    It was definitely about teenage pregnancy and caused a shitstorm of controversy. Pro-lifers liked the “keeping her baby” part but criticized her supposedly promoting pre-marital sex. Iconic Madonna video.

      Exactly... and in the cut aways with Madonna dancing, she's holding her stomach/abdomen "protectively". It's ironic that she almost didn't record this song until she got the message. And as an FYI, in the first dance sequence, when she arches her back, her boob pops out.. lol

    • @NandoDisco

      I love Madonnas use of irony. I'm gonna keep my baby but I'm also keeping my man and have premarital sex. And being as she grew up catholic and used catholic imagery with her actual name being Madonna it was a perfect recipe for exposure and controversy.

      @@NandoDisco Exactly. Madonna didn't write this song (nor "Like a Virgin") but no one BUT Madonna could sing either of those songs.. lol. She really leveled things up when she did "Like a Prayer" and well went overboard with "Justify My Love" and "Erotica"...

    • @casmatori
      @casmatori 4 месяца назад

      Nothing about "pro-life". Back in those days children from underage mothers would be given up for adoption. Hence the "keeping my baby" line. Catholics (like Madonna's family) especially would not tolerate abortion.

    Madonna’s songs always have several meanings and very rarely lack deeper meaning. It’s both teenage pregnancy and being seriously in love at a young age. It was a huge controversy back then. She wanted it to be like a movie. I hope you’ve done Live to tell and Open your heart, too. And La isla bonita ❤Same album.

    She'd had one single "Live To Tell" off of the "True Blue" album and had debuted a longer, all blonde hairstyle, (a la "Shanghai Surprise) but this was the video where the short, platinum blonde hair was first revealed and it stayed pretty much throughout '86 and '87, through Whos' That Girl? and up to "La Isla Bonita", where she cut it short and went dark, which lasted all of '88 and until April '89 when she went back to blonde for shooting "Dick Tracy". The day after this video came out, that's all everyone could talk about, Madonna's "new" hair, and within weeks, all the girls had that look ("Rachel", who?). People forget just how huge and influential Madonna was in the 80s. Also, note Erika Belle and longtime friend Debi Mazer in the video as well as Danny Aiello playing Madonna's father.

    Madonna kicked off the 90s with this hit and was termed the "Queen of Pop" one of her biggest monster hits, probably her best critically too, the music video made her Iconic and immortalized her in history. The first artist to feature gay people in her work and boldy too. Loving your reactions.

    Yes, she is talking about pregnancy and having a baby at a very young age. The message in this song angried a lot of catholics and other religious groups, that was at least the case in the States. Elsewhere I think not so much. That story line is also included in her choreography - if you look how she dances during the chorus, she is covering her belly with her hands, sort of protective gesture.

    My take is she's fed up cause she raising three 'babies', the single father(where mom at?), the new boyfriend and the baby. Definitely the baby because you can tell when she's leaning against the concrete column she knew her life would be different after seeing that pregnancy test! Madonna at her best when she's controversial and on message! She got more lol.! Oh Father please! Amazing reaction guys.

    It's pro-choice. Personal decision. Raising/having a baby without being married caused such controversy for conservatives/ pro-life. In this era, conservatism was already authoritarian/was on the rise, and still is. Evangelical Christians gave her hell. Censor her, cancel her. Latinas for women's rights.

    • @jamesr2164

      If you actually take a look at the lyrics it's obvious she's talking about teenage pregnancy.
      "The one you warned me all about. The one you said I could do without. We're in an awful mess."
      So obviously the song is not about whether or not to give the boyfriend up. They were both in an "awful mess." What mess do you think they possibly both could be in, when she's saying she is going to keep her baby?
      "He says that he's going to marry me. We can raise a little family. Maybe we'll be all right, it's a sacrifice. But my friends keep telling me to give IT up....."
      If it was about whether or not to give up the boyfriend, the lyric wouldn't be "it", it would clearly say but my friends keep telling me to give HIM up. The song is most definitely about teenage pregnancy if you really take a look at the lyrics. She wasn't singing about whether or not she should give up her boyfriend, it's whether or not she should have an abortion or keep the baby.

    • @kristianberg4264
      @kristianberg4264 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@pierpaolonathancorrieri2290 I’ve been listening to the lyrics since 1986. Like I said, pregnancy is implied, but along with a teaspoon of vagueness. Think of all the words that do NOT appear in the lyrics: pregnant, abortion, father (to reference her bf), mother, birth, carry to term, “having this baby”, (pregnancy) test, unprotected, etc. Yes, I’m sure it’s about an unplanned pregnancy. I just think the shoe would also fit if the song was construed to be about a serious relationship that her friends and father disapproved of.
