hey I directed the video, they were on tour and had not time to let me film so I had to get stuff while they were eating, traveling or just resting. I worked with 1 camera man and myself for 5 days, filming whatever we could. Band were cool but Brenden felt out of his " comfort zone" and was not helpful. Paying for their food helped get stuff done, rest was edit and rescued in post. Reality sucks or what !
This song has never lost its quality with me. Has such a laid back, chilled out happy feel to it. Even if the lyrics aren't exactly that, I still love chilling out the back with a smoke to this... Shame it does nothing but fucking rain in Ireland!!
Just an amazing tune. I'm proud to say I discovered this even before Polly or whatever. I've been saying for years that McCartney would kill to come with a tune like this, nowadays. Must add that I dig this video. It evokes the feel of the indie 90's (Pavement, Archers, etc) in a charming way. Fantastic stuff!
I agree with you. Brendan Benson is without equal. He is the new Paul McCartney. I listen to Lapalco every day. It is my favourite album. Favourite songs are Folk Singer and Pleasure Seeker
Brendan is so underatted its ridiculous..hes such a wonderful talent and his voice is very distinct. I LOVE BB! I just wish people would recognize and adore his talent more
heard this song in along came polly. got into the raconteurs, and I discovered b.b. did this song thanks to you tube. very cool way to get into new music.
love the dude with the floppy brown hair in the green shirt. had to watch the end of this video a lot for a project, and him pecking Benson on the cheek has probably added like 5 years to my life
Amen- I was horribly depressed about the state of rock and roll, until I discovered the White Stripes, and the natural progression to The Racs, BB, the Black Keys, The Greenhornes, Holly Golightly, and the Black Squares. True, organic rock still lives.....
why is this the first time I'm herin this-this should be all over the charts-it rox!!! our system sux and plays music that sux,, I met one of billy idols girlfriends-she told me,, the reason the rock stations don't play his music is he refuses to pay to have his stuff played-fuck the system, the best is always hidden-you guys rock forever
yeah i tried to get tickets to the show on monday in the olympia but i couldnt. So on tuesday i met him outside the Clarence hotel..seriously amazing. Yeah i also prefer his solo stuff by far. I have heard of the band and heard one or two songs by them. Havent bought it yet though...probably will as soon as i can. How was the show on Monday anyways? wouldve loved to go but meeting him definitely took the dissapointment away lol.
yep i was watching the white stripes or jack doing the viva video thingy on youtube and he recomened this song but i think they deleted that video now but id check it out type in "the white stripes viva"
Delighted to hear that. I saw Raconteurs in Dublin on Monday night. I would prefer Brendan's solo stuff. By the way Jen , have you heard of the band Mood Elevator. It's Brendan's backup band The Wellfed Boys under another name. I got the album "Married Alive" today. The mark of the Benson genius is all over the album. He co-wrote 5 of the 12 tracks...
for those that dig on The Raconteurs check out Cory Chisel's website to see the making of trailer and download the new single, Born Again. Tis pretty dope
Yeah yeah yeah yeah I've always been this way Never known any other way to feel Got the right of way And all of the others must yield Now I'm naked And I'm in school I can't make it To the door Yeah Try to understand That an oyster can only make a pearl From a grain of sand But from what I don't know makes a girl Well I'm trying Not to laugh It's that I'm dying When we break (when we break) apart And you take (And you take) back your heart (back your heart) And it aches in the dark But it makes a tiny spark I've always been this way Never known any other way to feel Got the right of way And all the others must yield Now I'm naked And I'm in school L can't make it To the door And we're lying in the grass I was trying oh not to laugh I was drowning in the past
In my opinion, one of the best songs ever written, the line about the pearl... just one of the greatest lyrics ever.
THANK YOU
This song will always and forever be Along Came Polly and 10th grade high-school to me...
Same.

This song is being 20 and driving around with friends, scoping out ladies, playing catch, and drinking beers feels all day.
This song has never lost its quality with me. Has such a laid back, chilled out happy feel to it. Even if the lyrics aren't exactly that, I still love chilling out the back with a smoke to this... Shame it does nothing but fucking rain in Ireland!!
the lyrics are the best!

I always listen to this song when I'm feeling down. It always cheers me up. Thanks guys!
Just an amazing tune. I'm proud to say I discovered this even before Polly or whatever. I've been saying for years that McCartney would kill to come with a tune like this, nowadays. Brendan is so underatted its ridiculous..hes such a wonderful talent and his voice is very distinct. I LOVE BB! I just wish people would recognize and adore his talent more

This song (and pretty much all the songs on Lapalco) is pure awesomeness.
The twin geniuses of Brendan Benson and Jason Falkner
World's greatest Dad brought me here.
Me too, then I found out I have the same last name as him.. Trippy xD
Amazing, it's the "World greatest dad" that brought me here too!!!
Quentin Just got done watching World's Greatest Dad on Netflix and immediately came here. Great song!
David Rybaczewski Jason Falkner from "Jellyfish" co-wrote this song. They are another great band that hardly nobody knows of.

I immediately knew my guy's a keeper once he dedicated this song to me. :)

Yeah yeah yeah yeah
I've always been this way
Never known any other way to feel
Got the right of way
And all of the others must yield
Now I'm naked
And I'm in school
I can't make it
To the door
Yeah
Try to understand
That an oyster can only make a pearl
From a grain of sand
But from what I don't know makes a girl
Well I'm trying
Not to laugh
It's that I'm dying
When we break (when we break) apart
And you take (And you take) back your heart (back your heart)
And it aches in the dark
But it makes a tiny spark
I've always been this way
Never known any other way to feel
Got the right of way
And all the others must yield
Now I'm naked
And I'm in school
L can't make it
To the door
And we're lying in the grass
I was trying oh not to laugh
I was drowning in the past
The mans a genius.
