the US for several months in the early 70's. In those days, there were practically no other tall buildings in Tokyo so Tokyo Tower just seemed to loom over the entire city. I need to point out one error--the sodium vapor lighting scheme that lights up the tower from the inside out was not adopted until the 80's or 90's, after the Eiffel Tower created a similar scheme. Prior to that the four corner edges were lined with light bulbs that lit up the outline of the tower. It was quite beautiful at night. Too bad you didn't include a clip of Mothra spinning her cocoon at the base of the tower LOL! That "tree" thingy they built may be a lot taller, but Tokyo Tower will always be the symbol of modern Tokyo as far as I'm concerned!

Thanks for sharing your amazing first hand experience, brmnyc. Tokyo definitely looked like a different place in the 1950s and 60s. Looking at the video and photos of the time it looked like the Tower was built in a normal residental neighbourhood as you have confirmed. It must of been an amazing site to see it rise into the sky. The tower really dominated the Tokyo skyline for decades as far as the eye could see.
It really was a symbol of hope of the time for all to see each day and I think it acted to motivate the people of Tokyo and is partly responsible for starting the economic miracle.
Lol, yes Mothra from 1961. It probably was the first movie depicting the destruction of Tokyo Tower. Tokyo Tower has been destroyed over a dozen times in movies. Godzilla is also famous for this.
I don't think skytree has been destroyed in any movies yet.

Yay I've never been this early for your videos! Your editing skills are evidently increasing :)
Tokyo Tower is visible from all around Tokyo―I could even see it from my former elementary school. It is indeed fascinating to learn about my own city's tower through a language other than Japanese lol
I've only been up the tower once, when I was a volunteer for the annual Suicide Prevention Stair Climb, so that means I've never been up the tower as a paying customer :P
Even with all the tall new buildings surrounding it, it truly is a Japanese icon; it catches my eyes wherever I am in Tokyo.
(P.S. the video at the end was sorta ominous haha)

Thanks for watching and your complement, Aaron Kiyama. Your right, even with all the buildings in the skyline today Tokyo Tower remains visible in all directions especially at night.
I spent new years eve at Zozoji temple in 2018 and Tokyo Tower was an amazing backdrop. I've never been to the top but hope to go next time.
The last one minute is ment to be humour. Different movies over the years seem to have a fascination with Tokyo Tower being destroyed by movie makers. One movie is Always Sunset on Third Street 2.
I think and hope Tokyo Tower never disappears.

I have been subscribed since your first video. I have enjoyed all of the videos because they are so informative. The old photos and films that you use must take a lot of time and effort to find, but I do appreciate the work you put into these videos. Tokyo Tower will always be iconic for Tokyo, more so that Skytree.

Thanks Taylor Mack for your support. It's been a pleasure creating these videos and having you with the channel since the start of the journey.
I describe looking for old photos and videos like panning for gold. Got to search out lots of websites with average photos before finding the "one". More recently I've been upscaling small photos photos that were previously too small to use which has widened the photos that can be used.
Tokyo Tower represented a new beginning and hope for a city and nation and for that reason it is different than Skytree.

this is crazy to see that the area around the Tokyo Tower used to be suburbs, wildlife, and parkland.

@@JapaneseHistory well if nothing else they do try to balance the old world with the new. Edo period castles next to high rise skyscrapers. i've been to tokyo, it's a beautiful and amazing place. but seeing the old way it used to be, i would want it to be like that again.
