This was Madonna's tribute to Marilyn Monroe singing "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend". Madonna got the look down perfect. My favorite Madonna songs are ballads ("Live to Tell" and "Gone") where she shows off her voice. The woman can sing for real!
Madonna was the girl crush for most of the pop culture oriented female teenagers at the time. After seeing Lucky Star and Borderline, I tried to emulate her style and look from head to toe (much to my Daddy's dismay). The rosaries as jewelry, the cross earrings, the teased blonde hair, heavy makeup and bracelets up to the elbows on both arms. Lace leggings and lace fingerless gloves. There were many times where he sent me back upstairs to change clothes or "find the rest of my skirt" 😳🤨😆
"Papa Don't Preach" is a great Madonna song you might want to do a reaction video to. Madonna was great when she was young, when she got older, not so much because she got weird.
That song holds the record for being stuck in my head the longest. 30 freaking days. Despite that I still love it and the video. I don’t think she ever looked better.
Yeah, the first album.. She burst on the scene and programmers didn't know what to do with her. KROQ (Rock and New Wave) played her, the R&B stations played her and the pop stations played her music. With that first album it seemed like she came from nowhere.
madonna was in her early 20s in the early mid 80s... to see how sweet / clean / innocent looking she was until 1988... she really was a great performer and did well ...
All hail the 👑 Queen of Pop!! Brad & Lex PLEASE go down this rabbit hole. You can't grasp Madonna from one song - or even five. She's a chameleon who pushes every boundary, every decade.
That's just bubblegum Madonna. She released a few really great songs during the 80's and the 90's though. You should definitely listen/react to "Like A Prayer" (in my opinion one of the best pop songs ever written), "Vogue" and "Frozen" ( two of the greatest music videos ever made) if you don't know those yet.
Anyone who say’s Madonna released only a few good songs during the 80’s & 90’s, is someone who can’t be taken seriously. The woman carried the 80’s & 90’s and has the hits to prove it.
I was in JR high when Madonna made these songs. She was definitely extremely popular. She pushed boundaries of the time, which made her very popular but she kept pushing the boundaries and (in my opinion) she always chased the fame it originally brought her. I think one of her best songs was Papa Don’t Preach. Powerful song for the time when teen pregnancy was a big topic. Yes, this is how we got WAP. People want the fame she had so they chased pushing the boundaries. But they didn’t have originality so they went for shock. When people before you have already done this the only thing you can do is be extreme shock. Todays artists have to go for extreme but it often lacks the substance of what made the original artists so successful. There is a point where it’s no longer “empowering” it’s just pornography in a pretty package. Madonna fell victim to this too. She just pushed and pushed until a lot of her audience grew tired…. Which takes a bit away from her legacy of where she came from.
"But they didn’t have originality so they went for shock...it’s just pornography in a pretty package.." That says it all. Comparing Cardi B, or others, to Madonna is just that.
Madonna was Cardi B, Lady Ga Ga and Taylor Swift, all wrapped in one. This was her third number 1 (oops, only went 2) single, in a long list of hits. She had 63 top-ten hits.
She pushed all the boundaries! -80’s-like a prayer, borderline, into the groove, like a virgin, lucky star, papa don’t preach -90’s -vogue, justify my love, secret, bad girl, express yourself -2000’s-what it feels like for a girl, music, hung up, sorry, don’t tell me. Some of Madonna’s videos were banned on TV!
Brad and Lex, you should definitely react to her song Dress You Up, the concert footage video. In my opinion, this is her best song! The concert is straight up 80s and it is intensely catchy!
Madonna was the Lady Gaga of her day - and it's clear Madonna was one of Gaga's biggest inspirations in terms of style and music. Papa don't preach is a banger.
You guys should do another early song by her called "Borderline". It's actually a pretty good song.... And this is coming from a straight up rock n roll fan.
You need to check how she came out. The first time Madonna aired on U.S. televsion was in 1982 on a show called Dancing On Air performing her then club hit Everybody. But rather skip to January 1984, Madonna performs her hit Holiday on American Band Stand with a short insightful LEGENDARY interview. HONESTLY YOU NEED TO WATCH THIS ONE.

Madonna is the most successful female recording artist of all time with 335 million records sold and is the most successful solo touring artist of all time. Last year was ranked no.2 only behind the Beatles as the most successful artist on the billboard hot 100 chart. You cannot compare cardi b and Madonna. Madonna is an icon and legend. Madonna also had longevity. Madonna scored Atleast 1 top 10 from her first 12 studio albums starting from Madonna in 1983 to MDNA in 2012!! Cardi b will not be heard if in another 5 years
If you look up Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend. By Marilyn Monroe You'll see where the inspiration for this video. Later in life Madonna said she would probably never do this song "live" ever again because the "Material Girl" moniker became her nickname for years and for this she was not happy that people weren't separating the real her from her singer/performer moniker. She didn't like that people thought that she was really materialistic.
Although Madonna is right smack in my era, I was never a fan. She sings through her nose instead of from her chest and throat as the best singers tend to do. However, I do NOT begrudge her any of her success! We're both a couple of poor girls from the Midwest and I'm glad she defied the odds and made it BIG! Kudos to Madonna. Nice video post from you, Brad & Lex!
@@MandyZor-El I don't know, my little sister and her buddies were into her singing and her lyrics pretty hard back in the 80's. You see, we sort of judged singers by their singing capabilities or lack thereof. lol! See how that works?😉
We always loved Madonna.....I remember when it was all her..MJ and Prince they dominated a few years together as 3....like a virgin next. Gwen Stefani reminded us of a fresh young Madonna when she hit in 95
She didn't reach Cardi B WAP level until the '90s, lol. Well, she was a a huge pop, electronica music star during the '80s and '90s. Lots of good songs and videos from her. She did push the boundaries a lot back then, true. The daughter yall are talking about does look a lot like Madonna. After her divorce from Sean Penn (Actor). Remember Dennis Rodman (basketball player), they were both very controversial celebrities back then and had dated for awhile (1990s) . Perfect couple, huh? lol Anyhow, they tried to get pregnant, but they partied too much (drugs) and couldn't get pregnant. Gwen Stefani/No Doubt from a different genre (ska-punk, new wave) is similar to Madonna. Singing style, charisma, gorgeous, Italian ancestry, etc. Just less controversial than Madonna though.
Madonna truly was ground breaking when she came out. She made it ok for women to own their sexuality. She was very aggressive and that excited and upset a lot of people. I loved every minute of her rise to fame. It was an exciting time to follow music. I was 12 when she really started getting airplay in 1984. By the time this song came out in 1985, she was the biggest star in the world. She kept up that pace, charting 17 top ten hits from 1984 to 1990, 8 of those were number 1 hits.
I was never a fan. Most of her early stuff, like this, was bubblegum. The one exception was “Like a Prayer.” Her later hits were mostly pop. She was fantastic in “Evita.” I don’t know if I would compare her to Cardi B; Madonna has talent. She did redefine female led pop music and became a brand and force unto herself. I would compare her more to Beyoncé. Lady Ga Ga has been compared to Madonna and I can see that.

The video is play off of Marilyn Monroe's famous Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend number from the movie musical, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes with Jane Russell (Madonna did the Marilyn look for years at one point) which is one of my favorites so when I saw this I loved it. She was VERY comfortable in her sexuality then as now, lol. Big fan of early Madonna. Check out Burning Up, Borderline, Rain, Papa Don't Preach, This Used to Be My Playground from the movie A League of Their Own, Everybody, La Isla Bonita, Lucky Star, Cherish, Take a Bow (one of my favorites), Holiday, Dress You Up (with my love) - live version, Express Yourself, Crazy for You, Live to Tell, Vogue, Into the Groove
Not particular into pop music, but i always liked Madonna, she is somehow special. But the later songs i enjoy more than the early 80's stuff, but it's still nice, she deserves it. Her movie career is also funny, from nude films like Body of Evidence to Evita or Four Rooms, where she received the golden raspberry for her performance. But she has to be liked.
Madonna didn’t really get naughty until the 90’s. But keep listening because she’s reinvented herself so many times, if you didn’t have a label for proof, you wouldn’t likely be able to differentiate her material without extensive knowledge and experience. 😉
Wouldn't have guessed the Cardi B comparison, but I can see it for the shock value. Usually people say Lady Gaga is a more contemporary version of Madonna. Although I guess she's been around for almost as long as Madonna had been around when she came out. So maybe not the best example anymore. Idk, the late 2000's don't feel that long ago to me sometimes so Lady Gaga still feels like a "new" artist to me.
This was Madonna's tribute to Marilyn Monroe singing "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend". Madonna got the look down perfect. My favorite Madonna songs are ballads ("Live to Tell" and "Gone") where she shows off her voice. The woman can sing for real!

You need to react to more Madonna music video like « human nature » from the 90´s
Omg you should be in a movie! Like a scream queen
For me it's the First Album. It's just so good and so ahead of it's time.
Maddona was and is a true artist for decades to come 🎯🔆
Madonna the greatest female artist ever
Madonna didn’t really get naughty until the 90’s.
But keep listening because she’s reinvented herself so many times, if you didn’t have a label for proof, you wouldn’t likely be able to differentiate her material without extensive knowledge and experience. 😉
The video for Material Girl was played constantly on Friday Night Videos when I was a teen
