"i think younger people have no idea how controversial, risqué and boundary pushing this woman was in her heyday" Right? Listening to her controversial songs now, they sound so conservative. Note that in this song, abortion is completely off the table as something the character would consider doing, and the proposed solution for this pregnancy situation is a shotgun wedding. Similarly, in "Like a Virgin," the best sex is the first time; it isn't obvious in the lyrics, but the video it seems that it is not just the first time, but that it happens on the wedding night. We have "Like a Prayer," which at the time was considered blasphemous, in which the metaphor used for love is religious ecstasy; one wonders why Madonna used St. Martin de Porres in the video (not "black Jesus" - note the Dominican habit) rather than St. Theresa of Avila (well, not really; its clear that the former was used to have an anti-racism message).

This was a very young Madonna at the beginning her career. Songs like this , I believe, are why some parents didn’t like Madonna. I was a teen when this one was released and I loved it.
I love Madonna especially in the 1980's she was named the Marilyn Monroe of the 80's! I went out and bought her greatest hits in the 90's when CDs came out, I still have the CD today!!
Unless, of course, we're talking about US grownup society's eyes. In society's eyes, _anything_ she did was wrong. :) But yeah, being a teenager in the 80s, Madonna definitely did everything right.
her decision already made- she`s keeping her baby- her "friends have no right to tell her not to keep it-life is always better than death-a baby is special and never come at the "right" time- gotta accept what God gives you
Here in the UK in mid 1980's when this was released it was being talked about all over the media. Some people think this is just a song about choosing “life”. I’ve always thought of it perfectly capturing the teenage idealized vision of the world. When you’re young, you think “we could make it together. We’ll just work, raise our baby, and make family together.” The real lesson is that life is so much harder than that. That’s what the dad knows but she doesn’t. She hasn’t learned the harsh realities of raising children, especially when starting so young. This song sounds so simple but turns out it’s very complex. Gotta love 80s Madonna!
This was on the radio all the time and we sang along pretty much just enjoying the music and the beat, and the fact the lyrics were a little risqué! As a teen it was like- I sure don’t want to have that conversation with my dad! The song prob brought awareness to -“you better be careful!”
Madonna came from a large Catholic family (6 children) and was very close to her dad. She was only 5 years old when her mother died. My mother worked for years with her father Tony at General Dynamics and my parents played Bridge with her dad and step mother on weekends. Tony was very proud of her but would get a bit embarrassed when male coworkers would come up to him with risqué pictures of Madonna and ask that he have them autographed by her. You have to understand it was a very different culture back then and Madonna was considered a bit controversial at times. Especially coming from a devote Catholic family. This song clearly expresses both how close she and her dad are as well as them dealing with things that weren’t always indicative of her religious upbringing.
I applaud the message of this song! It's terrifying and hard but to chose "LIFE" takes courage and strength! Good to see the father ,although blindsided with the news and upset, he can't turn away his daughter in her time of need. Love wins in the end!
I’ve always felt this is more of a call from a daughter… an almost primal need from her, needing her daddy to just love her and help her, not to judge and yell and preach. I don’t know that we ever grow out of that, either. The need for acceptance and love from others ❤️

I had forgotten or never noticed that the bass slaps so hard in this song. The whole way through. Still not a big fan of her music but, can't argue about her talent and success. Her acting wasn't half bad in the few movies she did either.
The brilliant thing about "Papa Don't Preach" is that the lyrics can have multiple interpretations. At its base, the song is about a young woman dating a man her father doesn't approve of. It's also possible that the woman has an unplanned pregnancy with the man she's dating, and there's pressure for her to "give up" the baby via adoption, or even abortion, but she's making the hard decision to keep the baby instead. "Papa Don't Preach" was the second single from Madonna's 1986 album True Blue, which was her third studio album, and featured more sophisticated songwriting and deeper lyrics than her first two albums. The album gave her the artistic legitimacy to become a multidecadal pop star, and produced five singles, all of which became Top 5 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: "Live To Tell," "Papa Don't Preach," "True Blue," "Open Your Heart," and "La Isla Bonita." TRIVIA: Madonna was born on August 16, 1958. Exactly 28 years later, "Papa Don't Preach" became the #1 song in the U.S., on August 16, 1986. Happy birthday indeed! It spent two weeks at #1, replacing "Glory Of Love" by Peter Cetera (August 2, 1986; 2 weeks at #1), and being replaced by "Higher Love" by Steve Winwood (August 30, 1986; 1 week at #1).
@@wolfcorpse I said nothing about who specifically wrote the songs, just that True Blue featured more sophisticated songwriting than her first two albums. And regardless of who wrote the songs, her vocal performance began to mature as well.

That was Madonna. Riskey, edges. While doing a world tour in the 80s. She did a routine on a bed.In Canada, she was told if you do that routine you will be arrested. She did it anyway. Didn't get arrested but I think came close. She did things her way. No matter what other people thought of her.
This song came at a time where single parenthood was just starting to being a path for young women and more accepted, but still raised some eyebrows. The song reflected the times.
the video and song were very controversial, but she was praised for bringing this issue to the forfront and making people start talking and doing something about teen pregnancy. Also correction for RobinT Madonnas mother died of cancer when she was only 5 years old

The album gave her the artistic legitimacy to become a multidecadal pop star, and produced five singles, all of which became Top 5 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: "Live To Tell," "Papa Don't Preach," "True Blue," "Open Your Heart," and "La Isla Bonita."
TRIVIA: Madonna was born on August 16, 1958.
She didn't write this song, it belonged to my aunt, Christina Vierra, first
@@wolfcorpse I said nothing about who specifically wrote the songs, just that True Blue featured more sophisticated songwriting than her first two albums. And regardless of who wrote the songs, her vocal performance began to mature as well.
@@dr4782 either way it was my aunt's song and this disgusting witch stole it
Love this song...drawn in by her voice and different tones...
You need to check her song Oh Father. It's one of her best.
I love your reaction from the perspective of parents 👏👏 Madonna always makes you think 🤔
I have a firm belief that all women my age, went through a Madonna phase.
The Immaculate Collection was played to death in my CD player for like two years
That one and also Bedtime Stories. Those were my jams.
Glad you both are doing more Madonna. Try "Open Your Heart" next or "Get Into The Groove'
This was a biiig deal when released.
That was Madonna. Riskey, edges. While doing a world tour in the 80s. She did a routine on a bed.In Canada, she was told if you do that routine you will be arrested. She did it anyway. Didn't get arrested but I think came close. She did things her way. No matter what other people thought of her.
True Blue is one of the best albums of the '80s.
J-Pop, K-Pop, Synth-Pop, Euro-Pop... & Madonna pioneered Ho-Pop. 😃
🤣🤣 at ya first part reaction. She's like it's great, and he's "it's scary". 😂
Super excited to see your reactions, you are going to LOVE this 💗 💫
A masterpiece ❤
Madonna at her best!
The task is to enable and support.
This song came at a time where single parenthood was just starting to being a path for young women and more accepted, but still raised some eyebrows. The song reflected the times.
the video and song were very controversial, but she was praised for bringing this issue to the forfront and making people start talking and doing something about teen pregnancy. Also correction for RobinT Madonnas mother died of cancer when she was only 5 years old
You two are adorbs.
What a classic. One of the best songs of all time
This why the 80s music was amazing if it was released today it still would be a hit and piss off so many people
"Awww… he's about to take her out for ice cream" What an excellent reaction! I love it!
She should have won the Grammy for this song but the award was given to Barbara Streisand who's music wasn't even on the radio as much as Madonna's song if at all.
Great reaction👍
This is peak Madonna.
This might be one of Madonna's greatest artistic contributions. It's not my favorite Madonna song but it's emotional messaging is powerful.
80s Madonna was so iconic
