This was Madonna's tribute to Marilyn Monroe singing "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend". Madonna got the look down perfect. My favorite Madonna songs are ballads ("Live to Tell" and "Gone") where she shows off her voice. The woman can sing for real!

Madonna was the girl crush for most of the pop culture oriented female teenagers at the time. After seeing Lucky Star and Borderline, I tried to emulate her style and look from head to toe (much to my Daddy's dismay). The rosaries as jewelry, the cross earrings, the teased blonde hair, heavy makeup and bracelets up to the elbows on both arms. Lace leggings and lace fingerless gloves. There were many times where he sent me back upstairs to change clothes or "find the rest of my skirt" 😳🤨😆

That's just bubblegum Madonna. She released a few really great songs during the 80's and the 90's though. You should definitely listen/react to "Like A Prayer" (in my opinion one of the best pop songs ever written), "Vogue" and "Frozen" ( two of the greatest music videos ever made) if you don't know those yet.

  • @pennydaytreasures8173

I was in JR high when Madonna made these songs. She was definitely extremely popular. She pushed boundaries of the time, which made her very popular but she kept pushing the boundaries and (in my opinion) she always chased the fame it originally brought her. I think one of her best songs was Papa Don’t Preach. Powerful song for the time when teen pregnancy was a big topic.
Yes, this is how we got WAP. People want the fame she had so they chased pushing the boundaries. But they didn’t have originality so they went for shock. When people before you have already done this the only thing you can do is be extreme shock. Todays artists have to go for extreme but it often lacks the substance of what made the original artists so successful. There is a point where it’s no longer “empowering” it’s just pornography in a pretty package. Madonna fell victim to this too. She just pushed and pushed until a lot of her audience grew tired…. Which takes a bit away from her legacy of where she came from.

    She pushed all the boundaries!
-80’s-like a prayer, borderline, into the groove, like a virgin, lucky star, papa don’t preach
-90’s -vogue, justify my love, secret, bad girl, express yourself
-2000’s-what it feels like for a girl, music, hung up, sorry, don’t tell me.

Later in life Madonna said she would probably never do this song "live" ever again because the "Material Girl" moniker became her nickname for years and for this she was not happy that people weren't separating the real her from her singer/performer moniker. She didn't like that people thought that she was really materialistic.

After her divorce from Sean Penn (Actor). Remember Dennis Rodman (basketball player), they were both very controversial celebrities back then and had dated for awhile (1990s) . Perfect couple, huh? lol Anyhow, they tried to get pregnant, but they partied too much (drugs) and couldn't get pregnant.

the 80s for sure but artists like Nirvana, Mariah Carey, 2pac,etc... defined the 90s way more than she did.

@@johnsonmark65 they only made music...Madonna in the 90's had 3 platinum albums and 7 movies...she transcended music and by then became a cultural icon.

I can't even begin to convey how big a roll she had in my young life! I got a "Boom Box" and 2 tapes (Madonna & Cyndi Lauper) for Christmas when I was 13 (1984). Material girl and Girls just want to have fun!! My grandpa had an old bus in his back yard and the acoustics we're FANTASTIC!! I played the hell out of those tapes and sang as loud as I could, dancing around all by myself!! Such good memories...😁

Madonna was worldwide the nr.1 Female Superstar in the mid 80's and 90's.
that's on Music and on Fashion, when Madonna had something new, the most young girls wanted her clothes.
She was the most selling Artist of those 2 decades.

I saw Madonna on the Material Girl tour in Detroit. The Beastie Boys opened for her. Good times.

It's crazy to think that had Madonna not insisted on having Beastie Boys on that tour then rap muisc would probably never really have become mainstream but remained underground.

Wanna hear Madonna's voice later on? More mature? A bit deeper and richer?
Check out "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina", from Evita.
    And y'know what, Lex?
You NAILED Madonna's chameleon-like nature -- constantly re-inventing her image and style -- always.

Not a big fan of her political views but I do think she was one of the hardest working women in the music industry as well as very talented. She has earned everything she has worked for.

The video is play off of Marilyn Monroe's famous Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend number from the movie musical, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes with Jane Russell (Madonna did the Marilyn look for years at one point) which is one of my favorites so when I saw this I loved it. She was VERY comfortable in her sexuality then as now, lol. Big fan of early Madonna. Check out Burning Up, Borderline, Rain, Papa Don't Preach, This Used to Be My Playground from the movie A League of Their Own, Everybody, La Isla Bonita, Lucky Star, Cherish, Take a Bow (one of my favorites), Holiday, Dress You Up (with my love) - live version, Express Yourself, Crazy for You, Live to Tell, Vogue, Into the Groove

Not particular into pop music, but i always liked Madonna, she is somehow special. But the later songs i enjoy more than the early 80's stuff, but it's still nice, she deserves it. Her movie career is also funny, from nude films like Body of Evidence to Evita or Four Rooms, where she received the golden raspberry for her performance. But she has to be liked.

Madonna didn’t really get naughty until the 90’s.
But keep listening because she’s reinvented herself so many times, if you didn’t have a label for proof, you wouldn’t likely be able to differentiate her material without extensive knowledge and experience. 😉

Wouldn't have guessed the Cardi B comparison, but I can see it for the shock value. Usually people say Lady Gaga is a more contemporary version of Madonna. Although I guess she's been around for almost as long as Madonna had been around when she came out. So maybe not the best example anymore. Idk, the late 2000's don't feel that long ago to me sometimes so Lady Gaga still feels like a "new" artist to me.
