I now have 3 versions of this song, and they're all so different but still great. I think they each capture the mood a little differently. You rock Brendan!
Hadn't heard this in a long long time I played Lapalco to death when it first came out, it just popped into my head again when I got out of bed this morning. Reminds me of where I was at the time Christmas 2002 I'd broken up with the girl I'd been with since I was 15, the line that goes "bottle of wine and some cigarettes, watch TV and go to bed" was mirroring my life at that point. Happy Sad vibes.
Not just an underated musician and singer but writer also. I respect Jack White alot but Brendan deserves just as much accolade for the Raconteurs songs!!
Amazing! Pure authentic and true. This song has such an vintage/Beatles/Simon and Garfunkel /modern vibe at the same time but also is very original. Love it !! Great job Brendan ;)
I have loved this song and Brendan since I was 15 back in 2002/2003 when this was released. I don't have any idea why people didn't catch onto his stuff till The Raconteurs. Seriously folx.
I just typed in the lyrics from a song I heard on a movie I dont even like (the one with the dentist who talks to ghosts) and found his song "What I'm looking for" and then found this song. I LOVE HIM ALREADY!
i still don't get how he isn't more popular...I mean his songs are catchy his lyrics are good and the songs are kinda cheery...and as for this song it has to be amongst my favourite of the album!!=D
Aw man, why isn't Brendan massive, it just doesn't make sense. Arguably one of the most ignored talents of all time. Hoping to see the dude back in Glasgow again some time soon.
I've never heard this version of the song. It is pretty fantastic. I must purchase this immediately! Also, who is the goddess with Brendan?! She is gorgeous!
I agree with you on that being the best version. Shortly after I posted the comment, I found it and purchased the Wellfed EP on itunes. I am very pleased :)
This is a little faster than the album version...but still great because this song is all about the lyrics, which blow me away every time I listen to this song!
@INDEEDIBLY : wrong! This song is a reference to the town Metairie, Louisiana. The songwriter is from a nearby town. I think I know how to spell the town I grew up in. Benson spelled it wrong on his album. My "C'mon, man!" stands.
I can't believe the single misses the best refrain from the album version: 'You've got it bad, you've got it bad...". it feels totally bereft without it.
Thats kind of the point of the Raconteurs. To mesh the styles of the soft pop of Benson and loud Rock of White. White Stripes, Benson, Raconteurs, Greenhornes are all awesome.
@Yummycherrypie89 And a year later, I have discovered him as well... Yay for the discovery of new GREAT music. It's one of the best feelings in the world
Who is this. What is this and where is he from? I saw Lapalco witches across the River Metro New Orleans area "Metarie" is actually METAIRIE Looking for the tiny spark song
WOW!!!!!!????????? i've never heard this version......I love the original off Lapalco co-produced by Jason Falkner it has these awesome weird psychedelic freaked out 'mama's and papa's' BVS and I dunno this is just different...not wanting to put it down but the original totally does it for me...btw....this guy is an amazing artist/ songwriter even if he isn't John Lennon!!!!
I love BB, but the album version of this is much much better - not sure this was ever necessary. Anyway, he is still lovely and his new album is wonderful
Anyone know if this version is available as an mp3? Even the original version of Metarie is unavailable on Benson's own site as well as iTunes. I'd take either one. I used to have the mp3 but it has evaporated...
sorta. lyrically and musically, john tends to be a lot more abstract and obscure (aside from his plain and simple chord progressions on guitar). as far as tempo, sound and structure go though; yea, theyre pretty similar.
I found out who he is from the Raconeurs. Liked his songs on the second album better than Jacks (seeing as though they shared writing duties on the first). Also album version is better
While I really like this song, I think I've identified why I've always been a little uneasy about it. It doesn't actually have a chorus. "There's something I've been meaning to say to you" is really just a transition. This new version seems a bit disorganized, maybe try to try to make up for that. I'm not sure. Still, I like it.
try out jacob golden or hawksley workman... i find them quite near to Brendan, thou i still prefer him... Metarie is my fav song but i don't really like this version, the album one is much more touching!
I now have 3 versions of this song, and they're all so different but still great. I think they each capture the mood a little differently. You rock Brendan!
Find the 4th and complete the set :)

Saw you play live many times in England, memorable times and tunes.❤❤
Imagine if he walked into the photo booth and stumbled upon Jack Black and Kyle Gass recording "Tribute"......
LOL Thought the same thing. Started watching and I was like, wait, what's going on here.
RedYellow Blue
Instead he stumbled upon Jack White
@@greenshoot7871 no. He stumbles upon the Jack White/Jack Black collaboration known as Zebra.
@@kenfleischman 😑

It's literally on my list of my favorite songs of all time, all the versions!
Amazing! Pure authentic and true. This song has such an vintage/Beatles/Simon and Garfunkel /modern vibe at the same time but also is very original. Love it !! Great job Brendan ;)

weareclouds thank you I appreciate it
Best version. I love the Stones-y country fill at the beginning and the lack of girlfriend backing vocals.
Never heard this version until now. I love both, for different reasons!
Brendan is such a great artist.
Haunts my mind lately
Wow, I haven't heard this version for many years...fond memories of watching MTV2 in my college room :)
wow i fall for him more everytime i hear him sing... amazing!
@blastedgoat. Still feel this way? hahah.
I just typed in the lyrics from a song I heard on a movie I dont even like (the one with the dentist who talks to ghosts) and found his song "What I'm looking for" and then found this song. I LOVE HIM ALREADY!

Thank you, Mr Benson.
I agree, I much prefer the album version. However, this version is still great!
Can't wait to see him in September :)
agreed. theres a few versions of the song. theres another version which starts a little more soft, and that ones my favorite.
I love how it goes back into the "And I was bad, and I was weak..." The Wellfed version is just like this but without that :(
@ > *Brendan Benson*
🎶> *Metarie*
💿 > *Lapalco*
p > 2003
🎬︎ > *Nicolas Hill*
Love it.
Aw man, why isn't Brendan massive, it just doesn't make sense. Arguably one of the most ignored talents of all time. Hoping to see the dude back in Glasgow again some time soon.
this is beautiful
Beautiful, blue eyes
I've never heard this version of the song. It is pretty fantastic. I must purchase this immediately!

the lyrics to the album version of this song are my first year of uni summed up perfectly. its quite spooky
This is a little faster than the album version...but still great because this song is all about the lyrics, which blow me away every time I listen to this song!
He did a video version, because he is Jesus in michigan guitarist form.
@INDEEDIBLY : wrong! This song is a reference to the town Metairie, Louisiana. The songwriter is from a nearby town. I think I know how to spell the town I grew up in. Benson spelled it wrong on his album. My "C'mon, man!" stands.
Amen, brother/sister
I love him so much,nothing against The Raconteurs,but i think he's so much better alone,he's awesome. :)
I can't believe the single misses the best refrain from the album version: 'You've got it bad, you've got it bad...". it feels totally bereft without it.
oh wow...your soooo right...
jet lag is awesome to yes, one of the best actually
woah havn't heard this version of this yet.
La Palco - has this track. Also 'Tiny Spark' and 'Folk Singer' are otehr great tracks of this album.
This fella has the same birthday as me! he's pretty good for 37
beautiful uwu
I was thinking of searching Vincent gallo and here this guys in a photo booth like gallo 'spanning time
Thats kind of the point of the Raconteurs. To mesh the styles of the soft pop of Benson and loud Rock of White.
White Stripes, Benson, Raconteurs, Greenhornes are all awesome.
Brendan Benson in Tribute
@Yummycherrypie89 And a year later, I have discovered him as well... Yay for the discovery of new GREAT music. It's one of the best feelings in the world
I wish that there were more songs about being rejected.
Metarie is a place.
@Jul2233 Usually popularity ruins artists, so I'm glad he is under the radar. Love his stuff!
Anyone know where there's a HD version of this video? Love this version! :)
Oh you are so lucky ^_^ I wish i knew him.
Anyone else getting an Oasis vibe??
This guy has a bit more going on than the eternally mediocre, if not downright dull Oasis.
I wouldn't mind being the girl in the video.
Someones know where I Can find this version ? Its not the same as the album
and jet lag!
:D noice
I love this song
this is a bit of a weird question and probably has an obvious answer but what is Metarie? is it a name or something?
City in LA
Benson rocks!!! Cant believe he isn't more popular!!! Hes much better than all the modern rapists...
totally remind me of tenacious d tribute music video at the begining
the chorus part reminds of a led zeppelin song but not quite sure which one is it yet.
You know what in this video he reminds me of Jude Law in the movie Cold Mountain.
Who is this. What is this and where is he from?
I saw Lapalco witches across the River Metro New Orleans area
"Metarie" is actually METAIRIE
Looking for the tiny spark song
He looks freakishly A LOT like my teacher, Mr John ..... and he's British!
Common Unity
GTK
I know I can't find it on youtube though
Hmm. Really different from the (two) album versions. Wasn't expecting that - very good though.
Is the title of the song referencing that he “met a rie?” Like a Mary or a sally or an Ashley or am I overthinking it
WOW!!!!!!????????? i've never heard this version......I love the original off Lapalco co-produced by Jason Falkner it has these awesome weird psychedelic freaked out 'mama's and papa's' BVS and I dunno this is just different...not wanting to put it down but the original totally does it for me...btw....this guy is an amazing artist/ songwriter even if he isn't John Lennon!!!!

He just released a song called Richest Man. Give it a try man!
@ajjaxd Yes...I have gotten many comments about that...didnt know ow to spell at the time
can you post all the versions on here?
I cant download this song from limewire or Ares D:
Anyone know if this version is available as an mp3? Even the original version of Metarie is unavailable on Benson's own site as well as iTunes. I'd take either one. I used to have the mp3 but it has evaporated...
Anybody got a source for old live videos of Brendan Benson?
+Reid Elliot yes jewtube and pirate bay
There are like, a gajillion different versions of this song.
LOLOLOLOL!
you hold a good argument :)
great great song! I prefer the other version though, much more raw and stripped down.
This version is inferior to my Spotify wtf
@zombiezane Haha, well, I think it was actually intentional.

@SharpPolicy sarcasm?? XD I didnt know how to spell back then... 13 months ago...
@iunnodiapeys xD dont ask...bad spelling

@TheCubetap It's spelled correctly. You misspelled it.
I liked this song better before I saw the video
Does this guy remind anyone else of a male Liz Phair?
Wo.... what the hell is this version.... god though.... whys mine diff O_o
this isn't bad, but I like the album version SO much more...
I love the sonf but do despise this version. Boo to you benson! Liked the video though
BENSON IS MY FATHER
i love this song, but i just can't watch the video, the part filmed in front of the green screen is just painful to watch.
even my white male doctor was uncomfortable around me
Probably the only thing about you that actually makes other people uncomfortable is your massive cognitive dissonance and interminable victim complex.
try out jacob golden or hawksley workman... i find them quite near to Brendan, thou i still prefer him... Metarie is my fav song but i don't really like this version, the album one is much more touching!
The album version (on Lapalco) is better than this version.
But it's still pretty good. :)
At his best here. Songs have declined in recent years
