It’s not about a stalker or being smothering, it’s actually the opposite of that, it’s about a guy who took his girlfriend for granted “didn’t mean to miss your birthday baby, wish I’d seen you blow those candles out” she left him and he’s trying to prove he won’t take her for granted again hence “I’ll be there for you”.

Such a great song by a great band. The key change near the end is one of the best in music.
A little something for Brad that can cover a good portion of 80s ballads: these songs were written from the trials and tribulations of being a touring musician that is on the road for 90+% of the year with a significant other/loved ones at home “I didn’t mean to miss your birthday baby…”

Well, you know people always say the 3 words that are supposed to tell you everything you need to hear to convey their feelings..."I love you" but really "These 5 words I swear to you. I'll be there for you." is much more significant than "I love you" which everyone says but often do not mean and instead of empty words or empty promises you are promising to physically and emotionally be there for someone when possible but emotionally be there for them when you physically can't be present. That's saying something with much more meaning than just "I love you"....in my opinion 💙

Man, back in the day. You were alone with your lady. Put on some Bon Jovi...Guaranteed make-out session! Man just has a way with words, and it's all wrapped up in some pretty good rock & roll music! The 80's...WHAT at time to be alive! Miss it. \m/

Ashton Kutcher does a sweet rendition of this song in an old movie called A Lot Like Love.

lol if this song was released now it would be sung by someone like Justin "one-boy boy-band" Beiber. Complete with the 452 unnecessary notes.

Brad nailed it that there really isn't much to this song when you break it down . But Lex picked up on the songs pristine production & performance aspects that gets the emotions going . The bands official video of the song really brings that point home .
